WoRMS data download

On the front page of the WoRMS website (http://www.marinespecies.org/index.php), there is link to request for a offline download of their Aphia database. Have we requested for it? It may be a gold mine for uploads here.

Download database: We see the web interface as the main means of access to information in the Aphia database. However, in some cases this web interface might be too limited, especially for those building off-line applications. If you want to get an electronic copy of the Aphia database, please fill in and send us the request form

Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 22:23, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

I have no idea, but it sounds good.
Are you aware of this WRMS template? Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 02:23, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
No. I was not aware of this. Thanks for telling us. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:14, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
Can I go ahead and move these templates, WRMS and WRMS Species to Wikipedia?
I have created these.

WoRMS's Aphia system also has a web service feature that lets other systems talk to it. I was thinking of writing a AWB plugin that takes a list of species names, bumps it against Aphia and generates a CSV file with as much information as it can pull (to get the taxobox filled). The generated data can first be reviewed by the Gastropod team before it is used to create/update articles using CSVLoader. Does it should like a good idea to work on?

Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 13:11, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

I think your choice of words "goldmine" may be bang on. From what I've seen, it looks great. I suggest you post this very good information at the project talk site. This could really help the project. For a computer guy on the other side of Wikipedia, you sure are becoming very helpful to the gastropod project.
I will post there.
I am fighting a strange computer problem, so I placed this second in my queue of things. I just switched ISP and had to buy an internet card. For some reason everything is working well, except for one thing: I cannot see any graphic images at Wikipedia and I can't figure out why. Google and Bing images are not problem. In fact, all sites' images come through but not Wiki's. I just don't get it. Do you have any thoughts on this? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:38, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
I have no idea. :)
One thing that strikes me in the registration form is the line: "Who may be able to make a copy of the database?" That makes me worry that they won't release the dBase if they see it will become public domain. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:41, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
We are not going to post the database on Wikipedia, so the general public will not have access to the database. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 23:12, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Re:WoRMS reference template

> I saw your sample. It looks fantastic. Just so that I'm clear, we can, by adding the template, automatically make a reference to the appropriate WoRMS page for each new Conus article. Is that right?

The template centralizes the formatting and the url link. It needs the WoRMS Aphia ID for the species as input. I was going to write a AWB plugin that takes a list of species names and pulls the Aphia ID for each of them.
Sounds great. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:22, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

> You wrote on my talk page that you made two template pages. Only one seems to exist.

There are two. Template:WRMS and Template:WRMS species (for species and sub-species)
When I go to the latter, although the link is blue, nothing is there. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:22, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
It may be a cache issue. Are you able to access this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:WRMS_species?
No. That's the one that asks if I want to create the page. I'll purge. Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:43, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

> You wrote that you would bring this to the attention of everyone on the Project Gastropod talk page. I don't see it there. Cheers, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:09, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

I was going to bring up the topic of Aphia offline database and web services feature once I have completed my research. Do you want me to write about the two templates on the Gastropod talk page? Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:16, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Complete the research and then post at Gastropod talk is probably best. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:22, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Okay. Thanks. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:31, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

New version

Did you get the new release of the CSVLoader? Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 13:23, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

