Happy New Year!

A cat to ease all of your troubles
A cat to ease all of your troubles
Happy New Year!
Hey there, Xeno! Happy new Gregorian year. All the best for the new year, both towards you and your family and friends too. I know that I am the only person lonely enough to be running this thing as the new year is ushered in, but meh, what are you going to do. I like to keep my templated messages in a satisfactorily melancholy tone. ;)

Congratulations to Coren, Wizardman, Vassyana, Carcharoth, Jayvdb, Casliber, Risker, Roger Davies, Cool Hand Luke and Rlevse, who were all appointed to the Arbitration Committee after the ArbCom elections. I am sure I am but a voice of many when I say I trust the aforementioned users to improve the committee, each in their own way, as listed within their respective election statements. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to update the 2009 article, heh.

Best wishes, neuro(talk) 01:03, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

 • cheers, you too! –xeno (talk) 13:41, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Help!

There is a problem with a user who keeps leaving rude comments on my talk pages, won't stop. But now he wants to delete them all from my pages to conceal the evidence. I want his comments to stay to show what he said. I have patiently tried using humor with him (by referring to squirrels and calling myself one of the "simple folk"), but nothing works. Also, if you check his history, it seems most of his edits involve edit warring with people all over Wikipedia, and leaving them rude comments. Thus keeping the evidence on my own page could help others with him in the future. Can you keep him from continually and continually editing my pages, or perhaps give him a strong warning or consequence about rude behavior? Thanks!! 206.74.228.186 (talk) 19:08, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

I'll see what I can do but you may need xeno to help on this one, remember that you can see what he has writen from the history of your user page and his contributions page and neither can be deleted. I'll try to give him a warning but he may proberly keep doing it so he may need to be temporary banned. er one thing though who is he and wait pages is he desecrating, that could help. --'The Ninjalemming' 19:18, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
I think this is what hes talking about. John Sloan (view / chat) 19:25, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
 • I gather the AN has provided some resolution? –xeno (talk) 13:41, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

I'll let my edit history and contributions to Wikipedia speak for themselves. I thought we had reached some resolution at the AN, with User:Ad.minster saying what he wanted, but without attribution to me by name or link. However, today he has apparently decided that he is not willing to accept that resolution, and has stepped it up with direct personal attacks. See the AN for more information. Tb (talk) 18:45, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

There's really not much I can do but to suggest you each go your separate ways... –xeno (talk) 18:51, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm happy to do so, but not with personal attacks in place on the page. Since I first deleted my comments from User:Ad.minster's page, my only interaction with him has been to address his complaint at AN, and to attempt to disengage. If he is willing to delete references to me from his page, I would be satisfied. Tb (talk) 18:59, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Hopefully Ad.minster will consider removing the content that troubles you and moving on as well... –xeno (talk) 19:02, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Request for Assistance in Retrieving Deleted Article

Hello, you were recommended to me to possibly assist in retrieving a copy of a deleted article. The article in question is SierraSil and was deleted about a month ago. I am hoping that with sufficient editing, the article can be re-published. Thank you in advance for your help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Seanjpf (talkcontribs) 19:23, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

I'll have to leave this to Adolphus or xeno himself as I can't find the article in question, and there is no reference of it in the deletion log. Sorry. --'The Ninjalemming' 19:23, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Request for Undelete -- Żądło-Dąbrowski z Dąbrówki h. Radwan

I'd like to create a userspace version of a deleted article.

Żądło-Dąbrowski z Dąbrówki h. Radwan

It started out as Radwan Dąbrowski-Żądło Family, which had surmountable problems.

The delete votes piled up on this article, the article was moved to "Żądło-Dąbrowski z Dąbrówki h. Radwan" and was re-written, but it was still linked to the original "Radwan Dąbrowski-Żądło Family".

In Deletion Review, I was told if I want to restore the article, I needed to create a userspace version and then come back to Deletion Review with it.

Would you please undelete in my userspace the article "Żądło-Dąbrowski z Dąbrówki h. Radwan"?

-- Exxess (talk) 07:37, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

As with the above I could not find this article, when was it deleted; if I still can't find it then xeno may have to help. --'The Ninjalemming' 19:25, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the restoration! Much appreciated... -- Exxess (talk) 15:37, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Damn I'm useless, maybe I need to learn more about using the wiki; a lot more. --'The Ninjalemming' 21:44, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
As a user, if you just went to the page in question, i.e. Żądło-Dąbrowski z Dąbrówki h. Radwan, then try to edit it, it will take you to this page which warns you about recreating it and should tell you about its deletion. –xeno (talk) 00:44, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Moving pictures from Wikicommons.

How do I move pictures from wikicommons onto a wikipedia page, I can't manage it and I need to for my funky userboxes. --'The Ninjalemming' 21:46, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Commons images may be called directly from Wikipedia and it will display as if it were on wikipedia's servers. i.e., if the commons pic is called "thing.jpg" you would simply write with whatever paramters you desired. –xeno (talk) 00:41, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
cool, thanks matey --'The Ninjalemming' 17:03, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Whats parameters and how do I srink the picture to fit the box better; they may be the samething though. --'The Ninjalemming' 17:30, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Just say how big you want it in pixels; for example, will get you , while will get you . EVula // talk // // 17:49, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Cheers! you can check it out at User:Ninjalemming/userbox/Banjo-Kazooie, when it's done. --'The Ninjalemming' 21:45, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
Cool, nice work. Now you can categorize it if you like. This one would belong at Wikipedia:Userboxes/Games/Computer and video games/Favorite game. –xeno (talk) 15:19, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
Done that, know just to improve on new ones all of which should be under User:Ninjalemming/userboxen, and you could even put a rating out of ten next to them; I hope to eventually reach five, then I will go for the goal of ten; I think if someone makes one hundred userboxn and at least one person uses each one of them then they should get a barnstar as a kind of reward for their hard work, like a xbox achievement. That would be cool, and I would aim for gold. I have also finished my invisible userbox which is also on this link. --'The Ninjalemming' 20:13, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
Very nice. For me, the satisfaction of designing userboxes is in seeing people using them. (Click "What links here" to see who is transcludig a particular userbox). Oh, and barnstars come when you least expect them =) P.S. EVula is right above you should really use the syntax rather than Image: –xeno (talk) 21:28, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
Got it, they will keep on coming; by the way, do you have to let some one else put on the service awards or can you do it personally (meaning me in the third person). I think this could be one of the longest article titles on wikipedia, I am most proberble wrong though; it is User:Ninjalemming/archives/RandomRants/My strange views on all Deities mixed into one (possible), it leads to one of my archives so there is no need to click on the link. --'The Ninjalemming' 17:00, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
You can award yourself the appropriate level of service award. –xeno (talk) 19:34, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Whats the quickest link to the categories pages so I can catories all my userboxen, and can I set something like a reminder to remind me to do something in the future? if not oh well, and do all the questions I ask annoy you? --'The Ninjalemming' 20:49, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
See WP:UBX#Gallery. Regarding the reminder - not that I know of (on wiki). No, the questions don't annoy me, but my response time may vary =) –xeno (talk) 20:51, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

right to vanish

Hello. I want to exercise my WP:right to vanish--perminantly. The process is a bit confusing; can you tell me the exact steps I need to take to make this happen? Thanks so much. --vanished user 01:31, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

It's pretty much as follows:
 1. Go to WP:CHU and request a name change to a random assortment of characters.
 2. Tag your userpage and any subpages with db-u1, so they can be deleted.
 3. You may wish to add retired to your userpage to display a retired banner.
That pretty much covers it. Useight (talk) 01:38, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
Cheers Useight. Happy trails, vanished user. –xeno (talk) 19:35, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Gamer Barnstar

Hey, Xeno, I was looking at this edit, and it looks like you've found (or already knew) some accurate data that I was looking for earlier. Could you share with me how you learned that this particular barnstar was created on the date that you indicated? I was not able to peg it any more accurately than the month of April, whereas you have an exact date in February. Thanks. Unschool 06:13, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

See the upload date for File:BarnstarCVG.png. cheers, –xeno (talk) 15:20, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
I'm confused. When I go there, I see an upload date of 1 July 2006, not 12 February 2006. What I was basing the date on was this edit, which indicates April of 2006. Now I know that these image files, particularly of barnstars, get upgraded/updated a lot, so I know your 12 February 2006 date may very well be correct, I just don't see it in the history yet. Unschool 19:15, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
You'll have to look at the deleted history of the original file which is now on commons. It says 01:11, 12 February 2006 . . Jacoplane (Talk | contribs | block) 111×107 (12,990 bytes) (CVG Barnstar)xeno (talk) 19:19, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Article Creation for Cashmere Agency

hey xeno, I have been trying to create a page for the Cashmere Agency, formatted much like the page for Frontside Promotions http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frontside_Promotions every time I create it, it is flagged for speedy deletion. All sources have been sited etc. I know you have helped before by creating an article for one of our previous projects Midi Mafia, so is there anyway you can help out with this one?? I can provide all sources etc.

