Hel ok sael

Regarding the information on Wikepedia - heil ok sael. This is from an Old Norse greeting Hel ok sæl, which is still used on the west coast of Norway and in the North of Norway.

I felt that the information regarding an unsuccessful attempt of a political party to reintroduce the greeting is irrelevant to this page.

I can see absolutely no reason for this to be mentioned twice in a small article relating to this greeting. I believe that if used at all, it should be linked to the political party's side, and not as the main part of a Wikepedia page about the greeting.

Regarding the statement that this greeting is used by police or party members, no Norwegian policemen I know have heard of this.

  • Hi 90.149.206.153, I can see your point and the information is unsourced anyway. Just removing lumps of content without explaining why in the edit summary is going to look like vandalism. As you say there is no reason for two mentions, I would suggest leaving in the sentence in the lead, but removing the National socialism section. Maybe there should be a Wikepedia page about the Old Norse greeting Hel ok sæl, and its meaning, with a link to the Heil ok sael Wikepedia page.

Regarding scources as to the meaning of unsǣle, as sæl means happy, logic would suggest that unsǣle would mean unhappy. The problem with translations from the last century, which are still used as reference, is that they were created by people of religious ties, or political ties, and the translations were influenced by their beliefs.

  • Hi 90.149.206.153, its up to you but creating a separate page would probably get challenged with a merge unless their is lots of information/references for the "Old Norse greeting". I would suggest just adding any information to the existing page. It may be logical that if sæl in Norse was happy unsǣle would mean unhappy in Norse, but Old English it could easily have been changed, English has a history of taking words and changing the meaning, especially as you say that people changed words for religious and/or political reasons. However although I find linguistics interesting its not an area I have much knowledge in - but in the end its sources that count on wikipedia. Dear 'KylieTastic',

Thank you very much for repairing that file name in the link I had mistakenly broken as part of my current drive of serially correcting all occurrences of the name 'hurdy-gurdy' (when it's misspelt without the hyphen). After doing a few dozens of these, one ends up running the risk of ignoring the context of the word being corrected, which clearly happened in this case.

Therefore, I am very grateful to you for catching me out and fixing my unintended error, but please also accept my apologies for causing you unnecessary work, especially since you're supposed to be on a wikibreak.

In any case, get well soon and thanks once again for your helpful assistance.

Image deletion in "Safavid Dynasty"

I have been working on the Safavid Dynasty article for a week now. In the course of it I added two image files from Wiki Commons, neither of which you have deleted. However, in the course of adding these (which are copyright free, IMHO), I may have moved from one place in the article to another this file. (I know I at least used the file as a model for importing my two images]:

I did not originally upload the iumage on either Wikicommons or the Safavid Dynasty article, and I note that it was there before I started editing the article. (I say this to point out that it was not a recent addition.)

Yesterday you deleted the image on the ground that it was not properly uploaded (or at least that's how I understood your comment). I am not very familiar with how to properly upload images to wikipedia (I mainly edit text) and I don't know what was wrong with that image (which is from wikicommons), although I may have caused the problem by moving it in the text.

I'd appreciate if you could look at your edit and tell me if I am responsible for your deletion because I improperly "moved" it.

In any event, IMO, there is nothing wrong with the image. It is copyright free as something that was created over 500 years ago, it is a useful illustration and is from wikicommons.

I looked again and found I had missed that it was actually caused by 'correcting' text in a file name from File:Shah Tahmasp and Humayun.jpeg to File:Shah Tahmāsp and Humayun.jpeg. I tried to make consistent the transliteration of Tahmasp and by using a global search, probably changed Tahmasp to Tahmāsp in the file name, when I shouldn't have. Thanks for correcting it.   • Hi Gano67 That image is on the Italian language wikipedia and can not be used directly on English wikipedia. Also as it flagged as not having valid copyright information so cannot be transferred to English wikipedia or commons. If you did take it yourself and it is your image then either upload locally on English wikipedia here or if your happy to donate it copyright free your can upload to commons here. Black Rock Historic District editing

Hi Kylie-- I actually wrote that source document regarding the "John" Wheeler House in Black Rock. A lot of research has been done on that house since it was written back in 1978. First, Abbott Lowell Cummings of the SPNEA superintended a restoration of the house, and put to rest for all time the idea that it dated from the 18th century. It is undoubtedly a 17th-century survivor, and the only question is whether it dates from circa 1644 (which I believe, based on the historic confluences that took place in that year) or slightly later. Cummings assigned it a date of circa 1680 "to be safe," with which I am happy to concur. Secondly, a researcher by the name of Rebecca Walch has untangled the genealogy of the Wheeler family in Black Rock, which was confused by the fact that there were two individuals by the name of Thomas Wheeler operating at the same time (1640s) in this small community, and they happened to have been half-brothers. She has assigned them the names of Thomas Wheeler Sr. (the builder of the house) and Lieut. Thomas Wheeler (the builder of the fort that was constructed down the road). John Wheeler was a grandson of Thomas Sr. I felt the information contained in this Wikipedia page was erroneous and needed to be corrected. As the consultant who prepared both local and National Register nominations for the district, and the Historian of the City of Bridgeport from 1990 to 2004, I felt I was the man to undertake this task. --Charles Brilvitch

Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement

Dear KylieTastic,

I received a message that my recent change to the page on ACTA has been undone because it did not appear constructive. I disagree, which is why I am writing this message. I changed generic into counterfeit, since the latest version of ACTA is not aimed at targeting generic medicine. It might be one word that does not seem to make a lot of difference, but it does. Generic medicines are cheap, but safe and tested, versions of a medicine for which the patent has ended or for which there is no patent in a certain country. Counterfeit medicines are fake (sometimes lethal, sometimes without an active ingredient) versions of a medicine, sold cheaply under the guise of being the patented product.

Patents were actually removed from the scope of the agreement to stop ACTA from targeting generic medicines. It does aim to stop counterfeit medicine. There are trademark violation provisions, which still fall within the scope of the agreement, that could have an effect (though limited) on the trade in generic medicine, but in no way is ACTA in its final version meant to do this. So could you please accept my change being constructive and change generic to counterfeit?

Thanks for your message. It was indeed me who made some changes to my Wikipedia entry yesterday.

I've read the guidance under "You and your circle" and it says it's okay to edit your own page if the article contains defamatory material. I think the reference to my father's role in my entrance to Oxford falls into this category since it implies that it was only because of my father's personal relationship with the college admissions tutor that I secured a place when, in fact, it was solely because the college had sent me an acceptance letter by mistake. I confirmed this when I met with the admissions tutor many years later. He said the reason he decided to offer me a place was because the college had a legal obligation to honour the original acceptance letter, even though it was a mistake. Nothing to do with who my father was.

The second thing I removed was a reference to an article I wrote for the Spectator about "inclusion" which, for some reason, appeared under the heading of "Personal Life" (and which has now been restored). To begin with, it seems odd to include a single Spectator article under "Personal Life". I've been a weekly columnist for the Spectator since 1998 and it would make more sense to include a link to an archive of all my columns under "Career", rather than just one under "Personal Life". This particular column is often misrepresented by opponents of the free schools policy who falsely claim that I'm opposed to including children with disabilities in mainstream education. That, too, is defamatory, and linking to this article (in such a prominent way) was almost certainly done by someone intent on perpetuating this smear. I think it would be fair-minded to remove this, particularly as I don't want any parents of children with disabilities to be put off applying to any of the three schools within the West London Free School group and nor do I want those children with disabilities currently at the schools, of which there are several, to think they aren't welcome. However, I won't attempt that myself if you think that's a breach of Wikipedia's editorial policy.

The only other thing I did was to remove my middle names and date of birth, which I would prefer not to be included in the article because of the risk of identity theft, and attempt (unsuccessfully) to restore the photograph that originally sat at the top of the article. I had sought and obtained permission from the photographer, so I don't understand why that photograph was removed. However, I've asked the photographer to get in touch with Wikipedia and confirm that she has given her permission for that photograph to be reproduced.

Thanks again for getting in touch. I'm a huge fan of Wikipedia and use it a great deal.

  • Hi Toby thanks for the message, I did try to be fair and not just revert everything and did leave the removal of "following the intervention of his father" as it was un-sourced content. Many would have done a full revert and maybe even flagged the article as dubious due to previous edits violating WP:COI - but I tend to think such actions are a bit harsh, and I don't believe there was any malice to your actions.
As for the "inclusion" article in one way I agree its a bit odd in the personal section, however in another way you could see it as not letting "mild controversy" tarnish the career section, as it isn't indicative of the rest of your career. Looking back though the history it was originally added in a more negative way with this edit and later changed. Although I can see some some would have twisted your words, I don't agree with that the current wording is particular defamatory or placed "in such a prominent way". If the worst anyone could site about you is a "mild controversy" that links to your own article in full then your doing better than most! As its the only criticism, and mild at that, it could be seen by others too not be ad-hearing to Wikipedia:Neutral point of view to remove, as someone thought it was important. However if you would like a second opinion ask on Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions - you'll find editors with more experience on such polices than I am.
Lastly as for the photo File:Toby Young with West London Free School students.jpg all I known is what it says here as once it's been deleted only those with the necessary permission can see any-more info. The only thing I could advise is to ask at the commons village pump hep desk - or it may be easier to just take a new picture yourself and upload.

Thanks for replying so promptly.

If you're going to keep that comment would it be possible to include it as a new paragraph at the end of the career section rather than tagged on to end of the "Personal Life" section, given that it has nothing to do with my personal life? Also, is it possible to rewrite it so it's less clunky? It's introduced a propos of nothing. It's also inaccurate to say I "courted controversy" with the article. Believe it or not, I didn't actively seek to be branded a disablist – it's not a label I "courted". As I said before, it's a smear based on a deliberate misreading of the article in question.

Can I suggest the following wording, which wouldn't change the substance of what's written or the point being made? Most of these are stylistic corrections, such as using only my surname rather than both of my names, using double inverted commas throughout instead of randomly switching from double to single, mixing up the tenses so it goes from the past to the present in a single sentence, and closing the gap between the footnote and the full stop at the end so as to eliminate the superfluous space.

"Young attracted mild controversy in 2012 after he wrote an article criticising the emphasis on "inclusion" in state schools, with some people interpreting this as an attack on including disabled children in mainstream education. He denied this charge, citing a misunderstanding of what he meant by "inclusion"."[23]

  • Hi Toby I think your demonstrating why Wikipedia has rules against self editing, it's too easy to see things in an overly negative way. When I read that someone "courted controversy" I would not assume it was intentional. Yes some people may deliberately court controversy, noticeably the type of celebrity that craves attention but has no talent, but I think most times it is said it is unintentional and taken as such. Also reading the linked article gave no real sense that it was your intention. However, it's a very human response to have such a reaction, and partly why I keep my online life fairly anonymous. Lastly, after getting a totally unbiased second opinion between the original sentence vs yours from a work colleague I'm happy to point out that I have adjusted the article.   • Hi Rail1435, I fixed the images for the HXD2.1 and HXD2C on List of locomotives in China however the other images can not be shown as images, as they are not hosted on English Wikipedia, or on Wikimedia Commons. Reverted your unnecessary work

I created a new article that included an infobox image, while preparing the upload of the image in another browser window. I ensured the name of the image in the infobox was the same as the image I was simultaneously preparing for upload. By the time I completed the file upload and returned to the article, you had already deleted the file name from the infobox. Only a few minutes had passed; the red link literally existed for only a few minutes. I reverted your unnecessary work. Please do not work on articles that are only a few minutes old to prevent this from occurring in the future; I suggest ensuring the red link has been there for at least 24 hours. Thanks.   • Hi Prhartcom I work on checking problems flagged in Category:Articles with missing files and after sorting 20,000 - 30,000 of them I know that in general their are very very few images added to articles that if not already existing are not uploaded in a couple of minutes. In this case I didn't actually note the time past as I was catching up after a few days so sorry I was a bit quicker than I normally would be! However it had been 8 minutes, and you didn't actually get around to uploading till 31 minutes later. One reason I still revert/remove even if its relatively new is even seasoned editors either forget to upload or make a typo, so getting a notification often helps fix the problem. An example in the same editing session is this where I actually noticed the editor had uploaded but it was a typo so fixed, however if I had reverted I guess they would have fixed themselves. So sorry again for the minor inconvenience but for every case like this there are literally thousands of random additions, erroneous corrections, and plain old vandalism I have fixed.   • Hi Xyzerb Thank you, always happy to help. However at Wikipedia no one is on charge, a very odd idea but one that appears to work overall. I started just like you a couple of years ago and I know when your new all the policies and things are overwhelming. Administrators are not really people with more say on what goes on that every other user, they just have more tools and responsibly. They are voted in and can be voted out, and can be challenged on any edit. If any thing is "in charge" it is the policies, and they are like the rest of the articles written by consensus not set down by any higher powers. One key policy I didn't get at first was Assume good faith - but you soon realise that most people are trying to the right thing, and often its just misunderstandings and frustration. I like seeing that "assume good faith" is listed as a fundamental principle. As a new user, I had no idea how to contribute, so I searched for my hometown, found the list of companies and thought I'd found the perfect place for my first few articles. My first error was not thinking twice about the section: everything else is so well-documented--why is this area so sparse? Then, after some frustration with formatting, not understanding the draft process, and a couple of unceremonious deletions, I went into full-defensive mode. I still have a lot to learn here.
I still think moving rejected articles to user's page rather than just deleting them would preferable to the current "doesn't meet the standards, press the smite key" process (as illustrated here by Strong Bad).

image was there for years, not a single issue or complaint. there wouldnt be, it's mine, i own it, uploaded it, and that's the end of it.

