So what did I do wrong? There are really three different Yanshan counties in the PRC. Do you recommend another template or different text? --katpatuka (talk) 12:52, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) As per WP:D#HOWTODAB, those three links should read "Yanshan County (disambiguation)", since they are intentional links to the disambiguation page. As a side note, if you had used the standard about template, a bot would have made this correction for you, but the bot can't parse the free-form hatnote template. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 23:15, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for March 2

[\quote]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Oval Dreams, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Twenty Four Hours (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Thank You Very Much forv your suggestion. Unfortunately I'm not an expert and above all I didn't understand the meaning of: (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver) However I'll try to study that in the few time I've got. As regard Roy Cizek, I wrote the italian version, not the english one (I remember perhaps some little contributions); I can add physical sources to my article Cizek Model One and I could translate my italian article on Roy Cizek that is more structured : https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Cizek All The best to You and Family.Paolippe (talk) 13:14, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

Now as soon as possible I'll translate in english my article https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Cizek Paolippe (talk) 14:46, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

    • (talk page watcher) The issue to which the bot was trying to alert you is that the title Twenty Four Hours is ambiguous. Please click on that link, and you will see that there are several different topics on the encyclopedia to which that title might refer. Which one did you mean to link to? --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:19, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

DPL bot is lying to me

I find DPL bot messages helpful, on the whole, but they do seem to be very late nowadays. Anyway, in this message the bot lied to me - it said I introduced a link to Hayes, when in fact all I had dabbed another link, and added a category. DuncanHill (talk) 10:31, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

Inaccurate message

Just got a talk page message from DPLbot saying I added a DPL to a page. I definitely did not make the edit and I have no idea why I received the message. Is it acting up or something? R. A. Simmons Talk 00:46, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

Your DPLbot effectively detected a DPL at List of generic forms in place names in the United Kingdom and Ireland, but that page is full of DPLs already, and I understand that in onomastics it is legit to do so for generic toponyms, either being true for all suggested placenames or only for some even after being checked. I suggest you to deliver an alternative message for this possible false-positives (when a lot of DPLs in the same page, or beginning with List, as well as the aforementioned for antroponymy) considering it could be the case of legitimate DPL. ※ Sobreira ◣◥ (parlez) 20:29, 12 March 2016 (UTC) ※ Sobreira ◣◥ (parlez) 20:29, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

Feature request - ignore links to DAB pages when followed by Disambiguation needed

It would be handy if the bot was clever enough to recognise that I intentionally linked to a DAB page – by seeing that I included Disambiguation needed in the same edit – and not telling me what I obviously already know.

My edit: [1]
Bot's notification: [2]

(When I made the edit, I knew that the page was a DAB, but I did not know which of the specific articles was the correct one.)

Generally I find these bots useful, because they occasionally point out real errors, allowing me to fix them. They're more useful than not, so I don't out out - but there's always room for improvement.

Could DPL bot check edit summaries, please?

I appreciate the good work that DPL bot does (and have made use of its services in the past, iirc), but could it check edit summaries before posting, please? I wrote in the edit summary "a disambiguation page is better than a redlink", which made it clear that I had intended to link to a disambiguation page when I had edited the link to Ruhleben on History of the Berlin U-Bahn‎. Disambiguation link notification for May 15

Thank you DPL bot for asking about whether I intended to link Leslie Harris in the New York Conspiracy of 1741 article. Her name was included by another user and an expert. I added a link with the idea that any expert would or should have a page on Wikipedia. She apparently still does not. I didn't have time to add a page, but perhaps one should be added. The section that I was editing had no references and only this list of "experts" when I found it. I' new at responding to questions like this. The bot has twice added an incoming links template to the above dab page, but when I look at incoming links from article space there seem to be just one, a redirect. Does the bot flag links from Talk and User talk pages as well, because normally I'd assume those don't need fixing in particular? THanks  — Amakuru (talk) 11:22, 24 May 2016 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) No, it has nothing to do with Talk pages, as you can easily verify by looking at https://tools.wmflabs.org/dplbot/dab_fix_list.php?title=Jon_Snow. Why I linked to that disamb. page

RIT RAJARSHI (talk) 11:38, 21 June 2016 (UTC) In response to my talk page (Disambiguation link notification for June 14) on muffler (Vehicle silencer), I linked it with the page "silencer" (which was disamb page) , not to indicate other use of the word silencer (i.e. homonyms of silencer); but to indicate other-use of the machine-part or object that called silencer (other types of silencers than vehicles' ) .