Please let me know!! thanks for the help! Visionarieslyphics (talk) 01:47, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

I don't spend as much time on Wikipedia anymore, but perhaps you could try to present your sources to WP:AFC (articles for creation). –xeno (talk) 02:23, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Re: Firefly series revert

I understand how it could sound like I'm attempting to stifle debate, but in actuality, it would appear that this is something of an attempted palace coup, wherein all of the articles were changed to make the newly created article and omnibus/clearinghouse for all the other Firefly-related articles. There is an AfD discussion occurring here, and I've initiated discussion regarding these actions at the WikiProject here. I think that discussion should have been broached before these large scale changes took place. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 18:34, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Fair enough. The note you left for the wikiproj should generate sufficient traffic for the AFD. –xeno (talk) 18:40, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Userbox question

Hi there. I seriously doubt that you remember it, but you helped me out with a userbox formatting problem some time ago (June 2008). I'm having another problem and I'm wondering if you could take a look and see if you can offer some advice. It's kind of hard to describe, but I think it'll be obvious when you get to my user page. I've looked at it in both IE 7 and Firefox 3.0.5 and it looks essentially the same in both. If the problem doesn't show up when you look at it, let me know and I'll try to describe it.

Thanks in advance for your help. You did a great job last time and I'm confident that you'll do the same again. -- edi (talk) 22:46, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Is it the coffee ubx not obeying and hiding itself? That's just the power of java my friend! –xeno (talk) 22:47, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
Yes, that's the problem. Is there a way to fix it? I like your little pun, by the way. :) -- edi (talk) 23:05, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
Quite weird. Doesn't seem to be the userbox itself (regardless of my epic lulz). Just seems to be too many boxen in that list. Talk page stalkers? –xeno (talk) 23:14, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
Unlike the other userboxes, the coffee one appears to use a template (Userbox) directly. Perhaps if it used raw code or substed or something instead it would nest like the others. Technically illiterate reply from Skomorokh 23:20, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
Hrm, I just tried a non-template one and it still displayed the same. perhaps the div is getting closed in the last userbox or something. I left a message for Thingg, he's good at puzzles like this. –xeno (talk) 23:23, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
You want weird, I'll give you weird. I've been playing with the boxes and it seems the coffee and the Coke vs. Pepsi one won't play nice together. I can put everything else in with that one out and it's fine, pull everything else out and put that one in and the coffee won't hide. Crazy. Just for the sake of curiosity, I'd love to know the reason for it if anyone knows one, but at least the problem is solved. I appreciate everyone's help. You guys are the best. :) -- edi (talk) 23:38, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
There you go, you solved it. There was an unneccessary </div> in the pepsi vs. coke. –xeno (talk) 23:41, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Lateral Link entry Revision

Hi, You have been very helpful with my revisioning efforts with my Lateral Link entry and I think it is very close to passing the inclusion criteria. Would it be possible for you to check the entry out and let me know of any more revisions I should make before putting it back on wikipedia? I am planning to make final revisions in the next few days. My revised entry can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:LegalB123/Lateral_Link.

Much thanks, 96.237.161.249 (talk) 19:01, 14 January 2009 (UTC)LegalB123

It still doesn't make a strong assertion of notability which would help it survive in the mainspace. Also, the citations could be cleaned up to be proper, and also attributed to statements in the article as I explained here: User talk:Xenocidic/Archive 10#Lateral Link entry update. –xeno (talk) 20:53, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
I am not good at this sort of thing on the wiki but if you wanted something, maybe for the key people you could list them not as Key people but as their postitions in the company so say instead of putting Michael Allen, Principal you could put Principal Michael Allen, then underneath Michael's name T.J. Duane; you could also try murging the timeline with the history them fleshing every thing out by using bigger words (it's at times such as these I find a Thesaurus very helpful); you don't have to use them however, just if you needed something else. --'The Ninjalemming' 21:00, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
Actually if you didn't know what I mean then I have put a tiny table in my sandbox here with how you could put it. But you could also condense the references to make it look neater and then add a completely pointless external links section to make the end look more rounded off. Hey I'm actually thinking of quiet abit here, strange. --'The Ninjalemming' 21:06, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you!

I award you this funky thing as a sign of appreciation for helping me with all my

trivial questions, and hope that you continue to be as kind and friendly

re-applying bot edits

This is not trivial, look at the edits on for example [1], some of these were done with previous versions of AWB, the conifgis, if I stil had them would no longer work, driven off lists that not extant any more, and so forth. Rich Farmbrough, 12:13 22 January 2009 (UTC).

That doesn't appear to be one of the edits that was hit in the mass revert, it mostly looked like the run-of-the-mill tag dating that was getting caught in it. –xeno (talk) 13:19, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
The point is that we have no way of knowing without inspecting every single history. Rich Farmbrough, 21:56 22 January 2009 (UTC).

script-assisted date/terms audit

Noted; I wasn't previously aware of the case.

Is there a reason why the the scripts' authors haven't been contacted? I actually only started using Lightmouse's script today, and wouldn't have done so it if it had mentioned the temporary injunction. (If "all editors are instructed not to engage" really does mean "all editors", shouldn't the scripts be disabled - or at least have a clear warning applied - for the duration?) --McGeddon (talk) 13:40, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Did you change your username? Didn't know! Good to see you pop up on my talk, gave me a chuckle. No worries from my end, I'm perfectly calm :-) It takes a lot more than I could ever dish to actually rile up Malleus :-) Happy new year - Keeper | 76 16:43, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

rollback

Hello Xeno, I was reading about Huggle and rollback, and after reading the rollback page, I had a question. How much experience is usually considered appropriate for a user to ask for rollback? I know you can't give an exact "time" or "edit count", I just wondered if you could give a average ballpark estimate. Thank You. Ched (talk) 03:15, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Rollback granted. you look trustworthy enough =) –xeno (talk) 03:26, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Thank You, I'll make sure your trust isn't misplaced. One quick question, it it ok to experiment within my own userspace (ex: User:Ched Davis/test) or would that throw up red flags that would unduly nag the admins? Thank You again ;) .. Ched (talk) 03:34, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
experimenting in your userspace is fine. =) –xeno (talk) 03:40, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Xenobot and op.cit. vs. ibid.

Hey,

cf. this edit. The article still uses op. cit. for a few references, so the ibid template still applies. And I don't see any pertinent discussion on the talk page as the edit summary suggests. --Xover (talk) 09:00, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

This bot is removing ibid templates from articles that still use ibid, op. cit. and/or loc. cit. The edit note refers to a nonexistent "discussion". Please stop this bot from doing this. Roger (talk) 10:31, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
See Wikipedia:AN/I#User:Rich Farmbrough (permlink) the bot removed the template because another bot placed it, in the wrong place, without approval for its task. If you would like to remove the ibid/op/cit, etc. from those articles please see this list of contributions. See also Template talk:Ibid#what?xeno (talk) 14:25, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

How are you ensuring you don;t remove templates placed by humans? Rich Farmbrough, 16:01 24 January 2009 (UTC).