Some moron comes to the page, deletes the files, and now I have to go through hoops to restore/reupload? No thanks. Not my job.

Please tell me the point of contributing to Wiki as the rights holder if some careless twit is just going to remove the contribution years later and then leave the rights holder to clean up the mess?

  • Hi 2605:E000:2203:1E00:387F:EBBC:3C65:575A, I understand your frustration, I've shouted at my computer a couple of times at the actions of those over on commons. Why this image was not picked up for a year I don't know (Image was uploaded 14 March 2013 from file page still on Google cache). The annoying thing is warning messages are only posted to commons, in this case on commons:User_talk:Knacrob so unless you go there regularly or have changed the default email notification you don't know there is a problem till the image has gone.   • Hi Orchidariumguru, welcome to Wikipedia. The reason why your edit was reverted was because you added content to Orchidarium which is a disambiguation page. What this means is it's a page that just redirect the reader to several options to do with the title. In this case it only has two sub articles, but some a lot such as Cab. If you want to add your information about Orchidarium, you would normally add it to the relevant sub article. In this case, neither of the sub articles are really specific so I think maybe this could be a case to change the page from a disambiguation page to a normal one. I'm at work at the moment and wanted to just give a quick reply, I'll have another look later. The other big issue was the content was not referenced - and all content on Wikipedia should have valid reliable sources. The images were not valid either.   • Hi M2545, although I do know how to move images to commons I'm not sure this is OK to move as per the notice added to it. I wouldn't want to move it then it be deleted from commons and lost from the German article as well. I would advice either just uploading a local copy to English Wikipedia, or asking for copyright advice from someone more qualified. Henry Edward Colville

Hi,

I was looking at this page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Edward_Colville) and noticed that someone had corrected his name to 'Colvile' (though not in the article title) and you'd reverted on Feb 11. As one of his (distant) relatives, I can confirm that it's the correct spelling of our particular branch of the family - see this Spectator piece (http://archive.spectator.co.uk/article/29th-december-1900/3/it-was-announced-on-friday-that-sir-evelyn-wood-ac) or the title page of his book (https://archive.org/details/landnilesprings00colvgoog). Would you be able to cancel the changes? I'd have gone in and changed it myself but I didn't want to be rude...

  • Hi Robert thanks for getting in touch. At first I was confused as there are very reliable sources for 'Colville', such as the The Library of Congress. We often get these issues when both spellings were actually used, but for an Englishman of this period that is very unlikely. However I have done some preliminary research and found we have two people Colvile, H. E. (Henry Edward), Sir, 1852-1907 and Colville, H. E. (Henry Edward) are actually both listed at The Library of Congress. So it will need some checking to make sure all information pertains to the correct person and to work out if we need two articles. I'm happy to sort it out but it's late and I'm doing 11 hour days, and 7 days a week, at the moment, but I'll get around to it and sort it out for you. Just not tonight.   • Hi B.E.R.T.Car2 their were a number of concerns regarding your post. The Conflict of interest guidelines are there for just this reason - when you are close to a subject you tend not to see the problems. There was no claim the addition was "false, inaccurate, misleading, destructive, berating or wrong" it was removed because it did not appear to meet the Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines. Firstly none of the information had references so failed Wikipedia:Verifiability and as such did not show reason B.E.R.T passes Wikipedia:Notability. Note that importance is not the same as notability, and just because what you do is admirable and important to your campus does not make it notable. Much of it read like original research and certainly not encyclopaedic and it read more like a promotional post I would expect to find on your campus website promoting campus groups. The section was also disproportionately large in the context of the article. A quick google shows enough references to support a small section written in a more encyclopaedic format. You may have noticed, that the logo you replaced of the two children with France-shaped bodies, is very close to the 'Startright' shoe image used for decades on London Underground posters by the children's shoe manufacturer.   • Hi David, I just removed the link as it wasn't valid not because of any copyright concerns - it's often a good way to point out an accidental error (such as forgetting to upload) to the original author. I must admit image copyright is a very confusing area and I'm not sure if it's likely to be challenged as it has no source or licensing information - however as it's a photo from 1905 it probably is in the public domain now, but it depends on the country of origin. Taj images

Hi, KyleiTastic - I saw your edit summary and felt your frustration - (Fixed broken (red-linked) image - editor 'correcting' text in file names - again!) - so here I am to apologize. I don't know what is causing that problem to happen because all I'm doing is a copy/paste of the file name and moving it. I'm not changing the text. If I knew what caused it, I'd fix it. What's even more weird is that when I go back in the edit history, and pull up the diff to see what you're seeing as a red linked image, it isn't showing up as red linked. Maybe you can help me get down to the bottom of this filename cut/paste mystery. Atsme☯Consult 21:39, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

  • Hi Atsme I think something changed a few weeks ago (not sure when) but I started to see a lot of seasoned editors breaking images when I'd never come across them before. At first I thought it was an update to AWB as the first few were with that, but then I noticed it with other scripts, or edits like yours not noting any script. I looked for a reason but couldn't find one. The only thing I could think of is some helper script/program/browser add-on that modifies entries however they have been made, but I have no idea what. I was starting to think it was all just a bit coincidence but from what you said about copy/paste it sounds like there is another issue.... somewhere! KylieTastic (talk) 22:31, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
  • Actually Atsme is was not when you where copy/paste content but this edit with the summary "quote box sig" - were you using any particular tools or scripts for that? Maybe User:Cameltrader/Advisor as per another recent issue User_talk:EChastain#Breaking_images - another editor who had the same problem I flagged here User_talk:Colonies_Chris/Archive/2015/Apr#Hey.2C_I.27ve_noticed_your_breaking_images. but I dont know if they were using the same script. Shivprasad Koirala is one of the leading author of technical books related to Microsoft Technologies like ASP.NET, MVC, sharepoint and 7 times Microsoft MVP. I have searched and found many of English Author biography page in Wikipedia. My mistake is the page isn't Complete but I was collecting other information.

Can you please revert the deletion. You can search about Shivprasad and you will find almost all of the technical community recognize his contribution.

  • Hi Pyarb having a page on Wikipedia is not based on what someone has done or if it is important but judged by Notability and Verifiability. There are a lot of authors who don't make it onto Wikipedia. If Shivprasad Koirala is notable enough then you need to create an article with good references to support what is written. It's difficult to comment further as I am not an administrator I can no longer see the article, but if I remember correctly the article had no sources at all.
From your talk page I can see this is the third time this has happened - you should work on new articles in your user area or the draft area and use the Articles for creation process, that way they will not be deleted and you loose your work. I suggest also reading Your first article.

About edit change

Hi I made an edit on David Mundell MP's details on his majority. Because the election results of the 2015 UK general election have been announced, I changed his majority numbers to up-to-date figures. I do not see at all why my edit would be deemed not constructive at all. I politely ask that you change the edit to the version that I changed unless you have a more plausible reason why this edit is at all not constructive.

  • Hi RastaFarOut, did you not look at the article as you left it? see here. You attempted to hot-link external image - note that images must be uploaded WP:UPIMAGE (copyright allowing). You removed the year for the date of birth, and adding the names to all the films reads like Wikipedia:Wikipuffery. I've added back the In the Production Office info (without the SHOUTing caps) and fixed up the ref to it. Please carry on editing but preview your edits and how they look.   • Hi RastaFarOut to add more on the film info... if you want to turn the films into a List use asterisks at the front of each item, but you should add info about what Tricia Vessey did in that movie, not add the most famous named actor or director to make it sound more important. After all a lead role in a lesser film is more important than a very minor role in a film with someone really famous. As such her profile at the IFFR [5] suggests writer/produced/directed to more things The Sad Guy (2009, short) and Weekends (2012, short) you could add those. Hope that helps?   • Hi Acagastya I guess its personal preference, but I prefer the ping or mention (for logged in users) as all the notification templates can just become like spam on your talk page. However if depends on how people have there notifications set up, I get an email for talk page message or mentions but I can't remember what the default is.   • Hi Tyoung8, I agree the use of the title are wrong as policies suggest refraining from overuse of titles even when they are used. As I can see no evidence you've ever used the title it's certainly wrong so I have removed. However I can not agree that "it is clearly intended as a political dig" - looking at the users edits in case this was one of several needed reversion, I can see no such pattern. It looks like they just pop in now and then and make 'corrections' on all sorts of issues, come correct but some misguided.   • Hi Munifi3nt, you can only use images on English language Wikipedia that are either hosted on |wikimedia commons or locally. This image is on the Persian language wikipedia so can not be used directly. Also the image has no source and looks like it was probably just taken from the internet as many other versions exist, so it is probably not 'public domain' as claimed but copyrighted. Both commons and English language wikipedia are much more strict on copyright issues, so if copied it would most likely be deleted. KylieTastic (talk) 11:47, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

The file page [here] gives the reason as "Unambiguous copyright violation" and was deleted by Nthep. As the file page has been removed I can not see any-more information that that - but I assume maybe it was a photo taken from another website that was copyrighted. Choking

Thank you for reviewing my first Wikipedia submission.

The key point on swallowing is that it can occur either at the level of the trachea or at the level of the throat (or both). It does not require obstruction at the level of the trachea AND the throat. This is misleading and inaccurate.

On another point, I am the copyright holder of two jpeg images which clarify this matter of obstruction well. How do I go about installing those in the article?

