user Kungkang

I see you've mentioned him - Kungkang (talk · contribs) is a problem. He's doing copy and paste and creating articles without understanding our need for reliable and verifiable sources, and I am planning to take at least one of his articles to AfD, Wu Sien as I can find no sources. I suspect it is a matter of the English spelling but I searched using various relevant keywords and spellings. --Dougweller 06:09, 27 November 2009

I'm not exactly sure why User:SoWhy declined the speedy delete. The comment was "Decline speedy - Article claims importance/significance of the subject (CSDH))" as you can see here in history for the article. I also cannot find any evidence that Wu Sien existed. Modern Mandarin doesn't use "sien" and there are many characters for "wu". I will ask one of my assistants tomorrow what they think the Chinese characters might be. They can then search Chinese sites for evidence. --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:08, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. I don't think Kungkang is around, he hasn't edited for over a week. I did search on some of the words in the article but couldn't find any names that came even close. I'm afraid all the articles he created - [1] need sources and checks for normal English spelling. He does give the Chinese characters in some of his other articles. I hope I was right in moving Kingdom of Dazhou to Kingdom of Da Zhou, but I did see 'Da Zhou' in several sources (coin studies and Needham). Dougweller (talk) 08:35, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
Hmmmm, sketchy stuff. As for Da Zhou, I'm not too clear on Wiki naming conventions when it comes to spaces between words. Here in China, using pinyin, names that are made of two words are stuck together: Haikou, Shanghai etc. With the word "city" or "lake" following, there is usually a space: Baiyangdian Hu (Baiyangdian Lake). But things aren't always consistent: Wuzhi Shan (literally "FiveFinger Mountain"). But then there is Wuzhishan City (literally "FiveFingerMountain City"). Go figure. If you really want to start thinking about this, I suggest taking seven or eight aspirin and waiting half an hour first. --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:20, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
I looked at Google books for Da Zhou and Dazhou and went with what I found. Basically we use the most common name normally. Dougweller (talk) 11:48, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
Take a look at my talk page, it's been suggested he is a character in a fictional retelling of Zheng He's voyages but the links there are in Chinese so I can't read them, being a typical monolingual English speaker. Dougweller (talk) 12:38, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on International Center for Research on Autism requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. —ShadowRanger (talk|stalk) 21:23, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

The article International Center for Research on Autism has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Notability in question. Switching to PROD from speedy for the time being.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. —ShadowRanger (talk|stalk) 21:34, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Judy Palfy site

Dear Anna, I type here the links that prove my site's truth. I know that some of them are in Hungarian (language) and sometimes the sites have a typo (about her name's spelling) I think these would help me to build this site. Thank you so much for your help and support. We have a group - in Hungary - who are very proud to her because she had a very "hard life" here because of political reasons. We don't want to disturb the Wikipedia's rules only wanted to let the world know that we are still following her carrier and life. Thank you again for all! Dorisz Jankovics (I'm the editor of her books and her website's creator, administrator. I'm also a Hungarian born woman but I'm still living mostly in Hungary) My father is a well-known (across the world) director - Marcell Jankovics. You may check it.

Thank you Anna. If you have any time, please let me know what will be your decision. Dorisz —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jankovicsdorisz (talkcontribs) 11:00, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

yikebike images

Hi Anna, yes I am involved in managing the YikeBike website so I have access to many images. The reason I signed up to Wikipedia was to improve the image on the entry, but I discovered that I couldn't upload an image immediately, I need to become autoconfirmed first. I guess I need to wait 4 days and make a few more edits around the place to get to 10 before I can do that!

I will make some more edits in any case and upload an improved image later in the week.

What perked your interest in the YikeBike?

RE: Parentheses

Hi Anna, I see that you are also correcting my mistaken parentheses edits with Seascapeza. Just so you know, here is what I wrote to him regarding the issue. Thanks!

Hi Seascapeza, my apologies. I wasn't aware of the significance of parentheses in authorship. I am a scientist (physics), but not a biologist by training so didn't realise. I will attempt to reverse where I have incorrectly added parentheses, (quite some number). I would ask though, that if you do reverse changes that I made to be careful not to blanket reverse other useful changes as well, and to just change the incorrect parentheses. I have just now completed adding all genera for the super-family Doridoidea, so we now have a record of every species (accepting some synonyms) for that superfamily. I will be doing this for all nudibranchs in due course. If you were to just blanket reverse everything I did that included parentheses we would lose most of that work. Best wishes Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 19:36, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi Antarctic-adventurer. First, I would like to tell you what a good job you are doing. You are very productive. Second: What parentheses edits? I am a bit of a wiki-dilettante and am not even sure what should be in parentheses. Can you give me an example? Third: is there a bot that can handle it? Regards, --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 22:53, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Anna, thanks for your reply and praise. The problem is now solved! I manually went through all the edits where there shouldn't be parentheses and removed them. Basically I was putting all the authors names in parentheses. Seascapeza sent me a message originally about it. I am copying it below so you are in the loop:
Hi Antarctic Adventurer
I've been seeing a few of your edits recently and most of them seem to involve adding parentheses to the scientific describer's name and date of description. I am not sure if you are aware of this, but the addition of parentheses in this format has a very specific meaning. If the species name, say Doriopsis pecten is followed by a surname and date in brackets -- in this instance, (Collingwood, 1881) this means that the species was originally described by Collingwood in 1881, but for some reason has subsequently had its genus changed from that given in the original description to, in this case, Doriopsis. If there is no bracket -- say Atagema rugosa Pruvot-Fol, 1951, this means that Pruvot-Fol described the species in 1951 as being in the genus Atagema and that that genus classification still stands. I hope this explains why I have been assiduously removing your parentheses, and also hope it does not give offence. regards
All fixed now though and no harm done. I will get to adding the rest of the nudibranchs as and when I can. At the very least it would be great to have at least a genus page for every nudibranch out there, even if not all nudi's have their own individual page. So far one Superfamily complete. By the way, what is your area of specialisation? Happy Holidays. Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 23:27, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
I am a professional dilettante. Ha ha. But seriously, Go, chess, piano, film-making, sculpture, painting, are my loves, and I'm about to get back into paragliding (which may get me killed as the weather is a bit sketchy here on Hainan). Academically? Am I spelling academically right?
Genus stubs for nudibranchs? How many remain? Maybe you can make a subpage to keep track of the status. Let me know how I can help. Does Japan do Christmas? Best, --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:54, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Paragliding huh? Pretty cool. I used to be a skydiver a few years ago before I got into scuba diving. Seroiously fun stuff. Haven't had the time to try paragliding yet though. And you live on Hainan Island. That is really cool. I am not sure how many genus stubs remain, but I should get through them all before too long. Good idea about the subpage. I will see what we can do. And Christmas in Japan... well yes they do it but not in a western way. Many families order fried chicken. Santa is up in all the stores though. New Year is the bigger thing here as I am sure in China too... ;) Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 00:38, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Skydiving! Wow. I never tried anything above a few thousand feet. I have about 15 static line jumps. Pretty old stuff. I kept moving and had to do the course over again. Last time, the group just before ours had a plane crash on takeoff. Narrow escapes, but that kind of scared me off. Then paragliding. I gave it up when I moved to Holland. Flat country. I abandoned a rather expensive kit: wing, reserve, harness, etc. But, it's just too fun to quit -- except it gives me falling nightmares. But, long flights and no reliance on planes is the advantage.

