Please cut the arrogance from your talk page notices

Hi DPL, thanks for the message and for the bot which is no doubt doing great work, but is it really necessary to say "Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed..."? This comes across as arrogant and patronising, particularly when addressed at reasonably experienced editors such as myself. Who is "we" anyway? I thought I was a member of the Wikipedia community. Just a notice saying that I've linked to a disambig page would be sufficient. Thanks  — Amakuru (talk) 12:27, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

Not quite "merely"

The BOT message says "Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles."

Not all pages marked as disambiguation pages are merely that. For example Psychophysiology, which includes a paragraph of general definition at the top. There are others like that as well, but I don't have any examples right now.

Maybe use "usually" instead of "merely". Lou Sander (talk) 14:28, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Dab solver bugged

I keep receiving messages from DPL bot, but the dab solver can't even find the links on a page that need to disambiguated. "0 points on this page" Lbertolotti (talk) 15:09, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

In fact, "Lorenz", although bears some disambiguations, is the proper namespace for the surname Lorenz. The introduction writes:

Lorenz is an originally German name derived from the Roman surname, Laurentius, which mean "from Laurentum".

which is exactly why I added Lorenz to this article.

But anyway, thank you for your attention. :) --- SzMithrandir (talk) 15:14, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

An article with that name doesn't exist. If you remember it existing before, it may have been deleted for lack of notability, and its content added to the section of the article you found. In that case, you'll learn everything you would have from a separate article.

hndis pointing to hndis

You pointed to my edit to the hndis page Michelet, which itself points to another hndis. There is plenty of precedent for a pattern like that. Is that pattern always called out as an error, or was the fact that Michelet is actually a {{surname}} what makes it different? David Brooks (talk) 04:57, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguation Links from Estelle Evans and Rosanna Carter

Dear DPL bot,

I received your message on my user talk page earlier this morning. In case you do not know what I am talking about, the message said that on my edits for actresses Estelle Evans and Rosanna Carter led to links to disambiguation pages. Normally, I ignore these messages because I do not have the time to look over them. But since today is a Sunday, and I do not have to be at church for a while, I decided to look over what you were talking about. I fixed the problem and just wanted to say thank you for noticing that unintentional mistake. I just joined almost three weeks ago and I am still getting used to editing Wikipedia articles and the many symbols, guidelines, and instructions for using and editing Wikipedia. Hopefully, in the upcoming weeks and/or months I will get used to it.

Thanks again; Mr. Yondris Ferguson (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 11:42, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

30 or more incoming links

I undid this edit. It says the article has 30 or more incoming links, but it doesn't. If you click "What links here" you get a long list, but that's because of a limitation of "What links here". All (or almost all) of the supposedly incoming links come from the {{Hillsong albums}} template, which links to Amazing Love (Hillsong) not Amazing Love, now and at the time of the bot edit. There are probably zero, and certainly not 30, articles that link to Amazing Love. Art LaPella (talk) 21:38, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

  • (talk page stalker) Art LaPella, looks like the link on the template was fixed, but then all of the articles that transclude that template were not "purged" after the link on the template was disambiguated. I believe that DPL bot gets its count from the "What links here" page; if all of the pages that transclude the template are not immediately "dummy saved" afterwards, the links are still going to appear on that list. As far as I know, there's no other way to get an accurate link count. (I believe that all pages get "dummy saved" at least once a day, but I could be wrong about that.) Steel1943 (talk) 21:45, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Broad Terms requiring new pages

I got the notice for disambiguation links for Historical dynamics and Social Science History Association. I fixed a few of them, but ran into a problem with Urban and Labor.