The two files I believe you were trying to add Choking Blocked Throat.jpg and Choking Blocked Larynx.jpg do not exist on English Wikipedia or WikiMedia Commons - images must be uploaded WP:UPIMAGE (copyright allowing) before you can use them. cross border xpres/Tijuana cross-border terminal

Hi Kylie, you reverted an image on the cross-border xpress and I would like to ask if you could review images which were previously deleted from the article. The first images I uploaded in August, 2014, I clearly stated source, i.e. ASA (Mexican airport authority), City of San Diego and those which I created. Since I did not own the former and failed to understand the wiki protocol, I uploaded all the images under fair use. Stefan2 from Sweden flagged all of them for deletion and after a discussion with him, I requested all the images be deleted and then ONLY uploaded the images I created. I wrote most of the article and also submitted more than 3 dozen reference articles including a feature Wall Street Journal report which clearly established who I was and what I did. In September, 2014, the cross-border terminal article was selected for DYK, passed the review process and reached the 5,000 viewer threshold, no one objected to my images but then in December on Administrator claimed thaT I had made "false claims" and had the images deleted. My identify was also questioned, claiming that there was no proof that User:rnieders and Ralph Nieders quoted in the news article, were the same person. I have now spent more than 7 months, have submitted dozens of documents, 2 U.S. Congressmen have been involved in confirming I exist, a senior member of the San Diego Association of Governments can confirm my work since 1986, but nothing seems to satisfy that the work belongs to me, even though I have been the sole source for all these images. The original line drawings were done on a Toshiba 3100 (1987), which had a graphic's card but those lap tops did not support color, only line drawings. The actual images were actually air-brushed, not computer generated and I still have possession of the original. I started the cross-border terminal project in 1990 and carried it until 2006, during which computer and animation technology changed dramatically. The first image (Mexicana de Aviacion) was a pencil sketch, my original was never returned by Mexicana, but I still have the letter of intent and my last negotiations with the Otay-Tijuana Venture LLC is supported by over 100 emails dealing with the land acquisition. I have submitted documents from 1991-2006 including from Deputy Mayor Bob Filner of San Diego (1991), U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein (1993), Johnson Controls World Wide Services (1996) Mexican Presidential Commissioner Ernesto Ruffo Appel (2001), US-Mexico Presidential Commission Partnership for Prosperity (2002) Mexican Ministry of Transportation (2006), San Diego Reader (2014) which actually published some of my images one of which Google shows when Tijuana Cross-border terminal is entered into their search and I can still supply further information. I have been working with Hjmitchell in England. Could I send you the images for your review? This is the world's first true cross-border terminal and what made it happen were the images that were central in showing how the concept would work. They were used by from Washington DC to Mexico City. The images were central in making this project happen, I was the sole developer and promoter, designed the images which is also supported by a television news interview that shows my images of which I still have a VHS copy from 2001, but all this data seems to be ignored and the fact that this is a high profile project, the largest private sector project along the US-Mexico border. I am not trying to sneak any images into Commons. The images were central in the article I wrote. Could I email you the documents sent to Hjmitchell and the Wikimwedia Foundation in San Francisco?   • Hi Rnieders, yes I did revert some vandalism on Cross Border Xpress that also effectively restored the broken image. I sympathise with your problem but there is nothing I could do, I've had my own troubles with copyright images. Even if you sent me the documents and I think your the valid copyright holder my opinion would not help resolved the issue. If you've already been talking to admins such as HJ_Mitchell and the Wikimedia Foundation about this there is nothing more I could add. All though I would be surprised if the Foundation had any input on content issues such as this. There maybe a process either here or on commons that could help resolve things but I don't know of one - I'd suggest asking for advise in the Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions - lots of editors with more experience than I have help out there. Hi Kylie, thank you for replying, your input has helped. The Foundation does not get directly involved in issues but their legal counsel did write back and supplied the protocol which begins with trying to resolve it directly with the Administrator involved, who has chosen not to respond, then I can start the appeal and finally the arbitration. What is frustrating that while the accused has to spend months and hundreds of hours get a US Councilman and two Congressmen involved, supplied dozens of references included in the Wiki article and there is a significant amount of information on me on Google, and Administrator can simply make allegations, actually take sentences out of context from prior discussions, then not support them, refuse to acknowledge any information sent or freely available, and then simply say no and then claim that regardless of the outcome, the images have no educational value, are self-promoting and therefore are excluded. That is an abuse of privilege that discourages legitimate people from becoming involved with Wikipedoa anmd Commons as none of this was suggested during the DYK review and I would not have wasted my time submitting anything to Commons. I am a novice to this Wiki process which places me at a disadvantage against a seasoned Administrator that instead of having stated the problems upfront as Stefan2 from Sweden did in August when I uploaded the images under fair use, he made no allegation, not personal attacks and simply facts, he was clear and professional, the Administrator that emerged in December began with accusations of "false claims," stated that a Cessna 210 is a "hobby" plane, a plane used for surveillance and aerial photography from the U.S.-Mexico border to Colombia, no hobby plane, that I used hobby cameras, not knowing what I did in Mexico, is abuse. Blank album cover images

I noticed you were making a bunch of changes around non-images being used in Template:Infobox album. Some of those articles had the image set to "blank" which was rendering incorrectly. The infobox documentation recommends the use of "blank" to avoid categorizing images in Category:Album infoboxes lacking a cover, but a recent change to the template broke this.   • Hi hinnk I've only come across a few while sorting out other image problems - I notice Category:Album infoboxes lacking a cover has 19,785 entries and from my edit summaries looking for "non image from image field" here I've only removed 'blank' on less than a dozen, so it would not be hard to re-add, but in the scope of 19,785 is it an issue? Invalid to include in-line link examples?

Hello, I noticed that you removed the in-line link example I provided for 'Comparative SWOT analysis'?   • Hi ISWOT, I've just got to work so only a quick answer... but the number one reason is we don't use direct links to external web-pages in articles. The reason being I believe is its not clear to readers that its going to an outside site, rather than an internal link. Links in article content should only be Wiki-links, external links go either in a dedicated external link section at the bottom or most of the time via a reference. Here's the article about External links and another for Referencing for beginners. Lastly all-though I'm sure people who know the subject would understand what www.MindFraming.org is about you had it as Comparative SWOT analysis - A reader just wondering what Comparative SWOT analysis was and would click be expecting another article would be confused. Hi Kylie.

Someone has made some silly changes to my Wikipedia page.

They've added "formally styled 'The Hon Toby Young'", which simply doesn't make sense. I am not "formally styled" anything – whatever "formally styled" means, which is a mystery to me.

This sentence has a word or two missing and, as such, doesn't make sense:

His mother, Sasha Moorsom, was a BBC Radio producer, artist and writer[4] by her husband Michael, Baron Young of Dartington, a Labour Life Peer and pioneering sociologist who coined the word "meritocracy".[5]

Please replace the words "by her husband Michael, Baron Young of Dartington..." with "and his father was Michael Young..." His formal title was "Lord Young of Dartington", not "Baron Young of Dartington", but it would be odd to add that after just his first name "Michael".

This sentence is syntactically eccentric:

He then retook his O-Levels and went to the Sixth Form of William Ellis School, Highgate, leaving with two Bs and a C at A-level and managed to obtain a place at Brasenose College, Oxford after he was sent an acceptance letter by mistake; apparently he had been offered a low BBB place under a scheme to give access to comprehensive pupils.[6][7][8]

There should be a full stop after "mistake", the word "apparently" should be deleted, since it suggests it's not true when it is, and the next sentence should begin with the word "he".

There's an eccentric use of a colon in this sentence:

He is currently an associate editor of The Spectator for which he writes a weekly column, and a blogger for The Daily Telegraph: his blog was long-listed for the 2012 George Orwell Prize for blogging.[12]

It should be changed to a full stop and the word "his" should be the beginning of a sentence.

This sentence is both non-sensical, because of a missing word or two, and contains a typo:

Simon Pegg played Young, who co-produced the film,[16] released in Britain on 3 October 2008 reachiong the number one spot at the box office in its opening week.[17][18]

The first sentence should end after "film". Then the next should begin, "It was released... etc". The word "reachiong" should be spelt "reaching".

This paragraph is misleading and contains a superfluous comma:

Young was lead co-founder of the West London Free School, the first and pioneering free school to sign a funding agreement with HM Education Secretary, and now serves as CEO of that school's charitable trust.[21][22] The Trust opened a primary school in Hammersmith in 2013 and a second primary in Earls Court in 2014. Young is a follower of the American educationalist, E.D. Hirsch, and an advocate of a traditional knowledge-based approach to education.[23]

There's no such position as "lead co-founder" so the word "lead" should be deleted. The words "first and pioneering free school" are non-sensical since a school, being an inanimate object, can't be "pioneering". So delete the words "and pioneering". The words "HM Education Secretary", which I've never heard used before, should be replaced with either "Michael Gove" or "the Secretary of State for Education". There shouldn't be a comma after "Hirsch".

Finally, this sentence is inaccurate and insulting to my wife and women in general:

Young is married to Caroline née Bondy (The Hon. Mrs Young)[24] with whom he has four children.

She is not "nee Bondy", but "Caroline Bondy" since she didn't change her name when she married me. Nor is she "The Hon. Mrs Young", so that sentence should be deleted. And there should be a comma after "Bondy". So the sentence should read: "Young is married to Caroline Bondy, with whom he has four children."

Is there any way of putting a lock on the page after you have corrected these mistakes? It's tedious having to send you these messages after people who don't have a good command of the English language or its grammatical rules – and are careless to boot – inadvertently vandalise this Wikipedia page. Either that, or allow me to simply revert to the version you originally signed off on.

  • Hi Toby sorry I've been (still am) sick and works been crazy as well - and it was a very long message! Ok, so lets cover the easy stuff:
  • From Advice for editors with a COI its perfectly fine to "fix spelling and grammatical errors"
  • If a user adds odd stuff, consider posting them a message on their talk page - after all Wikipedia works because the majority of editors mean well.
  • If you think edits add incorrect information one option you have is to add tags questioning the content if no source given: {{cn}} (that adds [citation needed]) or {{According to whom}} (adds [according to whom?]), or maybe {{Dubious}} (adds [dubious – discuss]).
  • You can also post to places where multiple people will see the message try to help. The friendlist place is Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions or as the article is a BLP you can post concerns at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard
  • It is very unlikely that any administrator would lock the topic as this is usually only done for persistent vandalism - requests are made at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. Also that would stop any new valid information being added, which is against policy. Wikipedia like life is a balancing act.
I've made some changes, but I don't really have the time or the inclination at the moment to spend more time as I feel dreadful. I'm moved, rather than delete, the odd title issue as it's been added twice before, and noted your statement of not using it since the 80's. I've change the weird "by her husband" but not your fathers title as the main article is Michael Young, Baron Young of Dartington and I don't have a copy of the 1978 "The London Gazette" or Burke's Peerage & Baronetage to verify either way. I've removed the "apparently" as I agree its not what the source says. A few other copy edit items as well.

I understand that I don't have a sign in and that my claim to be anthropologist is unverifiable, however, if you look at the user who changed the entry to Maasai Mara, from Masai Mara, you will see that the links they give do not support the change.   • Hi 129.22.1.18 Wikiepdia runs on the principle of Verifiability, as such if you can find sources to back up your claim then the name could be changed. Linked from the article is the Kenyan website http://www.maasaimaraconservancies.co.ke/ however a quick Google also found a government site http://www.narok.go.ke/maasai-mara and a Kenyan University site http://www.mmarau.ac.ke/ all using Maasai Mara. No one is disputing that the locals use "Masai Mara", but there are many such naming issues around the world so as a general rule the official name is used, but the local or historic names are given fair mention, and unfortunately we can't please everyone. I've come across some locations with more than 2 names all with people claiming their version is the correct one. Personally I prefer local historical names, however it is not personal opinion that counts. The locals need to get the official name changed, as many indigenous populations are doing world wide. If you can find authoritative sources to back your argument then great, but you can't just assert. As I'm sure you can imagine that can just result in articles reverting back and forth, usually resulting in editors being banned. Also these types of point asserting usually introduce errors in the form of broken wiki-links, categories, templates, images, urls... just as your edit did (broke several images) thus degrading the information for the readers. In fact, I've never seen it used at all that way when I was over there. Reversion of Henry Adkinson change

Hi Kylie,

I edited that submission because according to Baseball-Reference.com(which the original contributor cites, but has conflicting information) and baseball-almanac.com, the information is wrong. Henry Magee Adkinson did not play for the St. Louis Browns in 1895 (or ever) according to the above-mentioned sources. The player was actually John Harry Atkinson which is what I was reflecting in my changes.   • Hi Msw sportscards, I'm not doubting that there was a John Harry Atkinson but why (apart from the one odd link) do you think this person is the same as Henry Adkinson - Maybe the Henry Adkinson is incorrect (there certainly looks like dubious sources) but as the person you are talking about has a different name, and different almost everything else you should create a new article such as John Atkinson (baseball player) not create a edit the article of a completely different name! This is two different issues, creating John Atkinson (baseball player) and fixing any errors, of flagging for deletion if made up of Henry Adkinson. As the DOB and State, and DOD are all different I can;t see how they are the same person. However, as it still leaves 2 references to pages about a "Henry Adkinson" I assume they existed as well (probably). So just create John Atkinson (baseball player) about your other player. The source you provided reflects the same information that is on the Major League Baseball website. I would think that the League would have the most accurate information. P.S. As for the find a grave site, you have to be careful with the text on the site (a lot of mistakes) but it can be a good source for grave/monument images to back up claims. I'm not sure how you are using the history to think I added the information, unless you have just been selecting the date parts and found that my edit was the first line that didn't contain what you think is incorrect. You need to use the "cur" to see what has change since; the "prev" to see what the edit changed; or select the edits by the "radio buttons" (highlighted circles) and use the "Compare selected revisions" cutton at the top. So...

