Life Sciences Foundation

Hello,

Thank you for your quick review of the Life Sciences Foundation article.

Since submitting the original article, I have added three more references to the draft which I planned to resubmit. As a newbie, I just want to make sure that I am clear on the reason the article was rejected. It appears the issue is lack of references but please do let me know if there are other issues with the article.

Timeline of iPad models

Hi,

Could you please explain why you prefer this version of the Template:Timeline_of_iPad_models template to the version that reverted to. I made the undo for two reasons, the first being that for some reason I can't wrap my head around, in the legend both are shown as "iPad 2" whereas if the original iPad is labelled as such it shows as "Original iPad" and the iPad 2 shows as "iPad 2". The second is that the colours are so close that it makes it very hard to read the timeline.

The key aim was to unify colours between the various iPod/iOS/etc timelines. I don't mind either way between "Original iPad" or "iPad". Sceptre ^(talk) 16:55, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

I agree that their should be unified colours, but could you change them to be a little more contrasted so that you can more clearly see the difference. I agree that "Original iPad" or "iPad" would both be acceptable, but for some reason if you set the legend to "iPad" it just shows up as "iPad 2", well at least for me it does, so for that reason alone I think it should be changed to "Original iPad". Would you be able to make these changes to colours that you feel are best, but still have more contrast than the current colours?

Much clearer, I'd still like a little more contrast, so I changed it a little, but if your not happy with it feel free to change it. I'm also wondering if we need the "Still produced" part of the timeline, I would have thought it self evident that the iPad 2 is still being produced, what are your thoughts? Hi. It was the general tone of the article that led me to decline it; there are a lot of corporations that want their own articles and they tend to use a lot of buzzwords and positive language. The baseline standard to warrant a Wikipedia article is notability: a subject that is the subject of significant coverage in secondary sources is presumed to be notable, and a notable subject may have a Wikipedia article. With your request, the only references were to Brown University's website, which is a primary source. Sceptre ^(talk) 19:18, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Since you've been watching this one, I wanted to warn you that our suspiciously WP:SPA article creator has also attempted to get this thing through as Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Jovan Hutton Pulitzer, which I declined as a duplicate. There are major COI and BLP issues here. Pulitzer changed his name after the CueCat debacle (he was originally J. Walter Smith (cartographer)

Hello Will

I hope it's ok to use your regular "talk" page, rather than the IP page which we have conversed in up till now.

I have spoken to Walter about the article and he's pointed out to me that he isn't a "cartographer" - the title "cartographer" is something that crept in, btw, and wasn't in the original title of the piece. Walter is, in fact, a surveyor by training and experience. There's a subtle but important difference here: I guess a surveyor is he who does the measuring, i.e prepares the groundwork, and the cartographer actually draws and prints the thing. As I say, it's subtle. Anyway, the old boy (he's 90) has asked me if we can change the title of the piece. How can I go about this?

On another, completely unrelated matter, I note, from your user page, that you're an "audiophile" and particularly enjoy certain bands who are the very ones I grew up with (I'm 52). I'm also a professional composer, so that may interest you. If you'd like to chat more about music etc., that would be great. I think that user comment on a subject, unless patently libellious, would probably be BLP safe; the BLP policy is born out of legal and ethical issues, and personal opinions tend to be protected to a greater extent. • Response I am obviously very disappointed by this decision. The assertion that I did not read the article is highly misleading, not to mention offensive. I have been a Wikipedia editor for many, many years, and have followed the rules and regulations throughout these years. To suggest that I did not follow the regulations is complete bunkum. Using the evidence present in the article, I made a choice based on what I thought was a fairly obvious case - it STILL breaks our rules on blogs, recentism, notability, and bias. The "keep" votes are from people who have an immense level of conflict of interest, and therefore skew the vote something rotten. I am very disappointed that this entire episode has been carried out at my expense, rather than at the article itself. Here's the mid-drive newsletter. Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. help triage some feedback

Hey guys.

I appreciate this isn't quite what you signed up for, but I figured as people who are already pretty good at evaluating whether material is useful or not useful through Special:NewPages, you might be interested :). Over the last few months we've been developing the new Article Feedback Tool, which features a free text box. it is imperative that we work out in advance what proportion of feedback is useful or not so we can adjust the design accordingly and not overwhelm you with nonsense.

