This represents a report of activities of Wiki Project Med Foundation for 2016. It is not a complete list of everything we have done this year but represents a highlight of our work. Like much of what we do, compiling this report has been a group effort, and we encourage involvement by further individuals within the wider membership.

Collaborations

Cochrane

We are collaborating with Cochrane to recruit health topic experts and students to create and improve medical content.

February 2016:

  • Cochrane Wikipedian in Residence at Cochrane, Sydney Poore/FloNight, is supporting the creation of University of Dundee made up of professionals and students.
  • Partner on "Enlarge Capacity building and eHealth Opportunities for improved digital health literacy (ECHO)" grant proposal submission to European Commission for SC1-HCO-12-2016 - Digital Health Literacy. If the proposal is funded, it would create open access medical content in English, Polish, French, and Spanish that can be incorporated into Wikipedias.

We have seen a significant uptick in new editors adding Cochrane reviews. At least one is making more than 100 edits a month.

Translation efforts

Concentrating on vaccines in early 2016. Blog post.[1] Worked on women's health topics near the end of the year.

World Health Organization

We are collaborating with the World Health Organization around the production of content pertaining to Essential Medicines. We are also continuing to encourage them to release a greater amount of content under an open license.

ILAE

We continue to collaborate with the. They have moved EpilepsyDiagnosis.org to a CC BY SA license following a couple of years of discussion. They are also willing to form an open access journal in which to publish Wikipedia formated literature reviews.

University of California, San Francisco

Feb 29 and Mar 1st we launched the 5th cycle of the medical elective at the University of California San Francisco College of Medicine. A number of members of WPMEDF gave talks including Lane Rasberry, Jake Orlowitz, and James Heilman.

Our efforts won the "Cooke award for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning."

Ongoing research with medical students using Wikipedia at this university led to the publication of research titled, "Why Medical Schools Should Embrace Wikipedia". A poster presentation on the work was accepted at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) annual meeting in Seattle Nov 11-15.

Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel

The 4th class to graduate the Wiki-Med course, Tel Aviv University, 2016- 2017.
Evenstein Presenting at the IAMSE conference; June 2016, Leiden, the Netherlands.
  • The semester-long (13-14 weeks) elective course at Sackler, called Wiki-Med, which was designed and is led by Shani Evenstein, just finished it's 4th iteration. Thus far, 106 medical students participated in the course, almost 50% of them women. The majority of participants were Hebrew native speakers, but many were Arabic native speakers, and some Russian and French native speakers. On average, each student wrote 2 articles during the semester, contributing collectively over 210 medical-related articles in Hebrew Wikipedia, which by now got millions of page views. Some of the articles were translated from English as part of the WikiProject Medicine Foundation's extensive translation efforts, some were wanted but missing articles in He-Wiki and some personal initiatives by students. In the last iteration, half of the articles focused on Women's health, as part of the Hebrew"Women in Red" initiative (part of the WikiWomen project).
  • An academic research paper on the course model was published in the journal "Education and Information Technologies", by Springer-Nature publishing house, in December 2016[1].

Osmosis

At the end of 2015 we began working with the medical video production organization Osmosis.[3] They have been generating medical videos under an open license. We have been working to facilitate the translation of these videos into other languages and their integration into Wikipedia.

More than 150 high quality videos have been created.[4] And they have been viewed more than a million times in 2016.[5]

WikiCite

WikiCite is working towards bringing together the bibliographic information of all references cited across Wikimedia sites, using Wikidata. The Zika virus has been chosen as a focal topic of the effort, so new functionality within WikiCite is often demoed using information on the virus and related topics (example). Another focus of the integration is the literature database PubMed Central (PMC) — the vast majority of PMC-indexed journal articles cited on any Wikipedia are now indexed in Wikidata.

Consumer Reports

Since 2012 Consumer Reports has sponsored Wikipedia outreach to medical organizations, especially schools, in the United States. Bluerasberry acts as Wikipedian-in-Residence at the organization and collaborates continually with Wiki Project Med, Wikimedia New York City, and other wiki community groups. Further information is at en:WP:Consumer Reports.

Wikimania 2016

  • We organized a day of medical talks during Wikimania 2016.[9]
  • A learning pattern called "Wikipedia & Medicine: Practical Details for Educators" was created by Shani Evenstein after the conference. It aimed to strengthen the relationships between the WPMed Foundation and the Wikipedia in Education program, targeting medical educators and practitioners seeking to collaborate with our movement.
  • A new Facebook open group called "Wikipedia & Medicine" was opened, with the hopes of engaging more Wikimedians from around the world in our work.

Content distribution

Offline Medical Wikipedia apps

Collaboration with Wikimedia Switzerland on the development of an offline medical app. Currently there are versions in 10 languages which have been together downloaded more than 100,000 times. More than 75% of downloaders are from the developing world.

Feedback includes: "Awesome. Just what I needed. I am a doctor in a third world country. We don't get consistent Internet service outside a few big cities. So the offline functionality helps a lot. Update when in the cities and it's present wherever I go. A great help!"[10]

"Now the online search engine is in my hand but offline.. Thanks a lot.. Very useful for everyone..specially for medical related persons.."[11]

Further details here. We supported our collaborators in a grant application.[12]

Wikipedia in a Box

In collaboration with Wikimedia ZA among others:

  • Putting all of Marathi Wikipedia on 250 to 1000 Raspberry PI devices that will travel around the State of Maharashtra in collaboration with Wikimedia CH and Health Phone.
  • Testing offline distribution in Egypt and India in collaboration with Internet in the Box

Research

We generate yearly statistic regarding the usage, editorship, and content around Wikipedian and medicine.[13]

Near the end of 2016, we generated results from a large Randomized Controlled Trial of medical students. Work is ongoing, with hopes to publish a good article about this in 2017.