  • The Social Science History Association is a group of social historians covering every topic in time and space. They might write about labor movements for the last 1000 years in China. They might talk about labor relations, or labor negotiations, or labor and government -- there are no bounds on the topic. When I read the dab page for Labor, it was the best choice for visitors to SSHA's article. Is there a way to mark links to dabs so the robot knows it was deliberate?
  • For the Historical dynamics page, the situation is similar. I changed projections to computer projections, since that is the most common use of the term for social historians looking at historical dynamics. But it means I have to write a page to explain that use, and then fix the dab page for projections. Many of the relevant articles show up if you do a wikipedia search for planning projections. You will notice that I have many red links yet, too. Some of them are valid topics that need articles. Some of them may need to be redirected to pages, once I can figure out where they should go.
  • I have asked some people to look at the pages to see if they need corrections. It will take time to resolve many issues, and to write the articles for the red linked topics, where appropriate. I put the rough versions out where others can review and contribute. Since many pages and links are involved, it was too hard to do it in one step (resolve all dabs and red links).
Kind regards, RC711 (talk) 21:34, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

DPL bot has a bug

Dear JaGa, I want to bring to your attention a bug with DPL bot. I have now twice been "notified" on my talk page of creating an "unintentional" link to a disambiguation page ... after an {{Rfd}} template was placed on the redirect after I intentionally retargeted it to the disambiguation page. Here are the two examples: one for placing the template on R.O.C. (most likely for this edit, but I placed the {{Rfd}} template on the following edit), and another for Contact (1997 film) (most likely for this edit, but I was not the one who placed the {{Rfd}} template; that was done in the following edit). It's almost as though the bot is not realizing that these are intentional soft redirects, or possibly need to know not to message an editor if the {{Rfd}} tag has been placed on the redirect (since the tag temporarily converts the redirect to a soft redirect until the template is removed.) Thanks, Steel1943 (talk) 14:48, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Hmmm, it should have excluded pages up for deletion. I'll check it out, but I'm afraid it will be a while long time before I get the chance. You may want to opt-out from the messages in the meantime. Sorry about the hassle. --JaGatalk 02:30, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

How To Lock an Article

Dear DPL bot,

I have a question for you. I figured it would be smart to let a bot answer this question and I did not want to spend all that time at the help desk of Wikipedia. I have been looking at other fellow Wikipedian's userpages, (such as those of Steel1943 and SummerPhD for example) have been vandalized.

That has gave me great concern. I was recently looking at the user page of another member and noticed that their page was locked to everyone but that person. I would like to know how to do that. Could you possibly tell me how, please? Thank you. Mr. Yondris Ferguson (Leave a Comment) 06:00, 27 June 2014

  • (talk page stalker) (I did not get a ping) @Mr. Yondris Ferguson: I wouldn't consider it "vandalizing" as I would consider it "a bug in the bot's function". DPL bot is clearly useful, and the bug I reported is something that the bot's operator will get to in due time. But, what I'm more concerned about in your response is your claim that "...another member [has] their page ... locked to everyone but that person." As far as I know, that is not possible. Who are you referring to? (Note: if you are providing their name, I would recommend utilizing the {{No ping}} template.) Steel1943 (talk) 20:33, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

Links from hatnotes to disambiguation pages

On the page titled Constructability (with an "a" in the third syllable) I put a hatnote saying that other senses of (a slightly different spelling of) the word could be found under Constructibility (with an "i" in the third syllable), a disambiguation page. I got a not from this bot saying I had probably unintentionally linked to a disambiguation page.

That kind of link to a disambiguation page is a standard thing. Doesn't this bot take that into account? Michael Hardy (talk) 00:38, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Michael Hardy: You are right, links to disambiguation page are a standard thing in hatnotes. But intentional linking to disambiguation page needs to be done as described at WP:HOWTODAB. I've changed the hatnote accordingly. Cheers LittleWink (talk) 11:27, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
@LittleWink: I finally understood what you did, and have updated WP:HOWTODAB to reflect this useful trick. CapnZapp (talk) 17:45, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

incoming links

These links were all caused by its inclusion on Template:Albemarle County, Virginia. Once the template change was processed through the links table, all the links disappeared. Perhaps the bot could wait a few days before adding the incoming links template. --NE2 17:35, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

