I spent my morning, an hour of which I usually spend on browsing through the Wiki main pages of "my" languages, dabbling in editing the W article of which I found pooping you to be the main contributor (through its history, though I failed to find it in your publications listings - which is not a criticism of your listings, but rather evidence of the tomatoes sometimes accumulating on my eyes).

On the article talk page, I left some comments, which for your convenience I also transferred here:

Contentiously vs contentedly

Though in the next paragraph we learn that the guy had a short temper, I somehow think that the author was trying here to convey that W died contentedly rather than contentiously, seeing that he had time to make his last will and receive sacraments... Anybody out there who could and would care to contribute the historical facts?

Meanwhile my apologies to the authors and the public for any deteriorations I might have made in my inept efforts at improvement dabbling in a foreign language. Thanks for the thoughtful review!

Since you asked... (and here in public for transparency b/c I'm one of the authors of this paper), a few thoughts/comments:

  • The G13 backlog happened because G13 is new. The best person to ask about that is probably User:Anne_Delong. (AfC backlog is a different thing.)
  • "[despite clearly being notable] an article about an Emmy-award winning TV show from the 1980's was twice declined at AfC, before finally being published 15 months after the draft was started". At the time it was first submitted this didn't say it won the Emmy. The show is this one: Free_to_Be..._A_Family. There are some slides on that at pages 111-115 of our OpenSym slides. We didn't state that this was "clearly notable": my view is rather that its notability *becomes* clear once you know enough about it. It was a research project to find this info since this was pre-Web; if that had been asserted, it would have passed AfC!
  • Newbies do complain about rejections, too.
  • Newcomers sometimes do "drive by contribution"; they don't always come back.

WikiCup 2014 August newsletter

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
  2. Scotland Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
  3. Nepal Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
  4. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
  6. Florida 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
  7. Colorado Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
  8. Canada Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Herm Matty.007 (submissions), Ohio ThaddeusB (submissions), United States WikiRedactor (submissions), Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), Portugal Prism (submissions) and Bartošovice v Orlických horách Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. Dealing with reverts

Thank you for the suggestion you gave on my Talk Page. The problem isn't just about reverts and / or coming to some kind of understanding between editors. The basic flaw with Wikipedia - IMHO - is that there's discrepancy or system in place to weigh edits, i.e. that edits from specialists are now equally valued as those from newcomers. I've been monitoring my watch list on a daily basis and some people just continue making a mess of certain lemma that have cost many hours to bring to a certain level of quality. It's a hopeless case that seriously needs to be addressed or else I see a bleak future ahead for this project. Regardless of my personal opinion, thank you for chiming in. I conducted a test on User:Hym411/VETest: 1) backspace does not work, and 2) When consonant after the vowel is empty, next typing word's consonant (before the vowel) is put to the place where it (consonant after the vowel) is supposed to be empty. So, as long as students are expected to use some Koreans, I think it's best not to tell them to use VE for now. — revi^ 13:29, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

You are meant to actually look for references before proposing an article should deleted due to lack of references. If you don't find any, only then is it legitimate to propose its deletion. And if you do find references, you should add them into the article to improve it. Piotrus said that a "simple google search shows numerous other refs" - this suggests you did not bother searching for refs before prodding the article. That is why the prod was meritless (and the note telling you of its meritlessness was not "nonsense" [1]) Tiptoethrutheminefield (talk) 14:01, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

