Backwardscopy

I see you've run into a potential {{Backwardscopy}} over at The Collector (2009 film).[2] There are several ways to check. One way that sometimes works for me, is to check the revision dates with the help of either Google cache and/or the Wayback Machine over at the Internet Archive.[3] As far as IMDb goes, it looks like you have to be logged in to view the revision history. In this particular case, the Wikipedia revision history is all we need. You can either search through the revisions using various tools, or just look at it visually. Using the latter, the revision date of 21:49, 21 November 2009 jumps right out. Looking at the diff,[4] we see that yes, indeed, it was a copyvio, copied not from IMDb to Wikipedia, but from themoviespoiler.com.[5] Looking closer at the edit history, we see that this article was desperately in need of semi-protection, because some jokers continue to add the plot back into the article over and over again. I would definitely consider requesting SP if you see a pattern behind this kind of thing. Viriditas (talk) 09:19, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Okay. My thinking cap's on. First, my main supergood proxy is gone. I'm down to one, which doesn't allow archive.org/wayback. Second, what do I remove to turn secure into normal? Sorry for the hassle. Life behind the wall. Speaking of which, here's a conversation I had today with the Internet repairman:
  • ME: "Why can't I see images at Wikipedia."
  • RM: "It must be your settings." (Goes to desktop and clicks "refresh" nine times in a row.)
  • ME: "No. It's not my settings. I can see images on all other websites."
  • RM: "Then it must be the GFC."
  • ME: "It can't be. There are two giant Internet companies for the whole country. One allows Wikipedia images, and the other doesn't."
  • RM: "Then it must be your settings." (Fiddles with connection settings while I sit poised to snatch the mouse away.)
  • ME: It can't be. Look. All other sites show images.
  • RM: "Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm." (Starts to browse randomly.)
  • ME: "Well?"
  • RM: "It must be your settings."
  • ME: "No. It must be your company. I know you can't fix it here. Can you please talk to your manager?"
  • RM: (Goes to desktop and opens C: then drifts off into space for a while.)
  • ME: "Hello."
  • RM: "Yes?"
  • ME: "Will you talk to your manager?"
  • RM: "About what?"
  • ME: "Never mind."

Anna, I'm sorry to hear you are still having problems. Have you checked your settings? ;-) Seriously though, wading through multiple tiers of tech support can be really frustrating. I've pretty much lost my once reliable wireless connection because a supergenius decided to adjust the towers, so I understand where you are coming from. BTW, I read how many people are working on maintaining the GFC and it left me flabbergasted. Who will guard the guards? Viriditas (talk) 03:49, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
Yes, the GFC is huge. There's no shortage of manpower here. But, like I've said before, it's been a good thing, especially considering Tunisia/Egypt/Tunisia. The people here are still too fresh out of the old system to handle dissent. The main objective remains: prevent huge groups from forming, prevent chaos, protect the masses.
As for the computer problems, I think I've figured it out. It's probably the settings. Either that or else it's the settings, or something setting-related.
As for your wireless problems, it's probably the towers. Either that or an adjustment problem related to the towers. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:34, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
We've just had our first major wave of PRC tourists this year. Very nice people, I must say, and I had a lovely time talking with them. Their English is very good, and aside from their accent, their vocabulary is better than most Americans. All of them said the same thing: "The air is so clean, here!" I called tech support about the towers, and there's nothing they can do because I'm located between two of them so the router gets confused, switching from one to the other and dropping the connection. They have told me the only thing possible is to purchase a new omnidirectional router for $40, so maybe this is part of their marketing plan. Planned obsolescence? Chinese people are wonderful. They are very modest, and I especially like the fact that they are totally non-violent. You never see people physically fighting, and it's always safe in an elevator or a dark alley.
I often compliment them on their English. They are awesome students. They really work hard.
Your connection trouble: I would suggest either a ball of tinfoil on your router, or maybe sticking bananas into the tower, (although that might just be a tailpipe thing). Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:52, 10 March 2011 (UTC)
The Chinese have been in Hawaii for a very long time; their culture is very much a part of the fabric of the state. I got myself into a conversation about the history of Chinese exploration with one PRC tourist, and his face brightened up, and he launched into a discourse on the 2000 treasure ships sent out in the 15th century. Your userpage

