Thank you for catching that disambiguation page link to Témoignages on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints membership statistics. I copied a source over from another page, and didn't check the link to see if the link was accurate. I fixed it and the link on my source page, Réunion. They both now link to Témoignages (newspaper). which is a page that unfortunately doesn't exist, but at least it's accurate. Feel free to remove this message. Disambiguation link notifications

The "funeral" section of the Roger Ebert article

The DPL bot notified me, on my "Talk" page, that I had inadvertently linked "Holy Name Cathedral" to that text string's disambiguation page when, of course, I meant to link said text string to the Wikipedia article about the Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. My response on my "Talk" page is:

Hmmm. Well, I certainly didn't mean to link to the disambiguation page. I do remember landing on it, though, when looking for the Holy Name Cathedral article; and then opening Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral article on its own tab to the immediate right. I wonder if I somehow got confused about which tab was which when I was jumping around to grab links during my edit of the Ebert article. Hmmm. Well, no matter, I just fixed it; and gave as my reason that I accidentally linked to the disambiguation page instead of Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral page... my bad. Thanks! Gregg L. As I explain on my "Talk" page, I always place the entire conversation thread on poth participants' "Talk" pages so that it's all easier to follow, hence the reason I've now done that here. This bot's pretty cool, I must say. I do agree with the earlier commenter, though, that it's a little informal; the only downside of which, really, is that it may mislead the recipient of a notice into thinking that a human actually wrote it. Just my two cents worth... which my ex-wife used to always point out is typically all it's worth. [grin]

Should you report regarding hatnotes?

I have received several dab notes in the past, but this was the first that was wrong, in fact, obviously wrong. Why? It was regarding a hatnote for The Tunnel (novel), and of course the link was to the dab page. In fact, it was in preferred style, with a pipe forcing the word "disambiguation" to appear to the user, instead of the raw The Tunnel. I suppose notification is still necessary here, but perhaps it would go over better, from the notifiee point-of-view trying to remember what he did, if you use a different message acknowledging the hatnote? The problem was the piping. Per WP:D#HOWTODAB, the link should not have been piped; the guideline is focused primarily on how the link is stored internally, more than how it is displayed to the reader. Hi JaGa - is there any way of disabling the bot for "Lists of words"? Often there is a deliberate intention of connecting to the dab page, since a word origin will be identical for several of them. Synchronisation problem with "what links here"

This is the second time I've noticed this problem. (The first time you blamed me for it!)

  • The template {{Islands of the Qikiqtaaluk Region}} used to link to Camp Island. Now it links to Camp Island (Nunavut).
  • This template is on MANY pages.
  • If you do a "what links here" on both pages, you will see two different lists of pages.
  • If you choose a page from the "Camp Island" list, (any page), and examine it, you will see that page does NOT link to "Camp Island". You will, however, see that it DOES link to "Camp Island (Nunavut)".

i.e. "What links here" has some sort of synchronisation problem, and it is causing your bot to put templates on pages that do not merit them.

Clarification request

I noticed that it's not immediately obvious from the bot's messages that they have been written by a machine, and I've seen some new users writing back and 'answering' the bot on their talk pages. Perhaps it should be made more clear that this is pointless, and their messages cannot be answered by the bot.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 15:25, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Are they asking it questions? If not, it seems as harmless as it is pointless, like talking to a pet. I still do it, after seven years. But yeah, it might be better if the bot was a bit more upfront about what it was (and not refer to itself as "we"). Got the wrong editor

Don't know if this qualifies as a full-on "glitch", but the bot seems to think [1] I added some disambiguation links when, in fact, these links existed since the original version of the page [2] which was created by someone else. Taroaldo ✉ 20:48, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Might be because the only other editor doesn't have a userpage. May not register with the bot. So when it sees you save a page with the same links, it figures it was you who created them, by default. Just a guess. Fixed those for you, anyway. InedibleHulk (talk) 12:47, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Archive search; and any way to integrate bot into "Show preview" step of edit?

My own talk page (User talk:Swliv) uses an archive template that permits a "search" function {{archives|search=yes|...}} in the archives box. It's nice. Here, I had to search each of the four files to see if I'd already registered my second comment of today. (I know I've registered it somewhere, but looks like not here and here's the place.) I'm not the programmer to give you a search function but I do hereby give you a bit on that way, here. You'll see I've installed "|search=yes" above to no avail.

Re: my integration request. I haven't searched the four files to see if you've already addressed such a question. I really expect you have. But I encountered the reality again here (and see above that for my several "interventions" with this partic. ed.) today; and I think it every time I myself slip up. I'm sure the programming would be monstrous but it would be wonderful. I think the dab system of Wiki is one of its quiet gems and this bot does so much to make it smooth and efficient. If you could "red label" a link to a dab page in the Show preview step of an edit you'd at least save me (and I expect many others) considerable anguish.