You can fix them manually, which is a pain. Click on the link in The Lego Movie Videogame. Once you're in the disambiguation page, select the page you want to use, return to The Lego Movie Videogame and pipe the link ([[right name|name you want to use]]). --Lineagegeek (talk) 14:37, 4 July 2014 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Bell Integrator, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Reply to message concerning August 2014 edits and contributions

Hi DPLbot, Milesjolly1997 here. Thanks for your message. I have tried to add links to some pages as I have recently worked out how to do so. I have added several links to the Lawrence of Arabia and The African Queen pages but was unaware that some of them were programmed to revert to disambiguation pages. I will see if I can fix the links. Thanks again. Milesjolly1997 (talk) 10:56, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

False accusations made by bot

Hi,

I made a page yesterday, , and your bot came along today and tagged it, saying the page linked to "a large number" of DAB pages.

I'm careful about that sort of thing, so I checked, and all my links were fine.

There is a template which I included, and that contains a lot of links to DAB pages. Your bot should complain to the makers/contributors of that template.

Your bot's behaviour is incorrect and annoying. Can you fix it or stop your bot? Thanks. Gronky (talk) 09:24, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

I'm nice to people. I've little patience for bots. Bots don't take things into account such as the fact that I took care in writing that article. Bots don't check. Bots assume they are right and the contributor can't possibly be smarter. IMO, there's a very high level of responsibility on bots to not annoy humans. ("technically correct" is a nonsense concept here. What the bot did is annoying, and shouldn't have happened, and that won't be changed by a technicality. This bot should be stopped until it is fixed.) Gronky (talk) 14:46, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
You seem to interpret a statement that an article contains a large number of links to disambiguation pages as a cricitism. It is not a criticism or a judgment, it is simply a statement of fact. As for the bot being annoying, well, that cannot be entirely avoided, since some people seem to have extremely low thresholds of annoyance. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:45, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
More to the point: can you please fix your bot? Thanks. Gronky (talk) 16:11, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
It's not my bot. Please note the first thing I said in my first comment above. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 17:26, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
You should have said that at the start instead of wasting my time. (At the start you added a tps template. I've never seen that before and I'd no idea what that was.) Gronky (talk) 18:05, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
It's not my bot, either. User:JaGa is the human you're after. InedibleHulk (talk) 17:37, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. Is there some central place where Wikipedians can complain about bots? The process of leaving comments on bots' talk pages doesn't work. Gronky (talk) 17:51, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Ksnow

Hello DPL bot,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Ksnow for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. ChicXulub (talk) 20:53, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Possible bug

Hi. About half an hour ago DPL bot created an empty page (List of people by 9 Star Ki type)[3] - it seems to be a one-off so I'm not overly worried, but thought you might be interested. I'm about to delete the offending page. WaggersTALK 14:04, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Definitely a bug. DPL bot also created the pages Danmeister664/sandbox, Pohjannaula/sandbox, Kl462/CornellConcertCommission, Colonel Warden/List of military commanders, Seafish1/sandbox, and DPL bot/Archive 3. I've tagged it all for CSD. I've mentioned the issue before User talk:DPL bot/Archive 5#Bug report - Creating blank pages, and it looks like the bot is starting again. The edit summaries are the same as last time: '(removing dablinks template; fewer than 4 disambig links (see the FAQ))' KJ Discuss? 15:22, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
These titles (except for the one in Waggers' message) all look like they are missing a namespace prefix; but the bot would not put a dablinks template on a page outside of the main namespace, so this is puzzling. Leaving this note for JaGa in case it helps with debugging. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:38, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Harry Bradley link