  • Hi Ashwin.appus I have added a template to your page Nileshwar Railway Station so it has a submit button. However as I said in the teahouse question, if you don't have this on a draft all you have to do is edit your page and add {{subst:submit}} to the top of the page and save. However note that as PotatoNinja said you probably need more than 1 reference, although articles about places like stations tend to get away with less than about compaines and people. See if you can find some more references first to add before submitting. Sorry I can't help more but I'm not sure what the Wikipedia:Notability guidelines are for articles like this. Streetfighters

Hi, i edited the Streetfighters article as its simply not correct, its based on the kind of Motorcycles that appeared in Streetfighters magazine, rather then the correct facts. The photo i put up pre-dates most of the sources in the article, simply put the term was used to describe a new style of fast aggresive chopper style bike (as featured in back street heroes magazine) way before most sportsbikes even existed. There are a wealth of magazine scans around the internet that back this up.

  • Hi I assume your talking about Streetfighter and the edit that I reverted that left the article like this (even though this was by a similar but different IP address). Firstly look at the current article, the images are valid, and it has references, then look at yours here, the image is not valid, and there is no reference for the addition, plus you deleted all the referenced content. Wikipedia runs on the Golden rule most importantly in this case reliable sources. You not only removed sourced content, valid images, but added an invalid image and un-sourced (badly formatted) text. If you can find reliable sources to back up changes then great please do, but otherwise its counts as original research. If you want further help of advise on this may I suggest The Wikipedia Teahouse where you can find a number of experienced editors willing at answer questions on editing. Or in the case of this article try Wikipedia:WikiProject Motorcycling where you'll find people also interested in this subject and may be willing to help. I had added a section regarding the controversy surrounding Susya. I didn't not alter the the rest of the page and merely added a section presenting the views of the Israeli government about the town. I would think this is relevant even if one does not agree with the Israeli position.   • Hi Mee243, the only edit I have made on Susya was to revert this edit by 82.72.176.223. Your edit appears to have been removed by a mass removal by these 4 edits by Settleman which from the comment appears to be splitting the content into several articles. You content appears to now be in Khirbet Susya. Its not a subject I know about, I only reverted what looked like vandalism (an Ip editors 1st edit changing Israel to Palestine.   • Hi KidHQ no worries at all, we all start to learn how things work around here my making a few mistakes. If you had added an edit summary at least it would have been obvious to others your reason (i.e. you had made a request at Files for Upload). Also Assume good faith is a key principle around here so no one should jump to any conclusions of you being a spammer etc, or blocking an account for such a minor thing. Unfortunately the image is unlikely to be uploaded as images on imgur appear to have a copyright attached. You can not upload locally to English Wikipedia until your auto confirmed (4 days and 10+ edits) however you can upload 'free' images to Wikimedia Commons (upload wizard here). However as it has been uploaded already they may say its been taken from the net and delete, so if you can you should delete from imgur (assuming you only uploaded to make it available for your "Files for Upload" request.   • Hi KidHQ you can use images on commons directly here on English Wikipedia (or any language Wikipedia). Where images uploaded locally can only be used on the local language they were uplaoded to. The difference is commons only accepts 'free' images, so images you take yourself or come from a compatible licence (i.e. Creative Commons Share Alike, etc. this). So I have added your image back to the article (changing the name to match). So congratulations, you've successfully donated an image to the greater good and improved an article here.   • Hi Sunshine-AZ, as you said that you have taken the images yourself then the easiest and best way is to upload to Wikimedia Commons (upload wizard here). Wikimedia Commons is a sister project of Wikipedia for hosting all copyright free media (mostly images). Any images uploaded to commons can be used directly here on Wikipedia. Reason for reverting the edits?

Could you please tell me the reason for reverting my edits completely?

Though most of them were agreeable.

And it doesn't make sense that you have done the same mistake again like using different spellings for same name "Qutub" as "Qutab" and "Qutb". If you think I have made the edits wrongly, then atleast you have must have done it the right way.

Just go and check out the edits reverted and you can find that the name qutub, qutab and qutb is used for the same name. Hope that using this way will definitely irritate the readers. So please finalize with any one of those names and use it everywhere.


And I would also strongly suggest you to add the spelling "stempede"(as edited by you) in all the dictionaries as well. Because all these days I have learnt the spelling of " stampede" as "stampede" and not "stempede" in every dictionary I have used.

But I strictly agree with one revert that you have made to my edits, i.e., the spelling of "qutbminar" in the wiki URL since the URL won't work if it is changed. But even that will be fine if the page is redirected to the new URL with the changes suggested.

One last thing from my side is, it doesn't mean how proficient and experienced you are in editing the wiki pages, but you will have to do it with perfection so that amateurs like us will gain inspiration from you rather than criticizing you.

I'm sorry if I have hurt you by my fierceful words. But I will always suggest you to review all my edits when it comes to your notice so that I can improve myself and reach heights like you in editing the Wikipedia pages.

  • Hi Nirmal Balakrishnan and welcome to Wikipedia and please do not be discouraged by a revert. Editing Wikipedia is an incremental process in which we hope, and the evidence so far shows, we can build a great encyclopedia.
Sorry that one of your first edits got reverted, I understand how that feels the first time - I did not actually notice you were a new editor - it was just 1 of a few hundred edits I made yesterday. Also note that almost everyone is reverted, even administrators, seasoned editors and new editors. We all make mistakes - we are but human.
I know it may seam odd at first but the way we work here is by the policy BRD - you correctly made Bold edits; I spotted errors so I Reverted and now we are Discussing. Also you can if the reason is clear just try to edit again correcting issues such as per my edit summary fixing the "breaking ref urls, wiki-links, images."
Yes I could have corrected the introduced errors, and sometimes I do, but it is the responsibility of those making the changes not to introduce errors, and not the responsibility of other to spend time correcting them. As the page history is preserved its not like your work is deleted and lost, something that isn't always clear to new editors, so when you are reverted you can go to the history and either recover work to re-add, or you can if no one else has edited after just edit from your old version.
Although you are 100% correct of the spelling mistakes such as "stempede" these can easily be spotted and fixed, however once links to external websites, other articles and images are broken they are not obvious. So reverting these type of errors will always take prescience over typos, spelling mistakes and capitalisations.
As for your "fierceful words" I actually found you polite and friendly, just expressing obvious concerns than many of us had when we started editing here. As such you meet another of the Five pillars to aspire to here (Wikipedia:Civility).
Finally onto the article: unfortunately with a lot of articles like this there are multiple names and people assert back-and-forth and things get to be a mess. We normally try to find an official name but even officially places and people can be refereed to as different things. However my research I believe gives a conclusive answer - from the main given sources....
  • Archaeological Survey of India is a government site here uses "Qutb Minar"
  • The UNESCO World Heritage Centre is a respected site here and uses "Qutb Minar"
  • http://qutubminardelhi.com uses "Qutub Minar" but does not appear to be official in any way and its references are a mixture of Qutb and Qutub
  • Also the Plaque from the site uses "Qutb Minar" - so a very good source.

  • Hi Sunny as the decline notice links too we have policies for the Notability of subjects on Wikipedia, and one specific for people (Wikipedia:Notability (people)). Also there is the golden rule that states "Articles generally require significant coverage, in reliable sources, that are independent of the topic.".
  • The first link is to amazon and thus proves that they wrote a book, but is not independent writing about Andrea Jarvis as its purpose is to sell
  • The second link is a huge issue not independent either as it appears to be her own promotional site. It's important to have these links on the article, but it does not satisfy the Notability or Golden rule
  • The second link also has a massive issue I missed the first time round - pure copyright violation - the page is a copy of the About page - Wikipeida can not accept text just copied from other websites.
  • The third link just returns a "page not found" page
Lastly it was not reviewed in 10 seconds the page history shows it was submitted at 18:18 and reviewed at 18:20 - although no it did not take much longer to open three links and realise that Notability had not been met. I hope hat helps explain things, but unfortunately it will need to be completely re-written to avoid the copyright issue, and you'll need to find other sources to show notability. about Lane Frost wiki edits

I will admit i am not very clear on how to ask a question but here it goes. i have read about Canada's 1988 winter Olympics having bull riding as a host event and that Lane Frost had won the bronze on the gold winning us Olympic team, the teams Ted Nuce having won the gold. so when i saw that it was not listed anywhere on the Lane Frost wiki so i tried to corrected it. if i was wrong and he just won a cultural event i am sorry but as i understand it Canada chose bull riding to be their host sport, the host nation having the right remove one sport and ad another the year that they host. so from what i had read off of sport and official sights was that 1988 was the only year that rodeo was an official event and thought i should put that on wiki. if my edits where removed for another reason i would like to know.

  • Hi 82.132.216.222 I've just traced this IP address (see here) and it says that this is a "Confirmed proxy server" and also that this is a "Telefonica O2 UK" address. So I would guess your using the mobile network to access Wikipedia - So all this means is that someone earlier in the day was using the same service to vandalise Wikipedia. Yes you are right I do access Wikipedia from the O2 UK mobile network. BUT - Wikipedia has now blocked EVERYONE using this network from making edits. This is crazy. I have NEVER done anything wrong or vandaliam on your site. I am a writer, and some time ago someone put completely incorrect information on one of your pages because they had completely mis-read one of my books. At that time I was able to edit and so was able to change the awful remarks of the idiot who had written them. But now I am blocked - through no fault of my own - and therefore if someone else does the same thing I am now unable to answer. This is terrible. What is Wikipedia doing?   • Hi 82.132.217.233 no one accused you as a person of the vandalism - as of this moment neither the previous IP is blocked see here, and that's the one that twice was used to vandalise Esteban Cambiasso earlier today. Nor is this current IP blocked see here and by the fact that you posed this. Note that there are no blanket blocks, in fact because they are not tied to individuals anonymous IP edits tend to get only short blocks to stop the behaviour at that time only. Sometimes I've seen these accounts vandalise dozens of articles before we can temporarily block them, think of the damage they can do. We always recommend anyone who wants to contribute create an account, this is even more important if you use a shared network to avoid being tainted with the actions of others. You do not even need an email address, although it only serves to help notify the user, so privacy is not an issue. To to answer "What is Wikipedia doing?" - Wikipedia is attempting to be the most open platform possible, but to safeguard the efforts of the vast majority has to put temporary blocks on anonymous IP addresses currently being used for vandalism. Without this they could destroy faster then we could repair, and that would be as you said "ridiculous and completely TOTALLY unfair". Anyone who wishes too contribute can via creating an account, and 99.99% of IP addresses can edit 'anonymously' at any point.   • Hi PayneJ1998, as the Golden rule states "Articles generally require significant coverage, in reliable sources, that are independent of the topic.". If no external reliable sources exist then it just means that the company is not "notable" in Wikipedia terms.   • Hi PBLfan well first off Other stuff exists is not considered a good reason around Wikipedia, and is far more likely to get the other article nominated for deletion than your one accepted. However even to start with your article did not clearly link any sources at all, and note that External links should not be used (yours had 2-ish). The other article was created some time ago and it would appear procedures are getting tighter here over time (I've relativity new at a couple of years). Lastly I tend to be more of an Inclusionist but many aren't and thus even for a nonprofit you need to have a minimum number of references. I have tidied up a bit to remove some of the problems but you really need to find some other external references for New Tech Network - the more you can add the more likely it will be approved, and references also make readers more likely to believe what's said (even if they don't check the sources themselves).   • Hi Kur Kerdirichi reliable sources don't have to be online source (although preferred as easier to verify) - however if they are unpublished I don't believe they can be used. I think in some cases such as old war letters copies have been uploaded to commons: however I don't think that it would be acceptable for contemporary letters as they could easily be made up. So to be totally honest I'm not sure - sorry. So I think for an answer on those letters you'll have to ask more experience editors in this area - I'd suggest either the Wikipedia:Teahouse or the Reliable sources/Noticeboard. Julius Caesar era format

You undid my edit, which undid an edit changing the era format with an edit summary that said "back to version pre ping-pong dates". The first recent edit I see that changed the era format is Special:Diff/675173964, which changed from "BC" to "BCE". Is there an earlier one I'm missing? If not, we should revert to "BC" per WP:ERA.

