Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Flight test flights of the United States Air Force

Overpopulation

Sadads, I think you are a bit overzealous with your edits, especially deletions. The link to the Global Footprint Network is directly relevant to human overpopulation, so please explain why you deleted the link. You are right that there are other organizations, and they should and will be added later too. So, instead of just deleting stuff, just add others, if think they should be treated equally. @Peteruetz: See also sections are not for a list of everything that could be possibly related to a topic (that is what categories are for) -- you should have a direct discussion of the topic in the article if it rises to the point of analysis. See MOS:SEEALSO -- but the general guidance is not to include everything that could possibly be include. For organizations like Global Footprint -- there should be direct discussion of the entity in the article or a new section on organizations supporting arguments about overpopulation. See also sections aren't just arbitrary dumping grounds of "kindof related" stuff, Sadads (talk) 17:50, 4 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Plastic recycling

Hey -- 5 days without notifying recent editors on a talk page just isn't enough time -- for example, I was mostly away from doing significant attention t enwiki for that period -- recommendation for the future: when rebuilding a page, do it in a series of small (i.e. section rebuilds) so its easier to read in the diff. Realized I didn't @Project Osprey: -- I mostly have a lot of questions, but just can't read it in the diff right now -- neither visual or traditional diffs make sense to me in the way in which you added the overhaul. Well it is supposed to be a hobby, even if it doesn't always feel that way. I am trying to make the changes gradually over a number of days so you're able to keep an eye on the process. I normally edit chemistry pages, which obviously have a limited audience but this is a lot more important to our readers to I'm determined to get it right. --Project Osprey (talk) 14:11, 9 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Part of the challenge is that the community is also my job (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Astinson_(WMF)) so when I have work/real life stress, it really doesn't make sense for me to also volunteer :P
I think most of the writing on the article seems right, and its super interesting to see more of the technical processes get fleshed out -- and I have next week off -- so I am going to wrap my head around how I can help. I am mostly a cultural studies and social science person -- doing a lot of climate communication in the last year or two -- but I am super aware how much a well researched body of science needs to sit under the stuff that also activates people's emotions/interests. I have some sympathy. I'm a chemist who edits about chemistry, so my job is my hobby. If get fed-up with one I can find that I'm fed-up with both. We sounds like a good combination for this, as it's a technology rooted in cultural behaviours. I'm coming to the end of the tech sections so it's just the more social stuff now: history, lead, current statistics. I'll probably move a bit slower here. Technical news

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

lang=en in English articles?

Because that variable helps tools evaluate what kind of source it is -- i.e. archiving by internet archive, eventually converting the sources into structured data (i.e. shared citations or Wikidata citations). Hi @TimF Cop York: -- that lead still needs expansion -- for an article of that length I would expect something closer to 2-3 substantial paragraphs. Florida Power & Light citations

Hi, just a note when you updated the generation mix on the Florida Power & Light page (and thanks for that new info) you changed the citation from the 2016 Annual Report to another website. Unfortunately that annual report was cited elsewhere in page (see places where ref name="2017AR" is used), and those entries are now nonsensical. I planned to update with 2021 numbers anyway and will attempt to fix as I go. Yeah, it's a good thing Reading Beans pinged me here, but I was wondering why they didn't just ask me about it directly instead of coming to you. What happened is that the Canadian coverage of her Giller nomination has consistently included the Onuobia part of her name, so I had no awareness that an article already existed at a title that excluded it. Green revolution

Actually, I am aware of some of the problems with the Green Revolution, having talked extensively with disenchanted Peace Corps workers in India (1970-1972) where the Peace Corps was pushing a so-called high-yield rice that required chemical spraying in order to survive. --Bejnar (talk) 20:46, 21 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

Reliable data vs official data in Wikipedia

Based on your interests, you might want to check out the essay Wikipedia:Reliability of open government data. We (en.Wikipedia) are currently propagating official data without sufficiently warning readers how likely it is that the open data are nonsense. The distinction between "this info is reliably what the government claims about X but doesn't make sense" versus "this info is from a reliable source about X" is in the minds of editors, not readers, it seems to me. What is next?