Erroneous addition of incoming links template to Schönegg

DPL bot added the incoming links template to the Schönegg dab page I recently created, saying it was linked from a large number of articles. This surprised me, because I thought I'd done a proper job.

Special:WhatLinksHere seems to agree with the bot, which surprised me even more, but when I tried using Dab Solver to solve the ambiguities, it couldn't find the offending link (apart from one case I'd already marked with Template:dn). And I cannot find them either by eyeballing the article sources. In most cases the only reference to Schönegg is via Template:Cities and towns in Rohrbach (district), and that template correctly links to Schönegg, Upper Austria.

(talk page stalker) No, the fact that Special:Whatlinkshere shows the links as existing means that it is not a problem with the bot. In fact, I think the problem is with the job queue that is supposed to clean up the link database after a template is edited. Queue processing has been very slow lately; it is typically taking 24-48 hours after a template edit, and sometimes longer, before the links are fixed. When the queue is processed, DPL bot will remove the template automagically. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 12:31, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Erroneous addition of incoming links template to Schlossberg

Just checked on a few other dab pages I've created recently, and noted another case at Schlossberg. Again this seems to be related to a lot of articles using a template which is itself correctly disambiguated. Again Special:WhatLinksHere agrees with the bot, but Dab Solver (and manual inspection) does not.

But in this case the disambiguation was some days ago, so this cannot be some sort of obscure caching issue. I'm guessing this is not directly a problem with your bot, but something broken at a lower level that is affecting both the bot and Special:WhatLinksHere. Gotta tell ya - I'm very impressed with the way you have implemented this bot, and in my (of course, completely unbiased) POV, it's mainly due to the choice of wording in what you post on people's talk pages. It's slightly embarrassing to have it pointed out that one has "stuffed up", but your choice of words concentrates on fixing the problem rather than emphasising that someone has stuffed up. The contrast with the beta-command-bot's approach is dramatic. Whereas beta-command-bot used to thoroughly annoy me, my response to your bot and it's talk page posting is "Damn, stuffed up again. Software/bot bug?

Hello and thank you for your bot messages. Just a note to let you know of a problem I had with it: When I pressed the option "fix with Dab solver" in my talk page,([3]) I entered the correct intralink, and saved it. What happened then is that the software changed all the "[" and "]" characters for the # symbol: [4]. I reverted it and used the normal editing procedures. You're right, it shouldn't have notified you. I think it has to do with when you removed an infobox; I've seen this before when people remove hatnotes from pages. There must be something going on with the curly bracket pattern matching. Ambiguation warning internal links

This bot warned me of three ambiguous links in the new article on Cyclopygidae. Two (distribution and extant) I repaired (to Range (biology) and Extant taxon respectively). The third however, (Taxonomy), is the automatically generated title of a paragraph in this article and it does not link to the article on taxonomy. So it should not be "repaired". Strike Force

The issue with Bruce Gordon has been corrected. The issue with the term "Strike Force" stands. The generic term listed is correct : "Strike force, term for the unit, such as of the army or police force, of a special assault assignment team used in offensive tactics (compare to quick reaction force in defense tactics)" That's what a police "Strike Force" is , and that's what this T.V. show is about. Granted, it is about a specific police Strike Force , the Los Angeles Police-based unit-but the intended reference is correct, and doesn't need to be changed. Thanks. There really shouldn't be definitions like that on a disambig page - that could be removed at any time. In this case I would normally either remove the link altogether, since it's pretty reasonable to expect the reader to know what a strike force is, or link it to the wiktionary def. --JaGatalk 02:41, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

False incoming link results from navbox

Hi! I'm sure your bot does very good work. But it gives false results for incoming links to disambiguation pages when a page included in a navbox has been moved, even if the navbox has been edited following the move. Jean Machine is a current example. Few pages link there, but your bot has placed an incoming links template. Could it perhaps be asked to check the relevant navbox template before doing that? In this case it does not matter, as presumably it will go back and remove the tag in a few days. At Accademia, where there really were a lot of incoming links that needed dealing with and it did the same thing, it was less than helpful. Hmm, as I write this, it occurs to me that it may be the wiki software itself and not your bot that is getting this wrong. If so, I apologise. Who can be asked to fix this? Yes, I'm sure that is what is happening. It's not a big deal, but the bot placed the tag template about twelve hours after the navbox template was had been fixed. Actually, the bot does double check before it tags, but unfortunately it sometimes takes a while for changes in a template to be propagated to Wikipedia's pagelinks database. If you edit a template, that isn't actually an edit on the page that contains the template, so the article that includes it doesn't get automatically updated in the database like a normal edit does. There's a job that says "oh, hey, this template's been changed, I'd better tell the wiki to update its record of pagelinks for every article that contains this template". It frequently works in real time, but sometimes it gets backlogged and you see lagged results like this. --JaGatalk 21:44, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
OK, if you and or it are doing your best, that's quite good enough for me. It might be an idea to include a "may not reflect recent changes" disclaimer on the incoming links template, perhaps? Link redirecting back