Adventure games

Strangely enough, more adventure games seem to be successful on DS. For example, Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk, etc. Many third party Wii developers have shifted their focus to shovelware ;_; But I shouldn't be talking because I have yet to play Zack and Wiki..--ZXCVBNM [TALK] 00:20, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

BPs

I haven't had an article recreated to my userspace before (at least not that I remember), is there ever a way to get the history too? Or is it always just the last version? The reason I ask is that some of the sources were cut down during the editing process, but for the article I want to work on I want the expanded ones that existed in past version. I'm also interested in the general process and policy issue. I guess saving a desired version of AfD articles in case they are deleted is a good idea? If you could drop me a note in case I miss your reply here I'd appreciate it. Thanks for your help. ChildofMidnight (talk) 06:56, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

We usually leave the history in place - just in case the article gets restored on DRV we don't want the closing admin to have to go searching for it. I've pasted the largest version I could find in the history, does that help? If not is there anything in particular you were looking for? As far as the policy issue, it's a bit of a grey area; you're typically given a wide latitude to keep things in your userspace as long as you're working on it. If you are able to bring the article to an inclusion-worthy state then the history will need to be restored for GFDL-attribution. –xeno (talk) 13:26, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Hi. I just wanted to note that I've done a history merge there for GFDL concerns per WP:USERFY (seemed easier than pasting the history of the article!). But if DRV overturns the article, it will be easily found as I left a clear trail. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:52, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
sounds good, thanks for the note. i'll keep that in mind for the future. –xeno (talk) 17:15, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

I seperated and slightly modified the article into two new ones. I see now (someone let me know) that it was under DRV discussion so I suppose I may have mucked things up a bit. If you want to see the new articles they are Black presidential candidates in the United States and Black president in popular culture of the United States and the DRV here Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2009 January 26#Black President (United States). Thanks both of you for your help. Stay out of trouble. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 08:07, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Random hidden page and other stuff

I had a few minutes free (again) so decided to make a hidden page link system thingy, if you want to try it go to this page and follow the instructions on it, it may take a while to find the hidden page. By the way I am startig to edit mainspace as I am trying to update the Tom Clancy's Endwar article. --'The Ninjalemming' 13:08, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Stuff like this absent of mainspace contributions is likely to get you blocked per WP:MYSPACE/WP:NOTWEBHOSTxeno (talk) 19:44, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
I don't understand what you mean by this, if you mean the hidden page thing it was only meant to be fun and to earn this barnstar, as for the Endwar thing I am stilll writing it here. If you meant something else please say. "Wimper" --'The Ninjalemming' 17:36, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
In a nutshell, you're spending too much time worrying about barnstars and your userpages, and not enough time contributing to the encyclopedia. –xeno (talk) 17:52, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
Got it I'll mainly continue with helping the Xbox project stuff for now, could you check this though and see what you think of it. Thanks. --'The Ninjalemming' 18:04, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
It looks pretty good. You should insert it into the article so others can tweak it and help with the copyediting and expansion. –xeno (talk) 18:17, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
Cool thanks, think I will add it on when I have finished the intial version, by the way do you have any info on the differences in campaigns in Endwar, such as the cutscenes at the end, I know Europes but I can't remember it word for word but I doubt I would have to put it in 'perfectly' for the article as that is just not what you do; probably. If you do have some info can you please put it on my sandbox. Cheers --'The Ninjalemming' 17:02, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure I know how those will turn out. The former would be overrun by players (you can see what roux is doing on AN), and the latter is an all-or-nothing discussion, where I'm expressing an issue with one aspect. --NE2 18:16, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
well you've yet to provide any diffs or garner any support for your hypothetical concern. maybe just leave it alone? –xeno (talk) 18:18, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
When the first to respond are players (as has happened even on AN), it's kind of hard to get outside eyes. (I did provide a diff, by the way.) --NE2 18:20, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
Still not an WP:AN issue, imo. You're at 3r's on the AN page, by the way. –xeno (talk) 18:24, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Reversion of banned user

Thank you for this. I would have done that myself, so you saved me the work. However, I prefer to have such messages on my page until I read them. Related to my principle PINOT, I just take this as a (badly written) message. I believe that information empowers us, as long as we're free to deal with it in a way we choose. In this case, I was actually happy about the message, because I saw that the situation had been well taken care of.

A different case would be vandalism that deletes or distorts information that is already on a page. Maybe I should write a note to clarify that on top of my talk page. Do you think that might help? — Sebastian 19:28, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Apologies, I was reverting from the user's contribs (and per the ban policy) and did not see your talk page preferences. In this case, a message at the top of your talk page would not have helped since I would not have seen it. I'll keep this in mind for future quasi-vandalism on your talk page. –xeno (talk) 19:33, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
Please don't apologize. You're right, that's what the policy says, and I don't want you to have any remorse about following it. I wish there were more people who saw bad messages the way I do; maybe we could form a group. But I can't think of a way that would make it easy to see for reverters. Dang! — Sebastian 19:43, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
well you as you can see, I don't really care too much about vandalism either... it amuses me =). anyhow, happy editing. –xeno (talk) 19:49, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, some are too funny! Too bad we don't have WP:BJAODN anymore! — Sebastian 22:07, 27 January 2009 (UTC)    (I stopped watching this page as of 18:33, 28 January 2009 (UTC). If you would like to continue the talk, please do so here and let me know.)

Keepscases made a good point in this thread: "You'll also notice that my talk page is filled with messages from established users who appreciate my questions". Among people who are still left on Wikipedia, you made one of the 4 supporting comments on Keepscases' talk page (although it was mild: "sometimes helpful, do try to tone it down"). Is that still your opinion after reading the other messages on Keep's talk page and in the link above, and if so, would you like to argue this position in the current conversation? (Watchlisting) - Dan Dank55 (send/receive) 22:43, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

I wouldn't put myself on the supportive side, quite the opposite, I was on the "threatening to block for disruption" side. Other users later convinced me to relax my position. See User talk:Xeno/Archive 6#MFC RfA and its subthreads for more on this. –xeno (talk) 22:52, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Ender

Locke and Demo was indeed the B plot of Ender's Game, the information is probably buried in one of the ender/OSC list articles somewhere. Doubt they showed back up much in the Shadow series, but I stopped at Shadow Puppets I think - maybe Shadow of the Giant. Wish I had stopped at Speaker for the Dead in the main quartet - ye gods Children of the Mind was terrible.--Tznkai (talk) 22:46, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

If I had a quarter for every time I heard that complaint.......... =) well thanks for confirming I'm not losing my memory. maybe I'll try to work it back in there. –xeno (talk) 22:53, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
I won't say I thought all the books were great, but I have read them all... Even the most recent one was not bad, although it had some continuity issues. I think OSC is one of those guys who had a great idea for a book or couple of books, but ended up being forced to write 10 books instead because he had to eat and finance his publishers yacht. P.S.: How long ago did the xeno/xenocidic thing change? Seem to recall reading about the change a long time ago, but today it struck me as newly incongruous. Avruch T 23:37, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
It went thru about a week ago You probably remember the RFA or post-RFA hullabuloo. And I know what you mean about OSC getting "typecast" into writing 'em. I haven't read the latest in the Shadow series nor the "direct sequel"... Gotta get caught up. I'm also told his Worthing books are good too. –xeno (talk) 23:40, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
I recognized the reference, but it's embarrassing that my knowledge of them is limited to Ender's Game and Lost. There's a plot summary at Talk:Ender's Game#Plot Summary that mentions the siblings' political maneuvering. I think it's okay to mention their lengthy preparation in the context of the ultimate results: combining their influence, Peter takes over Earth; Valentine and Ender leave Earth to escape him. I liked Enchantment (plot summary spoiler warning). Flatscan (talk) 04:41, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Bad bank

Hi Xeno,

I noticed that you preemptively redirected Bad bank to the Mortgage asset purchases section Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. I was thinking of creating the Bad bank article as its own feature, but wanted to check with your reasoning. No rush, and I won't touch it until I hear from you. Thanks. Hiberniantears (talk) 18:57, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

That was a temporary measure. Please go ahead and create the article, I think this page will get a lot of incoming hits with that term being thrown about. Swedish banking rescue would be a good "See also" or "examples of bad bank implementations"... Best of luck! –xeno (talk) 18:59, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
I figured that was the case. Thanks for the link too, I'm in search of a good model. Hiberniantears (talk) 19:30, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Xbox 360 Unprotection

Xeno, look at what went on when you unprotected the 360's page... I don't really know how to revert to previous versions, and I may well screw up the article by trying to so; could you do us a favour and 1) Revert to your last edit 2) Protect the article again

Hi xeno, just a quick note to say that on the article in question someone has put a table on that they want be cleaned up abit. I thought that with your experience you may be able to do it, it looks a bit to complicated for me for now, I am still doing the Endwar thing and am going to put the first version on the actual article soon so other people can change it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ninjalemming (talkcontribs) 18:53, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Wheel warring

You're coming dangerously close to wheel warring with admins. First you decide that your judgment overrides that of another admin (me) and you unilaterally overturn a deletion I made without consulting me (or anyone else). Then you decide that your judgment overrides that of another admin and you decide that it's appropriate to move things how you see fit.