  • Hi KarenCivilPress sorry but I'm currently sick and drugged up so taking a break - however I see Onel5969 has already come back with some advise regarding the Inline citation requirement for Biographies of living persons which is a good thing to look at doing next. Note you can use the same reference in line at multiple places using reference names (see here). The more references the better for WP:BLP's. Message (Filigree)

Dear Kylie,

I decided to return to our talk and to tell you, that, because of your very helpful review, I realized, that my article is not really suitable for Wikipedia: recently I carefully studied all the rules, what made clear for me, that a personal admiration of the talents of artists is not enough reason for these persons to be in Wikipedia. Thanks for your friendly advice - I am on the way to the point, where I can start to call myself a real User. But before that, I need your advice again, if it's possible: as I like to read all Wikipedia materials about art, I found the article, called Filigree, and it was all fine in this article including all beautiful pictures, with the exception of one picture at the very end of the article, called Filigree silver earrings Mauro Cateb - Own work. For me this picture was not a pleasant surprise, because instead of filigree work you can see there a metal work, unrelated to filigree work completely. It can create confusion, as people are ready to see the information in Wikipedia as a very reliable one. So, my question is - how can I remove this image and explain why I did it not to upset a person, who uploaded it, as I am ready to explain, why this item is not a filigree work in a polite way?   • Hi Kur I wish more people were as understanding when it came to such things - many people have people/topics that they admire that haven't yet reach notability standards and want to add them. Often people get very upset and take it personally when articles are declined. You never know, maybe at some point later some more people will write about Jim Oliver and he'll meet notability.
Filigree is not an area I know about but I do agree with you that the last picture does not match the description in the lead section at all. As with all such edits the advise is to firstly Be bold (a key part to WP:BRD) - the second is to leave a clear Edit summary. If you removed with an edit summary explaining you do not believe it to be Filigree, and certainly not a good example, that would be clear and polite. If an editor disagreed they may revert and you can discuss on either the users talk page or the articles talk page. However, I would guess though this was added just because the file-name contained Filigree and not because the editor particularly wanted the image included - It's not their own image, and they have only edited the article once. Ohio maps

Please stop reverting me on Ohio map additions (example) — I'm in the middle of uploading maps for all Ohio communities (more than 2200 in total), and barring mistakes, the maps you're removing will exist. If one doesn't exist, I've made a mistake somewhere along the line (for example, with Milton Center, the file was misnamed at upload), and I need to be alerted: reverting leaves the article where it was, without the map, but alerting me will allow me to fix the problem.   • Hi Nyttend sorry for the confusion, but I was attempting to do what you've asked "alerting me will allow me to fix the problem", just a case of two different approaches to achieve the same goal. I reverted fully expecting you to fix the problems when notified by the revert notification. Also I had not seen your previous edit summaries such as here as they were not reverts or mentions. However I did make a mistake last night with [7] as I had meant to put a more specific comment rather than just one of my pre-defined comments - fingers working quicker than my brain going through the daily issues flagged on Category:Articles with missing files. I'll try to notice any more of these from your work and leave a friendly note on your talk page in future. I had looked at your uploads on commons the first couple of times as I thought they may have been typos, but didn't spot them as you have been very hard at work an uploaded a lot. However after seeing your fixes I kicked myself as I should have noticed them. On a side note as your working an Ohio I wonder if you'd look as this edit after yours on Athens, Ohio - it broke an image but I was not sure if the image filename should just be corrected or if the whole edit should be reverted - I'm not sure if the editors summary is correct or just their personal opinion?   • Ah, I'm sorry. I completely forgot that the Notifications thing, by default, notifies you when someone reverts you. I disabled that option as soon as it came out, because it makes it so easy to get into edit wars: it's much less tempting to edit-war with someone, and much less stressful, if you don't know that you got reverted :-) I wouldn't have noticed, except that Milton Center appears on Special:RecentChangesLinked for User:Nyttend/Ohio, which links all Ohio municipalities and townships that haven't yet gotten images: I check it frequently, hoping to notice any pages that got illustrated, so that I can discover if anyone's started adding hometown images and ask the "anyone" if he'd be willing to contribute more local images. Athens: I don't think that we need to. "Uptown" is also used elsewhere, e.g. one goes "uptown" from campus in Oxford, Ohio, but at least in Athens, it's also "downtown"; see Athens Downtown Historic District for example. I just edited the Athens article, and while I don't think file renaming would be appropriate (especially because it's the first word; one could say that it's just descriptive, "an image from downtown Athens", not a proper noun), since it doesn't meet any of the Commons renaming criteria, I didn't undo anything that the IP had done, except for putting back the filename. Title date is wrong on "Peeping Tom (1897 film)"

Hello Kylie Tastic,

I understand why you felt me changing the dates was not constructive to the page, but the date on that page is inaccurate. Peeping Tom directed by Ferdinand Zecca was made in 1901...not 1897. Ferdinand Zecca's first film was 1899 so he couldn't have made the film in 1897. Also nobody was making films with this kind of sophistication in their narrative editing in 1897. George Albert Smith has been cited as being the first director to use narrative editing in the film "The Kiss In The Tunnel" which was made in 1899. This 1897 date predates that cited film by 2 years. Zecca learned from Smith not the other way around. Smith's movies are not as sophisticated a Zecca's because Smith is discovering the technique for the first time in film history. Zecca expands on it as film technique advances. I wanted to change the title from "Peeping Tom (1897 film)" to "Peeping Tom (1901 film)" but couldn't figure out how to do it. If you want to verify my statement then go to Google and type in Peeping Tom Zecca and you will find sites that confirm that it was made in 1901. Also this movie is on a DVD box set called "Movies Begin". If you go to Google and type in Movies Begin the first listing is the kinolorber.com site which Kino Lorber is the company making that disc. Click on that site and the 4th disc is called Experimentation and Discovery and it lists "Peeping Tom (1901)".

Hopefully this can be changed by either you or someone else because the history's wrong in that title. It should be title "Peeping Tom (1901)".

Thanks for listen to me on this. I was hoping to be able to contact Wikipedia to get it corrected. That way I can link the 1901 film page to this title subject page and maybe add some more details to the page like the directors name (Ferdinand Zecca).

  • Hi 67.7.10.116 ok first off I see that you meant well by your edit so I will remove the warning. Also I'm not doubting that a film called Peeping Tom (or similar) directed by Ferdinand Zecca was made in 1901. However I'm not sure why you think Peeping Tom (1897 film) relates to the Ferdinand Zecca film. You state "Zecca learned from Smith" and that Zecca film was 1901, and the IMDB link on Peeping Tom (1897 film) says it was made by George Albert Smith in 1897, and a comment states "Ferdinand Zecca made a more elaborate version of it in 1901, with almost no change save a more elaborate ending.". This also matches the YouTube video info here. So as far as I can tell from both what you have said and the sources that Peeping Tom (1897 film) is the George Albert Smith (film pioneer) film and currently Wikipedia does not have an article for the Ferdinand Zecca version in 1901. In fact I just found "Par le trou de la serrure" (Through the keyhole?) is also on YouTube here but they do actually appear to be the same. The only other thing you say is that the date of Smiths version seams early as before "The Kiss In The Tunnel" which was made in 1899, however that appears to be based on a judgement of technique - and this is not an area I have a clue about!
However in the it comes down to the Golden rule and reliable sources - (in theory) all information added to articles should be verifiable from sources, and no Original research. It appears you agree "Zecca learned from Smith", and I think we can agree a film (probably called "Par le trou de la serrure" rather than "Peeping Tom") was made by Ferdinand Zecca was made in 1901. I think you either think Smiths version did not exist, or was just later than 1897 but in either case a source would be needed to back that up.
In summary as far as I can tell this is two different issues:

  • Hi Aks23121990, at first I noticed the edit due to it causing errors on the page (breaking an image, multiple wiki-links, and editing a reference url). 'Fixing' grammar, spelling, typos, etc without looking at the context can cause lots of problems. Wikipedia articles are not just plain text, and things such as markup, file-names, linked article names, reference urls cannot just be changed. As such you need to be more careful when 'fixing' things.
  • Secondly is the wider 'context': where the article refers to something that may have grammar, spelling, typos, etc. for example I have come across paintings, music works, book title, place names, etc that have these errors in them in 'real-life' - so if for instance a book has a grammar/spelling issue in it then that is still its title and must not be corrected. If an American came across your name should they "fix the date format" and call you User:Aks12231990? A name/title etc is what it is and should not be 'fixed'.
  • In this case as per the article title it appears to be "Pseudobulbar affect" not "Pseudobulbar effect" - look at the sources. If you Google "Pseudobulbar effect" it asks "Did you mean: 'Pseudobulbar affect'". Also one of the links you broke was to Affect (psychology) (its not Effect (psychology)) - this along with the article title and the sources should have made you stop and wonder why? I believe that in psychology (and possibly some other medical fields) affect is used for a reason I do not know. If someone is diagnosed with "Pseudobulbar affect" or PBA, it really is not going to be helpful if someone has 'fixed' the grammar to "Pseudobulbar effect" and PBE.
  • In short "Pseudobulbar affect" (PBA) appears to be the correct term on its own and thus you cannot just break it up and assert grammatically rules on it.