Hi, The article Thalassery biryani got a disambiguation tag which I resolved. I need your help. http://toolserver.org/~dispenser/cgi-bin/dablinks.py?page=Thalassery_biryani A link reverting back issue could not be resolved. Do you have any way in which this can be resolved? There is another link named Thalassery biriyani for Thalassery biryani (Please check the spelling one is biriyani and the other biryani), this could be mainly because of the pronunciation differences of different people. I also found another page of the same name Thalassery biryani redirecting to itself, where as there is a page with same name having content. I removed the redirection scripts and left the page blank, but still the error is seen. So please help if possible, I am pretty new to wiki, trying to learn. Patrolling set index articles

Would it be possible to get DPL bot to patrol certain set index articles? My concern is with those in Category:Set indices on plant common names. I think it would be helpful to notify editors of links made to these pages and to track those pages with large numbers of incoming links, as DPL bot does. Sycamore, and List of plants known as lotus are two I'm aware of with a large number of incoming links, although I'm sure there are others. I'm coming here after some discussion at Talk:Nettle_(disambiguation) about splitting off a set index for the use of nettle as a common name for various plants; loss of bot patrol in a SIA is a concern and a possible argument against the split.

"Disambiguating" multiple plants which share a common name within the constraints of WP:MOSDAB is difficult. While many of the existing plant common name SIAs currently conform with MOSDAB, more information than MOSDAB allows will usually be needed to help the reader find the plant they are looking for. See Blue lily for an (imperfect) example of a SIA that doesn't conform with MOSDAB, but which, I believe, is more useful to the reader than a MOS compliant DAB would be. Greetings and... feedback/requests

Greetings DPL bot and bot owner. As an appreciative "collaborator" with this great bot, I was wondering if there is any way that it could be tweaked to kick in (or whatever it is that bots do...) when a user hits the preview button prior to saving the edits to a page (maybe as an option). On the other hand, to prevent edit conflicts, could it be tweaked to not "kick in" when a page has an {{in use}} tag on it? Sorry if the above points have been raised elsewhere, but as I don't follow these things, I'm afraid I have no idea as to what the policy/state of the art is here. To have the editor point out dablinks upon preview would require a level of integration that I don't have access to. On the other hand, I think checking for {{in use}} is doable, and a very reasonable idea. I'll look into it, but it may be a while before I get it done since I've just started back to school and am trying to migrate to Tool Labs. Leavy and Levy

Your disambiguation notification, Leavy and Levy are categorized as disambiguation pages, but, actually contain surname articles within that are not elsewhere in the Wikipedia. If memory serves, Leavy is only a surname article. Each of these articles either needs to be recatergorized or have its surname sections broken out into new Wikipedia articles. The bad link was Delta. You could have searched the page and clicked the link to see it goes to a disambig. I have obviously (several messages telling me so) been using links improperly, but I don't understand the linking process. I thought that links were simply cross-references to other Wikipedia articles whose titles were the linked words: click on the link and the other article pops up. But now I'm told that the double-bracket links are used only as "disambiguation links," which apparently refers to articles with titles identical to that of the article in which the link appears but different content. And these disambiguation links come out red in the article where they are inserted, whereas other links come out blue. What does red signify, and what does blue signify? Also, if double brackets are improper for linking to another Wiki article bearing the title of the linked phrase, what is the proper way to insert a blue link (assuming blue refers to a separate article whose title is the linked phrase)? The blue links means there's a link to another page within Wikipedia. The red link means there's no article. We're only concerned with the blue links. Let's look at your edit to Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. When you edited it, you added a link to Walter Kaufmann. Click on the link to Walter Kaufmann. Is that where you wanted the link to go? The problem is, you didn't make the link specific enough to go to the correct article. which sent it to the Walter Kaufmann disambig. How do we send the link to Walter Kaufmann (philosopher) without displaying the qualifier? With a piped link:

now the link displays as Walter Kaufmann but when you click it, it goes to Walter Kaufmann (philosopher). Tricky stuff, but very useful. Dablinks and tables