You need to stop immediately. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:28, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

So you're the only one allowed to be bold? –xeno (talk) 19:29, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Bold? No, no. This is verging on the latter clause, recklessness. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:31, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Would you recommend DRV or a new MFD as the next course of action? –xeno (talk) 19:32, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
MFD. Though it might be a good idea to read the essay and take its message to heart, first. --MZMcBride (talk) 19:34, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Feel free to swing by whenever you feel like slinging more personal attacks or complaining about me overturning your "wildly inappropriate" unilateral decisions. (pot/kettle? =) –xeno (talk) 19:36, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
Hey, you too! Deletion discussions are essential until the result isn't what you wanted. ;-) --MZMcBride (talk) 19:40, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
well I wasn't present for the first one... but honestly, this "essay" is nothing short of a personal attack (i saw a user using it in such a way today)... you should know better. and I guess now we're even, we've each "thrown common sense to the wind" in favour of needless bureaucracy ;> –xeno (talk) 19:47, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Portal:Xbox 360

I am looking to change the name of Portal:Xbox 360 to Portal:Xbox. Do you think it would be better calling Portal:Xbox or follow PlayStation and call it Portal:Mircosoft Xbox? BW21.--BlackWatch21 16:19, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

I would say Portal:Xbox, mainly as most people know Xbox is made by Microsoft, and if they didn't they would just have to check it out; as they probably don't know what an Xbox is. Any why both Portal:Xbox 360 and Portal:Microsoft Xbox are both a bit long winded I think, Portal:Xbox would be much easier. Now to help me I am going to go and find out what a Portal is. --'The Ninjalemming' 18:39, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I've been doing a lot of NPP lately and that came up as a single sentence with, as I recall, a dead link. It wasn't much more than a placeholder for the link, but I've spoken to the contributor. Seems he likes working in really small increments. Who knew? Thanks for the note. I appreciate it when someone points out a gaffe on my part. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 22:47, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Thank you!

Thank you for posting a message on the page of the user who deleted the Titanoboa article that I created just two minutes after I created it. Also, I wanted to let you know that after I recreated the same article, it is currently listed on wikpedia's main page as a news item. Apparently, you're not the only person who thought it was a worthy article! Grundle2600 (talk) 23:08, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

yea, who wouldn't want to read about a ZOMG GIANT SNAKE?!?! I wonder if that picture can be FUR'd... –xeno (talk) 23:18, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Another thank you thing

Sorry I haven't had time to create a new funky thing like I did last time but I wanted to thank you any way as you have given me Two Barnstars in a quiet short period of time. So thanks! I am trying to bother you less and most of the things I put on your user page you will probably not have to answer. --'The Ninjalemming' 17:26, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

hehe... no problem... and - if your question has to do with improving the encyclopedia, I don't mind answering... =) –xeno (talk) 17:29, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Vandal

Hi Xeno! Could you take a look at this persistent vandal's talk page and see if an Anon block would be appropriate please, the user last block of 3 hours following a 30 day block is somewhat lame in view of the editors history! See:- User_talk:195.137.57.61. Many thanks. :) Richard Harvey (talk) 18:16, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Normally I would decline to block a vandal that wasn't active at the time of the request, but since it's persistent, and a static IP, I've blocked for 3 months. cheers, –xeno (talk) 18:19, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

The injunction

Would it be acceptable to delink the dates if consensus were reached among the editors on an article's talk page? Thank you,
⋙–Berean–Hunter—► ((⊕)) 19:28, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

That probably wouldn't violate the injunction because it's not a "program of mass linking or delinking" - it's a single case with local consensus. –xeno (talk) 19:30, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
Thank you very much.

Rant

AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH, I am doing some work and I can't find the Relative Formula Mass or Boiling point for Propanol or Butanol. Naturaly i checked on the Wiki first but I couldn't find it there then I looked on google and THERE IS NOTHING ON IT, as you are a genius could you help me; to be honest I don't even know why I put this on here you probably won't be able to help me, but if you can please do. By the way the plural of genius is genei (the spelling is wrong though). --'The Ninjalemming' 19:41, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Try asking at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Science. A science genius, I am not. –xeno (talk) 19:45, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
Didn't work. This is going to take AGES. Sigh. --'The Ninjalemming' 20:03, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
but you didn't ask? –xeno (talk) 20:05, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
I thought I did, didn't I do it right; I'll try it again and see, if I epic fail it again could you ask it What are the chemical properties of Butanol and Propanol. I suck! --'The Ninjalemming' 20:14, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
 • ah, don't bother I found it, thanks for the help but I did read at the bottom the answer may take several days and I need this done by tomorrow. Cheers :) --'The Ninjalemming' 20:26, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
Just click here and type your question. –xeno (talk) 20:26, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
Actually I could thank you and here is how, hoping you are well and continue to make many more brilliant contributions to Wikipedia; and thank you for being extremely nice to this challanging person and keeping cool during all their, some times odd, questions.

Dynamic IP

Just as a general query (at the momement ;)) If you have a persistent vandal using Dynamic IP's for vandalism only, that are all in the same range and registered to the same netname, is it possible to block the entire range to prevent the vandal from editing? Richard Harvey (talk) 18:39, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Yes - depending on how much collateral damage it would cause. Normally a checkuser would be contacted to determine this and apply teh block. I've never done a rangeblock myself, but I could point you in the right direction if you felt it necessary. –xeno (talk) 19:08, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Help with deletion review

Hi Xeno, I see you maintain articles on video games. Can you help with an article on the developer Funkitron that keeps on getting deleted. It is notable in the video game world, and has references, but keeps on getting quick deleted because of a bad first article that was posted. Other authors have tried to correct, to no avail. If you could review, use your knowledge of the video game world (it is the casual business), and chime in, that would be appreciated.

Deletion review is here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2009_February_6#6_February_2009

Dave635 (talk) 14:32, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your thoughts on the topic. I think it was fair discussion and I've learned a lot about Wikipedia from following it. Very interesting. Anyway, what are the next steps in something like this? How is a decision/action finally made? Dave635 (talk) 14:00, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
From the looks of things it's going to stay deleted, but if you like I can userfy a copy of the article that you can work on in your userspace in relative peace and quiet. Finding more reliable sources and ensuring the article can pass WP:CORP would be your next step. –xeno (talk) 14:04, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
Okay, can you userfy back to the author that created the most current version? And question, if it gets reposted, how do you signal that it is a revised article so it doesn't get quick deleted? Dave635 (talk) 18:12, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
I can userfy it to whoever wants it in their userspace, I wouldn't put it in someone else's userspace it unless they asked me to. If and when you improve it enough to repost it, perhaps just leaving a note on the talk page or a hidden note like this:
<!-- Hidden note goes here -->
Let me know if you need anything further. Once the DRV closes. if it doesn't get restored I can userfy it to you or whomever else upon request. –xeno (talk) 18:18, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Don't be a whiny bitch

Please reconsider your userfication of Wikipedia:Don't be a whiny bitch to User:MZMcBride/Don't be a whiny bitch. The article had survived a previous AfD, and the results of the last one was no consensus leaning towards keep, so you should have erred on the side of the previous keep of the AfD. I edited it at one point, was part of the first AfD as keep, and was not aware it was up for AfD again - so my voice would have been the one to lean for keep.--Cerejota (talk) 09:24, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

The author userfy'd it himself. –xeno (talk) 13:59, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Yes, thank you. (Embarrassed blush)

Thank you for the reversion. I have just spent ten minutes trying to work out what happened, and the only thing I can come up with is that I *somehow* hit the rollback link for Toddst's edit, while I flicked through my own watchlist; ANI is on my watchlist at the moment, so it is conceivable. Shall drop a note on Toddst's page to that effect and then slink off in embarrassment :). FlowerpotmaN·(t) 17:11, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Don't sweat it, I had a similar misclick a few days ago. It has to do with rollback being in the watchlist now, much easier to errantly click. –xeno (talk) 17:14, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Clarification

Give this a read (it's the section where I requested the injunction), specifically the arbitrators response to NuclearWarfare. I'm not sure if delinking slowly would fall under this injunction, but let me know if you still think we should seek clarification. Don't forget about WP:AN/AE, you could open a discussion there and that might get you a third opinion. —Locke Coletc 19:19, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

That's what I was thinking, but figured I'd let you consider it yourself. I'd obviously prefer it stopped, but at that low of an edit rate it probably doesn't have to. —Locke Coletc 19:56, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

De-linking dates

Thanks for your two messages - I must admit that I thought that what I was doing was not in breach of the "injunction" as I generally only de-link dates where there is inconsistency within an article between two or more date formats, although this is not always the case. I will try to be a little less zealous in future. Best wishes. Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 20:29, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Well apparently the rate at which you were delinking the articles does not violate the injunction, but just be cautious. –xeno (talk) 20:30, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

So how do we do this?