Testers Needed! We will be partnering with YUX, a design research agency, to learn how our team can improve the experience of Wikimedia campaign organizers and participants in Africa. For this reason, we are looking for community members who are willing to be part of the rapid testing sessions. Preferably, we want organizers and editors who have worked in an African context. If you would like to participate in testing, please email ibrazal-ctr@wikimedia.org.
Upcoming Conferences. Wiki Indaba 2021. This year, the conference will be held virtually on November 5-7, 2021 with the theme "Rethink + Reset : Visions of the future". We will also be attending Wikimedia CEE Online Meeting 2021, which will be held virtually again this year on November 5-7, 2021. We will be presenting the registration tool on November 6 as part of our communication and sharing process.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

A user 'Sumanuil' Disappointed me by reverting my all night's effort

I am new here on Wikipedia, and tried to contribute by adding precious information regarding my home Tehsil, Arifwala. But Mr. Sumanuil erased all the information I added, even without pointing any mistake. N case, as a new member, I have made any mistake, he should have polish me and ask me to correct the mistake, else wasting my all night's effort. I am a Doctor by profession and gave my preciuos time to add some valuable information here at Wikipedia. But now, I am much disappointed. And starting this Discussion here as I have seen a lot of people disturbed because of this user. So, I hope Wikipedia Administration will look into this matter

Campaigns Product Update #3

Hello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers!

We are excited to share our updates:

  • Proposal to create new namespaces: We have proposed to create two namespaces, which are “Event” and “Event talk.” This way, we can easily create an Event Center that pulls data from event pages. This Event Center may include tools to create event pages with registration support, a calendar of events, and event statistics, among other features. More importantly, the Event Center will highlight organizing as an essential part of the Wikimedia movement. Please give us feedback on Phabricator or Meta about our proposal to create two new namespaces.
  • Engineering updates: We are excited that we have finished hiring for our engineering team! Three engineers and an engineering manager have joined our team since our last update. In the last few months, they have conducted technical planning and launched the building phase of the project. They are now building the registration tool. You can see the updated team on meta.
  • Design updates: We conducted usability tests with a small group of testers for early feedback on the desktop wireframes. After collecting this feedback, we have developed a new version for desktop wireframes, which will be ready to share in the next few weeks. These desktop wireframes display the user flow of two experiences: one for organizers who want to add registration to their event pages, and another for participants who want to register for an event. Additionally, the design team is also currently working on the first version of mobile wireframes, which will be shared during the next office hour.

2. Leave us some feedback on the desktop wireframes. Note that we haven’t posted the newest version of the desktop wireframes on the project page yet, but we will soon (and you can feel free to add feedback on any version you have seen).
  • Ambassador updates: Three product ambassadors for the Arabic, French and Swahili communities have now joined our team! They will help us collect feedback from Wikimedia communities about the project and understand the needs of organizers, through gathering first-hand information. These ambassadors are immersed as actual members of these communities, so they will also help us identify the needs of the organizers in our pilot communities. The ambassadors are: M. Bachounda for Arabic communities, Georges Fodouop for French communities, and Antoni Mtavangu for Swahili communities.

What is next?

Next Office Hour: We will be holding an office hour on March 31, 2022 at 15:00 UTC, which will be conducted via Zoom. We invite everyone to attend, and we really hope to see you! The focus will be on the Registration Tool. The team will also be providing community updates on the usability test findings and design highlights for the wireframes. We will also share our current Project timeline and answer any questions you may have. Join us and share your thoughts on these developments!
In a few months, we are expecting to have the early testable version of the tool. By then, the team will be doing the first round of general testing and gathering feedback. We are looking forward to adding more features on the tool such as communication support, potentially by the end of this year. If you know other organizers that might be interested in following these developments, please recommend that they subscribe to the newsletter. We want to receive as much feedback as we can.

A little help, maybe?

Hello Sadads, I’m trying to create Zimbabwean literature with a draft here already. But, I am finding it really hard to do. There are already plenty of sources online but, I don’t get seem to actually know how to interpret them into an encyclopedic tone. Do you mind helping me out with it? Hi @Reading Beans-- well the Third Generation of Nigerian Writers article is at a good place to start -- however, I don't think its ready for GA -- I would expect much more content, and description of things like themes and how the "generation" developed and distinguished itself from other generations.
As for Zimbabwean literature, I would look to other surveys of the field for example http://www.postcolonialweb.org/zimbabwe/zlitov.html or https://lithub.com/on-discovering-zimbabwean-literature-as-a-zimbabwean-writer/ -- summarizing the scope and arc of the development of a literary tradition in Zimbabwe. Consider for example reading literature surveys like this one and starting there. These summary articles are hard, because unlike a proper-noun topic (i.e. a specific novelist or novel) you need to have a mental model for the scope of the work in your head before you write otherwise it can sprawl. You also have a judgement call to make on how much you include the Rhodesian tradition, and colonial tradition before that.