Recently, I merged the content of the articles Conflux and Dissension into other articles, then made those two articles disambiguation pages. A little while later, you slapped the "30+ links" notice on the talk page. Nearly all of the incoming links were from a table; a table that has now been changed to not link to Conflux or Dissension. But the incoming links are still showing up. Why is that? What can I do to stop that? (FWIW, I removed the notice from Conflux; Dissension is a 2-page disambiguation with one of them under a PROD so I'm not worried about that) pbp 05:39, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Tables? You probably mean templates. When a template is edited, the links in the pages that contain it are updated asynchronously (i.e., "some time later"). See Help:Job queue#Updating links tables when a template changes. Currently, this seems to take anywhere from one to three days, although it can vary widely depending on the load on the servers. Just be patient and they will catch up eventually, and when they do the bot will remove its notice from the disambiguation page. (Removing it manually won't help if the links aren't fixed yet, because the bot will just put it back.) --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:22, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

"Check to confirm" tells you whether the problem still exists or not. "Fix with Dab solver" links to a tool you can use to make the fixing easier. Clicking the links won't affect your account in any way, nor will they obligate you to do anything. Spurious dablink notification

Hello. This bot gives spurious dablink notification in some circumstances. An example recently:

  1. I moved Ghulam Mohiuddin to Ghulam Mohiuddin (actor)
  2. The moved article contained uses of Template:NigarAwardBestActor and four other similar templates
  3. I updated the references to the moved article in the templates
  4. I updated all visible incoming links to the moved article
  5. I recreated Ghulam Mohiuddin as a disambiguation page
  6. "What links here" for Ghulam Mohiuddin continued to show incoming links from other articles using the templates
  7. DPL bot also counted incoming links as they had been from the templates before their update.

The same problem occured with links to Ghulam Ahmed (now redirected to Ghulam Ahmad) after the old Ghulam Ahmed wss moved to Ghulam Ahmed (cricketer), where the article contained Template:Indian Test Cricket Captains. I know I can fix this by doing null edits on the articles using the templates, but that's precisely the sort of thing that bots are meant to do for us, isn't it? Your bot does not allow template links to update before tagging. This is a bug that reports every item in a template as linking to dab pages when the link in the template was dabbed recently. Hello. This bot's only task is to notify editors who link to a disambiguation page. The place you probably want is Wikipedia:Peer review.
One problem I notice is your sources aren't what Wikipedia calls reliable secondary sources. They are too closely related to the subject, and from sites which basically anyone can edit to say anything (and your Facebook source just looks like a bunch of Javascript code). If a subject isn't covered by secondary sources (independent newspapers, magazines, websites, books), it may be considered non-notable and deleted.
Also, if you mean "my article" as "article about me", you may want to read WP:COS. If you mean "article belonging to me", see WP:OWN.

Incoming links template

Hi, it seems that DPL bot adds 38 characters when adding the {{incoming links}} template, but only removes 37 when removing it. Is it possible that it is missing a newline when it removes the template? See [6] and [7] for an example. -- (talk) 14:05, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

Confirm link shows page does not exist, tho DAB solver then worked

Thanks for picking up the disambiguation pages linked to the new page I created, Robert McDonald (missionary). I corrected the links using DAB solver, but was surprised that when I tried clicking on the confirm link first, it said the page did not exist. I thought that might be because the page was open in another window, but the error message recurred after I saved that edit and tried again. I'll leave the notice on my talk page for a few more days, in case it's a problem someone needs to look at or confirm. Toolserver replag permanent - Dab solver needs porting

Hi JaGa; My understanding is that the Toolserver replag is permanent, and that pointing people off to use Dab solver on it is not helpful. You ought to alter the message until such time as Dab solver is ported to labs. Josh Parris 12:03, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

I don't know how to decipher the above, but today received a notice about links to disambiguation pages on two pages I recently edited, Henry Budd and Lillian Trasher. In both cases, when I used the check to confirm link, I got erroneous reports--that the new Henry Budd page didn't exist (tho when I used the DAB solver link it correctly found the disambiguation page link cited) and that the other page didn't have any links to disambiguation pages (DAB solver also couldn't find it, but when I went to the page and searched for the cited term (a city), then clicked on the link, sure enough a disambiguation page showed). Thus, I don't know if the problem is with the DPL bot or something else, since in both pages it was right, but the followup tools wrong. My worry is with the many pages I previously didn't check so diligently, figuring someone else had corrected disambiguation page links when in fact I might have relied on a false negative from DAB solver.Jweaver28 (talk) 22:16, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

New feature proposal

I got warned by your bot several times, so I thought we could improve a resource to better point to the most accurate page. The bot or a program could calculate the percentage of words that are the same in the original linking page and the different possible pages, so it could present one or a few of them as a better fit for the disambiguation.
