Hello, I just added the chapter regarding Golden Hamsters to heWS, and I thought you might be interested in reading it or something. Thank you so much for adding the digital text for the chapter on "Golden Hamster" in Israel Aharoni's Memoirs of a Hebrew Zoologist. Yes, of course, I started domestication of the Syrian hamster and this text is the primary source material from the person who led the expedition to Aleppo to capture the hamster who eventually became the mother of all domesticated Syrian hamsters. I appreciate your integrating this text into Wikisource and yes, Google translate was sufficient for me to understand most of the chapter. After reading the primary text already I recognize differences in this account versus the summaries of partial translations which I have read everywhere.
I made links to your text in two places in that article. I will get the word around otherwise that this text exists. It is amazing to have it available. Thank you so much!
Could I ask why you did this? Was this because of hamsters, history of medicine, history of research, interest in the University of Jerusalem or in Aleppo, or some other reason? I appreciate the support because sorting foreign texts on hamsters is an extraordinary and unusual gift to receive, and you have completed a useful project for me and others in this space. I am very glad you liked it. I had a few Siberian hamsters some years ago. Eventually I read the article about Golden hamsters on the Hebrew Wikipedia and saw that there was this quite interesting book by the man who discovered it. Luckily a small publishing company had the book republished by scanning the pages of the original book and printing those scans on new paper, so I planned on buying it someday. A few months ago, I joined Wikipedia, and some time after that I ordered the book from the Internet. When it came I thought it would be a good idea to add it (or at least some of it) to Wikisource. I thought it would be quite helpful to you in improving the article about the domestication of this wonderful species.
Sorry for my bad English. Anyway, the chapter on hamsters was the only one I added to Wikisource because, well, I didn't think someone will really use this book.--Itsused (talk) 20:56, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

Your supportive communication over Berden

Dear Lane,
Thank you for your communication. You are right; I received an email from lawyers requiring me to take down the photos I took of Berden. Even though I subsequently changed the file names, descriptions and cats of those small number of files remaining which would be uncontroversial (such as details of flowers) , and leaving no indication of place other than the broad county, there has been a further requirement for me to take these down. You are also right in that the lawyer's email was bullying. However, as I know that the Foundation doesn't involve itself with such matters, leaving users to their own devices, I thought I would bend over for a quiet life.
What is particularly galling is that there are many photos of Berden village locations and people (including children) on the web, including the village's own website and Facebook page, where permission was obviously not sought from those depicted, and where there seems no movement from 'village elders' to take them down. What is equally galling is that I made a previous special journey to take many photos for my Berden Church article development, some of which are on the Berden website uncredited. There are elements of hypocrisy here.

Signpost editors

I feel that the current Signpost newsroom crew, especially the de facto coordinator, Evad37, are not appropriately recognized. There is a huge and unfair discrepancy between this list and reality. @Bri: Did you have something particular in mind? Updating that list is easy. I could strike names if that helped.
I can talk things through, and I can support other people in making statements, and I can suggest ways to remedy the situation, but I cannot take a leadership role or the responsibility for taking an action. At meta:Grants:Project/bluerasberry/fund_a_Signpost_publisher I made a proposal that the person serving in the role of coordinator should get a little funding support. I would like for people like Evad37 to have their time freed to be creative and make executive decisions and to not be bogged down with any routine.
There are other ways to give credit, but from my perspective, direct payment for assistance is among the least expensive ways to recognize the value of projects. I know the Wikimedia community would often rather pay $10,000 to fund a software development or a volunteer recruitment drive that generates what could be purchased outright for $1,000. Perhaps you have seen that in the Wikimedia chapter and user group system.
Some other things that I can offer are commitments to do a little Signpost writing for regular sections for a few weeks, a commitment to writing another special feature in the next 2 months, and availability by video or phone to talk things through. Without some stable labor commitments to take for granted it is challenging to commit to anything other than scrambling for labor and burning through our relationships. Wikimania report

Interviewed by Facto Post at the hackathon, Lydia Pintscher of Wikidata said that the most significant recent development is that Wikidata now accounts for one third of Wikimedia edits. And the essential growth of human editing.

Internet-In-A-Box

Impressive development work on Internet-in-a-Box featured in the WikiMedFoundation annual conference on Thursday. Hardware is Raspberry Pi, running Linux and the Kiwix browser. It can operate as a wifi hotspot and support a local intranet in parts of the world lacking phone signal. The medical use case is for those delivering care, who have smartphones but have to function in clinics in just such areas with few reference resources. Wikipedia medical content can be served to their phones, and power supplied by standard lithium battery packages.

Yesterday Katherine Maher unveiled the draft Wikimedia 2030 strategy, featuring a picturesque metaphor, "roads, bridges and villages". Here "bridges" could do with illustration. Perhaps it stands for engineering round or over the obstacles to progress down the obvious highways. Internet-in-a-Box would then do fine as an example.

"Bridging the gap" explains a take on that same metaphor, with its human component. If you are at Wikimania, come talk to WikiFactMine at its stall in the Community Village, just by the 3D-printed display for Bassel Khartabil; come hear T Arrow talk at 3 pm today in Drummond West, Level 3.

I'm going over the Signpost article you've been working on about other wikipedias. You mentioned the second most wikipedia about a language that is now #2 in the number of articles. FYI - 90% of these kinds of offers want us to help them with promotional brand editing which we will not do. If you get these from anywhere in the US then you can send them to Wiki NYC for an initial conversation, because we have experience ending the conversation quickly if what they want is out of scope. When we get good leads, we turn them over to anyone local we know, but the initial conversation can raise a lot of difficult questions for anyone who has not been through this several dozen times. who might be able to satisfy my curiosity. There's a steel? plaque at the top of the cylinder that reads "Fire Extinguisher on Wheels, inspected by Underwriters' Laboratories 13531".

