Ralf Appel

Hi! Thanks for your message, and thanks a lot for creating excellent chess bios here on the english wikipedia. They are really appreciated, and I wish more people would be so proper. On your specific question. I am afraid there is really no consensus amongst the chess-wikipedians. The main relevant notability guideline can be found at Wikipedia:Notability_(people)#Athletes and Wikipedia:Notability_(people)#Any_Biography. So any GM or anyone competing in the chess olympiads seems ok, as well as any winner of the national championship or other major tournament. As for Ralf Appel, I don't know whether the German first division qualifies as a fully professional league; and I don't know whether winning the blitz championship is enough. However, according to the german wikipedia, he seems to be on the verge of becoming GM (In der Saison 2007/2008 erfüllte er dort die letzte erforderliche Großmeisternorm.). So all in all, in this specific case I would say yes. The article would definitely not be a straightforward candidate for deletion as there are a lot of chess bios now, with far less notability. Chess related questions can always be asked at the talk page Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Chess. It is a meeting place for all chess enthousiast on wikipedia and quite active. The main article page of this talk page is also quite useful Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chess, it contains a list of common templates, wanted articles, etc.. I hope this helps a little! Best regards, Voorlandt (talk) 22:03, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Don't worry too much about an article getting deleted. It is really only relevant in cases where hardly any notability is established (like the recent Catherine Lip, WFM). I would translate some of your articles on the German wikipedia myself, if only my german was better :) My english isn't perfect either (being Belgian), but there is a ton of people who can correct grammar/spelling, but only a handful who create chess bios. Btw, if you have time, could you translate some of de:Ildiko Madl into the english wikipedia? (I realise it is a lot to translate as a whole!) The article has been topping our most wanted list for at least three months, and I was disspaointed to see only a poor stub created! Happy editing! Voorlandt (talk) 15:13, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Philipp Hirschfeld

Philipp Hirschfeld is admittedly not a particularly notable player, being an amateur of approximately IM strength, but he was good enough to test the best players of his day. Is it acceptable to translate articles from wikipedia in other languages? My article was not actually an exact literal translation, and it contained some additional material. By the way my German is very poor and I relied on machine translation, so if I mistranslated any part of the original article please feel free to correct it. I would also like to see some sources for his biographical details, but the original article did not cite any. Regards. MaxBrowne (talk) 09:08, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello MaxBrowne. Thank you for your message. I am little puzzled that you claim that the article is containing additional material since it is nothing but a literal translation of the article in de.wikipedia. However, the wikipedia copyright states that wiki texts can be used anywhere, but only when stated, where they come from. There are tags for imports from other wikipedias, however I am not familiar with en.wikipedia, so I don't know what they look like. For sources for the original article you should ask User Miastko, who wrote this article. Regards, --Gereon K. (talk) 11:09, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

alexander lake

Because there were two different atricles about different lakes in Alaska, Lake Alexander (Alaska) and Alexander Lake (Alaska). I found this rather confusing. The naming convention must be consistent, don't you agree? Hence I moven both of them. My mistake is that I didn't check that in Alaska lakes category tha names are "X Lake", rahter thal "Lake X" in other places I use to edit. Moving it accordingly... - Altenmann >t 23:05, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Madagascar embassy

I'm quite sure that this is not the actual definition of an edit war according to 1. Also, it would seem that I am not the only editor who object to the Falkensee locality of the Madagascan embassy 2. I suggest that we avoid empty accusations of edit warring behaviour unless actual edit warring is taking place.

More importantly, the two lists 3 and 4 have ALWAYS listed the Madagascan embassy as being in Berlin. So, since there has been general consensus since the beginning of these lists that we write Berlin and not Falkensee, it rests upon you to present argumentation, which is accepted by other editors, why we should deviate from the established consensus and write Falkensee and not Berlin. As you might be aware, all other diplomatic missions lists on wiki states the seat of government to which an embassy is accredited - and not the actual city or suburb where an embassy is located. It would be quite time consuming to go through these lists and change the names where needed.

Although I do appreciate that the actual city is Falkensee, it would make as little sense to write Falkensee, as it would be to write that the Afghani, Beninese and Kazakh embassies in Brussels are located in Uccle. I'm sure you wouldn't suggest that we write Uccle in the pages which are relevant to the lists of these countries?

If you insist that the name should be changed to Falkensee, I suggest that we have a third party mediate 5.

Wikidata and Interwiki links

You are receiving this as you have recently added an interwiki link to a page!