This is being done through the Feedback Evaluation System (FES), a tool that lets editors run through a stream of comments, selecting their value and viability, so we know what type of design should be promoted or avoided. We're about to start a new round of evaluations, beginning with an office hours session tomorrow at 18:00 UTC. If you'd like to help preemptively kill poor feedback, come along to #wikimedia-office and we'll show you how to use the tool. If you can't make it, send me an email at okeyeswikimedia.org or drop a note on my talkpage, and I'm happy to give you a quick walkthrough in a one-on-one session :).

A big NPT update

Hey! Big update on what the developers have been working on, and what is coming up:

coding

• Fixes for the "moved pages do not show up in Special:NewPages" and "pages created from redirects do not show up in Special:NewPages" bugs have been completed and signed off on. Unfortunately we won't be able to integrate them into the existing version, but they will be worked into the Page Triage interface.
• Coding has been completed on three elements; the API for displaying metadata about the article in the "list view", the ability to keep the "patrol" button visible if you edit an article before patrolling it, and the automatic removal of deleted pages from the queue. All three are awaiting testing but otherwise complete.

All other elements are either undergoing research, or about to have development started. I appreciate this sounds like we've not got through much work, and truthfully we're a bit disappointed with it as well; we thought we'd be going at a faster pace :(. Unfortunately there seems to be some 24-72 hour bug sweeping the San Francisco office at the moment, and at one time or another we've had several devs out of it. It's kind of messed with workflow.

Stuff to look at

We've got a pair of new mockups to comment on that deal with the filtering mechanism; this is a slightly updated mockup of the list view, and this is what the filtering tab is going to look like. All thoughts, comments and suggestions welcome on the NPT talkpage :). I'd also like to thank the people who came to our last two office hours sessions; the logs will be shortly available here.

I've also just heard that the first functional prototype for enwiki will be deployed mid-April! Really, really stoked to see this happening :). We're finding out if we can stick something up a bit sooner on prototype.wiki or something.

I appreciate there may be questions or suggestions where I've said "I'll find out and get back to you" and then, uh. not ;p. I sincerely apologise for that: things have been a bit hectic at this end over the last few weeks. But if you've got anything I've missed, drop me a line and I'll deal with it! Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

User script list deprecation

Wikipedia's list of user scripts is in bad shape, in that it is disorganized and contains many non-working, unmaintained, or thoroughly obsolete entries. Cleanup has been on the to-do list since 2007, but little progress has been made. Instead, the whole list is now set to be deprecated on 1 May 2012, to be replaced with a new list. This draft list has been up for about a month, and in that time I've been soliciting script users and authors to come add scripts they know to be working and relevant.

If you know of scripts that you would like to survive this deprecation (and are confirmed working and relevant), you're welcome to add them to the new list. Manning

Given the controversial nature of such a move/change it really is critical it gets discussed before hand. Moving things to the female name, and using the female pronoun, has serious BLP considerations and should be dealt with using sensitivity and caution, not by the brute application of policy. --Errant ^(chat!) 22:37, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

New Pages update

Hey Sceptre/Archive 61 :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! 1) Probably because that's how she was arrested, and how she'll go through the trial. The issue of names is distinct from the issue of gender identity: many trans people use their birth names for some time until they choose a more suitable name when undergoing transition. 2) I guess diminished responsibility due to the effect of gender dysphoria. I say thank you very much. There is a difference between what a confused person says once while investigating themselves in therapy with professionals and what a person says repeatedly as a public declaration to the press and in public. I firmly believe the difference is not lost on you.

Elevating one of the many things someone mentions in therapy to the status of a public declaration which overrides all other public declarations is a good way to attack the individual in question using wikipedia as your own personal loudhailer. The chance that the person in question doesn't read the article is about the same as the chance he doesn't use the internet or know someone who does. So your aim is not so much just to disrupt here, upset the community here and outside, but what is it ? (Redacted)