I guess my questions are

  • How long ago was Underwriters Laboratories founded? (Just looked it up, after all I'm on Wikipedia!)
  • What could a simple steel cylinder like this do in a fire?
  • Why do I take photos of such things?

@Smallbones: Staff from UL go to some of the consumer rights conferences which I attend. At this point there are several dozen consumer rights organizations which have had friendly collaborations with Wikipedia. I have not meaningfully connected with any UL staff yet for a wiki project, but as time goes on the opportunity only becomes more ripe. Eventually I expect something will happen.
I talked with some communications staff at UL in the past and they were not aware of any particular published histories of their field of expertise. They also were not aware of published histories of UL itself - perhaps you can see that the wiki article is in poor shape. I am more interested in their advocacy positions than the organization itself, just because they have strong opinions on influential but obscure topics. I am not sure what relationship Wikipedia should have with product standards although I feel that there is some connection here and even more for Wikidata.
History of trade devices and manufacturing is underrepresented in Wikipedia. If Bri recognizes this then he knows more than me. The Internet Archive, so far as I know, has the best collection of trade manuals anywhere. Of course all of us - you , me, Bri and the rest - all have great interest in capturing all this cultural history because it is being lost and forgotten quickly. Undetectable = Untransmittable

I saw you as an active editor on several medical talk pages and while I try to stay current on the latest developments in HIV/AIDS I have to admit my ignorance of the U=U consensus statements by the International Conference on HIV/AIDS I've added it as a new section on the talk page of both the main HIV/AIDS and the Prevention of HIV/AIDS pages in hopes that it could be added to the topics. So I am trying to encourage/lobby you to take a look at this and contribute your expertise as an editor to my effort. Personally I don't know the jargon of Wikipedia and so as a result often get overwhelmed and intimidated by the process. It seems everytime I understand the latest template, editing process or citation method it changes. As a result, I feel like the perpetual newbie.

Yes, Wikipedia uses software from the late 1990s - being nonprofit, it is the only website with which anyone interacts with which has not had $100+ million development behind it. I am most appreciative of the trouble you have taken for a faithful and admiring way in which she has been portrayed. I am an indian born American, .... for the last 40 yrs in the US. I am also deeply grateful for the trouble and efforts you have expended for the Wiki, in your numerous articles. I am also a donor to the Wiki, and I share in your enthusiasm on this brilliant concept by Jimmy Wales.

I am very curious, to know, as to how you have learnt, presumably, such a native competency in Hindi. That is admirable - unless ofcourse, you were born in India. Still very admirable. I studied Hindi for ten years and unfortunately, am still, none the wiser. ;-) LOL

It mostly does not have documentation, and I had to learn some peculiar aspects of it. It is kind of surprising, but I think there is no sensible guide for uploading video to Wikimedia projects. It is not complicated but also without being told, there is no chance whatsoever that 95% of users could ever figure this out because the process is not intuitive at all and all on-wiki guides are nonfunctional.
I am not sure what to think of video to commons; I have used it in the past. Now this morning it has been going for 5 hours to convert this 800mb mp4 to webm. This happens on the wiki server side but I am not sure what to expect. I thought it would be done by now, and am sure that in the past the videos converted more quickly. The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.

Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.

10:30 am - 4:00 pm in Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Uris Center for Education
81st Street entrance, Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue

Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Light snacks, drinks and cake will be provided.

Under the heading rerum causas cognescere, the first ever Wikidata conference got under way in the Tagesspiegel building with two keynotes, One was on YAGO, about how a knowledge base conceived ten years ago if you assume automatic compilation from Wikipedia. The other was from manager Lydia Pintscher, on the "state of the data". Interesting rumours flourished: the mix'n'match tool and its 600+ datasets, mostly in digital humanities, to be taken off the hands of its author Magnus Manske by the WMF; a Wikibase incubator site is on its way. Announcements came in talks: structured data on Wikimedia Commons is scheduled to make substantive progress by 2019. The lexeme development on Wikidata is now not expected to make the Wiktionary sites redundant, but may facilitate automated compilation of dictionaries.

And so it went, with five strands of talks and workshops, through to 11 pm on Saturday. Wikidata applies to GLAM work via metadata. It may be used in education, raises issues such as author disambiguation, and lends itself to different types of graphical display and reuse. Many millions of SPARQL queries are run on the site every day. Over the summer a large open science bibliography has come into existence there.

Wikidata's fifth birthday party on the Sunday brought matters to a close. See a dozen and more reports by other hands.

@Bri: I doubt it; Wiki Ed supports people who demonstrate a staff affiliation at higher learning institutions with traditional accreditation. This person has not identified in this way so far as I can tell.
Just the same, I will greet them with links to the online instructor training. There is no need for anyone to have account creator rights unless they are organizing a large event for drop-in participants. Almost no instructors need creator rights. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:24, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

@Bri: Newsroom is probably best. I would prefer to seek editorial consensus on commentary. I think that we will find agreement about their confusion. I appreciate anyone else's views on the nature of that confusion and what possibilities we might have for helping to diminish it.

Just thinking about how to approach this. It's not a news show, so do we critique it for being inaccurate in its understanding of both copyright law and the functioning of an open-knowledge community? Or having a non-neutral tone, or making assertions of unproven things such as sonar causing beachings in the second segment? All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