Wikidata has been deployed to the English Wikipedia. Wikidata manages interwiki links on a separate project on pages such as this. This means that on Wikipedia articles there is now a language bar on the left hand side of your screen where you can edit and add links rather than adding them into the articles themselves.

If you have any questions regarding Wikidata please use the talk page Wikipedia talk:Wikidata.

Maxwell Fuller

Hi Gereon, I have created an English Wikipedia article about Max Fuller, based primarily on your article. Please note a few minor corrections and additions to your article:

"1972 teilte er sich in Melbourne den Gewinn der australischen Einzelmeisterschaft mit Trevor Hay, die Play-off-Entscheidung ging 5:5 aus." - Because of this, they were declared joint champions, a relatively rare occurrence.

"Beim Zonenturnier 1972 in Hongkong, das Eugenio Torre gewann, wurde er Vierter." - Actually, he finished equal second with Kan and Tan. The second qualifying place into the Interzonal was decided by the random drawing of lots. If Fuller had chosen the right envelope, he would have automatically gained the IM title and the Interzonal place, but Tan chose the correct envelope and went on to the Interzonal in Petropolis, Brazil.

I will upload a photo of Maxwell Fuller onto the English Wikipedia site later today. You are welcome to transfer it to the Wikipedia Commons and use it. :-)

All the best, Garybekker (talk) 09:53, 4 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Timur Gareev page updates

The page for chess grandmaster Timur Gareev is 2 years out of date. The spelling of his name should read Timur Gareyev. His peak rating is outdated as well. He recently took first place in notable tournament in Portugal and broke a world record for tandem blindfold chess. He has not approved photo on page and it would be nice to have a decent, current photo. I had made some of these changes, but they have been overwritten. If you are going to edit my edits, can you please make sure that you have correct, updated info especially to spelling of name and peak rating. Thank you. Hi Gereon K. Yeah, cut and paste with brain-fade error, I'm afraid. I'd done all the stars listed in Bulletin No.1 and moved onto those approved by the IAU WGSN on 21 August. I copied the text from one of the former stars; intended to modify it; then copied the new text for the latter stars - it's just I somehow forgot the modifying! The 21 August stars will no doubt be in Bulletin No.2, which I'm told is due out shortly, but in the meantime they are listed in the IAU Catalog of Star Names with the date of approval. I've corrected the error in the seven articles I'd done prior to today. Cuddlyopedia (talk) 08:04, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Not autopatrolled

I left you a "thank you" to cheer you up for this. The structural problem is that you're not autopatrolled, so your new pages are under scrutiny and there's usually a lot of semi-automatic tagging by patroller with no knowledge of the topics and some "rigidity". Something similar happened to me in January with a biography that with minor edits was accepted for the home page in the "Did you know" section, so it was a good article. They see a biography and one line without a specific in-line source, and they tag.

I am trying to propose expert users for the autopatrolled flag when I see them, but you have created only 8 articles so far on enWiki and something like 25 new articles is usually requested. So even if you're a clear reliable cross-wiki user be prepared with newly published biographies of living people that this is how it often works...--Alexmar983 (talk) 10:01, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I was also impressed by the limited self-control of the patroller on enwiki. When possible I am trying to do my best to put cross-wiki reliable editors in the AP group here. But I can only spare this experience only a small perctenage in the end. The only possible strtegy is that they write 20 articles of non-critical issues such as geography. Than it's much easier to provide the AP flag. I think also that with robust crosswiki editors 25 articles are strictly not required and 15 should be ok, but it is just my opinion and I don't want to "burn" a flag proposal if a rigid sysop shows up.
if you want I can also prepare from wikidata a lists of chess players having a article on at least 3-4 wikis but not enwiki. That should be a "safe" group. We have this new Listeria function, I don't know if you use it. I'm interfacing a lot of ns0 users with wikidata.--Alexmar983 (talk) 05:14, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you could prove with some statistics which patroller is performing an anomalous activity, but it is very subtle to parametrize. Facing directly with the specific incompetence is almost impossible. About languages, I think that it always useful to have a complete picture and use the biggest available information to follow the minimum energy pathway, that's what I say to newbies for example. I've also noticed that this patrolling is less agressive on non-living people, so for example you can make a list of dead chess players. To a genric newbie in something similar to this situation, I would suggest to dig in the less overpatrolled areas (less biographies, in case of a biography dead people, many wiki), reach 20-25 articles, get the AP flag, than you can enjoy enwiki a little bit more.--Alexmar983 (talk) 08:11, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Gereon K. I actually copied the information regarding the place of death from the Bulgarian version of the same article. I have been unable to confirm the details pertaining to his death with the help of other sources, so it may be a good idea to add a citation needed tag. It's sad that he died at such a young age, it must have been totally unexpected. Best wishes, Oleg Oleg Morgan (talk) 12:18, 9 January 2017

Viktorija NI

Hi Gereon.