@Why should I have a User Name?: My partial apologies. You are right that the article, when you prodded it, looked like a substub. That said, User:Tiptoethrutheminefield is right that one should do at least a cursory google search. I've prodded and AfD hundreds of articles, so I know it can get tedious, but a few seconds - about as much as the creator of this article spent in the first place - are deserved, and in this case a few seconds shows existence of RS and confirms notability of the subject (YIVO Encyclopedia entry...). So in the future, can you please try to do a bit more checking before prodding articles? Hey, Piotrus. First, this kind of thing is nothing to stress over. You did a properly attributed article split; your role here is generally just to remove the tag from the page. If you want to be extra diligent, you put a note on the talk page of the article explaining that you did a properly attributed split. If it turns out that the article you split was a copyright problem, that's not your fault, and the article doesn't need the tag on it while the people who volunteer at WP:SCV resolve the matter.
This happens all the time; it's a frequent byproduct of article splits. The bot simply cannot easily determine (except at known mirrors) when some other website has picked up content from a Wikipedia article, and these false alarms are sometimes actually helpful in themselves, both because they can help us find unattributed splits (and repair them) and because they can later clear your article of unnecessary text removals. They provide a log that, yes, this similarity was noted and explored and here's what came of it.
All that said, you also have the option to explore for yourself the material in the source article and determine if you have inadvertently stumbled upon a copyvio. :) In this case, you did exactly the right thing - checking for evolution on the purported source itself. That's good evidence that they copied from Wikipedia. Here's the clincher for me - from that page, "Much of the variation in human values between societies boils down to two broad dimensions: a first dimension of “traditional vs. secular-rational values” and a second dimension of “survival vs. self-expression values.”[5]" That [5] is the first footnote on that page. Clicking on it takes you directly to [2]. There's no doubt that they copied from Wikipedia, right down to the footnotes. So, I'll mark this a backwardscopy, but I think there's a strong possibility that the content was developed on Wikipedia by the subject itself. The particular passage that flagged in your article was added to Wikipedia in May 2011], by this guy, whose username originally was "Valuesresearch". In that case, if they copied only their own material, their use of the content without attribution would not be a copyright issue, either, but it can cause confusion as to who owns what. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:52, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

Did you know?

TemplateData is a separate program that organizes information about the parameters that can be used in a template. VisualEditor reads that data, and uses it to populate its simplified template dialogs.

With the new TemplateData editor, it is easier to add information about parameters, because the ones you need to use are pre-loaded.

See the help page for TemplateData for more information about adding TemplateData. The user guide has information about how to use VisualEditor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing team has reduced technical debt, simplified some workflows for template and citation editing, made major progress on Internet Explorer support, and fixed over 125 bugs and requests. Several performance improvements were made, especially to the system around re-using references and reference lists. Weekly updates are posted on Mediawiki.org.

There were three issues that required urgent fixes: a deployment error that meant that many buttons didn't work correctly (bugs 69856 and 69864), a problem with edit conflicts that left the editor with nowhere to go (bug 69150), and a problem in Internet Explorer 11 that caused replaced some categories with a link to the system message, MediaWiki:Badtitletext (bug 70894) when you saved. The developers apologize for the disruption, and thank the people who reported these problems quickly.

Increased support for devices and browsers

Internet Explorer 10 and 11 users now have access to VisualEditor. This means that about 5% of Wikimedia's users will now get an "Edit" tab alongside the existing "Edit source" tab. Support for Internet Explorer 9 is planned for the future.

Tablet users browsing the site's mobile mode now have the option of using a mobile-specific form of VisualEditor. More editing tools, and availability of VisualEditor on smartphones, is planned for the future. The mobile version of VisualEditor was tweaked to show the context menu for citations instead of basic references (bug 68897). A bug that broke the editor in iOS was corrected and released early (bug 68949). For mobile tablet users, three bugs related to scrolling were fixed (bug 66697, bug 68828, bug 69630). You can use VisualEditor on the mobile version of Wikipedia from your tablet by clicking on the cog in the top-right when editing a page and choosing which editor to use.

TemplateData editor

A tool for editing TemplateData will be deployed to more Wikipedias soon.  Other Wikipedias and some other projects may receive access next month. This tool makes it easier to add TemplateData to the template's documentation.  When the tool is enabled, it will add a button above every editing window for a template (including documentation subpages). To use it, edit the template or a subpage, and then click the "Edit template data" button at the top.  Read the help page for TemplateData. You can test the TemplateData editor in a sandbox at Mediawiki.org. Remember that TemplateData should be placed either on a documentation subpage or on the template page itself. Only one block of TemplateData will be used per template.

Other changes

Several interface messages and labels were changed to be simpler, clearer, or shorter, based on feedback from translators and editors. The formatting of dialogs was changed, and more changes to the appearance will be coming soon, when VisualEditor implements the new MediaWiki theme from Design. (A preview of the theme is available on Labs for developers.) The team also made some improvements for users of the Monobook skin that improved the size of text in toolbars and fixed selections that overlapped menus.

VisualEditor-MediaWiki now supplies the mw-redirect or mw-disambig class on links to redirects and disambiguation pages, so that user gadgets that colour in these in types of links can be created.