Also I see that Editorofthewiki had reverted your previous attempt for the same reason. This is why Wikipedia has a policy on Conflict of interest as although not completely banned, writing with a COI is discouraged as even with the best intentions its difficult to be Neutral. (Note the links are to the relevant Wikipedia policies). There were also other problems caused by you also being a new editor such as random <gallery> tags; trying to hot-link external images; inline External links; duplication of content; and a big problem being lack of References for any of the additions. Another key principle to be aware of is the Wikipedia:Five pillars. As for the promotional aspect of your edits they were written like a marketing piece for promote the book. Phrases like "a stunning example", "A natural athlete", "extreme lifestyle", "horrific crash", "But even Shermer’s Neck wouldn’t stop Leah" and not neutral or Encyclopedic. So I would recommend not trying to add such material back in. If however you have simple factual additions or correction, such as results since 2009 to bring things up to date that would be ok (but due to the noted COI other could disagree) - but for instance results should be as per the existing years, list of results not embellished - note content with references may be removed buy others see Help:Referencing for beginners for how to add a reference. Also If you want to add an image it must be uploaded WP:UPIMAGE (copyright allowing). Hope that helps explain things a bit.   • Hi 178.167.254.106 images can only be used on Wikipedia, whether on Articles or other pages such as user pages, if they are uploaded WP:UPIMAGE either to English Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. For both you need an account, and locally you need to have been registered for four days and made 10+ edits. However apart from some "fair use" cases the images must by copyright free (either public domain, has never been copyrighted, or is licensed under an open licence such as Creative Commons CC-BY or similar). In this case although there is no obvious copyright claim, there is no free license statement so they will be treated as copyrighted by commons. If you actually own the copyright you have to email in with the required information to 'prove' you didnt just steal it from a website etc. See Commons:OTRS for details. Hope that helps.   • Hi Mgmcs, I'm sorry that you haven't found Wikipedia friendly to you - but you have been answered in a friendly way when you asked before, maybe you did not see the answers? Also you have said you want to add to Olly olly oxen free but you keep trying to create a new article? Are you actually trying to create or add? You first asked at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Help desk here and got an answer with several options. You then asked at the Wikipedia:Help desk here and have another answer. As this second answer points out:
"Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a translation service - so simply adding "In French, the phrase is XXXX" is not appropriate. If you have a reliably published source that discusses how the French phrase has been influenced by or influenced the English phrase, then that type of content can be added."
I did a quick Google search and found no hits for "allez allez aux hommes" so this does not look like a valid thing.

i followed your suggestions but i'm afraid i am still confused. yes, you have been very friendly but i still don't know how to include my suggestion for that page. i understand wikipedia is not a translation service. when i started this there were 2 references in the olly olly oxen free page that the phrase may have come from other languages: 1. [citation needed] All-y all-y in come free is phoenetically very similar to the Dutch phrase " Alle Alle inkom vrij" (Everyone is allowed in free/ all free entrance) 2. There is also some speculation[attribution needed] that the phrase originates from the German phrase "alle alle auch sind frei", which loosely translated means "everyone is also free". Mispronunciation of this by non-German children resulted in the current "olly olly oxen free".[citation needed]

  • Hi Mgmcs you can see who changed an article by looking at the "View History" for the pages, and see the Edit summaries for why. In this case it was TheRedPenOfDoom doing a tidy up probably because of the questions you have asked and they answered. This often happens when you start working on and talking about an article... other editors notice and will join in. You may be correct that "allez, allez aux hommes" is related, but often these links between phrases are lost over time and can't be shown to be true. The same goes for the Dutch and German versions. I can believe they are all linked. However, it may just be a coincidence hence why Wikipedia requires sources. I know its frustrating but it is a problem that most Wikipedians run into that if you can't find a source then it shouldn't be added. I have had several things I could not add for lack of a source, and also no been able to add images because I could not locate a copyright free one. So you can continue to try to find a source, or just decide to leave this one and find some other articles you can improve.   • Hi Kur Kerdirichi glad you had an interesting trip. If you have taken pictures yourself then commons: is always the best place for them. Just use the upoad file link on the left hand menu to the Upload Wizard to add them. You can then use the images direct of English Wikipedia (or any other language) directly with no other extra mark-up. Each language Wikipedia can use there own local images and those on commons. You are also already able to add images locally as I notice you have already discovered as your question here and then at the teahouse completed your 10 edits. Route markers

Hi KylieTastic. In the future, if you come across missing route markers such as you did at List of road routes in Victoria (numeric) ([11]), would you be able to request them at WP:HWY/RM? That way the missing images can be noticed and created, rather than the article potentially languishing without them unless someone like myself happens to be watchlisting it.   • Hi Evad as you can see from the WP:HWY/RM history I usually do this, or create myself. However in the past a lot of the non standard markers such as alternate/historical have been problematic to source so I made a judgement call to comment out, and had meant to then post to WP:HWY/RM with the diff to revert the removals if someone was going to create. I then got distracted, and forgot - oops! Sorry about that. Also I was being a bit lazy as I should be off to work and didn't actually look up the markers myself to see if they would be easy to make, which they would have been! Hello,

I was hired by Krystin Goodwin to create a Wikipedia page for her. She works for USA Today, Huffington Post, AOL, etc... but all the information I have for the page comes from her directly and her IMDB page. I was told in the chat room that as those sources aren't "reliable," I can't possibly create a page for this journalist, at least as a "notable" person. Is there any other category I can place her page into? Would I be able to cite her work with USA Today, HuffPo, etc?

  • Hi RGunz, there are a few issues here but the all revolve around What Wikipedia Is and What Wikipedia is not. Primarily it's an Encyclopedia and not a place for promotion. Also by your own statement here you have a Conflict of interest and thus very strongly discouraged from editing affected articles. As for the actual questions the same rules apply for Notability and reliable sources - so she would have to have done something of note for USA Today, HuffPo, etc. These articles do not have a list of all the journalists that have or do work for them. Most people are not notable, and I would guess most journalists aren't as their job is to write about others and not to be written about.   • Hi Writerlauren I'm actually new to reviewing articles and for the moment just picking up easy accepts/declines so I'm no expert. However in this case I would say that the main problem is four of the sources don't appear to mention Innotech and the last one is from their own website. So it breaks the Golden rule badly. Also the article appears to be more about Laser printing (that already exists) than Innotech Laser, so it basically needs more about Innotech_Laser to be found/referenced. Notability is the general standard by which all articles are judged to stop there being an article about everything and everybody in the world.   • Hi Caliboyx70, all I did was revert this edit which had no edit summary that caused an error (click the link and you'll see the big red error in the infobox). That was back on the 3rd September, and I see a lot has moved on from then. I see other editors have questioned the DOB: Stabila711 said "Removed birth date. Conflicting sources on birth year (some say 1975, others say 1979)" which was removing 1980 that you entered, and Dbfirs said "Removed dubious birth year" in the last edit. The links you give are not really reliable sources as they tend to just gather dates from any source including each other. I see his twitter link to http://samsarpong.com but the site does not work so can't tell it he has an official bio up.   • Hi Sriram.19 on the plus side that is a lot of references, however I don't have the time today to look into them as I need to be off to work soon. A comment I would make is that its not easy to associate a list of references like that to the text. They really should be Inline citations especially as the article would be classified as a Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. If you want more help/advise before re-submitting I would suggest the Wikipedia Teahouse as lots of experienced editors answer questions and you don't have the problem of individuals being to busy to help. Tribute to my friend

I see that you declined the article I submitted about Gaige Robbins, my 19 year old friend who lost his battle with cancer last month. I would like to know why. His attitude throughout his long fight made him famous not only throughout his community but throughout the entire world. He gained supporters from places from as far as Tokyo, which is obviously a long ways from Melbourne, FL. If you knew a little about his story, maybe you would've thought twice before your decision in declining it. Please read his story and then decide again if you should've declined it.

  • Hi 71.47.201.29 firstly sorry for your loss - its a tough thing to watch someone die of cancer, and even worse at a young age. The reason the article for declined was because Wikipedia only accepts articles that pass Notability and the Golden rule. This is not a judgement on how important the subject is - for instance many charities doing important work do not pass Notability as they do it without publicity. In this case your article was totally un-referenced which would be accepted by no reviewer - however as you've shown above they do exist so you could add them. Most importantly an AFC decline is not a rejection of the article outright only of the version submitted. So it's possible if you add references to the article and re-submit that it would be accepted, but I haven't had time to look deeper at the links as I'm at work. I just wanted to reply quickly due to the sensitive nature - If you want further advise from friendly experienced editors I would suggest asking for advice at the Wikipedia Teahouse. What's up with Category:Pages using infoboxes with thumbnail images?

You have Category:Pages using infoboxes with thumbnail images listed under things you're doing on Wikipedia on your user page. I didn't even know it was possible to wedge the thumb parameter into an infobox template... and what would be the point? The template resizes images to fit in the infobox anyway. On the other hand, is it actually a problem for someone to put the thumb parameter in an infobox image? Does it cause display issues? I'm just curious about this as I like adding infoboxes and infobox images to articles when I can, and want to make sure I'm doing it right. Plus if I understand the problem, I can fix instances of it I come across. P.S.   • Hi GrammarFascist unfortunately as you can see by the ~6000 entries it is possible and done often enough! It's usually done only because new users don't understand the infobox parameters. It's not a big problem, but I think it's ugly (and I think its mentioned in a policy as being discouraged). So I have a link to the category and sometimes have a bash as fixing up a few, however it takes a low priority compared to most of the other things I work on. It's usually something I only do when I just don't want to deal with vandals, or things that require more thought. It means no more to readers that "A piece of paper on my desk". So yes we definitely accept all major newspapers as good sources but they have to be cited properly. Also to make it clear a decline for Notability reasons is not that the subject is not notable, just that the version of the article does not yet demonstrate it. So, to accept a newspaper reference (A recognized newspaper, etc.) WHat am I supposed to do with copies of a fairly long, detailed articles about Delton Hudson and his music? It has to be turned into something with a URL? I would have to scan it on my printer, then save it into my computer, then what? Upload the article to Wikipedia--I don't thing that is right, since in the guidelines it looks as though readers just have to have a way of clicking on a URL to access it ?   • Hi Lorzendel2 just a quick answer as I'm still at work - No not all references have to be online, although these are preferred as they can more easily be checked or used by users who just want to read more. Also although it would be nice to upload scanned copies for people to read unless very old documents these normally could not be uploaded legally due to copyright. The essential point is to give enough information that if someone had access to a good library that they could locate text if its from newspapers, books, journals etc. So say for your "Copy of Denver Post article held by D.L. Hudson" the missing information would be the date and page. See References not online and Citation quick reference which recommends using {{cite news}}. If your using the the normal editor (not the new visual one) you should see a "Cite" option on the right of the toolbar above the edit area - click this and you get the cite toolbar - you have a drop down list of citation types that will given you a form to fill in rather than having to use the templates directly which I know can be confusing to new users. However if it is all to confusing just add all the information so others could fix up the formal style later i.e. for example add something like: <ref>Denver Post Newspaper - 3rd October 2015 - page 99 - "Article title ...."</ref>. I'm glad my example was clear, but I'm afraid I don't know the answer about the best way to handle letters or similar items. Assuming there are no copyright or other legal issues they could be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons as they host all media and then easily referenced. I've come across old war letters being uploaded before but I'm not sure if its an issue if the people are still alive? I'm afraid you'll have to ask someone with more knowledge on this one (been doing this 2 years but still lots to learn) - I'd suggest asking at the Wikipedia:Teahouse - a number of long time editors and admins answer questions there so they should hopefully know the answer.   • Hi 98.159.211.11 don't worry we understand that IP addresses are often shared so your personal reputation is not sullied - just the IPs . Also although joke submissions to Articles for creation waste a couple of minutes it's not anything bad (like vandalism, abuse, etc) hopefully it will be a one off anyway. Randy Ryan page?

This is probably a little misunderstanding about this "Randy Ryan" page but... The original page was 'Randy ryan', however with the last name not capitalized I moved it to a proper title of 'Randy Ryan' and added a link so that it could be verified as a real person and wouldn't be deleted. I guess the author reinstated the article I originally moved (since they seem they might have not gotten the jist of Wikipedia's basics or known the reason why I moved the page).   • Hi Adog104, it took me a while to catch on but I see what happened now - Twinkle posted the notice on your page rather than on the creators! Sorry about that, yes I was just marking the Randy ryan copy for speedy deletion. As for your second question, yes you can remove messages from your own talk page if there was an error, or if a situation has been dealt with. In fact the only times I believe its not allowed to deleted from your own page is if its disruptive or dishonest: such as removing vandalism warnings to avoid the escalation process, or editing other editors comments to say things they didn't say.   • Hi 62.205.136.148 if not copyrighted then it could be uploaded to Commons, otherwise it would have to be hosted on another website. Also as anyone can create a document it may not be believed as such documents would often already be available from another source. However the issue with the article is not proving it's rank - its about showing notability which is different from importance or rank. As per the Wikipedia:Golden rule "Articles generally require significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the topic." KylieTastic (talk) 18:56, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Systems Engineering

I am Cherdchai Iamwongsrikul, and I have some suggestions that I would like you to review.

I would like to suggest that the term "Systems Engineering" is ungrammatical. And the grammatical term should be "System Engineering".