Really. People on Wikipedia usually don't need to be entertained by me if they have concerns about a certain page (sofixit, be bold). It may be surprising to some, but Wikipedia would still be here if I wasn't. There is also no need for a long discussion, because the bottomline is pretty simple. We need a couple of reliable sources. You have a strong opinion about this kind of stuff, but please don't compare me to a Republican, I don't think you would make that comparison if you knew what I look like. Maybe I should upload a picture. Back to the topic at hand: if you do know what you are talking about then you understand not just gender related issues but Wikipedia as well. On Wikipedia we have this principle of verifiability, not truth. Wikipedia is behind the ball - that is we don't lead, we follow - let reliable sources make the novel connections and statements and find NPOV ways of presenting them if needed. I apologise for the Republican analogy, but there are a lot of people who appear to not have the knowledge needed to contribute to such a sensitive topic seriously. I've been strongly of the opinion that there are already enough sources in the article already to, at the very least, seriously discuss Manning's gender identity (for example, the counsellor Manning contacted saying "Bradley felt he was female, he was very solid on that"(source #23). And I seriously think that some editors would require Manning to undergo SRS and publish the video to the world before entertaining the notion of changing the pronouns. Personally I don't really care much about the genders and sexual preferences of most people I am unlikely to have sex with. If we as a species stopped caring so much about genders life would be much easier for some people afaik. I admit I am not an expert but I think I may have seen a gay guy once (I live in Amsterdam, he was dancing on a boat on the canal in front of my house). Would you please be so kind to point out the flaw(s) in the following sentence: "If Manning decides to be female from now on it will be reported in reliable sources and if that decision is reported by reliable sources someone else will come along and include that fact on Manning's article."? We may have reason to believe Manning is unsure about Mannings gender, but until we have multiple reliable sources that report that Manning has made a choice we will have to be patient. But now for something completely different, and more important. I believe you are underestimating your "opponents". I am not a homophobic Republican who is completely unaware of the sensitivity of gender related issues, and I don't think the other people who disagree with you are (I've quickly skimmed a couple of userpages). This Wikipedia-thingy is an epic battle between good and evil. You and Andy are on the same team, the team that tries to improve Wikipedia. You guys disagree about how to improve Wikipedia but you both have good intentions for both Manning and Wikipedia. I am on the other team, I frequently try to destroy Wikipedia by doing something that looks very similar to a DDoS attack when I am not out killing baby seals for fun and profit. Sceptre, before I weigh in on this, I do want you to know that I do not agree with your position on the articles that led to the BLPBAN. (In other words, I'm not on your side in the content dispute.)

That said, while Shirik makes a good point that the appeals on enforcement of bans would normally fall under the ban appeals subcommittee, I feel that Sarek of Vulcan in this case acted outside the Pillar and Policy of Civility. Specifically, while a BLPBAN was implemented (by Sarek), the specifics of the ban were not communicated in clear language to the recipient of that ban. (Specifically he said, "BLPBAN imposed".)

While Sarek sort of warned Sceptre at AN/I about having 'blatantly violated' the ban, this was almost immediately after Sarek enacted the ban and was within the framework of the discussion at AN/I. Sceptre clearly did not understand how the ban was to operate. And similarly, in this event, responding to a question on his own talk page, Sarek decided to throw down the block-hammer, still having not clearly explained the BLPBAN provisions, but expecting instant comprehension and compliance from Sceptre.

Basic civility demands that we notify an editor clearly within the relevant discussion (i.e. AN/I) or their Talk page, so that they can be expected to have a clear understanding. I would characterize what is currently being done as "gotcha" approach to enforcing a ban, where the editor is unwittingly stepping into a trap without being made aware that these actions are wrong. For this reason, I would ask that Sarek's topic ban continue, but that he explain it clearly, and in future either stay well clear of Sceptre and ask for another admin to administer this ban, or clearly warn Sceptre in advance of any punitive action. I also took a look at the notice that was placed here by Sarek on 25 June at 2:23, and it says "topic-banned from edits relating to Bradley Manning, broadly construed" with 'Bradley Manning' as a link to the article. Now, for people who implement bans a lot, this may seem perfectly clear, but considering that the other editor who engaged Sceptre in discussion, Arcandam, was confused when the block got imposed, another reasonable way to look at that notice is that the editor is banned from editing the linked article, or possibly articles that are content-forks off it. Obviously it wasn't clear to Arcandam, and I would say not clear to Sceptre either. Basic, thoughtful civility could have worked to everyone's advantage here. As stated at the AN/I discussion, Sceptre hadn't even been messing with the Bradley Manning page, so a ban or block wasn't a pressing concern. For an editor who is currently and generally in compliance with community standards, it is inappropriate to be so harsh. Again, I would ask for an admin to ask Sarek to give a full and plain description of how this ban is to work, unblock Sceptre and allow things to get back to normal. How do we even know if Sceptre is learning and improving if they can't even have a conversation with another editor who is trying to discuss with them? -- Avanu (talk) 06:02, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

I have a brain the size of a planet. I can back that statement up with refs. But still I did not notice the ban changed from articles related to Manning to all edits. And I do not understand why it should be. If Sceptre needs to be blocked I will file a request. Until then please give us the chance to have a productive conversation about this. While I would normally agree with people saying "this is an AE action", if it were a legitimate block, I don't see how Sceptre was given any understanding by Sarek. Oblique comments and templated posts don't make for good communication. Page Triage newsletter

Hey all. Some quick but important updates on what we've been up to and what's coming up next :).