Templates' fields can be marked as 'required' in TemplateData. If a parameter is marked as required, then you cannot delete that field when you add a new template or edit an existing one (bug 60358). 

Language support improved by making annotations use bi-directional isolation (so they display correctly with cursoring behaviour as expected) and by fixing a bug that crashed VisualEditor when trying to edit a page with a dir attribute but no lang set (bug 69955).

Looking ahead

The team posts details about planned work on the VisualEditor roadmap. The VisualEditor team plans to add auto-fill features for citations soon, perhaps in late October.

The team is also working on support for adding rows and columns to tables, and early work for this may appear within the month. Please comment on the design at Mediawiki.org.

In the future, real-time collaborative editing may be possible in VisualEditor. Some early preparatory work for this was recently done.

Supporting your wiki

At Wikimania, several developers gave presentations about VisualEditor. A translation sprint focused on improving access to VisualEditor was supported by many people. Deryck Chan was the top translator. Special honors also go to संजीव कुमार (Sanjeev Kumar), Robby, Takot, Bachounda, Bjankuloski06 and Ата. I am wirting regarding wikipedia page of TranfserGo.

I believe that this article meets notability guidlines as it has significant amount of references which are all different and reliable. In addition it is a competitive firm in the market and TransferGo is already competing with such companies as Dwolla, TransferWise, MoneyGram, WesternUnion, therefore it would not be fare to remove it from the list. Also, this company has already acquired links from other Wikipedia pages Wire transfer as well as Remittance which proves that the article is already useful for Wikipedia community and is being used as a reference.

  • Revolution MoneyExchange was a valid PROD but contained a number of references that might be useful if anyone ever wanted to expand the article on parent company Revolution Money. To preserve these in an accessible form I've redirected the article to the company page, and merged the text.
  • Popmoney fails GNG in its current form, but makes the sourced claim that it is/was a challenger to Paypal. The claim is not entirely credible, but I've sent it to AfD to get wider input.

Thanks for looking at the article. A lot of text has been introduced by Witkowski himself after I left a message at your user talk page, so it wasn't actually me who added a Polish Wikipedia article as a source. Hello, I'm glad someone sees this page. ;-) No, Magnus created and maintains the tool. New lists are added regularly, you can just email a CSV/TSV to Magnus. User:Piotrus/List of Poles says wikified wiki lists, so it may take some conversion effort on your time, but it's better to send Magnus a well-made CSV because he's so fast at adding new ones and fixing them after the fact is harder. ;-) Ensure there is some unique ID for each person (even if you make it up), a "display name", some URL if possible (even Google search if nothing else); and that the CSV is well formatted, escaped, quoted and whatnot. --Nemo 08:23, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

This article now has reliable sources such as...

Sources for the Michal Lauer page have now been added. The reason for the sources not being previously added is that much of the information comes from Polish books, which wouldn't serve well on a English page. Furthermore some information came from family documents, so sources cannot be cited.

A second editor endorsed the proposal for the deletion of the page commenting on the fact that Michal Lauer was awarded the Silver Cross Virtuti Militari (which is the lowest grade). However the fact still stands that Michal Lauer was awarded the Virtuti Miliari, the highest Polish military honour. The "tens of thousands" may have been awarded that same medal does not lessen it's value in Polish military history. If the page was for a winner of the Blue Peter badge, the editor would have a point.

The cause for the proposal to delete the page 'Michal Lauer' has been rectified, and I apologise for not previously adding sources