@Diannaa The overlaps are limited, and just a few words from the key findings -- you are punishing a new editor and putting a wall of text on their page, rather than incubating the newcomer as a participant. If you don't have the time, when encountering these more edge case examples, please skip them. The backlog is ever growing, and 50 or 60 words of unquoted text is well within fair use of US law, so COPYVIO doesn't justify the bad experience for the newcomer, Sadads (talk) 23:04, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry but I disagree, and have been doing copyright cleanup this way for many years. I don't think this is an "edge case" either, as there's more than 60 words copied directly from the source. Wikipedia's fair use rules don't allow us to copy material from copyright sources when there's a freely licensed alternative available. In this case the freely licensed material is prose that we write ourselves. Unattributed copying is not "fair use", it's plagiarism, because the editor is passing off someone else's work as their own. We need to make copyright rules very clear to new users right from the start, to build awareness of what our expectations are. While I do occasionally paraphrase the copyvio material myself, given the volume of copyvio reports that are filed each day and the amount of time it takes to assess and clean the articles and notify and/or discuss with the editors involved, it's not possible for me to perform re-writes in each instance. — Diannaa (talk) 23:13, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Sadads, could you please reverse your reversal of Diannaa's revision deletion? Restoring copyrighted content after it has been revision deleted is not really ok, please see Wikipedia:Deletion_policy#Copyright_violations. I would reverse your action myself, but doing so would be wheel warring. Could you also please apologize to her? "you are punishing a new editor and putting a wall of text on their page" is falsely implying she is biting a newcomer when all she did was revert an edit and then give a detailed explanation as to why. There was no sort of incivility or unnecessary template spam. It is not our burden to rewrite and rephrase every bit of content that is copied into Wikipedia. "If you don't have the time, when encountering these more edge case examples, please skip them" is disrespectful, given the thousands of hours Diannaa has spent cleaning up copyright issues over the years, and seems to be implying incompetence on her part. I too would like to see more explanation from you as to the reason for your actions. Perhaps you don't realize it, but both your reversions of my copyright cleanup efforts and your explanations for the reasons why you did so are out of step with the way we are currently handling violations of Wikipedia's copyright policy. Your remarks here seem to imply that attracting new editors is more important than enforcing our copyright policy, a Wikipedia policy with legal considerations. I certainly don't think that allowing new editors to violate our copyright policy is a good idea, as it gives a very wrong impression of the professional level of conduct expected of our participants. And I certainly don't agree that 60-some words of copyvio is no big deal.

Hi @Diannaa and @Moneytrees -- apologies its been a crazy week at work and at home. The user added the content in good faith with close paraphrasing, and we revised it correctly -- and without the edit history, it was impossible for subsequent editors to revise the content, including the review of the bot report pointed to by Diana. The second revision by @Moneytrees of the close paraphrasing wasn't copied content according to the both report (from the abstract or the article, so I am not sure why you thought it was close paraphrasing), and less than half of the edit was a misattributed quote, which I sufficiently identified as quotation in a way consistent with US fair use.
Instead of doing the straightforward thing: putting quotations on the quoted content, you did the more aggressive and assumption of bad faith action: removing and erasing the contribution. Educating the user is a good idea, but doesn't actually advance Wikipedia open knowledge goal.Sadads (talk) 17:10, 6 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for responding, even though you are not agreeing with me. While the overlap was smaller with the second rewrite, my rewrite was justified as there were still issues. Quotations couldn't have been put around the text to fix the issue. To make things clearer, I am going to show the copied bits from the source, the text of the initial edit, and the second rewrite before I rephrased it. I have bolded the similarities and underlined the inconsistencies between what the cited source says and the "quoted" bits:

The source: "A popular belief in the political science and political economy literature is that oil rents are associated with corruption and state instability. [...] We support our argument documenting that there is a significant effect of oil rents on corruption in countries with a high share of state participation in oil production[...] We find that an increase in oil rents significantly increases corruption, significantly deteriorates political rights while at the same time leading to a significant improvement in civil liberties. We argue that these findings can be explained by the political elite having an incentive to extend civil liberties but reduce political rights in the presence of oil windfalls to evade redistribution and conflict."