I archived without seeing that. Often, I get that orange "New message" thing after 24 hours of being away, and I often have many replies all over the place and have to go hunting. I wish they'd fix that. I'm not crazy about the talback box.
I am not crazy about Talkback either.
I just downloaded the new version. Amazing. Just to be sure, are you saying I can now make a field like this?
Julia exquisita;Julia exquisita;Gould, 1862;J;exquisita;Australia;[1];;;
Yes, you can have a field like that.
I'm very impressed. Brackets, weirdo characters, and all? This should be a big deal here at Gastropod. I, personally, can make very good use of it. Are there really no prohibitive characters? Many, many thanks from me.
Yes, everything's allowed. There is one catch, characters like "ä" don't come out right, See reference section on this stub. Good news is, AWB does not choke any more.
If you mean [[Bonner zoologische Beitrge]], I see it. That's minor. I can see that it also stops the square brackets from rendering it as a redlink.
On another note, I read that you are originally from Chennai. The temple there, the one that's dark and spooky inside, if my memory is correct, is one of my favourite places. There's something about it that I can't quite put my finger on.
Not sure which temple you are referring to. There are many. The one that I like is the shore temple, Mahabalipuram.
Will check it out.
And on yet another note, the Great Chinese Firewall is nailing me again. I switched ISP and now every site I use is fast and everything comes through, except Wikipedia. I have no images and everything is super-slow. Why is one ISP blocked and not another? Welcome to my world. Not fun. I can't even see the Wikiglobe at the top left. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 14:00, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
I heard. See Blocking of Wikipedia by the People's Republic of China.

Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 00:25, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

That page is blocked for me. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:44, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Anna, have you tried Psiphon or something similar? Viriditas (talk) 02:46, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
I will check it out. Thanks.
The secure site is another option, [1]. Let me know if that works. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 12:48, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
When I click the link, big brother cuts the line. Very frustrating. But thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:55, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
Hello, Anna Frodesiak. You have new messages at Antarctic-adventurer's talk page.

Suitable for automation?

Hi Anna. Not wishing to add to your already very considerable work load here on WP, but I wanted to ask you, can you use your AWB plug-in to change stub types? Is it easy to do? We would like to eliminate these stub types by changing them over to the simple gastropod stub type:

They should all be changed to the simple

also known as

We are eliminating these high level taxa stub tags because the higher levels of taxonomy change too often to warrant having stub types like these.

Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 02:16, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

It's a sinch. I'll let you know when it's done. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 10:31, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
Well, I did two: Acorn ramshorn and Acroloxus. They didn't render. I guess it it because I swapped in the template:
{{tl|snail-stub}}
...when I should have used:
{{snail-stub}}
I don't know what the tl means. Did you put that in so it wouldn't render on my talk page? I am just being cautious, as there are many that need changing. Please advise and I will get started. Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:21, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
Oh I am so sorry; I should have pointed that out to you, I was not thinking! Yes the "tl" was in there so that it was not a live link, so that your talk page did not appear in the list of stubs of all of those types. I copied that list from a list of stub types and it was like that on that page. My apologies. Thanks so being cautious! Invertzoo (talk) 15:27, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

{{gastropod-stub}} is preferred instead of {{snail-stub}} (because it is terminologically correct). By the way, the change is not necessary and can be done changing those 5 templates to redirects per Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Gastropods#Heterobranchia or Gastropod stub preferred?. While the redirect is acceptable by me, the direct change of already categorized stub type is against the spirit of stub sorting. Do not do this as proposed above. Rather think how to categorize it more efficiently (if you wish to do something with this): for example create {{Clausiliidae-stub}}, {{Conidae-stub}} and add some stubs into this and so on. Thanks. --Snek01 (talk) 16:47, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Any controversial or potentially controversial edits made by Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser are strictly forbidden. --Snek01 (talk) 16:53, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