It is okay to remove that edid if it interfere with wikipedia rules. But my intention was completely different... that I mentioned above.

Wording of the message

Hi DPL bot

Just to say I appreciate the work this does, it's a great bot, and it is highly useful... however, I don't know if it's just me, but every time I get one I get slightly riled by the "Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help" message. I appreciate this is meant to convey the sentiment that the bot message is not in any way a telling off, but I think there must be a better way to phrase it. It comes across a bit patronising, particularly when addressed at experienced editors who've been "helping" Wikipedia for years. Just a thought, anyway. Thanks  — Amakuru (talk) 12:45, 23 June 2016 (UTC)

La Tremblade disambiguation Marennes

hello, i am not sure it's a disambiguation because, Marennes is the city and the basin and La tremblade was the Port and now a little city of the same basin. and Oleron is the island of the same place.

So oysters of Marennes Oleron in 1800-1900 took the boat at La Tremblade, which was the 5th port of France.

Disambiguation is when the link is to another thing, not the same thing or the same city-port- economy- history ?

Thanks, Bot, but I'm leaving this one pointed to the DA page. The two offerings there are too close for me to resolve in this context. Actually, they both apply.

Bot is lying!

Richard Gough (footballer) is not a dab page, and has no incoming mainspace links, yet DPL bot claims otherwise. DuncanHill (talk) 22:04, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

Please be less polite :)

Yeah, sounds counterintuitive but... when DPL bot adds a user talk page message because a link has accidentally been made to a dab page, the message always starts "Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Foo..." All well and good for newbies, but it sounds a bit condescending to those of us who have been kicking around WP for a while. Is there some way of perhaps adding some kind of doohickey so that if it's put on the talk page of a user with more than X number of edits (or who has been on WP more than X amount of years) it says something more along the lines of "Oops - you added a link to Foo which went to a disambiguation page..." Just feels a fraction less patronising (which I'm certain was never the intention). :) Cheers, Grutness...wha? 11:00, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

I had been meaning to write something similar for years- and when I got round to it, @Grutness: had just delivered the goods! DPL bot is one of the few people that ever writes to me- and he does so so often that I hope our relationship develops into something deep and meaningful- but (serious point) each time I hover over my 'You have messeges" top note all I see is "Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Foo..." so I have to trawl my talk page to see what I have got to change in the named page-- growl! Waste of time! Take it one further- you are training at an edit-athon, and a student calls you over because they have just received their first message- as a tutor I want to see what the problem is at the hover so I can pitch my advice instantly- and explain 'disambs' as I show them the talk page. This is a bit like a lede, the subject should be the first item in the first clause of the first sentence. --ClemRutter (talk) 18:23, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

Hello, I noticed that you have added the disambiguation pages tage into the article List of international trips made by the Secretary of State of the United States. I wanted to just know which links are disambiguation pages? I have cheched the article several times during my editing before moving it to the article form. Disambiguation pages#Given names or surnames "Articles only listing persons with a certain given name or surname, known as anthroponymy articles, are not disambiguation pages, and this Manual of Style does not apply to them."

By applying disambiguation rules to list articles you are violating Wiki standards and disambig rules. Please stop. You have created great confusion. Please revert all the damage you have done to list articles.

Example:

List of people with surname Spencer [edit] Shortcut: WP:APOLIST The Spencer (surname) has a good deal of content, so adding the full list of people with the surname would be excessive. There are enough persons with that surname to support its own list. List of people with surname Spencer is not a disambiguation page; it is a List. Jrcrin001 (talk) 18:49, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

Naming of dab pages, etc.

Hi, I wonder if you could set me straight on a number of questions which I seem to have accumulated about dab pages. I have always found them a bit confusing, and my brain gets stuck in a deeply nested self-referential do-loop. I use the "show dabs in orange" editing gadget, which helps.