In case there are two noun words, the first noun gives more detail to the following noun. And the first noun must be in "Singular form".

Let's think about these questions.

How do you call a kind of business which washes, cleanses, and waxes customers' automobiles ? - Car care business OR - Cars care business ? Car care business is the correct one.

How do you call the making use of illegal labor of many children ? - Child labor OR - Children labor ? Child labor is the correct one.

How do you call a kind of brush which usually people use this kind of brushes to brush not just one tooth but many teeth ? - Tooth brush OR - Teeth brush ? Tooth brush is the correct one. Note: Tooth(singular), Teeth(plural)

How do you call a kind of paste which usually is used not just for brushing a tooth but for brushing many teeth ? - Toothbrush OR - Teethbrush ? Toothbrush is the correct one.

How do you call a place especially made for parking many cars ? (Not just for 1 car to be parked) - Car park OR - Cars park ? Car park is the correct one. We can see that even the place is used for parking many cars, it is still called "car park", not "cars park".

As the word "system" is singular and the word "systems" is plural, the grammatically correct term should be "system engineering".

Finally, if you have any suggestion I am willing and ready to look into it.

  • Hi Cherdchai Iamwongsrikul, Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia based on what is available from reliable sources - many things in the world are not spelt 'correctly' or follow the 'correct' grammatical rules.
  • If you actually looked at the sources you would see it is known as "Systems engineering". Maybe you want to tell NASA and the DOD that they are wrong?
  • You examples such as car park does not work as you park your car (singular) in a car park; similarly child labour is about it being wrong for a single child to do child labour; but "systems engineering" is not the collection/plural of doing system engineering, but engineering on "systems" as a singular entity. It is to engineer a solution with regard to a group of systems, not a singular system.
  • You also blindly changed "Systems engineering" to "System engineering" breaking reference urls, images, the actual names of books, wiki links, etc leaving an awful mess.
So even if you were correct you would still be wrong on all these points: a url is what is it, so is a book name, or image name, or wiki link name etc
  • In you previous edits you changed other peoples comments on the talk page. You should not change other peoples comments on any talk pages. It is considered highly rude in general - plus in this case makes it look like others agree with you when they did not.
  • You also did the same to International Property Rights Index with these edits - without looking at the source: http://internationalpropertyrightsindex.org - again maybe you would care to tell the international organisation they are wrong?
  • Others do the same such as earlier History of Cleveland was changed to 'correct' a spelling error - but they were wrong! The place is called Cleveland but the guy is called Moses Cleaveland
In summary don't apply your own grammatical ideas to established topics, and never do a search/replace without looking at the context of each.   • Hi Mortgage loans yes I agree it looks like respected organisations do re-publish LifeComps data, however I cannot see any that write about it as required by WP:Notability and the golden rule. A decline does not mean the article topic is not important just that it does not meet the WP:Notability standard that Wikipedia uses. As such it look like the data is considered useful, but not to a degree anyone has decided to write about it. Without reliable sources to show notability it would be more promotional that encyclopaedic. As organisations/publications do appear to be using the data hopefully at some point they may write the odd piece on the company/index at which point the article could be created. However as I see they have been around since 2003 it could be that the sources already exist but just not easy to find - the way search engines work would mean that all the links to big organisations/publications just using the data now would probably swamp out the odd little article in the past, so you may want to just send time digging. It seems like you removed a link to a deleted file[12] which had been deleted WP:CSD#F1 because it was redundant to another file.[13] It would have been far better to have changed the link to the "duplicate" file File:Hydrogen bond arrangements in Schellman loops.pdf particularly because this later file was then sent to FFD as being "unused", Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2015 October 25#File:Hydrogen bond arrangements in Schellman loops.pdf Best wishes.     • Yes, cheers. My reading of WP:CSD#F1 is that only unused files should be speedied but it's possible to read it as allowing used poorer quality files to be deleted.   • Hi Thincat I agree that WP:CSD#F1 states it is for unused and thus I would think should not have been used without first changing the uses of the image so it becomes unused. It's my understanding that this is what more normally happens as it both improves articles and keeps things tidy. Luckily its not something I come across that often but it does happen now and then - unfortunately as we now have bots (Filedelinkerbot & CommonsDelinker) that delink most deleted images they would not catch this (I don't think they do anyway) - although they could be asked to check for it. You could also message RHaworth as he deleted this image to see if they would normally fix up articles and this was just an over-site this time? I just opened Wikipedia this morning (IST) to read about something and this message popped up -

I wish to clarify that I have not made any changes to the said page and I hardly ever edit Wikipedia. On the internet, IP addresses are usually hopping from one person to the other and so I guess its a bug if such errors are shown to random people visiting the site (without logging in)

Let me know your views on this and I'd be willing to share any more information required to clarify this issue further.

Those edits were a long time ago so no one would have associated with you. Its unfortunate that new users get the shock of warnings for edits they didn't make. Even though your now logged in and thus would not see that page again I have still removed the warnings as its clear the IP have been re-assigned. From the report here for reason "Recreation of a page that was deleted per a deletion discussion (CSDH))" however as it does not link to the specific deletion discussion I can't help you with the original reason. However it does look a bit odd as the deletion log only shows this deletion, not any previous one. If you want to get more information you'll have to ask [[User::Foxj]] who actually deleted the file. Re: your Frank Stanford edits and deletions. Your actions constitute vandalism. In fact, I am the copyright holder and the photographer of the photo you deleted of his grave. I took the photo myself on October 13, 1998 at his grave at St. Benedict's Cemetery at Subiaco, AR; I also personally scanned it and uploaded it to Wikipedia. Save your scorched earth editing for trivial pages and meaningless subjects. The Frank Stanford page is meticulously researched and scrupulously coded, in large part by me and I and others don't appreciate vandals such as yourself who flagrantly violate Wikipedia codes of conduct to advance a personal agenda that does not come close to overriding the consensus reached on Frank Stanford content by myself and pothers knowledgeable on the subject who created the page.   • Hi Ozarkhighlands before accusing people of vandalism you should check your facts first. Your list of false accusations shows that in contradiction to your claim that you do not understand the "Wikipedia codes of conduct". I suggest you read Wikipedia:Civility and Wikipedia:Vandalism for a start. Now onto your points....
  • "your Frank Stanford edits and deletions" - I've made 1 edit only on that page and as per my edit summary it was to revert your reversion of the ImageRemovalBot edits thus adding back the already deleted images. This just meant you added red-linked error messages back to the article. You appear to have made no effort to reinstate the images, and failed to give an edit summary with your reversals.
  • "Your actions constitute vandalism" - I doubt you can find any admin or experienced editor that would think removing invalid links to previously deleted images giving a hint to the correct action (aka re-upload or restored by OTRS first) could be called vandalism.
  • "In fact, I am the copyright holder...." - Good then you should either re-upload, msg the deleting admin, or use another of the official routes to reinstate the image.
  • "Save your scorched earth editing for trivial pages and meaningless subjects." - Is this just random abuse? Personally I try to treat all pages with the same respect be they subjects I love or subjects I personally believe to be no interest. I believe the integrity of the project comes first. This type of edit is rare compared to most of what I do reverting real vandalism, reverting accidental image breaking, and valid image removal.
  • "vandals such as yourself who flagrantly violate Wikipedia codes of conduct" - name one? I can state WP:REDNOT for my edit which includes "Do not create red links to files"
  • "Marking a photo for deletion that should not have been deleted proves you are a vandal"
  • Firstly wrong again, I did not mark the files for deletion, in over 75,000 edits across the Wikipedia projects I believe I've marked less than 2-dozen for deletion, most for fragrant copyright violations.
  • Secondly, just marking a file is not vandalism and if it was flagrant bad faith flagging the user would be cautioned by the admins and the file not deleted (as these were)
  • Thirdly you have a message on your own talk page from Kelly informing you File:FrankStanford St. Benedict sCemetery.jpg was marked for deletion and why - not the action of a vandal. As I cannot see the original page I can only guess that this may have just been a technicality with the licence information you gave. English Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons take copyright very seriously.
  • The other file, that as you had no notification I assume you did not upload, was File:Emery Memorial Home.jpg and was deleted as "No evidence of permission for more than 7 days" and as per your file was deleted by the admin Explicit
  • However after saying all this I will assume good faith and this post was just out of frustration, maybe just have a bad day. So as I really do think the good, relevant images are important to articles I encourage you, as you say you are the copyright holder, to either upload again with as much detail as you have for the licence, or possibly contact Explicit as the deleting admin, or you could ask at the OTRS noticeboard. Suggesting additional information regarding this entry. Since she had gender reassignment surgery, should pronouns "his, he and him" be used in discussing Taylor? This separation of pronoun within the timeline is important in the identification of this person, especially as a proclaimed advocate of the transgender community.

  • Hi Juliealyssa and welcome to Wikipedia - it's not really a subject I am familiar with my edit being the last on Taylor Lianne Chandler was just maintenance. I'm not aware of any policy on this type of thing - I can only suggest asking at the Wikipedia:Teahouse were lots of experienced editors hang out. Hopefully someone knows of a policy and or wiki project for this type of question.
I think the term "legend" is a bit Wikipuffery for me, but the linked source does use the word
Lastly I'm not sure what your asking on the alleged boyfriend issue? Normally I would say such items should not be included - however it appears to be one reason she "gained attention" thus is substantive to her Notability rather than just rumour or gossip.
As I said I'm not familiar with the subject so recommend either the Wikipedia:Teahouse, or start a discussion on the articles talk page or if you think these are concerns that violate the Biographies of living persons policy than you could post to the BLP/Noticeboard.   • Hi Jamielewist sorry for the delay but been at work with no time to answer. If you want to create a new page then it's recommend to create either in your own user area, own sandbox, or the draft area. This is especially important for new users as otherwise you can end up with the page being deleted for violation of one of the many policies. i.e just as you did for for AfC submission User:Jamielewist/sandbox/Jamie_Lewis which was declined as it was a statement more for your user page User:Jamielewist than it was an article. On to your question where to start?
  • First I would say do The Wikipedia Adventure - which you've done so checkY
  • Look around for small changes you can make to existing articles. I would normally suggest subjects your interested in, or the 'Random Article' on the left hand menu. However as you want to "create a page on an artist a colour or typography" I would suggest looking at those that already exist. Maybe find one that has a good structure to base a new one on.
  • I would think there are more missing articles on artists than colours or typography, however note that if the artist is alive you'll need to be aware of Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons
  • I would highly recommend either do as you did for User:Jamielewist/sandbox/Jamie_Lewis or use the Article wizard to start a new article.
  • Lastly if you have any other questions or want advise on editing you can ask at the Wikipedia:Teahouse where lots of friendly experienced editors help out, no having to wait for individuals to get off work ;)

How PAW Patrol won the West

Hello and thank you for reverting various film articles after unhelpful updates by dynamic IP 67.44.*. With the date changes, good-faith copyvio from IMDB and fantasy plot rewrites, this kid is keeping a few of us busy! I see Rio Conchos (film) is now protected. Is there anything more we should do to deter this pest?

Here's a probably incomplete list of damage in case it helps. I've not provided diffs, as most changes span several edits and are repeated from a different IP after reversion.

