Question about Sunday

Thanks for the encouragement! Since I've actually never been to a Wikipedia Day, and have learned about lightening talks only by reading about them on the Internet, I wondered if you could tell me what set-up most presenters use. Powerpoint? I don't have this on my PC but I am willing to buy it if the majority of people use it.--A21sauce (talk) 01:54, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Talk page lurker says, more often it's JPG pictures, which is what I use. PowerPoint has also been used, and some dare to trust the connections to work with live Web pages including Wikipedia pages. Some bring their laptop that can connect to VGA or HDMI; some just have it on a thumb drive or SD card and hope there's a computer that can handle it, connected to the projector. The best-prepared have multiple formats to be ready for whatever may be there. Oh, and I'm not putting on any talk this time. Been ill; been lazy. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:59, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
@A21sauce and Jim.henderson: What Jim says is correct - many people are ready in multiple formats in different ways. Feel better Jim - I hope you are coming.
Personally, when I usually just use Google Slides. It is a way to keep presentations online and access them anywhere with an Internet connection. It is free, except that Google gets your soul, and when using their editor you can also download a powerpoint file for free without buying the software. When you get to events, they always have powerpoint in case you need an offline presentation as backup.
However - for this event, there will be no slides for lightning talks. These are 5-minute slots which cut off on time and the next one starts immediately with no time to change slides between. The first set is to demonstrate the concept. The next set will be watched live by some other Wikipedia Day events in other cities, so we have to move fast to keep them entertained.
When I prepare for these events I write my main talking points then I time myself giving the entire presentation to make sure it is 5 minutes. Sometimes I rehearse it live for someone at the Wikipedia Day event, maybe another presenter, just to be more confident. We have a friendly audience and although the theme is "wiki" in practice the group also coaches attendees to do public speaking and to respond positively to other speakers. Many people just show up and speak, and that is great too. If you have doubts then find me at the event and I would talk with you, time you while you practice one time, or support however you like. An additional possibility -- when doing a session which does allow slides (etc.), is to use a subpage on Wikipedia, see User:DGG/Washington 2015 for an example. That automatically makes it available after the meeting. DGG ( talk ) 18:55, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day

I have applied for a travel micro grant. I have also recropped File:20160330 MCDAAG Josh Jackson and Jarrett Allen crash the offensive boards (1).jpg, which was submitted for exhibition on my behalf. The original file was 3,648 × 5,472 and the original crop that I posted was 1,587 × 2,381. I have recropped this to 1,600 × 2,400 for three reasons:

  1. The shoe brushes the right edge of the frame.
  2. There were stray shoelaces on the bottom pixels of the original crop.
  3. This perfects the 2:3 ration of the original photo (vs the 2:3.0006 ratio of the first crop).

I realize that the exhibition print may have already been completed, but for those looking online, the new crop will be visible. Thanks for including me in the Uncommon from Commons exhibition and helping me achieve my first exhibition selection. screenshare session

Hi Lane: I'd welcome the screenshare session sometime.

But maybe we should wait until after your tutorial at my class next Tuesday -- you may cover some of the same information for everyone.

One of my current students (Wiki vivavariola) seems pretty comfortable editing; another is attempting it for the first time (jes2336) and the others seem to be in between. I'm expecting one of my Mount Sinai physicians to come if his schedule permits, and Felix Richter is going to try to come as well.

3 Tier Logic Article

Hello! My name is Shi, I’m a new user to Wikipedia. :) Before I started engaging with Wikipedia, I didn’t realize how much goes into writing a single article, needless to say I have a new found respect for it. You provided feedback for an article I wrote and I was wondering if you could please answer a couple of my questions.

The article I wrote is called 3 Tier Logic. For my article submission, your comment was to remove citations to press releases, self published sources, and to remove information backed by those sources. I will make sure to do this. One of my questions for you is that once I do this do you think that it has potential for being approved?

If I understand correctly one of the other issues was notability. Regarding this if you could please let me know if you think the company is sufficiently notable I’d appreciate it. Please consider the following information. The company it is a tech startup from Vancouver BC. Its is a small company but they provide services for very large consumer packaged goods companies, such as Doritos, Dr. Pepper, Mars, Kellogg’s ect. more info on their website http://3tierlogic.com/use-cases/) Also they are a public company. As you probably know this means that anyone can buy stocks in the company. In my view I think it would be beneficial for the public to be able to read a summary about this company on Wikipedia. Furthermore, while some of the sources I used were 3tl sources many of them were unaffiliated and very reputable sources such as SeeThruEquity, Seeking Alpha, BC Technology, Business In Vancouver, & VanCity Buzz. (some of those are local newspapers)

Anyway, any feedback you can provide me on how I can get my article approved would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!!!! :)

Since the Projects very first edit 9 december 2002 by User:Dan Koehl, which eventually became the WikiProject Genealogy, different templates were developed, and the portal Portal:Genealogy was founded by User:Michael A. White in 2008. Over the years a number of articles has been written, with more or less association to genealogy. And, very exciting, there is a proposal made on Meta by User:Another Believer to found a new Wikimedia Genealogy Project, read more at Meta; Wikimedia genealogy project where you also can support the creation with your vote, in case you havnt done so already.

Future:

The future of the Genealogy project on the English Wikipedia, and a potential creation of a new Wikimedia Genealogy Project, is something where you can make a an input.