Fried chicken for Christmas? That sounds very Japanese-minuature-turkey-style. New Year is nothing big here. Students go to school the next day.

I guess you dive to find nudibranchs. Just remember: Don't squeeze them. Fight the temptation! I just see a picture of one and I see "Crest" written on it it big, red letters. Let me know if you make a subpage or if you need help. --Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:37, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Dive for nudibranchs indeed I do. No touching by this diver, fear not. Just photos. When I started diving I couldn't understand why people were interesting in "slugs". Then shortly after I became a nudi fanatic. lol. Thanks and Merry Christmas in Hainan. Freezing here in Japan right now. Wish I was at your latitude! --Antarctic-adventurer (talk) 11:03, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Long time no slime, Anna!

Nice to hear from you again! How the heck are you? Thanks for the kitchen-window keeping-open device, although a pair of wool-cashmere blend socks would also have been quite welcome (!) since here in the Northeastern USA we just emerged from this blizzard. I don't have a kitchen window here in our tiny NYC studio-with-alcove apartment, so I gave the egg-like thing to my cat, who is happily rolling it around and chewing on it. She likes the sparkle! I am currently a bit sick, recovering from a sudden and painful sinus thing that started last Tuesday.

As for the centering or not of the "See text" line, it really is not a big deal either way. The only reason I changed a couple of them is because the majority of them are on the left, that's all and I am going through our 5,000 gastropod stubs fixing them up fast without too much reflection. Sure a bot could make that particular change very easily, but so far we have not had any success asking to have bots do tasks, probably simply because when Snek put in the requests he did not ask enough Project Gastropod people to chime in and say: "yes this is a good idea".

Sure, any stubs that you fancy making from images on the project page, that would be great. I imagine there are also many new images on Commons of gastropods that don't have an article yet if you run out of images at some point. Watch out for those cowries: it is a cult that will try to recruit you if you are not careful!

Slimy hugs, Invertzoo (talk) 20:31, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Woody Johnson Page

Hello! Actually, there is a doubt as to the year of Casey Johnson's death; she was found on the 4th of January, and not been heard from for 7 days. Her year of death could be 2009 or 2010.

Hello, no that is not my bot, it belongs to User:SQL but I have seen this issue in the past and am not sure why it does that.  fetchcomms 00:37, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Are you versed in putting photo galleries at the base of articles? SatuSuro 15:22, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Good suggestion. I just did it. Did you mean Deli Serdang Regency? How do I make them bigger? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:30, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes - galleries stay that size - i think captions are far more important than worrying about size - we have had a spate of oversized torpenmuseum pictures added to many indonesian project articles - that have been subsequently systematically reduced in size but still have very unhelpful dutch language captions - a caption is far more important SatuSuro 15:36, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
I'm a culprit. I've added several at 250px, but the last few at 150px. As for captions, the file info gives a date range so I've been adding "circa" and picking a middle date. Also, I don't know the names of the subjects. They are not in the file info. I was hoping somebody would know more info and fix them. Cheers. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:42, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Very unlikely - but they look good :) many tropenmuseum photos are inadequately described to make them practically unusable (some of the railway shots are brilliant in that way - they could be almost anywhere in Java) - but hey - it sure makes a lot of indonesian project stubs look better :) SatuSuro 15:46, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Great pictures. I'm really enjoying going through them. I started at 10,000 and am just finishing for the day at 12,000. Is there page for people to organize going through them? (I don't mean to categorize them, but to pick out images needed for articles.) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:54, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
I have a very specific personal knowledge of the area of Yogya and Solo (and Merapi) area I mean to go into the archive sometime myself and trawl - but as for co-ordination - i dont think there has been any specific method suggested - unfortunately - it would have been good if there had been - but I think its all anyone goes for anything - ciao SatuSuro 15:59, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Is there a project page anywhere? Perhaps I can post what I have covered, then others can do the same, and we can more efficiently scour the collection.Anna Frodesiak (talk) 16:06, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