If I may make a suggestion.. I think it would be really cool if you formatted your Cafe Anna image as a clickable image map and have the individual picture frames each link to a different Wikipedia page. For example, I see you got the Just for Laughs mascot in there, that could link to it's article, and Jimbo's face could link to his userpage. So in the case of the picture frames it's much easier, you would use "rect" and only 4 numbers (for each picture frame), as there's 4 sides to a rectangle. -- Ϫ 07:49, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
I did it! Trouble is, I can only see Wikipedia images through a proxy, so my normal experience of Wikipedia is text only. I tested the rectangle via the proxy and it seems like I have the right side and top side alright, but the rectangle is too wide to the left, and drops down too low at the bottom. Is this just a proxy illusion, or is it okay? (I am using MS Paint to get the coords.
Also, what about the overall cafe image size? Do most people have wide screens? What permanent size would you suggest? Thanks!! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:25, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

http://toolserver.org/~dapete/ImageMapEdit/ImageMapEdit.html seems to work. I uploaded the image to stashbox as commons is blocked for me.

Not sure how it will all turn out, but I'm on the right track.

What websites can be external links?

Hi Anna,

I'm confused about what websites can be eligible to be an external link. Ive noticed many edits and re-edits of people posting retail websites under external links and then some are marked spam and removed and others are left. Is this allowable if it links to say an informational page of the site? Or does it have to be a completely informative website to be a link?

Marking articles students are working on

Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

  1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
  2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
  3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

Potential safety hazard

Dear Ms. Frodesiak: It has come to my attention that you may be in violation of the following:

POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD TO INANIMATE OBJECTS IN DRAWINGS-VIOLATION OF SECTION 02-22357-6

I would like to draw your attention to File:Drawing_of_Cafe_Anna_01.jpg. As you can see for yourself, the new steps to the basement you have constructed lack the required permit and the necessary safety handrail and wheelchair-accessible ramp and/or elevator.

Ms. Frodesiak, I have a long list of letters from disgruntled inanimate objects, animals, and concerned stick figures who are unable to use your facilities in a safe manner. One animal, a friendly sea slug, has written to complain about an injury it incurred at your Cafe, having slipped into your "Amber Room" while sliming across the floor. Ok, I will stop but my criteria is based on the fact that French is the sole official language in Quebec, thus also in Montreal.

Montreal , like the rest of the province of Quebec is officially unilingual, concerning street and square signs as well. The streets and squares preceding the names are only in French. I added the English translationts of each street as well.

I also used the oficially unilingual French speaking cantons of Switzerland and the oficially unilingual region of Flanders in Belgium as examples, which only use preceding street names in their languages.

Hi Anna, it has been a while since we communicated. I just wanted to say how very cool your new "Cafe Anna" wall is on your userpage. Seriously! The links to different parts of wikipedia is such a good idea and quite unique. Interesting userpages are always a pleasure to see and yours is one of the better ones out there. I also see that you have been busy on wikipedia. You and I actually started editing around the same time, and for a short while we had a similar number of edits, but you now have over 10 times more than I! Keep up the great work. Schwartz's