The curation toolbar, our Wikimedia-supported twinkle replacement. We're going to be deploying it, along with a pile of bugfixes, to wikipedia on 9 August. After a few days to check it doesn't make anything explode or die, we'll be sticking up a big notice and sending out an additional newsletter inviting people to test it out and give us feedback :). This will be followed by two office hours sessions - one on Tuesday the 14th of August at 19:00 UTC for all us Europeans, and one on Wednesday the 15th at 23:00 UTC for the East Coasters out there :). As always, these will be held in #wikimedia-office; drop me a note if you want to know how to easily get on IRC, or if you aren't able to attend but would like the logs.

New Pages newsletter

Hey all :)

A couple of new things.

First, you'll note that all the project titles have now changed to the Page Curation prefix, rather than having the New Pages Feed prefix. This is because the overarching project name has changed to Page Curation; the feed is still known as New Pages Feed, and the Curation Toolbar is still the Curation Toolbar. Hopefully this will be the last namechange ;p.

On the subject of the Curation Toolbar (nice segue, Oliver!) - it's now deployed on Wikipedia. Just open up any article in the New Pages Feed and it should appear on the right. It's still a beta version - bugs are expected - and we've got a lot more work to do. But if you see something going wrong, or a feature missing, drop me a note or post on the project talkpage and I'll be happy to help :). We'll be holding two office hours sessions to discuss the tool and improvements to it; the first is at 19:00 UTC on 14 August, and the second at 23:00 on the 15th. I make no pretence that I am a fan, I guess the majority articles about (living) people are started and mainly contributed by those who are 'fans', but my contibutions have been done in good faith regards neutrality (as a newbie I have made mistakes...like not spotting blogs) I always take personal criticism and attacks maybe too seriously but I have said I welcome genuine verifiable editing contributions from others, even when they remove my contributions, which can be seen from page history.

Page Curation update

Hey all :). We've just deployed another set of features for Page Curation. They include flyouts from the icons in Special:NewPagesFeed, showing who reviewed an article and when, a listing of this in the "info" flyout, and a general re-jigging of the info flyout - we've also fixed the weird bug with page_titles_having_underscores_instead_of_spaces in messages sent to talkpages, and introduced CSD logging! As always, these features will need some work - but any feedback would be most welcome.

Page Curation newsletter

Hey Sceptre. This will be, if not our final newsletter, one of the final ones :). After months of churning away at this project, our final version (apart from a few tweaks and bugfixes) is now live. Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. GOCE November drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 38 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy-edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. All the barnstars have now been distributed. Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing November and December 2011 from the backlog. For the first time since the drives began, the backlog consists only of articles tagged in the current year. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 56 requests outstanding before November 2012 as well as eight of those made in November. Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the October 2012 competition, and prizes have been issued. The November 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The December 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote. Russell T Davies 'marriage'

I appreciate your concern for wording and citing his recent ceremony correctly - I would appreciate if you would help to do this, or would participate in a discussion, rather than simply removing any mention of his marriage/marriage announcement. Presumably once the new DWM comes out with the news announcement, that would count as an acceptable source, even though their source is Andrew's Twitter account? From my activist side I always have to emphasise that the current situation currently is not marriage, unfortunately (but hopefully, that should change soon). I think if it gets picked up in DWM, that would count, even if they source Twitter themselves; unfortunately, we can't use non-verified twitter accounts as sources. Hello, Sceptre; I appreciate your comments at the ANI discussion.

I did, however, want to correct what you think I think. The description(s) of my beliefs on my BLP are not quite accurate. (You might want to look through the page's history to see how exactly that description came to be.) What I said (and believe) is just my observation from being a psychologist accompanying very many people on their various journeys understanding their sex/gender and how to integrate it into their lives. The point I was making to the reporter (from Toronto's local GLBT paper), was that folks early in the process often have trouble distinguishing between what it is that they want for themselves and what they are doing in order to fulfill the expectations or desires of others. That is, as they continue to explore their gender and sexuality, they better understand their motivations, and their personal narratives change.