Advice for Revisions on Health Uganda

Hello! I am a student at Rice University and created the Maternal Health in Texas page through Dr. Strassmann's class this semester. I am continuing with Wikipedia editing in another class this semester, and was planning to contribute to the "Health in Uganda" page. I really appreciated your guidance and suggestions on the previous article, so I was hoping you could share your thoughts on my planned revisions for this article as well. In the article, I would like to primarily add to the Health Infrastructure section and create another section on medical conditions. In the Health Infrastructure section, there is no mention of the network of NGOs working alongside the Ugandan government to provide healthcare services. The financing of the healthcare system as well as the healthcare professionals is also rather brief. More importantly, there is no section detailing the illnesses most prevalent in the country, and the approaches to treat them. I would like to create a new section on this topic and also one on mental health. I would like to add to these sections by researching NGOs involved in the area, the financing of the healthcare system, the training of healthcare professionals, and the most common medical illnesses and treatments. I have identified 10-12 scholarly sources that address these conditions in Uganda to guide the revisions. I would be grateful for any suggestions or advice you may have. Thank you! SBanda You had an amazing turnaround with the Maternal Healthcare System in Texas article. If you want to give a go at Health in Uganda or Maternal health in Uganda then feel free - take what skills you learned the first time and do that again.
You are looking at the Wikipedia article and seeing holes now. You are correct on all these points - yes, lots of information is missing, and now I hope when you read anything, on Wikipedia or off, you are just as able to identify what information is not given. The challenge is figuring out through research what information exists at all. You could research any or all of the things you mentioned. Maybe you will find good sources for any of these things, or maybe you would hit a dead end. Whatever you choose, I recommend that you keep a preference for the better quality sources that you find, because it is quicker and easier to share good information starting with better sources than to try to pull good information from sources which are of lower quality for being incomplete, outdated, less authoritative, or whatever else.
I am glad that you are still around. If you have more notes then then share and I will comment on those also. You could pull me to the talk page of any article, which is the best wasy to share notes anyway so that perhaps other people would join to comment.

I will not abuse the article Talk page to editorialize about what you wrote, as you did about what I wrote. I will respond here. As an editor, I work toward NPOV on every article; a reader coming to learn about X should be able to find an NPOV article about X. Nonprofits need to motivate donations and volunteer time so have perhaps have even more of a need for good PR than companies that exist by selling products or services, so thinking about it on the level of human behavior, the abuse of WP by nonprofits for promotion is understandable... but on a conceptual and emotional level it is more sad (and more disgusting) to me when an entity that exists for the public good (or its fans) shit on the public good that is WP. Jytdog Thanks for your reply. It seems that I continually benefit from the reminder that editorializing on wiki talk pages is not useful for advancing the conversation. I confirm that I abused the talk page. Excuse me on that point. I will be more careful in the future.
I also failed to treat promotionalism as seriously as it needed to be taken. Wikipedia is a public good and a friendly pace, but it can only remain friendly when everyone confirms and respects and keeps good boundaries for what is and is not appropriate.
I got the thanks you issued for my deleting so much content. That was a big article change. Despite my misstep, and if it seemed right to you, I still would appreciate your public comment on the article talk page regarding my deletion of so much content. With a change that big for so much content which has been there for so long, it is helpful to note the agreement of multiple users. You did post a problem template, and I did try to address it. Cullman Education and Research Building at the Museum of Modern Art, 4 West 54th Street, on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for an all-day communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. There will be childcare, snacks, multiple trainings and panel discussions. People of all gender identities and expressions welcomed and encouraged to attend.

This year’s edit-a-thon kicks off at 10:00 a.m. with a conversation about information activism with writer Joanne McNeil and Data & Society Research Institute Fellow Zara Rahman, moderated by Kimberly Drew, the social media manager for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, creator of the Tumblr “Black Contemporary Art,” and the person behind @museummammy on Instagram. Sunday March 26: Action=History Wiki-Hackathon @ Ace Hotel

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history.

For this month, and following on the recent Art+Feminism campaign, we'll focus on building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

Tec de Monterrey class project

Hi Blue! Thanks for such a quick response to my student's request. The articles are clearly only in the very early drafting phase, nowhere near ready for the main space. In fact, it is in a subpage off my user page so that I can easily go in and look at what they are doing. The stage they are in now (or should be) is to have all the information on hand and in the major sections, and for tomorrow start grouping that information into what will become paragraphs. Then we will worry about sentence structure then citation format. I asked the students to contact experienced Wikipedians who have an interest in their general topic area to get extra feedback. As Im their teacher, obviously Im primary. But talk pages are a great way to make real the idea that writing is a social activity, and any expertise in the content matter is especially welcome. Tech support for the assessment bot

Hello,

I see you were involved with the page move for the Wikiproject assessments. Thanks for updating the WP1 talk page on that. We have a problem, however. Someone from WP1 used to help maintain the WP 1.0 bot, but they are no longer active, so the assessments aren't being updated properly. Also, the technical page for reporting these problems is Wikipedia talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Index, which is now disconnected from Wikipedia:WikiProject assessment. That page has been the technical "bug reporting" page for assessment for about ten years now so it's familiar to many who are active with WikiProject assessment. We need to

  • Find someone who can look after the bot, and debug it occasionally when it grinds to a halt (which tends to happen perhaps once every year or two).
  • Consider reorganising the relevant pages so that when people want to report problems the information all collects in one place.

Do you have any ideas? I don't have the community connections I once had, so I don't know the best place to get help from. Thanks, Walkerma (talk) 13:23, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your reply! That's certainly given me some ideas, and I may well apply for a grant. It's a difficult situation - similar to the problems we've also had with the main 1.0 project, once a tech-savvy person moves onto something else (though thankfully we have someone new & now active, albeit from outside the community). Someone has also suggested looking at Tool Labs Abandoned tool policy, which I'll try to pursue. Wednesday April 19, 7pm: WikiWednesday Salon and Skill-Share NYC

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Babycastles gallery by 14th Street / Union Square in Manhattan.