Glad to help. Unfortunately, I must confess Yankee ignorance as to the difference (if any) between corned beef and Montreal-style smoked meat. Is there one? Either way, I have a sneaking suspicion that some of my relatives were done in by this kind of diet, in a bad way. It can't be all that healthy. I admit that I miss it dearly, but I haven't had anything like it since, oh, about 1987 or so. I was just reading the Schwartz's article, and whomever wrote that the classic meal includes "a medium-fat sandwich, fries, half-sour pickle, coleslaw, red pepper, and a black cherry soda" wasn't kidding! I think I had that once a month for Sunday brunch as a kid with my family. I wonder if the Matzah ball soup at Schwartz's is any good. Have you eaten there? I don't really know much about corned beef. And yes, the sandwich is really unhealthy. You can actually feel your blood slowing down. I never had the matzah ball soup there. Brown Derby is best for that. If you're ever in Montreal, do try a smoked meat. The place is easy to find because there's always an ambulance parked out front. Yes. It's really good, considering it's just a fried baloney sandwich. I really miss Montreal food. Great souvlaki, great pizza, great poutine, great Jewish food, great steamés etc. One of the best things is Mike's Subs. I detest cold weather. For a Canadian, living in palm tree land is sweeeeeet. No more shoveling out the car. No more freezing feet, slush, flurries, freezing rain, etc. It was sometimes so cold you had to walk backwards. Do you like winter? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:16, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
I do like winter, and the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco. Twain never actually said that, but I love repeating it. These days, the closest I get to winter is Vivaldi. So, you never actually did the deep snow, full-on winter thing? It can be quite nice.
Love Monet. Love the Magpie. (I meant to proxy it but forgot before.) That's one of my favs. (I center my icons around the edges of a black screen for an unobscured view of a nicely centered wallpaper. (Drives and folders on the left, a/v and net on the bottom, utils on the top, fun stuff on the right.) I'm not sure why people put them in columns on the left. Habit I guess, but bad feng shui.
When at the printshop, or computer place, I often suggest that they keep shortcuts to drives on the desktop to save the step of opening My Computer each time. They smile and thank me. Then they go back to the old way. Strange.
Speaking of computers, I ought to suggest voidtools' "Everything". A killer search app. Tiny. Amazing because it finds strings, and because it makes a list of everything, then removes what doesn't match. A simple bit of genius that Microsoft missed.

The Floor Scrapers
I have done the winter thing in California, Oregon, Utah, New Mexico, and New York, and I do love it. You may not believe it, but winter does exist outside of Canada! :) I was lucky enough to visit California for the "Birth of Impressionism"[7] exhibit at the de Young back in 2010.[8] I took the audio tour and saw The Magpie up close,(it only showed in Madrid and San Francisco[9]) and I was quite impressed. In the middle of this museum with hundreds of people, I was transported back to a winter landscape in the 19th century. You could feel the cold wind blowing out of the frame and on to your face. Wild stuff. Gustave Caillebotte was also on display, and The Floor Scrapers really stood out. If you haven't seen that one in RL, you should. The lighting is just amazing. I seem to recall seeing Caillebotte's Vue de toits as well in 2010, but I might be confusing it with the time I saw it in 1999 at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. I have to tell you, these Wikipedia images are all wrong, both in terms of color and quality. They are so different than the real thing it is almost embarrassing to view them on screen. That sounds sooooooooo nice. de Young had some nice stuff. I really miss the Amsterdam galleries and museums. The Milk Maid is there, and is so transfixing, especially when the place is quiet. The milk becomes the centre of the universe. The locals never, ever visit. Only tourists. I had a student pass for 60 Euros a year, good for everywhere. Best bargain in Europe. A lot of these places are empty off-season, so I had these masterpieces all to myself. And when nobody's looking, I touch them. I can't help it. It's a sickness.
I still love the Impressionists most of all. Call it cliche. I don't care. It's great stuff. Rembrandt was a weenie. Too much black. I'm also a huge fan of Lautrec. That little pervert could draw!

There's a research and reference checking tool that might interest you called Credo Reference. They have donated 400 accounts to qualifying Wikipedia editors, and you can sign up over at Wikipedia:Credo accounts before they are gone. Sounds good, just making sure you're aware of this :). As I said at Ganeshbot's BRfA, I strongly recommend that you concentrate on maintained articles more than adding to the articles which need to be maintained. Hi Anna, I would have suggested you to use CSVLoader plugin for the task. You will need to create two columns in a CSV file in the format, <source article>,<target article>. The template for the article will be, #REDIRECT [[##TARGETARTICLE##]]. Anyway good to hear it's done. I think the cafe needs new paint.