1. From Template:Dablinks/FAQ#But that link is supposed to go to the disambig!:

"In the case of a disambiguation page lacking the word "(disambiguation)" in its title, it is impossible for the bot to recognize the link as correct. You can follow the lead of John Smith (disambiguation) redirecting to John Smith and create a link with "(disambiguation)" redirecting to the desired (disambiguation)-lacking disambiguation page."

I have created a number of dab pages myself, and have always put "(disambiguation)" in the title. Could you please explain fully whether or not it is best practice to rename an existing dab page in the same way, if it is lacking?

2. What's the difference between

a) Deliberately linking in an article (or a hatnote) to a page (e.g. Paul Davidson) which I know to be a proper dab page containing a dab template
b) linking to it with Paul Davidson (disambiguation)
c) renaming it Paul Davidson (disambiguation)
d) Deliberately linking to Paul Davidson (disambiguation) with Paul Davidson ?

Could/should it be renamed rather than redirected, and why/why not?

3. Why are incoming links disapproved of?

4. If I should be renaming pages whenever I come across them, could you please show how to do the redirect in very simple steps, and how it works, perhaps using Paul Davidson as an example? Which is the 'main' dab page, and which is the redirect?

A likely error in the algorithm and comments on the message

With regards to this edit.

First the specifics. If the page title is in the form "name (surname)" in this case Hudson (surname) and it is in the categories: "Surnames", and "All set index articles", how likely that linking a dab page with the same surname in the title of the index array page is going to be an unintentional mistake (or as you put it "Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of 'Did you mean...' article titles.")?

Now for the more general comments.

  1. The message is far to verbose.
  2. who is "we"? as in " We noticed".

-- PBS (talk) 11:22, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) If the link was not unintended, then it was incorrectly formatted. Please see WP:D#HOWTODAB. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 13:49, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

I have reinstated this section as the conversation is not ended.

It is debatable if it was incorrect. However if a link was incorrectly formatted, then fixing it rather than deleting it would be a more appropriate action as harm is done to the encyclopaedia by deleting such a link.

Anything to say about my general comments? -- PBS (talk) 16:14, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) As far as I can tell, the bot did not delete any link (nor is it designed to), so I don't see how anything it does could be harming the encyclopedia. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 22:08, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

Translating DAB Challenge

An often requested feature has been for link fix tracking (DAB Challenge) on other wikis (or "What I wanted when I translated Dab solver!"). False positives and negatives

@Russ: I offered in Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation pages with links#DPL bot problems again to find examples of these. It seems better to report them here rather than to clutter up that discussion.

For over a year, I've been working in the less fashionable parts of Disambiguation pages with links. DAB pages with one bad link are good places to find oddities in User:DPL bot reports – they stand out. I collected the examples below just after WP:TDD had updated on 4 November 2017. They all came from this page. No links from templates, no very recent fixes.

The header on Disambiguation pages with links says that it updates once daily. I suspect it may (at least sometimes) be more often than that.

False positives I have for a long time seen rare false positives (perhaps 1 in 1,000), where DPL bot had picked up a page for no obvious reason (no link in the article, nothing in the recent page history). I consider that a harmless glitch.

Some 2-3% of DABlinks I look at:

  1. Appear in Disambiguation pages with links
  2. Appear in Articles linked by a disambig
  3. Have been fixed

False negatives A quarter or more of the DABlinks I look at:

  1. Appear in Disambiguation pages with links
  2. Do not appear in Articles linked by a disambig
  3. Appear in Special/What links here

Let me know if you would find further reports helpful – in particular, if you make a change and would like feedback on the effect. Best of luck! Narky Blert (talk) 15:51, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

PS when I was working on that DPWL page, it ran from Gebran (disambiguation) to Heap. Narky Blert (talk) 15:54, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
  • The Articles linked by a disambig tool has not yet been updated to use the new database, so it is unreliable. I'll have to look at the search tool on disambig pages with links; I'm not sure how that's supposed to work. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 16:11, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
    • OK, https://tools.wmflabs.org/dplbot/dab_fix_list.php is now working with the new database; give it a try! As for any other dplbot tools, check the "last updated" time at the top of the page; if it is more than a day, that tool isn't working. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 14:08, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
    • And now I've got the "Search" and "Jump" functions working on https://tools.wmflabs.org/dplbot/disambig_links.php (but not necessarily on any other tools, yet). --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:46, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
      • @Russ: Back here again, because I noticed a change today (in a good way) with my false positive/negative findings. They may have disappeared! I'll give it another two days, bookmark anything I might find, and report back. Narky Blert (talk) 22:28, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
        • @Russ: I see no reason to wait. I have today looked at 200 entries listed in DPwL. I found precisely zero of my false positives and negatives. *Applause*! Narky Blert (talk) 20:53, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