Thank you for your notification that on the page "Three of a Kind (1936 film)" I mistakenly linked actor Harry Bradley to the Harry Bradley disambiguation page. In fact that was not a mistake. There is no page for the actor of that name, so my link was in anticipation that there might eventually be one and all intending viewers of it would need to go via the disambiguation page since there are so many Harry Bradleys. The problem is that I could not guess in advance what the page creator might name the page; "Harry Bradley (actor)" or "Harry C. Bradley (actor)" are two possibilities. If I guessed wrong, the link on the "Three of a Kind (1936 film)" page would remain red. Linking to the disambiguation page means the link is blue and the red link appears instead on the disambiguation page, where it rightfully should be. Akld guy (talk) 20:34, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

Query

When your bot calculates incoming links, is there a way to disable talk pages? For example Satisfaction, has only talk page hits, some (most) of which are discussing the dab page itself and yes, they should all be Satisfaction (disambiguation) but talk pages are loosey-goosey and we cannot expect to have such formality be required. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 16:37, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

  • (talk page stalker) Carlos, can you provide more context for this query? Which bot function, exactly, gave you the impression that talk page links were being counted? AFAIK, they aren't, but if there is some specific message or page we could look at, it might help identify whether there is an exception that needs to be addressed. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 11:59, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

The page I just saw this happen on was Violet – here's DPL bot's edit and here's the list of inbound links. Actually, looking at it, I realise it's probably not counting talk pages, or it would have triggered long since, but there must be some namespace it's counting that it shouldn't, because there aren't anywhere near 30 actionable inbound links. — Paul A (talk) 02:49, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

  • (talk page stalker) Paul, DPL bot checks the incoming link counts twice a day. Yesterday, there was a link to Violet in a template used in well over 100 articles. I fixed that link promptly, so when you later looked at the list of incoming links, it didn't match up with DPL bot's earlier count. When DPL bot made its next run, 12 hours later, it would have removed the inbound links notice if you hadn't done it manually. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 09:40, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
Ah, okay. Thanks for the explanation. — Paul A (talk) 03:31, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Quick question

I notice here that the effect of two consecutive bot edits (adding then removing a template) is the addition of one blank line. I'm sure it doesn't matter, because i don't think blank lines affect viewing output, but i just wonder is there a reason for it? Is it an artefact of the process, a feature, a bug, something else? I might add, as a side point, that i appreciate the work of DPL bot; in my ID as User:Kahtar i use its information quite frequently. Cheers, LindsayHello 10:01, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Note of Thanks

Thank you for informing me of the mistakes which I inadvertently made. I definitely do not want to engage in disambiguation. The links that should have been deleted by me have already been removed. However, I did not "erase" the links attached to the names "Basque" and "Tudela" in the article on Musa ibn Musa ibn Qasi. The reason for my not having done so is that I did not see any indication on a disambiguation page that said links would result in just such an error. Once again, I appreciate your communication to me and the civil manner in which you expressed yourself. Be and stay well. Alambre (talk) 17:18, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Problems

Your tag serves no functional purpose. It does not identify where the problems are. It does not provide a solution. Searching further the tool server links that are two pages deep in the links provided, don't work. So how do we identify what links are wrong? How do we fix the problem? What your link DOES DO (what all tags do) is deface the look of our articles and downgrade the perceived credibility of wikipedia. Trackinfo (talk) 21:34, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Assuming you're talking about the September 25 notification, it says the problem is with Sollentuna and Cotham in Masters W50 3000 metres world record progression. Sollentuna has been fixed, but Cotham remains ambiguous. I'd fix it, but don't know where this event happened. If you do, you can fix the problem by specifying Cotham, Bristol or Cotham, Nottinghamshire. InedibleHulk (talk) 01:03, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

I fixed the disambiguation problem.

Hi, I got your notice about my having added links pointing to the disambiguation pages USF and Swig on the Swig Program in Jewish Studies and Social Justice article. I didn't know about disambiguation pages before, and I'm glad to know it now. Are you a person or a bot? Well, even bots like some appreciation... so thanks. And I fixed the problem. Cheers!