  • Hi Certes I had hoped that little pest had got the idea after they had been blocked several times and then I got Rio Conchos (film) blocked. Didn't notice them back as maybe they hadn't made the same mistakes as before that made me notice them. I've been fighting an even more pernicious vandal using large chunks of 2.24.* and 2.27.* vandalising transport articles - even had a block on a few thousand IP's for a while due their persistence. With more of these cases and the trouble IPv6 users can cause I'm starting to think they are going to have to block anon editing eventually.   • Hi M1wok, the problem is your article has no sources and as per the Wikipedia:Golden rule "Articles generally require significant coverage, in reliable sources, that are independent of the topic.". Schools come under the Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) policy. You should find some sources and I was about to add the schools own website at least - which I see you have already done. If you can find any other references such as local news articles, or if the scool is listed on any official government site etc that would help.   • Hi 62.228.62.32 the reason why it looked non-constructive was no reason (edit summary) was given for the change. So without knowing the context to others it looked the same as say you changing "Lefkoşa" to "HELLO". We unfortunately get a lot of random vandalising like that. As the page did not even mention Nicosia as another name the reason was not obvious, however as it's clear you were not being un-constructive I will remove the invalid warning. However as for the name change, you'll need to provide a source for what you say. The given source for the Census 2006 lists "Lefkoşa District". Up till you posted this I didn't even know there was a self-declared state of Northern Cyprus - but just as we have the article on Northern Cyprus we also have the main Cyprus article. Similarly we have Nicosia which covers the governance, as well as Lefkoşa District. Just as you see it as "an offense" I guess the people on the other side of the dispute see it the other way. As such Lefkoşa District is a valid encyclopedic entry, however it does appear odd that Lefkoşa District does not make the disputed status clear.   • Hi Ruthie I'm no expert on this I just try to help out at AFC and accept/decline the obvious (such as no references). Vogue I would believe would be considered a good source, however it does not really say that much about them. Also I followed the link to the facebook account and 385 likes does not help (not that popularity = notability). The cdbaby.com link is a reference for the information it contains, but is does not really help for notability as these days its easy for anyone to make albums, write books etc and get listed on such sites (but all valid references are still good to add to the article). As for soundofbrit.fr my french is not great, but English Wikipedia does not require sources to be in English - however it looks like a good source with a lot of information. Lastly although discogs.com goes to show his link with UNKLE, it does only list him as bass on one track so rather than "... part of the band UNKLE..." he just looks like a session musician from that link.
  • So firstly I definitely think you should add the first three references, and use Help:Referencing for beginners to add them as inline references. Look around for more online references would help, but you can also reference print media if any news papers or magazines have written articles about him (see References not online section). You could also ask for more help/advise than I can give by asking at the Wikipedia:Teahouse where lots of experienced editors answer questions and sometimes help more directly. You can then decide to either decide to submit again and get more feedback, or if you think you havn't managed to meet Wikipedia:Notability (music) then maybe just a bit of time is all that is needed.   • Hi BeaufortPatrick I had assumed the intent was all information was included in the Obituaries section but it is far from clear. I guess maybe not all of the obituaries are not online, but I'm assuming you had copies to work from otherwise. Thus a big improvement would be to improve the obituaries listed as references. Firstly for those that do not know the publications the refs would be difficult to follow, if you use the ref toolbar or Template:Cite news (or cite web) directly you could add the url and page numbers and any other helpful details. Secondly if you <ref name="">... </ref> tags with names you can add inline links to show which items come from which sources (see Help:Referencing_for_beginners#Same_reference_used_more_than_once and Wikipedia:Inline citation). Obviously its easier for people to verify online links when they exist and that would help get the article accepted more easily, however its certainly not mandatory. I've not got the time to be more helpful at the moment but I have added an example ref to The Scotsman link to give you an idea of a ref and using it in more than one place (you may wish to add <ref name=scotsman.com" /> to other points).   • Hi 98.25.9.242 and Schemel - Yes there is a way to try to stop repeated vandalism by IP users by submitting a request to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. However as semi protecting the article would block all anonymous edits its usually only added for a short time. However in this case I'm not sure its vandalism per se rather than a a difference of opinion as both versions are unsourced. As such it would be best to find more sources as then edits removing sourced material would be reverted by more editors as non-constructive/vandalism.   • Hi Schemel, I see they have chosen to not block ip editors but put the article requiring review - as such yes the ip editor may continue but it will be listed at Special:PendingChanges until someone with the relevant permissions accepts or reverts. So their edits are now being effectively watched by a lot of people so if they persist they will end up blocked. Unfortunately this sort of thing is the price we pay for the Anyone can edit) policy. As least they are not ip swapping every few edits like two other persistent vandals I'm tracking. So my advise is keep an eye on them; report any other targeted articles to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection if needed, but most of all don't let them wind you up. I know that can be difficult, but it's best to walk away from a problem user and continue to be a constructive editor another day than to let the tiny minority of problem editors wind you up and possibly drive you away. Draft Data Excellence rejected.

Hello KylieTastic ! My article was rejected but I do not understand why?

This is the two cases what I understood: 1.This is the style of writing because you say: it is not an item worthy of an encyclopedia 2. Do I have edit my article in the wrong area ? Do I have write it in the sandbox ? If this case, i will remove my draft in the sandbox ?

  • Hi Yanniyolo the Articles for creation procedure is for submitting encyclopaedic articles, where the text you submitted was just a statement of who you are, etc. This would normally go on your user page User:Yanniyolo, and within a few restrictions you can put what you want on your User pages and they do not have to be submitted or accepted. This goes for all of your pages including your sandbox, which can be used to make test edits, or write new articles - so you are welcome to write there, its your area. Personal sandbox pages usually have the template {{User sandbox}} at the top that gives you the button to easily submit articles if that's what they contain.
  • So if this was meant as just a page to introduce yourself and what you would like to do on Wikipedia then you can just move/copy to User:Yanniyolo (just like I have mine User:KylieTastic)
  • However for an article to be accepted for the mainspace see the following articles:

EDIT: Sorry I got confused I thought you were talking about the article User:Yanniyolo/sandbox that I declined you mean Draft:Data Excellence which has not been declined, but it was moved from User:Yanniyolo/sandbox/Data Excellence by another editor. This article has not yet been reviewed and it looks well formatted and has a number of references, so someone willl get arround to reading, checking and reviewing soon enough. Note we currently have 325 article in the queue so how long it takes will depend on how many people are reviewing - Its a busy time of year for many.   • Hi Toniaesposito76 happy to have helped. Sorry I'm currently a bit busy with work for the next few days so not really got the time to look at it the moment. It's a long article with a lot of references, and although that makes it a longer job to review it's a good thing to have a well referenced submission. A quick look makes it look like it should pass notability which is also an important thing. The only problem I noticed is the in-line external links; generally external links are only allowed in the reference, external links sections at the bottom (or in the infobox) not in-line in the article text. The reason is people (readers) don't expect to go to another site from links in the text. All in-line links should be Wikilinks and external links as references. Apart from that it's looking good. I would suggest you tidy these up first, but then you can either submit for review (lots more editors review with much more experience than me), or ask for more advise at the Wikipedia Teahouse where lots of experienced editors and admins hang out. On that last point I am not an admin here - so thanks for the barnstar but I had to remove so as not to make others think I was. All the best KylieTastic (talk) 15:42, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

  • Hi JessBant I see your talking about List of hairstyles - no I'm not a hairstylist, my edit was purely maintenance (reverting an invalid attempt to use an external image). Be careful when doing such large changes, especially until you understand the wiki-markup. For instance you changed a valid link to Afro-textured hair to an invalid link natural ethnic. Also note that such things could be a mater of opinion, or local usage (English Wikipedia is for all English speaking countries). Another error you introduced was changing [[Temple Fade (hairstyle)|Blowout]] to [[ (hairstyle)|Blowout]] - the double square brackets are Wikilinks (links to other articles), if it contains a pipe | then the first part if the article (the one you changed from Temple Fade (hairstyle) to invlid (hairstyle) the second part is what is displayed. So it still shows Blowout, but the link is now broken (it was Blowout). Regards KylieTastic (talk) 19:39, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

I then made a couple more edits and was just looking to see myself if the speedy was still valid as they had added content when you got there before me. I understand why you removed the image path from the infobox in the

  • Hi Endo999 it looks like the image was upldoaed to the French Wikipedia. Images can only be used on each language Wikipedia in on there own language or uploaded to commons. My French is not that good, but I believe the red tag on that image says that it its not suitable for transferring to commons. I would guess because of the French laws on pictures of buildings. I don't know if it would be allowable to upload on English Wikipedia, if you wanted to upload to English Wikipedia I would ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions for help. Antirom

I'm not blind, I just hadn't realised the image had been deleated....I've corrected the link so it's visible. must say I'm confused as why so much effort has been made to get rid of it as the image is only there to illustrate the article and is of no monetary value but is of historical interest being the only image of the full lineup of the original team, you'd have thought wiki moderators would have bigger fish to fry.

  • Hi Synthiaks yup sorry about that edit comment just let frustration with the real problem users spill over, which is totally unacceptable, so again sorry. I'm not sure why the original was deleted as only admins can see info on files after they are deleted and the reason "Violates non-free use policy" can be very open to opinion. I'm had enough troubles on the other side of that argument with my files being deleted. As for "so much effort" its not really - its just the combination of individuals doing different bits of work. The first would be someone who reviews uploads, the second an admin going though flagged files, then a bot kicked in and removed the dead link, and on my part I review Category:Articles with missing files to try to spot various issues from vandalism; editors correcting text in file names and breaking them; attempts to hot-link images etc. So I just noticed yours in passing the hundreds I review each week. As for "bigger fish to fry", copyright is a very important issue as if Wikipedia did not take it very serious they could have serious legal issues compromising the project. Yours would have been just one in probably several hundred removed each week. Hopefully they will let your new image stand, I had a quick look and you've done a good job with the info added, but as I said it comes done to a matter of opinion.   • Hi Synthiaks, often the copyright holders do not mind an image being used but the problem is, apart from the fair use of Non-free content, if an image is used outside of this then Wikipedia needs to be granted full permission rather than just permission to use. The reason is people expect to be able to take anything from Wikipedia and use copyright free. So you have two options use as you are as Non-free content, or if they want to get the copyright holder to release permission via OTRS see: Wikipedia:OTRS noticeboard.
  • please note this is just my understanding - I'm no expect on the whole copyright issues, if in doubt ask at The [Wikipedia:Teahouse for more help.

  • Hi Gsukin good to see your working on it - I see your problem the 'Resubmit' button hasn't appeared as you appear to have turned the template into static text. I've fixed that so you can re-submit when when happy. I haven't looked at the details as its been a rough day dealing with abusive vandals and I've had enough, however I wanted to just be polite and point you in the correct direction. If you want more input before submitting I suggest the Wikipedia:Teahouse where lots of experienced editors and admins try to help. Also to answer the other part of your question once you re-submit you should be notified on your talk page of either an acceptance/publish or it the reviewer thinks other issues need addressing. Note if your account has an email address you can control if you get email notifications here (same as the Preferences tab at the top-right). I've also left some helpful links on your talk page. Hey KylieTastic! Thanks for all the great work at the Teahouse! I'm pretty heavily involved with copyright issues so though I hate playing the schoolmarm I felt compelled to drop a note when I saw "All images on commons must be copyright free" at a recent post. Images licensed under a free copyright license. e.g., CC-BY-SA 3.0, are copyrighted and the copyright requires compliance by anyone seeking to use it to comply with that copyright. If I upload an image I own under such a free license, I still own the image, have not given up my copyright at all, and could even sue someone for misuse. The free license just makes the re-use (irrevocably) very non-restrictive. It would be correct to say "all images at the Commons must bear a suitably free copyright license or be copyright free".   • Hi and thanks Amjad Gondal the best way to improve a page like Kasupur Dulhar is probably to do two things: first look at similar pages for other villages to get ideas for content and formatting. The second is to look for sources for any new information you want to add. You can also do things like take images of any key buildings, monuments, signs etc and upload to Commons. You could also ask for help/advise from the WikiProject Pakistan on their Notice board Wikipedia talk:Notice board for Pakistan-related topics. Lastly I would recommend asking for advise at the Wikipedia:Teahouse as many experienced editors will see you questions, including some with more experience in article expansion. User Pages

It is clear that many new editors don't understand what a user page is, because there are a lot of sandbox drafts that are submitted to AFC that would be suitable for user pages but are not encyclopedic.   • Hi Robert| yes a lot could be done to help instruct new editors of the basics and stop the same old issues popping up... and yes reviewing the AFC submissions is a double edged sword as by helping out you do open yourself up to the kickbacks from the declines.