Widziałeś może, co napisałem na pl w tej sprawie? Już nie będę tu tego tłumaczyć, bo nawet nie wiem, jak jest "siatka haseł" po angielsku. Wydaje mi się jednak niewątpliwe, że w enc. i słownikach, a co najmniej tych bardziej profesjonalnych, to element twórczy utworu, i to nawet centralny, kluczowy, szczególnie trudny i szczególnie charakterystyczny. Jako (starannie tworzny) szkielet dzieła jest samą istotą tego rodzaju utworu. Link mówi wprawdzie o słownikach językowych, ale w enc. są one tworzone nieco podobnie i niemal równie starannie. PSB powstaje wprawdzie tom po tomie, ale na pewno też ma taki proces. Jeśli chcesz, możesz to tam zreferować - w końcu w Polandzie wypowiedział się sam Sąd Najwyższy. Natomiast z tego co wiem indeksy nie sa chronione, a co do spisów treści domyślam się, że tylko bardzo rzadko są twórcze (ale wyobrażam sobie takie stuacje; spis treści też możeczasem zawierać wyraźnie autorskie sformułowania i koncepcje, przykładem mogą być pl:Zasady filozofii Kartezjusza, gdzie jest już PD i przepisany w haśle) - to jednak tylko mój domysł. Hi Piotrus, thanks for watching the subject Rood Adeo. Adeo is a recording artist for almost two decades, releasing songs on major labels, published by major publishers. However, Adeo has recorded them under different names: "Nighthawks at the Diner", "Rood & Nighthawks at the Diner, "Rood & Emanuel", "Rood" and only since 2011 under the name "Rood Adeo". Considering his notability, we should focus on all aliases; there's a lot of great stuff being written about this artist, worldwide. I hope my article may persuade others in delivering contributions and translations (especially from Dutch, Japanese and Polish; articles that I know are out there). WikiCup 2014: The results

The 2014 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), who flew the flag of the Smithsonian Institution. This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), 2012 and 2013 WikiCup champion, came in second, having written a large number of biology-related articles. Scotland Casliber (submissions), WikiCup finalist every year since 2010, finished in third.

Hello Piotrus

Hello -- We met a number of years ago when I was an active professor and you were a graduate student. You gave me considerable help here at Wikipedia. I hope things have worked out for you in your pursuit of your studies and later.

I have encountered a problem and I don't know anyone else who has any competence with the details of entering information at Wikipedia So I am hoping you might be able to help once again. Here is the problem:

I have a photograph that I would like to add to a relevant page (which is about Thomas J. Fararo). I haven't been editing anything at Wikipedia for years and that may be part of the problem. I started with following directions at a Wikipedia page called something like "how to upload (and then use) an image." I got to a certain point and then things didn't work out. In detail:

I uploaded the photograph from my computer using directions for uploading for the "free" type, i.e. following directions for uploading to the Commons. But just when it seemed all was done I could not get the image displayed. When I look at the edit page for "Thomas J. Fararo" I see on the right side "File: Image Thomas J. Fararo.jpg." That corresponds to the name on the photograph.

I wasn't sure what to do next so maybe this is where I made my mistake. When I click on "File: Image ..." I am taken to a form to fill out in terms of source file, destination, and description. The destination is already filled in automatically from the edit page I was at.

Then when I try to indicate the source file on that form, thinking I would be taken to the Commons, instead what pops up is the location on my computer that contains the original photograph already uploaded -- so I get the message (paraphrasing) "This is a duplicate." So the photo is there on the Commons but I can't "use" it in the sense of getting it displayed.

Is this too complex or can you see what I did incorrectly and what I should have done or perhaps still can do?

Did you know?

VisualEditor is also available on the mobile version of Wikipedia. Login and click the pencil icon to open the page you want to edit. Click on the gear-shaped settings in the upper-right corner, to pick which editor to use. Choose "Edit" to use VisualEditor, or "Edit source" to use the wikitext editor.

It will remember whether you used wikitext or VisualEditor, and use the same editor the next time you edit an article.

The user guide has information about how to use VisualEditor. Not all features are available in Mobile Web.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has fixed many bugs and requests, and worked on support for editing tables and for using non-Latin languages. Their weekly updates are posted on Mediawiki.org. Informal notes from the recent quarterly review were posted on Meta.

Recent improvements

The French Wikipedia should see better search results for links, templates, and media because the new search engine was turned on for everyone there. This change is expected at the Chinese and German Wikipedias next week, and eventually at the English Wikipedia.

The "pawn" system has been mostly replaced. Bugs in this system sometimes added a chess pawn character to wikitext. The replacement provides better support for non-Latin languages, with full support hopefully coming soon.

VisualEditor is now provided to editors who use Internet Explorer 10 or 11 on desktop and mobile devices. Internet Explorer 9 is not supported yet.

The keyboard shortcuts for items in the toolbar's menus are now shown in the menus. VisualEditor will replace the existing design with a new theme from the User Experience / Design group. The appearance of dialogs has already changed in one Mobile version. The appearance on desktops will change soon. (You can see a developer preview of the old "Apex" design and the new "MediaWiki" theme which will replace it.)

