This is a report of activities of Wiki Project Med Foundation for 2024. It is not a complete list of everything we have done this year but represents a highlight of our work. The compiling of this report — like much that we do — has been a group effort, and we encourage involvement by further individuals within the wider membership.

Projects and activities

We work to "innovate in different content formats, develop new software functionalities for Wikimedia projects, better integrate various tools in the editing experience, [and] establish partnerships with other free knowledge projects"

MDWiki

mdwiki was added to the interwiki map.[1]

NC Commons

Consensus was achieved on AF WP to move forward with further use of NC Commons.[2]

Bot built to automatically import images from NCCommons to AF WP when an image is called but a user.[3]

Template was developed in collaboration with the WMF legal team to clarify use of NC material within WPs.[4]

Fixed the misordering of images within cases.[5]

In partnership with Kiwix, we launched a new version for iPhone.[6]

Internet-in-a-Box

Working on distribution via the Wikipedia Store.

Translation

VideoWiki

VideoWiki is live again.

OurWorldinData

The still images from OWID, which we were involved with uploading in 2020, received about 241 million pageviews across nearly 100 WMF wikis over a 20 month period.

Launched a gadget that brings OWID into Wikipedia.[8]

Worked on security concerns with the WMF.[9] This included meeting with WMF staff.

The Board recognizes that financial needs may fluctuate throughout the fiscal year. Any changes of up to 10% to individual budget line items may be approved by the WPM:Grant Oversight Committee. Any changes over 10%, however, must be approved by the Board. Grant contact person at the WMF is Chris Schilling.

Three year goals

  • Integrate interactive OWID graphs into at least 10 languages and build work flows to keep this material up to date.
  • Keep the translation dashboard functional and expand the number of translators to >250, articles to >10,000 translated, languages worked in to >70, and pageviews to over 10 million. Reengage with TWB.
  • Expand the number of articles ready to translate from 3,000 to 4,000
  • Build the workflow for integrating content from NC Commons to languages of Wikipedia that wish to use it
  • Move 500,000 public domain images from NC Commons to Commons and get them viewable with the CT scan viewer
  • Create a flexible calculator widget and get it working within a few languages of Wikipedia
  • Continue to distribute IIAB via the Wikipedia store. This may require outsourcing assembly of the devices and customer support
  • Upload all of the Khan and TED videos to NC Commons
  • Publish a paper in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization on the outcomes of our multi year collaboration around essential medicines
  • Work with Basque Wikipedia around video creation.
  • Looks at introducing a text to video feature within VideoWiki
  • Develop relationships around medical illustrations