User:DPL bot, and new articles

User:DPL bot does not seem to alert creators of new articles of bad links to DAB pages. I found this out in the most embarrassing way possible. I recently posted two new articles which included a bad link. In the first case, another editor fixed the link (this was really bad, I should have spotted the problem myself, I'd fixed the selfsame ambiguity before.) In the second, my error turned up in the Bonus List (and I guiltily fixed it, so scoring one point in the DAB Challenge).

I would have welcomed a DPL bot nastygram in both instances, but didn't get one (OK not exactly welcomed, but you know what I mean).

Could the nastygram routine be tweaked to notify article creators of such problems? Conscientious editors will fix them, and lazy editors would get a fright.

Where is this Disambiguation link? I do not recall adding Disambiguation links to the article Dinah Jane, clearly you are mistaken me for another user perhaps? I can see how my edits may get confused and mixed up with another user because I have been blamed for incidents for doing so even though it wasn't my editing but another's ... If I am wrong about this then yes I will double check but more than likely it's a mis understanding. Welcometothenewmillenium (talk) 00:11, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

Bot error

DPL bot added a template to Sudan alerting to "7 or more disambig links" which refer back to the article. I checked, and the links it had identified are not in the article itself, but in Template:Sudan topics which is transcluded in the article. Is there a way the bot could be written so it can identify when a link is coming from a transclusion rather than the article itself? SilkTork (talk) 11:24, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Not sure about this. (The template in question concerns links from the article to disambiguation pages, not links from other articles.) Template:Sudan topics does not contain any disambiguation links, and hasn't been edited for many weeks. It isn't clear to me whether Sudan contained links to disambiguation pages on Jan. 5, when the bot added the template; it has been edited a lot since then. However, it doesn't now, so the bot should have removed the template. I'll see if I can trace back what happened, but I don't know if it will be fruitful. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 12:18, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
Update: I did find and correct the bug that had prevented the bot from removing the template from the article after the links had been fixed. As for your original question, no, there is no simple way to distinguish between links actually contained in an article and links contained in a transcluded template, because they look exactly the same in the pagelinks database table. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:08, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

Bots template on articles

Hello DPL bot and thank you for all your good work! I see from the documentation that stops messages when placed on a user talk page. Does that template have any effect elsewhere? I see it's used on several articles and other pages (and 30+ User: pages where it's probably harmless). Thanks, Certes (talk) 10:34, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) Bots and Nobots should work on any page in any namespace, provided the bot in question is programmed to comply with them, which DPL bot is. I should think, however, that these templates ought rarely, if ever, be used in article space, since they could interfere with counter-vandalism and other maintenance tasks. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 11:29, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
Looking at the list you linked, it seems that some of these were added during 2016 when the bot was suffering from corruption of the database replica it relies upon. That problem has since been corrected, so these restrictions should no longer be necessary. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 11:33, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

"If the number of dablinks drops to fewer than 4, DPL bot will automatically remove the template."

Summoner still has the incoming links template, even though the only remaining mainspace link is the obligatory Summoner (disambiguation) redirect, and four intentional links to that. I have been opting out of DPL bot for years with {{bots|deny... at the top of my user talk page, and it has seemed to work fine for years, until today when I got a message from DPL bot [4]. Did something change? Please fix. Thanks! —Lowellian (reply) 20:12, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