What the user added: "Popular opinion in political science and political economy literature dictates that oil rents are associated with corruption. There is an appreciable effect of oil rents on corruption in countries with a high share of state participation in oil production. A 2011 study found that an increase in oil rents significantly increases corruption and deteriorates political rights. Improvements in civil liberties are congruent with these changes, and was explained by researchers as political elites having an incentive to extend civil liberties while reducing political rights in the presence of oil windfalls to evade redistribution and conflict."

The second rewrite: "Popular opinion in political science and political economy literature dictates that oil rents are associated with corruption. The researchers explained oil exploitation as giving political elites an incentive to "extend civil liberties while reducing political rights in the presence of oil windfalls to evade redistribution and conflict".

When doing my rewrite, I hadn't noticed that the quotes were still not the same, which I have now fixed. The initial edit is closer to an outright paste than close paraphrasing in my opinion, as the sentences are truncated and only a few words are switched out. It is close enough to the source that it would be reasonable to just remove the entire paragraph instead of attempting a rewrite. Diannaa and me are not assuming bad faith with our actions here; the vast majority of issues like this come from various reasonable misunderstandings of complicated copyright law and acknowledging this while working in the copyright area is required. However, just because someone is doing something wrong with good intentions doesn't mean they get a license to continue doing it; they need to be told that they are doing something incorrect in a measured way, which is what Diannaa did. It is not assuming bad faith to remove copyright violations, it would only be if Diannaa did something like immediately blocking the user or implying that they were copying the content for a malicious purpose. The issue with the edit could be seen then and can still be seen now at this Copyptrol report if you click "iThenticate report". Reports are generated on a per edit basis, and the bot does not catch every edit made, which is why further changes made to the article did not show up.

You tell Diannaa "you did the more aggressive and assumption of bad faith action", but I believe that is actually what you have done. Diannaa didn't even revision delete the edit at first, so anyone could have gone back and reworded it before restoring without wholesale reverting her. You restored the copyvio by wholesale reverting her and then added quotation marks around part of the paragraph, with some of the now "quoted" text not actually appearing in the source. Diannaa again reverted this as a copyright violation and directed you to the report in her edit summary before revision deleting the copyright violation under RD1, which is standard practice. She also left the above note to further explain and avoid conflict. You then un-hid the copyright violations saying "not gross copyright violation" and preceded to re-add the paragraph with minimal editing. The paragraph was still too close to the source, so I decided to just reword it to stop further conflict. I thought your actions were aggressive and essentially edit warring, with your reversal of Diannaa's revision deletion being very combative. Your actions here appear hasty- if you had taken more time to discuss the issue with her or read the copypatrol report and source after being provided with them and preceded to rewrite the content, this whole conflict could've been avoided. @Moneytrees Again, looks to me like someone who doesn't quite understand paraphrasing. The report only shows some poor paraphrasing of key phrases in the analysis, that are the findings by the author. I don't see where in the policy, if we have fixed the poor paraphrasing, especially if the edits are "redacting a revision would remove any contributor's attribution" per the policy -- which is the case here, they made no other edits to the page but did the intellectual work of bringing us the source. You and I have done several revisions to make it comply with our policy -- I think we are in a good place, in that the current text is fine and we have reached consensus on an acceptable text. Once again your response leads me to believe that you are out of touch with the way copyright cleanup as well as revision deletion are currently being done by the people who are actually doing the work. Those people are working primarily at Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations, WP:CP, and at Copypatrol. I don't remember ever seeing you at any of those places, so I wonder where you got the impression that 60 words copied from a source document is borderline, something that we would typically let slide so as not to risk alarming a new user. I don't see it as a case of poor paraphrasing - it's a violation of our copyright policy according to the way it's currently being enforced by the people who are actually working this admin task. I saw (via the CopyPatrol interface) and cleaned up a violation of the copyright policy and placed a {{uw-copyright-new}} template on the user's talk page. This template is specifically designed for new users, so I am baffled as to why you repeatedly describe my actions as aggressive and bad faith.
Regarding the question of revision deletion: The legal code states that all contributing authors must be credited. ("The credit required by this Section 4(c) may be implemented in any reasonable manner; provided, however, that in the case of a Adaptation or Collection, at a minimum such credit will appear, if a credit for all contributing authors of the Adaptation or Collection appears, then as part of these credits and in a manner at least as prominent as the credits for the other contributing authors.") It does not state that each sentence and phrase in the document must be credited to an individual author. Therefore, providing a list of contributors via the article history is adequate attribution, even if the edits themselves are no longer visible. To address the "redacting a revision would remove any contributor's attribution" point: redacting a revision does not do that per long standing understanding and the WMF, and that passage is more referring to redacting the username instead of the actual text of the edit. Even then, the text had been completely removed when Diannaa did the revision deletion, and no other content was added in between, so there was nothing to attribute. I took a break over the last week or so and have thought about this further. Of course I understand your point of view, that we need to be kind to new users who are adding content to the encyclopedia in good faith, but that does not allow them to copy text from their sources. Ignoring copyright violations from newer users just enables them to do it more and create more extensive problems. It doesn't fix any problems, it creates more. There is a post from me I would like you to read at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Archive336#We_cannot_sweep_copyright_issues_under_the_rug_any_longer, maybe you can understand my point of view and how difficult and time consuming it is to clean this stuff up. Soil aeration