I don't mind rolling back the history, but I don't want the coordinated hits visible if possible. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 23:54, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

 • Got it. I'd forgotten about that function. I'll do it right now. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 23:58, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, the thought had occured to me. This explains why I never used a talk page bot before...! Same problem.  :) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 00:02, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Oops. Darn system. Thanks for the help. I've never done this before. Some admin, huh?  :)) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 00:05, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

WSIB

I don't like to undo stuff unilaterally when there's a logical edit summary, so I wanted to quickly drop by and see if you'd mind my recreating the dab page at this address?

I think the missing ingredient is that the link around the city of license for the radio station got removed (by me, I believe), leaving that line with no blue on it. I'd agree that it can ultimately be handled with a hatnote, and best with a link to the government agency on top of the radio station article once it's created - it's a primary identifier for the radio station, but secondary for the agency.

Anyway, my rationale for keeping the dab page right now is that the radio station article will be created — crystal ballish, I know, but they're a very active project. In fact, I could probably drop a note with a couple of the project members and have at least a stub up at that address within half an hour if it were necessary. Once it is created, the hatnote can be added and the dab page deleted, but the 'lazy' incoming links need a home for right now. They'll be a lot harder to find if it's left as a redirect.

Thoughts? Mlaffs (talk) 05:41, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Well there really shouldn't be links to disambiguation pages in the first place, if you want to red-link to the radio station in anticipation of its creation you should link to its eventual location (i.e. WSIB (FM)). As far as where the WSIB redirect should go, typically it should go to the most common usage (Googling "WSIB ontario" gives 135,000 out of 300,000 hits for "WSIB" while "WSIB Tennessee" gives only 19,900 and "WSIB Selmer" only 891 - so on this cursory look the more common usage seems to be as an acronym for Workplace Safety & Insurance Board). If it can't be determined, the page could remain as a disambiguation page. Thanks for the note. –xeno (talk) 13:28, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Sorry — probably wasn't clear, but that's exactly what I meant. I hate incoming dab page links with a passion, and cleaning those is actually my primary area of focus. With a dab page, the incoming links can be cleaned to the correct location, whereas links to the radio station placed by the average editor would end up getting hidden as incoming to the agency the way it's set up now. Sounds like you're not opposed to me rolling it back, so I'll do that when I get a second later today. I'll also copy this discussion to the talk page so that there's some record that the idea of what's primary usage has been considered. Thanks! Mlaffs (talk) 14:13, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Well, since the radio station is still a redlink, imo the best way to handle this would be with a hatnote at the top of the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board. –xeno (talk) 14:19, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Re: eh

Essentially, yes. Thanks. =) Powers T 12:58, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

There is a discussing going on on the Resi 5 tak page about the 'racism' section if you want to add your input; mine is already on there. Better do it quick though as many people (meaning three) are in favor of getting rid of the section while I am the only one to say keep it, so it might go soon. --'The Ninjalemming' 19:54, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

I have no opinion on this particular matter. –xeno (talk) 18:09, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Nuts! I know you may not still have a particular opinion, but should you remove part of an article if it is still part of the subject's history (the subject being Res 5) and is still an important bit of information? Sorry for the length of thisconvosation that you most probably don't care about. --'The Ninjalemming' 19:04, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
I would say this situation is somewhat analagous to the Alien sideboob controversy... The commentator was right to point to WP:UNDUE, as the section does seem to be presently taking up a lot of space in the relatively short article. –xeno (talk) 19:12, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Shorten it considerably then. Got it! I'll say they should Definatlydo that then and I'll try to do it as well. --'The Ninjalemming' 19:38, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Minnesota State Law Library - possible copyright infringement

I created the page/article for Wikipedia entitles "Minnesota State Law Library". My position at the library is Head of Technical Services here is the link to my photo and bio from our website [1]. So the person that should give permission to use anything from our website is myself. What do I need to do further to have our article on the library show on Wikipedia? Please advise and I will do what is required. You may also contact me at my email address at the Minnesota State Law Library: (removed) (Sebastiaan69 (talk) 17:40, 12 February 2009 (UTC))

Well the main issue is that the bulk of the article is copied and pasted from the website, which I'm not sure is copyrighted or public domain or somewhere in between. If your giving permission to use the information though, I guess it should be ok (follow the instructons I left on your talk page regarding emailing the Wikimedia Foundation to authorize the use). The article still needs a lot of work to comply with WP guidelines, but that's a separate issue. best, –xeno (talk) 17:44, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Ok

And what exactly is my behavior? Take a look at the history and the discussion before you start putting it soley on me as if I'm the only one involved. The core issue is whether a FAQ should be a policy. Dreadstar 18:38, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

The "core issue" has no place on ANI, I believe the thread was brought for your (alleged) edit warring over the core issue. –xeno (talk) 18:41, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
Then file a WP:3RR report on me. And review the history before placing the blame on just me. Dreadstar 18:46, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

hehe, that's all I can think of other than like, newsletter delivery bots (if you wanted the WP:SIGNPOST delivered to your page, for example). if you're interested, you might look into AutoWikiBrowser which is like a bot you control to fix article issues such as typos, links to disambiguation pages, etc. Very powerful tool. –xeno (talk) 14:20, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Requesting 5 articles which were deleted

Pretty please, I only have 11 more articles, then I am done with the hardest stage of this research: compiling the deleted data.

I am requesting 6 articles which were deleted then redirected to be userfied, :):

From: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2008 November 15

Can you please move all 6 pages to my userspace, with the history intact (I am interested in who created the article, and when).

I really appreciate it. You are probably wondering why I ask. Well, I have spent my weekend on a graph found here: User:Ikip/AfD on average day. I am interested in what type of user gets their page deleted, etc....November 15 is just a day pulled out of a hat by another user.

Thanks :) Ikip (talk) 02:29, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

