SymptomsThin upward curved nails[1]

Koilonychia, also known as spoon nails, are thin upward curved nails.[1][2] Any nail may be affected, although it is seen more frequently in the big toes.[3]

Loss of the normal nail curvature occurs due to the nails being thin.[4] In babies, this is generally normal but in the elderly it may be a sign of iron deficiency anaemia or lichen planus.[5]

Signs and symptoms

In early stages nails may be brittle and chip or break easily.

Causes

Koilonychia is associated with Plummer–Vinson syndrome and iron deficiency anemia. It has also been associated with lichen planus, syphilis, and rheumatic fever.

Terminology

The term is from the Greek: κοῖλος, koilos, "hollow", ὄνυξ, onyx, "nail".