You can also find in the German Wikipedia that it is clearly said that Viktorija Ni was married to Yury Shulman. And, believe me, it is public and known from everybody that they are separated since July 2016. An article from 2015 is also not reliable anymore. This couple is separated and they are going through divorce procedures and everybody knows that. To say that she is married to Yury Shulman is just false.

Hi Williamjonesjunior. Ok. I believe you. But please don't use chessgossip as a source here. Chessgossip as a source is not up to Wikipedia standards. Regards, --Gereon K. (talk) 16:36, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

chessgossip.com is just a source of information, but maybe not a source of information to be used in Wikipedia, that´s true, but I can tell you that it is pretty reliable. Anyway, I believe that we are giving false information to the public if we keep saying that she is married. Should we just not say a thing about her personal life or should we say the truth, which is already clear in the German Wikipedia and which every chess player in Illinois knows? Regards. William

IP block exempt

I have granted your account an exemption from IP blocking. This will allow you to edit through full blocks affecting your IP address when you are logged in.

Please read the page Wikipedia:IP block exemption carefully, especially the section on IP block exemption conditions.

Appropriate usage and compliance with the policy may be checked (through the use of CheckUser) periodically, due to the nature of block exemption, and block exemption will be removed when no longer needed (for example, when the block it is related to expires).

I hope this will enhance your editing, and allow you to edit successfully and without disruption. Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 19:24, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your AIV report of Ricari18

Hi Gereon K.! I hope you're doing well and having a great day! I wanted to start off by saying that I highly appreciate your diligence with keeping Wikipedia protected from vandalism and disruption, and shoot... to the point where you try to say something and report it here if you see off-wiki collaboration or posts from people that claim responsibility for the disruption. I commend your enthusiasm and your efforts. :-)

I'm sure you did what I would have done too: you navigated to the Wikipedia article, looked in the history, found the edit the user made and was being talked about on the Twitter post, and you reported it to AIV based on that edit. However, the AIV report you filed contained the external link to that Twitter post by someone claiming responsibility for the disruption. This information identifies the account to the social network account and hence the off-wiki personal information and identity of the person who operates that account. This constitutes a violation of Wikipedia's outing policy, something that administrators and oversighters take as an extremely serious violation and (if done maliciously or repeatedly) is followed up by very severe sanctions.

I feel that you didn't know about this policy, and that you provided the link not to be malicious or to out the individual, but to help Wikipedia put a stop to disruption - hence I'm just leaving you this message to let you know about the policy so that you're aware and so that you'll avoid this in the future; I'm obviously not going to do anything else. :-) Next time you need to report something like this, you need to do so privately and by either emailing an administrator, or by emailing the Arbitration Committee - just don't post links to the off-wiki website of other accounts or users on Wikipedia publicly like that. Even if the user is problematic, we cannot out other individuals and we must respect their right to privacy here.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks again for your diligence - we need users like you who care and do what it takes to stop disruption. I hope you have a great rest of your day and I wish you happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 19:09, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you [Oswah. And you are right. I should have used e-mail instead of posting on-wiki. An oversight by me. Being an administrator myself (on de.wikipedia) I knew about this, but was in a hurry and did not think about it when posting. Sorry again. --Gereon K. (talk) 19:20, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Accidents happen; you didn't mean to be malicious and nobody's perfect - not even admins. :-) Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:31, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Hello User:Martin Urbanec. Thank you for the invitation. I am a Wikipedia administrator for more than 10 years and contribute to Wikimedia projects. This I do for free and without a financial interest. I do not endorse or work for commercial companies for free. Google is a for profit company. I am neither willing to work for Facebook, nor Twitter and Microsoft for free. You ask me to contact you through my Google account. This here is a Wiki and we do have all means of communication here on our Wikis. --Gereon K. (talk) 22:14, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, I might not explained something about Google Code-In correctly. Since it's up to Wikimedia (and other orgs which decided to participate) which tasks should be offered to the students, all the tasks should benefit Wikimedia and our community. Simply put, I don't think it's working for a commercial company, given it's Wikimedia who offers tasks, not Google. You can get a feeling from the last year tasks, see [6]. An example is VisualEditor: Allow editing a table cell by pressing F2, in which a student added a feature to the visual editor. Regarding Google account, I mentioned that for people who would like to become a mentor - that's because the interface for creating tasks has only "login with google account". new formula of the circumference of the ellipse

Dear Sir,

during my free time I like to keep me busy with geometry.