Greetings. Appreciate your notification on aeration. Currently, soil aeration redirects to permeability of soils. On review, before creating soil aeration from aeration, I would consider using soil gas for main-linking(?) to a soil-aeration-specific article. Regardless, most of the ways I imagine moving forward are easier once any unsourced soil-related content has been sourced or removed from the aeration article. The human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment

Hi Alex, you moved The human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment (title of the resolution) to HRC/RES/48/13 (code of the resolution as adopted by the HRC).

On Thursday the UNGA also adopted the resolution - under the same title, but a different code.

Would you agree that having a single article (under the title) with both codes would be the most concise and cohesive way to deal with this?

If so, would you mind if I move it back?

I am concerned that your affiliation with GLAM-wiki and your employment by WMF creates the appearance of a conflict of interest regarding 1Lib1Ref articles.   1. First, I have not been involved in organizing the #1lib1ref campaign in over two years. Even if I was involved, this editor appears to have joined because of a sub-campaign run by another part of the community -- so its several steps removed at least -- claiming conflict of interest, several years later on a campaign I no longer run is extreme: what possible goal could I have that is inconsistent with the goals of the community?
  2. second, I didn't even realize that that article was created in #1lib1ref, but it appears to have been created by a new user in Africa. I regularly review content from newcomers as it comes up on my watchlist and other workflows: this happen to be a few links deep in one of those workflows.
  3. third, is there any substantive concern you had with the change I made? Clearly this articles meets GNG, and I explained the change in the edit summary -- I am open to discussion, but I am also a long-time editor of content on Wikipedia working on a workflow I regularly dip my toe into, including African content.

Thank you for your explanation. I posit the subject fails GNG and NPOL and I think others agree. WMF's many failed machinations over the years have discredited it and I have a hard time ignoring that, even though you are a long-term established editor, a WMF employee approved a sub-standard draft related to a WMF outreach program which has performed poorly. To me, WMF is one big monolith and while my oversimplification is probably wrong, I thought you could understand how those of us on the other side of the fence might interpret your editing. I'm sorry that you think the organization is a monolith, but we aren't and indeed it is an oversimplification.
As for the subject at hand, happy to disagree but: this is not a politician (so not NPOL), its a traditional ruler (equivalent to nobility in most places in Europe). Its as if we were saying that members of the house of lords are not notable in a country and context that serves many thousands more people. Additionally, the individual's coronation is covered in 4 major news sources for Nigeria, the equivalent of major new sources in European countries. Campaigns Product Update #4

Hello Campaigns Product Newsletter subscribers!