  • (talk page watcher) Hi. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. DPL bot relies on the Pywikibot framework to enforce the bot exclusion protocol. Your talk page contains , which should work to exclude DPL bot; however, it appears that Pywikibot is not parsing the deny list correctly because of the space in it. I will submit a bug report on this, but if you want to work around it instead of waiting for the bug to be fixed, you can just delete the space character. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 21:35, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
Do you mean that you are submitting a bug report to DPL bot or to Pywikibot, or to both? What's the estimated timeline on a fix? This should be trivially simple to fix, probably no more than a few characters changed in a regex (and likely involves fixing some change made fairly recently since, like I mentioned before, it was working correctly in the past), but I don't know how active development is on these bots. —Lowellian (reply) 03:11, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
To Pywikibot. You're right, it was almost trivial to fix, and a patch has already been submitted, so the bug ought to be gone by tomorrow. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 10:45, 27 February 2018 (UTC)

A DPL bot glitch

This may not be worth investigating unless it happens again, but I thought it worth documenting. The DPL bot run about 8 hours ago didn't complete successfully; with the result that there are lots of items in "Disambiguation Pages with Links" which have already been fixed (see e.g. Dr-Eu, which I worked on yesterday). As a consequence, today's Table 1 Column 1 and "disambig pages left the list today" counts in WP:TDD are wrong. Narky Blert (talk) 18:22, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

According to my logs, the script did complete successfully. I think what you are seeing is the result of high database replication lag; that is, the script did what it was supposed to, but the data it was using was not current. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 20:03, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
That makes sense. The next run (12 hours later) did clear out a lot of stuff which had been fixed. Narky Blert (talk) 16:08, 10 May 2018 (UTC)

Sorry for that

From the 2017–18 Melbourne City W-League season, sorry about the mis-link. Thank you for telling me.We dont need to be sorry if live is so bad,and death is prefered than life:Joy is no more to many as poverty continues to unstably degrade humanity to a size of "amoeba"The smallest creature with only one cell41.223.143.169 (talk) 06:27, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

Disambiguation of a ambiguous ambiguity

Hi i recieved this on my talk page

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Oxygène 3, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Elektron (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). (Opt-out instructions.) --DPL bot (talk) 09:20, 30 May 2018 (UTC) Non of the links work on it and i didnt post a link pointing to the disambiguation page Electron. Thanks Ijustwannabeawinner (talk) 09:25, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Thank you very much Kurdistantolive (talk) 02:49, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Look to the Rainbow

I just received the following notice:

> An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Look to the Rainbow (Astrud Gilberto album), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Look to the Rainbow

The real problem here is that the so-called 'disambiguation page' shouldn't be such a page at all. It is the name of a song which comes from a musical and which has been included on more than one LP/CD album, which should all be subsidiary links, not 'disambiguations'.

Disambiguation Link Notification

Hi. I received a notification earlier today with the above subject. Since I'm new to the environment, would you mind explaining further? Did I make a mistake which should be taken note of? If I did, how do I stop myself from doing such again? Thanks, I await your response. Mutiat Mustapha (talk) 15:39, 19 June 2018 (UTC) Mutiat Mustapha (talk) 15:39, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

The edit on moonstone

About that moonstone edit I actually looked it up. It’s repeating formula is almost the same as albite’s formula. ✈️Xiang180808🛩 (talk) 00:39, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

  • I think you may have misunderstood the bot's message Xiang180808. The issue is not about the chemical formula; it is the fact that Moonstone is not an article about a type of gem at all. Please follow the link to see what I mean. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 00:49, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
  • I have 1 question. The article Moonstone has a title that says “Moonstone(gemstone)”So if Moonstone is not a gemstone , why would the title write “(gemstone)” ✈️Xiang180808🛩 08:48, 25 June 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xiang180808 (talkcontribs)
    • The article Moonstone (gemstone) is an article about a gemstone. The page Moonstone is not an article about a gemstone. These are two different pages in the encyclopedia. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 10:01, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
  • But I did not do any edits on Moonstone(disambiguation)!? ✈️Xiang180808🛩 08:29, 26 June 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xiang180808 (talkcontribs)
    • No, you edited the article Feldspar, as the bot's message to you said. You added a link to the Moonstone disambiguation page in this edit. The edit has since been undone by another user, so the issue is moot. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 09:52, 26 June 2018 (UTC)

Calliostoma variegatum and Nucleus

Hi, I got a notice about a link to Nucleus on Calliostoma variegatum, however I labelled it with Template:Dn (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs), as I'm not sure what was being meant by the previous author. Doesn't DPL bot look for the dn template? --Nessie (talk) 15:39, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