As for "snail stub" I left a message on Snek's talk page explaining that it gives rise to the exact same gastropod stub message, And as for the question of changing stubs, I am fine with the idea that they can all be changed to directs instead. Is redirects something that your plug-in can do Anna? Invertzoo (talk) 16:46, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
As for snail: you can use it if typing by hand. But it saves no time typing 4 more letters when using automated system like AWB and it is much better using exact template then redirected one. It is a bit strange if you want to add a template snail-stub to SLUG Boettgerilla pallens even if visible only during editing. Other possible (but not so hot) difficulties mention Wikipedia:Redirect#Template redirects.
As for other task: First we should TRY to categorize stubs into smaller categoris. And then merge the rest of them. Different sequence gives the task of categorizing unnecessarily more difficult. --Snek01 (talk) 22:12, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
Maybe I'll let you folks work out which stubs need which cats before continuing. I am not sure you all agree just yet. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:06, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
OK, good idea. Thanks, and sorry for bothering you. Invertzoo (talk) 23:25, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
By the way, I think that Snek and I already agree on what needs to be done, there was just some disagreement about what technique we should use to achieve that. We both agree it's better not to use the higher taxa stubs such as Stylommatophora stub, and we both agree that creating more family-stub-types would be useful. Snek would like to see more of the larger families of gastropods having their own stub types first, and then the pre-existing higher taxa stubs could be turned into individual family stubs. At least I think that's what he was saying. Best, Invertzoo (talk) 18:38, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
Okay. I think Snek knows best about which technique should be used. I'm sure he will ask if he needs help from me. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:47, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Stubs from genus lists

I would say in general, if I have not already said this, that it is better not to generate stubs from lists that have no reference or a references that has not been checked as to whether it is suitable or reliable. Invertzoo (talk) 16:39, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

I totally agree. I am considering doing some tree stubs with CVSLoader for practice, and also because, from what research I've done, the taxonomy is far more certain and agreed-upon. But nevertheless, I will talk to the Project Tree and Project Plant people before doing anything. The last thing I want to do is create extra work for people. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:09, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
I hope you don't get discouraged because yes these things are a bit difficult in the world of snails and slugs. You have done all kinds of valuable work here and we appreciate it! All good wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 23:27, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
I am never discouraged. I've learned so much about gastropods this past year. It is indeed a difficult group of animals to figure out when it comes to taxonomy. It is very easy for me to make mistakes. The three of you have been very patient when it comes to guidance and fixing my errors.

The Great Firewall

The reason I have been less active lately is because of this great firewall problem. Proxies allow browsing, but not editing (due to IP issues), plus proxies live on borrowed time as the powers that be find and block them. It is a real drag. My last ISP didn't block Wikipedia. This new one does, so I still can't figure out who is telling who to block what. All very frustrating. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:47, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
I am sorry, that must be very difficult. Good luck with it. Invertzoo (talk) 14:14, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
Anna, I just saw this message. You say that you can't edit from a proxy, but given your situation, I seem to recall that an exemption can be made for individual accounts. Have you pursued this issue with the appropriate admin? Viriditas (talk) 10:14, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
Ah, maybe a good plan. I will ask around. Thanks for the tip! As it stands now, it takes 27 seconds to load any page at wiki, and I get no photos -- a real drag. With the proxy it is faster, but as you know, no editing. For comparison, I can load, say, Google News, in less than 1 second. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 10:39, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
Anna, have you looked at Wikipedia:Advice to users using Tor to bypass the Great Firewall? Viriditas (talk) 10:40, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Anna, I've been thinking, why don't you just post a small request for help with getting through the Great Firewall on Jimbo's talk page? You'll not only get his attention, but considering how many hundreds of editors/admins are watchlisting his page, I guarantee you'll have the problem solved within a matter of days. Just keep your message brief and to the point. What do you think? Let's solve this! Viriditas (talk) 10:49, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