I guess I asked for it, right? ;> The first two were closd as keep/no consensus (respectively).  Doing... on the history splits/userfication... –xeno (talk) 02:44, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Kewl, now you will have plenty of work as an admin when other editors come to you to userfy and email articles :) After months, now I am finished up! THANKS
Thanks also for the kewl little Doing template idea. You get barnstar out of this, BTW. Ikip (talk) 02:54, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
No problem, and this is  Done (I believe), let me know if I missed anything. Good luck on your research. –xeno (talk) 02:57, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
You missed the first two,
 1. Energy and American Society to User:ikip/Energy and American Society
 2. Anaconda 4: Trail of Blood to User:ikip/Anaconda 4: Trail of Blood
I can clean up the articles after you userfy them, making no wiki of all categories, removing afd tag, etc. Thank you so much! Ikip (talk) 03:11, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
I think maybe you had a typo or two in your dataset -
 1. Energy and American Society (was closed as keep)
 2. Anaconda 4: Trail of Blood (was closed as no consensus)
...so the full history resides at the article's new home and can't be split/userfied. Again, good luck! –xeno (talk) 03:14, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Ouch, research editors don't work for free. Thank you! Ikip (talk) 03:21, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Is there anyone here good with graphics who might be able to recolour File:Leaf.png to a shade of blue similar to File:Fringe leaf.jpg? N.B. This isn't that important. It's for a userbox. But I'd appreciate it =) –xeno (talk) 18:49, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Well I'm not good with graphics but my girlfriend is, maybe I can get her to do it. I don't know if she's that good, but she's an animator and computer programmer, so I'll see what she can do, we'll be even for all that you've done for me. Cheerio!--Ezekiel 7:19 †alk 19:31, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Cool...thanks. =) –xeno (talk) 19:36, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Wait do you have an E-mail. Maybe if it works I can have her send it to you when it's done. Now I'm not positive if she can do it yet, so don't rely on me too much. See who else can do it as well, keep your options open.--Ezekiel 7:19 †alk 19:40, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Sure, it's xenowiki (at) gmail (dot) com. But you or her could also just upload it to the commons under GFDL if you like. –xeno (talk) 19:46, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Yeah the only thing is that I'm leaving for Philly in two hours so I won't have access to a computer till Tuesday at the latest so i want to give her the info to contact you so you'll get it first. That way you don't have to wait so long.--Ezekiel 7:19 †alk 19:54, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Sure thing... =) Have a safe trip. –xeno (talk) 19:58, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Hey thanks, I really just don't want to teach her how to do these things (especially in 2 hours) so I just mailed her your e-mail so if it turns out well she'll send it to you. See you later, I'm out. Cheerio!--Ezekiel 7:19 †alk 20:01, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Did you get anywhere with the blue leaf ? will take me about 10 mins if you still need it --Chaosdruid (talk) 23:47, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
I don't think Ezekiel's gf got around to it, so if you could, that would be awesome! =) Upload it to the commons or email it to the above address. Thanks =) –xeno (talk) 23:58, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
Sry - commons keeps messing up the GDFL licence so its taken me 20 mins to do the upload so far due to derivativeFX cocking up lol - be with you in 10 I hope --Chaosdruid (talk) 00:32, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Newcomer help page

I am considering doing a help page for new people, who need practise editing; by making a new page (possibly under User:Ninjalemming/New user/help) and giving them random information (about anything, even if it is untrue, this is just practise) that they can put in and practise their writing skills. Obversile this will take some time to start, but what do you think about this, is it a good idea or not? (remember I hought of this first) --'The Ninjalemming' 14:10, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Sounds like something that would be conducted under the auspices of adopt-a-user. –xeno (talk) 15:33, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
Does that mean I can't do it? --'The Ninjalemming' 16:19, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
Why dont you read up on the adopt-a-user project and decide if you're ready for that. –xeno (talk) 18:15, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
Don't think I am able to properly adopt-a-user yet; maybe in a couple of months; or five. But I will do this page (as an example mind) and give it to the 'Adopt-a-user people' to use if they so wish. It may take me a few days but I will show you so you can judge it, arn't you the lucky person! (or not) ;P --'The Ninjalemming' 18:22, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
I have finished the first draft of the New comer help page thingy, can you judge it so I can propose it to the Adopt-a-user group, please. Cheers also! --'The Ninjalemming' 15:02, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

New comer help page thing.2

Just incase you didn't receive my last thing I decided to put it here also. Can you please check this page and see wheather it is up to your satisfaction before I propose it the Adopt-a-user group. Thank you! 'The Ninjalemming' —Preceding undated comment was added on 14:23, 19 February 2009 (UTC).

so the newcomer is supposed to take what you wrote and improve upon it? –xeno (talk) 14:28, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
Hurm, actually that could be part of it, but before you said that they were only meant to put on of the templates I am going to make (as I am not done yet), and put it on the pages talk page; then I/some one would give them some info (even if it is completely made up, which it proably will be) so they could put it on. It says at the beginning remember? But I will ow also put on somethings for them to improve on some ow. 'The Ninjalemming' 14:32, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
I guess I just don't understand what you're planning on doing with it. I also think it's best if newcomers just go out into the mainspace and get their feet wet (i.e. as instructed at User:Xeno/wikiadopt#Cleanup patrol). (And I think you should be spending more time getting acquainted with editing the wiki yourself, before trying to help newcomers. Your addition to EndWar at the beginning of the month was great, but since then you've made a grand total of 2 edits to the mainspace). –xeno (talk) 15:22, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
"Cough" "cough" yeah "cough", I know I should but I can't find anything that hasn't been written that I don't know, there may be stuff that I know but can't find so can you give me some thing to do. I will keep the help thing on hold for several mounths before proposing it and just edit mainspace. By the way can you use books as references, if you can I maybe able to edit more. 'The Ninjalemming' 16:07, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
Yes, you can use books as references. See cite book. You don't need to write new stuff, you could just improve grammar on old stuff, etc. See the lesson I linked above to find articles needing work. –xeno (talk) 16:15, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
It didn't work citng the book, I have put my attemp under my sandbox, can you please check it out and see what has gone wrong; sorry for troubling you. 'The Ninjalemming' 17:09, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
Cheer xeno, that was very helpful. Why didn't you stand for stewardship? you could easily do it. :) 'The Ninjalemming' 17:49, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Please help

Hello xeno i was wondering if you can help me out because i dont think this circumstance needs a user check or would be accepted. I believe i'm dealing with three sock puppets within the Olive skin article previously i edit warred with this user User:Novelaconto over a poorly re written section by him not in toe with the sources provided ,i myself unfortanately got so fraustrated with one of his possible sock accounts that i used my secondary account for sock purposes and he reported me for sock puppetry. So i was blocked for one week but decided to take a wiki break for over a month,so i started to edit again but stayed away from that article as per i did not want no problems but i came across some sources to which i wanted to add another picture of somebody with olive skin so i did though i did leave the part of the article alone that i was blocked for trying to avoid the 3rr and i added a source and pic of a person who happends to be from england who has olive skin but no sooner a day later some newly created account came and changed the picture from the one i added and than added another pic and added person of enlgish descend with olive skin from sun tanning when none of the sources say that so i reverted it once and added back the pic and the previous heading under the picture and added another source but he than changed it back again so i decided to get some admin assistance, now why i suspect that this three accounts are all the same person User:Novelaconto User:Dingdongacid User_Talk:Obahliskh. Now i susupect socks because all these accounts basicaly make controversial disruptive edits and disapear in other words if you check there history their accounts make edits for olive skin and barely anything else and some how always seem to clash with my edits in other words just being disrutpive and pov pushing under different accounts to avoid some sort of reputation ,if you check the talk page for olive skin i do have a history of trying to work out differences with other editors on this article and other established editors as well as some admins have agreed with my edits to the article if you could take the time out to investigate the matter for me there seems to be a pattern of people creating accounts just to duke it out on the olive skin article--Wikiscribe (talk) 18:33, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

If you suspect sockpuppetry the besy thing to do would be to file a report at WP:SPI. –xeno (talk) 18:43, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

i made a case yesterday xeno can you have a look at this case for me this is my first time doing this i dont know if i did it right because no admin has commented on the case yet i dont know whether it needs a user check or what Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Dingdongacid--Wikiscribe (talk) 17:21, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

i'm not too familiar with it either (it's a new process compared to the old one) but it looks ok to me. SPI is usually fairly backlogged so just give it some time now. –xeno (talk) 17:31, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Underground economy

Why have you protected this page (Underground economy)? It doesn't seem to have been vandalized.