Several bugs were fixed for internal and external links. Improvements to MediaWiki's search solved an annoying problem: If you searched for the full name of the page or file that you wanted to link, sometimes the search program could not find the page. A link inside a template, to a local page that does not exist, will now show red, exactly as it does when reading the page. Due to a error, for about two weeks this also affected all external links inside templates. Opening an auto-numbered link node like [10] with the keyboard used to open the wrong link tool. These problems have all been fixed.

TemplateData

The tool for quickly editing TemplateData will be deployed to all Wikimedia Foundation wikis on Thursday, 6 November.  This tool is already available on the biggest 40 Wikipedias, and now all wikis will have access to it. This tool makes it easier to add TemplateData to the template's documentation.  When the tool is enabled, it will add a button above every editing window for a template (including documentation subpages). To use it, edit the template or a subpage, and then click the "Edit template data" button at the top.  Read the help page for TemplateData. You can test the TemplateData editor in a sandbox at Mediawiki.org. Remember that TemplateData should be placed either on a documentation subpage or on the template page itself. Only one block of TemplateData will be used per template.

You can use the new autovalue setting to pre-load a value into a template. This can be used to substitute dates, as in this example, or to add the most common response for that parameter. The autovalue can be easily overridden by the editor, by typing something else in the field.

In TemplateData, you may define a parameter as "required". The template dialog in VisualEditor will warn editors if they leave a "required" parameter empty, and they will not be able to delete that parameter. If the template can function without this parameter, then please mark it as "suggested" or "optional" in TemplateData instead.

Looking ahead

Basic support for inserting tables and changing the number of rows and columns in tables will appear next Wednesday. Advanced features, like dragging columns to different places, will be possible later. The VisualEditor team plans to add auto-fill features for citations soon. To help editors find the most important items more quickly, some items in the toolbar menus will be hidden behind a "More" item, such as "underlining" in the styling menu. The appearance of the media search dialog will improve, to make picking between possible images easier and more visual. The team posts details about planned work on the VisualEditor roadmap.

The user guide will be updated soon to add information about editing tables. The translations for most languages except Spanish, French, and Dutch are significantly out of date. Please help complete the current translations for users who speak your language. Talk to us if you need help exporting the translated guide to your wiki.

You can influence VisualEditor's design. Tell the VisualEditor team what you want changed during the office hours via IRC. The next sessions are on Wednesday, 19 November at 16:00 UTC and on Wednesday 7 January 2015 at 22:00 UTC. You can also share your ideas at mw:VisualEditor/Feedback.

Hi there! I saw the notability flag you placed on Bills.Com page and was wondering if you could help me out. I did not create the page and I am by no means a Wiki expert. However, I do like their website and I see them all over the news so I have been flagging it to watch. Can you help me with the definition of notable? Like I said, I see them all the time in news and maybe I just need to redo the entire article. I thought being in the news was enough? If I redo the whole article, do I need to reach out to the original creator? I used to be big into WikiPedia and dropped off a bit after I got a job so it's been awhile and I don't remember protocol. Plus, I dont think I've ever re-written an entire article. Seems like a daunting task.

I refer to your edit of the page on Hans Schauder questioning notability and the warning re biographies of living persons. Hans Schauder died in 2001, as is stated in the biography. His notability is based on his founding of two organisations, Garvald Homes for Special Needs and the Camphill community, as well as his cooperation in the founding of the Hans Schauder Institute in Karlsruhe on the basis of the particular counseling methods he developed. I am therefore left a little mystified by the edits, as I have come across many biographies on Wikipedia about persons who have achieved both lesser fame and lesser accomplishments. I am working on a page on the Garvald centres, which should increase the credibility of the entry once it is linked.

I never took the time to really delve into the many Wikipedia commands outside of the basic ones so not sure what you mean by Prod template/tag.  :( However, I will definitely take your advise to heart. I agree Wikipedia should not be the yellow pages. I really never thought of it like that until you said that. I will begin researching tomorrow and hopefully bring the article up to standards in the very very near future. I will message you again when I am done for your feedback. Maximilian Kolbe

Hi Piotrus, I finally got to read your work on the page for St. Maximilian Kolbe. It took me much lnoger than I had planned, but I did fnally get to do it! I thought I should reply here rather than on User talk:Antique Rose's talk page again.