Since already some years I try to develop an elementary formula for the calculation of the circumference of the ellipse.

Hereby I would like to tell you the result of my efforts.

The formula goes:

C = 4 a ((b/a)^bex +1)^ 1/bex for bex=ln (2) / ln (pi/2) = 1.5349285....

or

C= 4b ((a/b)^bex +1)^1/bex which leads to the same result.

Please contact me for further information ( for example the attachements) by my e-Mail becksjuergen@web.de.

The highest deviation of all ratio from a/b of the second formula from Mr. Ramanujan is 0,16%. The highest deviation of my formula is 1,54%, always in comparison to the definite circumference, calculated with the numeric integration of 15 decimal place.

My formula is interesting because it is more fundamental than both formulas and because the deviation is not much more bad.

According to my comparison of my formula with the second formula of Mr. Ramanujan (see attachment) my formula in fact has a higher deviation, but currently there is no more elementary or more compact formula (see excel table in the attachment).

The derivation of the formula also is enclosed.

The formula I have developed with the help of the program GeoGebra. You can find my working-file in the forum of GeoGebra under Geometrie, Kegelschnitte, Ellipse, Materialien Astroidenannäherung (at the end of the side).

To my knowledge mathematical formulas no can’t be copyrighted.

But I imagine that the formula should be publicised in wikipedia.

Unfortunatly but I don`t know how this could be realized.

Certainly this imagination could be realised easier and quicker with your help.

2. The deviation at Ramanujan 1 and Ramanujan 2 corresponds to an astroid.

By using of the same astroid approximation the deviation of Ramanujan was compensated: the second formula of Ramanujan is:

C= pi (a + b) (1 + (3*lamda^2) / (10 + (4 - 3 * lamda ^2)^(1 / 2)))

and has a deviation relatively of max. 0,1609% at a=1,b=0 (see excel-file, forth last column "deviation to Taylor in per cent").

If you expand this formula with my extension

extension = 0.001609349976627(1 - ((2 / ((a / b)^(bex) + 1))^(1/bex))^0.8)²¹ for bex = ln(2) / ln(pi/2) = 1,5349285

the max. deviation of 0,1609 % reduces to 0,0213 % (see excel-file last column, named "new deviation in per cent")

each in relation to the exact numerical integration by Taylor.

As you can see, with my appendix the second formula of Ramanujan is 0,001609/0,000213 = 7 times more exact as the formula

without my extension.

The method, which I have used to create the extension, is the approximation of the astroid, the same method which I have

used to create my formula for calculating the circumference of the ellipse.

In the grafic (Ramanujan 2 with deviation and astroid approximation by Beck.png) it is visible, that the deviation to the

formula of Ramanujan 2 consist in an astroid. My approximation of the astroid formula is:

y= 0.00160934997662698...(1-x^0.8)^21 for x = ((2 / ((a / b)^(bex) + 1))^(1/bex))

(see H_derivation of the approximation of the astroid for the circumference of the ellipse)

Please let me know, what you think about my new formula for calculating the circumference of the ellipse and my extension to

the second formula of Ramanujan.

I know that today the calculation of the circumference of the ellipse is done by numeric integration (computer-programs) and not by using formulas.

My imagination is that my formula should be publicated at the webside of wikipedia but I don`t know how this could be realized.

Thank you very much

Greetings

@Becksjuergen: Hello. Thank you for your elaborations. Wikipedia reports about subjects that had an impact, that are talked about. It cannot publish something with the intention of promotion knew knowledge. Have there been peer reviewed sources that have commented on your findings? Regards, --Gereon K. Btw, I am more interested into calculating the speed of asteroids. For this I use the following formula: 5439.5*((a*(1+sqrt(1-e^2)))/T) --Gereon K. (talk) 10:24, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Becksjuergen: I was thinking about where your findings might be published. You might consider Wikiversity: https://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Wikiversity:Main_Page --Gereon K. (talk) 15:16, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