SimonTrew (talk) 06:57, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

I actually unprotected it (leaving move protection in place, if consensus finds for a rename, let me know), prior to that it was indefinitely semi-protected (as was Nawlin's past procedure after some page move vandalism). See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&page=Underground_economyxeno (talk) 13:29, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
OK I must have misunderstood the automatic wikipedia comment. It's not a bad article, needs a bit of tidying I think, i've done a bit, you a lot more, but does not seem to be getting vandalised. Personally I would have to toss a coin over 'Black Market' vs 'Underground Economy', would have trouble deciding. I have a reproduction pamphlet here from RAF Duxord (Imperial War Museum) which includes a section on the spivs, would that be at all helpful? —Preceding unsigned comment added by SimonTrew (talkcontribs) 15:18, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
The be honest, I don't know much at all about the article. I just unprotected it to let anons and new users edit it. Have at it =) –xeno (talk) 15:20, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
OK I do know and with a fair wind could probably become the kinda leading editor of this article. My mum currently is borrowing the pamphlet about spivs in WWII but I will get it back soon. So with your permission I will make a few more drastic-- but not vandalistic-- edits. I am just getting used to big edits, before done mostly just subbing, so I get tied up sometimes just with the technicalities (a bit stupid for a computer programmer really). I will get there, but a bit of guidance in the right direction will be more than welcome. SimonTrew (talk) 15:24, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
hehe, you don't need my permission to edit the article, and don't worry about messing things up because everything can be undone or fixed. Feel free to let me know if you have any specific questions about how to go about working on the article. Happy editing, –xeno (talk) 17:34, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
Xeno you said I could ask you for specific help. I don't want to spam you but have trouble finding this, and have searched. I created a new article (My first!) and checked all the guidelines, it is very sketchy at the moment, I made the links first but didn't realise the article title must be the same as the page name. Is there a way to change the displayed title? There's only two link so it is not life-threatening but I am gonna incorporate more, so would be handy to know before I continue with it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SimonTrew (talkcontribs) 05:46, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Custom UBs

Excuse me, but I was wondering if you knew how to create custom Userboxes? Veraladeramanera (talk) 01:41, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Custom, as in you want to create your own? The easiest way is to find a userbox you like the style of and change the code to suit your needs. To create a userbox just make a subpage of your userspace, i.e. User:Veraladeramanera/Userbox. –xeno (talk) 01:49, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Iberian-Guanche Inscriptions

Dear Xeno, Please, put this page back since there is still much to discuss, before removal of FACTUAL DATA. Thank you --Askatu (talk) 16:28, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

The article was deleted per Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Iberian-Guanche_inscriptions. You'll need to open a discussion at WP:DRV. I can WP:USERFY it if you want, you'll need to address the concerns raised at the AFD before you put it back into the mainspace. –xeno (talk) 16:31, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
Hey - I closed that one...why are you being hassled? Anyway, I'll take a look at how to slice up the semi-protection stuff tomorrow. Fritzpoll (talk) 17:41, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Watchlist

I saw something you posted about another watchlist (one of the admin boards, the thread that's so hot with delete and block all the kids who have hidden/secret/guestbook pages) anyway, Is there a way to have multiple watchlists? Maybe one for users, one for articles, one for WP policy and such? Or is that maybe an admin only thing? — Ched (talk) 20:31, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

If you create a page of links containing the "separate watchlist" you want, then you can click "related changes" while looking at the page. Example: User:Xeno/unprotects and related changes (i've hidden logged in users). Let me know if you need further guidance on this. –xeno (talk) 20:34, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

From what I see at the talkpage, am I to assume we're letting him/her/them stick around as long as they rename?? GJC 18:29, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Yea, I took their positive contributions into consideration as a mitigating factor. A mistake? –xeno (talk) 18:32, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
Not sure, leaning toward "absolutely". My gut says RUN AWAY!, but I can't deny -some- positive contributions (mostly vandalism reverts, but then again, I'm one to talk, lately.) I just think it sets a bad precedent; positive contributions or not, the "it's not me, it's my mom (/brother/sister/roommate/frenemy/dog/alternate personality)" excuse is worn so thin you can read a novella through it, and I hate to see it legitimized, even "just this once". Good contributions or not, the fact remains: this user was deceiving the community, pretending to be someone they're not, and how do we know they're not STILL pretending? And I find this especially irksome because of the user's obsession with banned user User:Simulation12, who was doing EXACTLY THE SAME THING. It's your call; I've got my concerns, is all. GJC 19:01, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
yea, i don't really buy it either. i've no prejudice to you blocking if you think that's the best course of action. but most of us use personas, the problem here is that it was an actual person. –xeno (talk) 19:07, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
I'm not going to block...not now, anyway. As for "personas"...well, same could be said for me. Somewhere in the world, I'm sure there is an actual "Gladys J Cortez" (I know there is, b/c I Googled her) but it ain't me. The difference is, I make that crystal clear from my first post in any new environment--and other than the name, I don't invent or borrow other characteristics for myself. This person didn't tell anyone--in fact, I'm pretty sure he/she denied being anyone other than who she claimed to be--and either borrowed or invented characteristics for this persona. Like I said, I'm not blocking....but I will be watching the renamed one verrrry closely. Which is no reflection on you, incidentally; you're showing more good faith than I am, which is a good thing.GJC 19:23, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

(undent, my glasses are lost and I can't count the correct number of colons) GJC pointed me to this thread, sorry if I'm sticking my nose in where it isn't welcome or needed. I've been concerned about this user for a while; in addition to the now-documented impersonation games, I'm concerned about their frequent participation in drama for the sake of drama on ANI threads, on article talk pages, and on the user talk pages of problem editors, frequently making things worse. They've also felt a little "stalky"; at one point I was called out on their talk page, and they certainly have tended to show up frequently in situations I've been involved in. GJC and I have discussed this user a few times before, and decided there was nothing we could really do, and agreed to keep an occasional eye on them (GJC more than me). However, I was quite surprised just now to see someone making preliminary RFA noises on their talk page, that motivates me to try to nip this in the bud if it isn't too late.

I know exactly where GJC is coming from, but I don't believe a block is appropriate or justifiable; they do make some legit edits, and there's no policy against being young, and you can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting half a dozen dramalovers. But this has been, IMHO, a borderline problem user that has now crossed over the border, if only slightly. At the risk of appearing Machiavellian, I wonder if we could take this opportunity to steer the user to a more productive editing style, insistently if necessary. Before, it would have been "something about you just seems a little off; I insist you get a mentor and back away from the drama". Now it can be "you've been impersonating someone in a somewhat disruptive manner; I insist you get a mentor and back away from the drama".

I know this is going to sound like wimping out, but I promise, it's the truth: In spite of the fact that I'm not great with kids and have been a bit annoyed by this person's behavior, I would have been willing to try to help guide them a little. But I'm hardly going to be online for a few weeks, and I've started weaning myself from daily participation even if/when I come back. I think someone else who is actually around more often would be better as a mentor. If anyone here wants to try (seems like it would be a lot of work), I think we have here a user who could benefit from a somewhat tighter leash for a while.

If y'all agree, I suggest we try to have some kind of control over who the mentor is. Someone has independently volunteered to do so on their talk page already, and I don't think that particular volunteer is a suitable mentor. I had in mind someone a bit older and wiser.

I'll try to check back in on this thread once or twice today in case you'd all like further unsolicited drive-by suggestions that complicate your lives. --barneca (talk) 21:08, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

You're always welcome barneca =]. I think a mentor (in addition to their adopter Shapiros) would be entirely appropriate. but with my on-again-off-again style, I'll probably be passing the buck as well =) perhaps Chrislk02 ? –xeno (talk) 21:11, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
Ah, I hadn't noticed that the "adoption" has already occured. I will muster all my remaining willpower and avoid going off on a tangent of how teeth-gratingly ridiculous most of these "adoptions" are (oops, already failed a little there, didn't I?), and what would happen to them if I were in charge.
Chris would be agreat choice if he was interested; I trust his judgement (except for the RFA noises he made on TCK's talk page! :) ), and they seem to have a good rapport. --barneca (talk) 21:51, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
Sorry to take so long to get to this. It took me a bit to figure out what went on. (I still dont understand the details). It looks like EB became TCK (why did this happen? are we sure it was not to evade past scrutiny?) About the admin comments on the page, some early interaction I had with them showed positive signs but the more i dug into there past the more i realzied it was probably a bad comment to leave (that is why I offered to mentor them). Have them stop by my page and I will do what I can. Chrislk02 Chris Kreider 14:53, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Rollback?