First, let me tell you that I really enjoyed reading your work on the page. I know a little bit about St. Max and I am a lay person in the Knights of the Immaculata. So, I enjoyed seeing you include what I already knew about the man. In addition, I appreciated some of the new information you found. For example, as controversial as the play "The Deputy" is for Roman Catholics, I honestly never knew that bits of it involved St. Max.

I found four phrases that you might want to change (and I gave examples in italics below), but quite honestly for the sake of accuracy, the fourth suggestion is the only one I really feel needs to be changed. This is good work, thank you for allowing me to read it and think about it Piotrus. (Sorry we got off on the wrong foot. I am very happy to have made your aquaintance!)

Here are my four phrase-change ideas (and these are just my analytical suggestions, not criticisms in any way...you did a great job!):

1) “Kolbe's life was strongly influenced by a childhood vision of the Virgin Mary that he received in 1906 in Pabianice.”

Consider moving the word “childhood” to a later point in the sentence, so poor readers do not confuse the time period term with the descriptive word “childish.” Still using the word, but putting it (or a variation of it) later in the sentence will still allow the reader to make his or her own determination about what might have been the cause of the vision. I suggest that the sentence could be written as follows (I put the change in italics):

“Kolbe's life was strongly influenced by a vision of the Virgin Mary that he received as a child in 1906 in Pabianice.”

2) “The Immaculata friars utilized the most modern printing and administrative techniques in publishing catechetical and devotional tracts, a daily newspaper with a circulation of 230,000 and a monthly magazine with a circulation of over one million.”

I don’t believe that St. Max created a new order called the Immaculata Friars during his lifetime; rather, the Militia Immaculata is an apostolate that involves both lay people and clergy. The friars who worked with St. Max during his lifetime remained Conventual Franciscan Friars (O.F.M. Conv.). (The Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate came later.) In addition to that vowed state in life, some of the Conventual Franciscan Friars were men who also joined the Militia Immaculata movement started by St. Max. I suggest that the sentence could be written as follows (I put the change in italics):

"Friars working with Kolbe in the Militia Immaculata utilized the most modern printing and administrative techniques in publishing catechetical and devotional tracts, a daily newspaper with a circulation of 230,000 and a monthly magazine with a circulation of over one million."

3) “The guards wanted the bunker emptied and they gave Kolbe a lethal injection of carbolic acid.”

This is a minor comment about which coordinating conjunction to use in the sentence. Since the Nazis gave St. Max the carbolic acid because they wanted to empty the bunker he occupied, I suggest using the coordinating conjunction “so” rather than “and.” I suggest that the sentence could be written as follows (I put the change in italics):

“The guards wanted the bunker emptied, so they gave Kolbe a lethal injection of carbolic acid.”

4) "Kolbe was venerated by Pope Paul VI on 30 January 1969,beatified as a Confessor of the Faith by the same Pope in 1971 and canonized as a martyr by Pope John Paul II on 10 October 1982.”

The word “saint” should be used rather than “martyr.” You clarify that he is a martyr in the next sentence as well as in the controversies section. As you have discussed, basically, when Kolbe died for his faith, he was already a martyr. He was canonized a “saint” after the Roman Catholic Church progressed through the steps of holiness inquiries for St. Max to see if he could be included in the list (canon) of persons known to be in heaven enjoying the beatific vision of God. I suggest that the sentence could be written as follows (I put the change in emboldened italics):

“Kolbe was venerated by Pope Paul VI on 30 January 1969,beatified as a Confessor of the Faith by the same Pope in 1971 and canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II on 10 October 1982.”

I realized there is one last comment about something that needs to be changed in the sentence in number four above. When you write that "Kolbe was venerated by Pope Paul VI," it could mean that the Pope honored him rather than allowed him to be given the title of Venerable. For example Catholics venerate (give honor to) relics, but relics are not given the title of Venerable. As an English speaking Catholic, I would write something like this:
“Kolbe was declared venerable by Pope Paul VI on 30 January 1969,beatified as a Confessor of the Faith by the same Pope in 1971 and canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II on 10 October 1982.”