I am not sure I want the attention.
This may sound strange, but I agree with the firewall. The government wants to prevent information, misinformation, or propaganda that might lead to the formation of groups. China is so big and well connected to the internet, that groups can become very large, very quickly. Think of some notable "incidents" in China in the last few decades where the government stamped out a growing movement. The people here are still fresh out of the old system, and giving them the freedom to organize and dissent is not the same as, say, France or the US.
When you see information blocks or a severe reaction to some group, think of the responsibility the government has. It must protect the lives of 1,325,639,982 people. Stabilty is paramount. Look at China's history during the past 100 years. Every time there was some movement, millions died. The people here deserve total safety and stability. China is opening up slowly, and rightly so. We are talking about huge numbers of people here, which can translate into huge amounts of suffering if stability is lost.
And the government provides freedom in other ways. People's lives are improving. China does not invade other countries, kill millions of people, install puppets, and steal everything. They are big. They could. But, they don't. Also, China, internally, is very, very free. You can open a baseball cap stand on the side of the road and nobody will bug you. You won't get pulled over for having the wrong colour skin. You can walk down the road with a chicken on a string if you like. You can make a bonfire on the beach. It is also safe. A single woman can walk anywhere, anytime, and be completely safe. That is freedom. Now, if I can only get the men to stop spitting green stuff all over the place, but even that is getting better.
I would love to have access back the way it was before. But, going to Jimbo's page has a double purpose: drawing attention to the government's blocks, and finding someone who can handle my personal editing problem. What I need is to solve only the latter.
Just to restate my strange problem, I was with one ISP, a huge company. They did not block Wikipedia (much). A month ago, I swtiched to another huge ISP. The only problem is with Wikipedia. So, if one company blocks Wiki images and the other doesn't, it might not be the government directly. But, who knows? Does the government give a list of what to block to one company and a different list to another? Yep. That's sounds about right. Lots of things don't make sense here. In talking to the new ISP, I get nowhere. I interface with some 21 year old kid on a computer who knows only how to take payment and create an account. When I talk about a single site that will not give me images, he just stares at me with a puzzled look.
If you know where I can ask about logging in, but using a floating IP, that would be very helpful. That should solve the problem for a while, until the proxy gets discovered and blocked.
I am very grateful for your help and concern. I really liked editing and miss it a lot. Pardon the long reply. I just thought I should explain the other side of things. Thank you. Please suggest what you can. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:41, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
Understood. We all miss you. One thing that occurs to me off the top of my head is using a cellular device as a second network connection. Verizon now offers a Palm phone that also acts as a hotspot. But, I don't know the status of telecom providers in China. Viriditas (talk) 23:57, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
I miss you all too. I will check out your suggestion. For now, I am relegated to idiotic edits. I think the last one was adding Karen Black to List of people who are cross-eyed. It was reverted as unsourced. This is an all-time low. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:56, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
I was going to add Black back in for you, but I don't have access to the Los Angeles Times source at the moment. I'll see if I can find it later. Do you have a particular source in mind? Viriditas (talk) 04:28, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Ha ha, thanks. I actually looked for a source yesterday.....and couldn't find one. I added it based upon original research. That's how low I went. Woe is me. Plus, I just watched a film she is in and I know she must see two of everything. I wonder if she needs to buy fewer house plants. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:25, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Naughty.  :) I'll look for a source right now. BTW, after a certain age, the brain adjusts such that it favors one eye over the other. If she does have strabismus, it's likely that ocular dominance comes into play. Viriditas (talk) 05:56, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Ok, all I could find was the Los Angeles Times story,[2] but I don't have access to it and I'm not sure one news story is enough for inclusion. Viriditas (talk) 06:32, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

WoRMS download

I finished writing the program and posted a message on project talk. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:50, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

The program is available for download if you would like to use it. See User:Ganeshk/WoRMS. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:35, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

I used one of your photos

I used one of your photos at http://hearingshofar.blogspot.com/2010/03/horn-used-as-implement.html.

If you have additional images that show how the horn was being used, or could send me a description, I would welcome it as an addition to my blog.