He lies to the community and gets rewarded with rollback 3 days later? Ugh, what kind of message is that? Seems like he should at least finish his mentorship. Xeno would you mind reviewing his rollback please? If everyone is OK with it then fine, but I don't know if the granting admin (User:Pedro) knew the background. --(same dude as the other 64 IP above, still dynamic) 64.85.222.56 (talk) 17:03, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Rollback is a fairly uncontroverial tool, and mentorship is rarely a brief endeavour... I'll keep an eye and ensure rollback is used appropriately as I'm sure will Pedro. –xeno (talk) 04:24, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Unprotecting indefinitely semi-protected articles

Hi Xeno - I see from your recent post to ANI that you're willing to consult the protecting admin before unprotecting indefinitely semi-protected articles. Please consider this my request for you to consult me before unprotecting any of the (few) articles I have indefinitely semi'd. I promise you'll get a response more constructive than "no". Sarcasticidealist (talk) 03:43, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

I only noticed two that you had, and I was planning on asking about Ctrl+Alt+Del at some point but that one has only been in place for 4 months (I'm working mostly from the oldest up, and I'll probably give up at some point - there's over 1600 of them at last database dump! –xeno (talk) 03:49, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
Also, I would just like to thank you for going through and doing this. Don't know if you remember, but about 5 months ago I went through and unprotected about 500 and found it to be far harder work than I originally thought...so thanks! (Also, let me know if you ever want any help). Cheers, Tiptoety talk 04:13, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks... I must admit after tonight's work, I'm starting to worry my eyes might be bigger than my stomach. =) (Especially as I see the chaos that starts to hit some of these articles) –xeno (talk) 04:16, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
I know, then comes the daunting task of ensuring that the articles do not once again become the subject of vandalism. Though, I have found that ~75 of the articles I unprotected did not require further protection. Tiptoety talk 04:19, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Heavens yes =) At this point I'm actually going to wait and see how my current unprotections go (see User:Xeno/sandbox) before diving into anymore, so, have at it... Take a look at WP:INDEFSEMI and let me know what you think is the best way to slice up the pie. MZM seems to update every 4 days or so. –xeno (talk) 15:03, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

←I just have to say that you've undertaken a huge job there. :) I don't know if this tip is at all helpful, but the indef-semied article in which I have some involvement, Dapto High School, suggests looking at the editing history of the talk page might be instructive. That particular article, #1511 on your list, still gets periodic vandalism at the talk page from the variable ip vandal who has evidently made it his life's work to express his opinion, uncensored. (See [3]). I don't know if very many vandals are nice enough to leave, "Hi. Still out here; still interested in vandalizing this; thanks" notes, but maybe it's common. What do I know? :) You may have already thought of it, but, in case not, I thought I'd share my experience. Good luck with it, guys! It's a valiant and probably much-needed undertaking. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:09, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

You have to wonder, don't you? By the way, so far as I remember I haven't indef semied anything, but if your work should prove me mistaken (maybe I salted something forevah?), feel free to handle according to your best judgment. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:40, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
On the subject of very-long-term IP vandals, take a look at Miller Beach, which is semied for a year. An IP-hopping editor disagrees that Miller Beach is a neighborhood of Gary, Indiana, and he returns endlessly. Resolved

Hi. I removed your from resolved tag from the secret pages thread at WP:AN. Please hear me out. The discussion about MzMcBride has probably run its course, but there is a chat going on about the merit of secret pages and the priorities of the project as a whole. Sending the lot to MfD will likely do ugly things to the former and cause the latter to be dropped. Assuming that MfD is not fundamentally unlike AfD, the higher stakes make it a far less productive and less civil environment than AN. By waiting, we may be able to avoid having to use it altogether. This argument was better before I rewrote it, sucks to be me.

There is another matter. In my nerve-hit opinion, a serious one. If the secret pages go to MfD while most of them are - or just were - deleted, it is going to affect the situation, and it will be an effect achieved not by its merits but by the use of force. That is obscene. --Kizor 21:14, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Fair enough. The reason I closed it was because it seemed that all that was left were people with their hands in their pockets staring at their shoes, but if you think there's still good to come of the thread, so be it. –xeno (talk) 21:17, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Legend of the Four Nostrils

We actually have four nostrils!Seems a pointless comment but What I actually meant was that, were should I put this fact (with the evidence of course and an explaination) as I can't find where to. and I did check the page for a place to put it. 'The Ninjalemming' 18:12, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

please elaborate... –xeno (talk) 19:02, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
We have four nostrils not two, we know this by studying fish as we evolved from fish (apparently) who have four nostrils (two gills to breath and another two as exausted pipes to let out the air), and we have two so scientists say they migrated back inside the heads and are now what connects our nose to our throat. They are called "choannae" (Greek for 'funnel'). Apparently to do this they had to work their way back through our teeth, evidence for this was when Sweden and China found a fossil of a fish called "Kenichthys campbelli" which is a 395 million-year-old fossil and it shows this process half way. It has two nostrils between it's front teeth, which is similar to human embryos at an early stage but if these fail to join up it causes a 'cleft palate'. Is that elaborating enough? 'The Ninjalemming' —Preceding undated comment was added on 19:43, 24 February 2009 (UTC).
Properly sourced, this should be added to the Nostril page, I suppose. –xeno (talk) 19:44, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Does that mean people with a deviated septum only have 3? - Adolphus79 (talk) 21:02, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
Probably not, the second two arn't actually in the nose they are what connects the two tubey liem thingys in your nose to the throat. When the bone is disaligned one would just be smaller then the other, but air whould most likely still be able to get through; because other wise at certain points these people would not be able to breath as you only breath through one nostril at a time, maybe if one was completly crush it may class as one. But people who sniff cocaine can loss the bone seperating them, resulting in one BIG nostril. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ninjalemming (talkcontribs) 18:16, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

A new question

I hope you don't mind me taking advantage of you when I have questions. You've always been very kind and helpful, and I really appreciate it. So my question now is: What would you do about an article like this? It's only two sentences and, while I'm probably biased, I really, reeeeeeally don't see much notability there. As you can see, it's been tagged for notability for 6 months now and it's barely been touched since then, not to mention that it has zero references. I think it should probably be deleted, but I might be wrong, and even if I'm right I'm not 100% sure whether it should be WP:PROD or WP:AFD. (I'm leaning about 90% toward AFD... right?)

So, although I'm asking about a single article right now, what I'm really asking is whether you'd mind giving me a little guidance on the whole deletion scenario because I've never attempted it before. I've read the two pages referenced above as well as WP:CSD and WP:DEL, but I'm afraid I'm hopelessly confused. ::blush:: Any help you can offer would be appreciated. :) -- edi(talk) 06:25, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

rawr... My personal opinion is... CSD must follow the guidelines of CSD, obvious lack of notability, spam, vandalism, etc... prod is for when it is fairly obvious that the article should be deleted, and you highly doubt that anyone would disagree with you (or articles that aren't specifically covered by CSD; non-notable/hoax/neologisms/etc.)... AfD is when there's a chance that someone might disagree with you, and you think the community needs a consensus... really, CSD is the only one you need to be careful using, due to the strict criteria... This article in particular, I would first try to cleanup (do a google / G-news search for the person), try to find some refs or proff of notability, and if I could not find anything about the subject to show notability, take it to AfD... let me know if you need any help... - Adolphus79 (talk) 06:32, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
 • I would say that in this case, prod, or maybe even a bold redirect to the Chuck Yeager Air Combat (seems most notable of his mentioned 3 projects) might be in order. Those are kind of a "test the waters" kinda activity, and if you encounter resistance, take it to AFD. You might find an admin who would A7 this, but (without looking at the WP:BIO criteria as I haven't had my morning coffee yet) I'd say the sub-stub's one sentence is a (very weak) assertion of notability. –xeno (talk) 16:27, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
looking at it again (now that I'm sober), I would question deletion at all... according to the mobygames website, he seems like he may be failry notable... and G-news seems to have a couple good hits too... if taken to AfD, my vote would probably be keep & cleanup... - Adolphus79 (talk) 16:43, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
the question is, how many of those hits apply to this brent iverson ? (found one so far) but i agree, in some cases, trying to improve something like this is often the path of least resistance. (and, imo, the most gratifying). –xeno (talk) 17:35, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Ok, so... in my defense, before I say the rest of the story... I'm really a cleanup/copyedit kind of girl, not much of a researcher/adder of new material, so I tend to have a bit of a blind spot with that kind of stuff. But I've taken Adolphus' advice and done a bit of research for a change, and... it turns out that Iverson is really something of a celebrity in the field. By far most of the references online are either (1) Wikipedia mirrors/copy jobs, (2) blogs, forums, or other wikis, or (3) lists of credits for video games, but there are actually a handful of pretty solid references that lean toward some degree of notability. So I have all the stuff and I'm going to put it together and post it, and then I think we'll have, at the very least, a decent stub with good references.
I appreciate the help and advice from both of you. I still want to learn more about the whole deletion thing, but that'll come when the time is right. Baby steps... baby steps... :) -- edi(talk) 17:43, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