Need some help

Hi, Anna. Hope you're well. Listen, I have three species of gastropods that I want articles or redirects if need be. They are as follows: Euplica varians (Sowerby, 1832); Mitrella margarita (Reeve, 1859); and Leptothyra verruca (Gould, 1845). Their shells are used to make shell leis (necklaces) on the island of Niihau. Please let me know if you or your project can create articles or if I should do it myself. Thanks! Viriditas (talk) 03:06, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi! Sure I will help. I will consult the experts, as there are a lot of synonyms and such. I will check it out during the week. Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:38, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
In progress. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:56, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

 Done

ANI incident

Anna, Please check Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Mass_article_creation_by_Tratra22395768 and let me know what you think. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:43, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Trippy! Conus allaryi and other articles at the top of the Conus list are presumably by you, right? The history just says "Ganeshbot". I don't see gastropod articles by Tratra22395768. What is super-strange is that the editor made China railway station articles and I just made Hainan East Ring Intercity Rail. The editor in question actually edited that article And now, a matter about Conus articles??? Chinese railways and seashells are pretty far apart. What gives? Did this editor follow me around? What do you make of this? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:38, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
Wierd...right. He's like me, working on Indian geography and sea shells. :-) I thought about the same thing you are thinking, Chinese railway and Sea shells, that sounded like your editing pattern. I suggest you keep a watch. Although there is nothing much we can do. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 14:10, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Good news

So some good news, the Conus stubs are finally done. :) I hope you are able to resolve your internet issues soon and get back to active editing. Why not switch back to the old ISP? Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:55, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Very well done! You are a great asset to the project. I hope that I can resolve my ISP problems too. I am considering switching to another ISP. The previous service is a rip-off, and any new choice may have the same blocks. Thank you again, and keep up the good work. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 19:23, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Poul Lange, and Conus

OK, I will ask him. Was it an image of his work you thought would be best? Or an image of him? And if it was his work, which kind of thing do you think would be nice to have?

Oh and yes, the Conus stubs are up and in fine condition. Ganesh did a really fine job, but none of this would have happened if it wasn't for your idea and all the work you put in. So many thanks! About 600 thanks in fact.

And yes that was weird that that troublemaker was somehow copying your kind of work. I thought that was peculiar.

Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 13:00, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

I suggest taking any image you are offered. If any image is forthcoming, my guess is that it would be of the artist.
Conus is a splendid asset to the project. Even though some of the info came from the old cone article, it now looks really great. The bzillion new stubs? Jewels in the crown. And, I didn't really help. I just opened the can of worms then watched the show.
As for the "troublemaker", I think he is a Taiwan person. He knows how to read and write Chinese characters well, and has intermediate English, considering the edit summaries. My guess is that, after he edited the railway article I started, he visited my user page, saw the Conus project, and decided to make articles. It was very cheeky. He took the data from somebody's sandbox, plus, it was obviously a work in progress by several people. Although, there is the possibility that he just saw Conus on my talk page and went right to the article and saw red links. Regards, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 20:46, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Well I see Tratra has been indefinitely blocked, not surprisingly. And yes, I will ask Poul Lange if he has an image he is prepared to give away. And thanks again, we would not have developed this very beneficial relationship with Ganesh and GaneshBot if you had not started going in that direction. I am sure there will also be various kinds of upgrading of pre-existing stubs that can be done with the bot, not just the creation of new stubs. As you know, I am very keen on upgrading the overall quality of the project's articles as well as expanding the scope. Although I must say that Daniel and I going through all 6000 stubs by hand doing all different kinds of clean-up is by no means a pleasant task, and one that when completed will have taken about 9 months. However, doing all this "on foot" I do find and correct a lot of unusual things that a bot would not be equipped to check. All good wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 13:28, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
Good that he's blocked. I made a doppleganger account out of paranoia.
Ganeshk is just what the project needed. I still think he should post at other project pages that cover lots of species, show the Conus example, and teach others to do what he does. For cleanup, maybe give him a list of all the things you do manually and see which can be automated. He may surprise you. I see you manually moving the stub tags down. Maybe that can be done with a bot.
I see you have a holiday coming up. I'm sure you will you have a fun time. Good that it's not centipede season (cane harvest time when they all come running out). They are the only things that give me the heebee-jeebees, except for ankle-grabbing-under-the-bed-monsters. I hope you find an avocado tree in the forest and have a picnic. Regards, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 20:42, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the pie!