We are excited to share our updates:

  • Event Registration v0
We have successfully launched Event Registration tool V0 on beta cluster and collected feedback from the first batch of testers. This tool is part of a more comprehensive organizing solution, the Event Center, which hopes to support movement organizers. Through this registration solution, organizers can collect useful data on campaign participants and their needs while respecting participant privacy.
Testing update. In our first round of feedback collection, testers were composed of different types of organizers around the movement with a language focus on Arabic, French, English, and Swahili communities. Most of the testers successfully created their test event registrations and signed up for a test event registration created by other organizers. Simple, easy to use, and aids in managing event participants were the common feedback we received from first-time users. In contrast, access and proper localization of the tool were the points for improvement identified. We are working on V1, which will include communication support and integration with the Programs and Event Dashboard. This will be released on Meta-Wiki soon. We hope to address accessibility during this launch and improve localization problems once the tool has been deployed in local wikiprojects.
The tool is still available for testing on the beta cluster. Feel free to leave feedback on our project talk page or this form.
  • Organizer Lab
    Looking for a way to learn how to effectively organize around sustainability? Join the beta version of the Organizer Lab on WikiLearn to understand how to effectively organize a global campaign around sustainability and climate change! Applications are open from September 22 - October 19, 2022. The Organizer Lab will be a 9-week online learning experience from the end of October until mid December that prepares participants to obtain knowledge about the topics that they wish to create, a call to action for strategic knowledge gaps, as well as more generalized Wikimedia organizing and campaign/event design skills.

@Aineireland an article of that length would typically have 2-3 paragraphs of content, per WP:LEAD. For example, the current article covers nothing about his biography in the lead. Request for feedback

Hello Sadads, I am experimenting with an infobox extension to summarise local impacts of mines and similar infrastructure. I've noticed that you seem appreciative of some of my expansions of these articles to include local impacts. Perhaps you are aware that for certain projects, journal literature and news coverage is heavily weighted toward local impacts and conflicts resulting from those impacts, so I think this information is occasionally warranted in the infobox. But I am receiving some pushback, and I would like your opinion. Could you please give me some feedback on a the infobox extension in my sandbox? I agree this tends to be a dominant topics, especially in the global south and would anticipate pushback -- in that there tends to be a bias against social impact for economics and technical topics among the kinds of people who create these articles. I think this would be a good move -- but it would require a discussion on the infobox template: I don't think it would be too radical of an extension, but we should probably have clear recommendations on how it should be used in the documentation. Having an sub-template, doesn't seem aligned with the general trend to reduce cascading templates with Lua more generally, Sadads (talk) 12:56, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dear @Sadads, I see you have removed the quote I inserted. However, I think it was opportune as the source (SPE) is very reliable and the paper is interesting. I would invite you to follow the link I posted, in order to form an opinion. The work is written by leading experts in the field (there are also well-known textbook authors) and can provide the reader with useful information about the current state of the art on oil exploration technologies. Furthermore, this manuscript is readable by less experienced people, if they limit themselves to the introductory sections, as well as by more experienced readers (e.g. university students and professionals) who seek more detailed technical information. I think it should be included as a reference.

Hi @Aftershock81 if we allowed all papers that were relatively related to that topic to be in a further reading section -- the section would include thousands of articles -- I do see a distinguishing feature for why that should be in a Further reading.
On the other hand, if the work contains information that is not included throughout the rest of the Wikipedia article, I invite you to summarize that new information and add it to the Wikipedia page. Climate Change in Somalia

Hello

Thanks for adding the WikiProject rating to Climate change in Somalia. However... I must say I am disturbed to read that this topic is of LOW importance within the WikiProject. Really ? I disagree with that statement. I have looked to several other countries and in most cases, it is considered high importance. And if I compare with articles listed as mid importance... I really think the Climate change topic is at least of similar importance to many of the topics listed here: Category:Mid-importance WikiProject Somalia articles. Dunno, but picking up just one... are Lafoole University or Mohamud Abdi Gaab really considered more important to the WikiProject Somalia than an entry about Climate change in Somalia ? Hi @Anthere sorry for not responding sooner -- the low-importance is default added by the WP:Rater tool, and I usually don't evaluate importance for secondary WikiProjects outside of WikiProject Climate change. Thanks for answering. Though it is vaguely perplexing to me to read that when you post evaluations, you actually do not evaluate as a person, but let a tool do a standard evaluation note (why putting any evaluation then ?). I would also have considered an article about Climate change to be directly relevant to the WikiProject Climate. Last, I am not sure why the pageviews on a newly created article would really be the factor that influence the "importance rate". On those 3 points, I disagree with you.   • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Hi. The group is notable and I have heard them on public radio multiple times with Robert Spano. The article had no refs. I found a bunch of stuff and added it to the talk page (I'm traveling and didn't have time to properly add them to the article). I knew you'd want to know these were found.

B. -- I will take the article to AFD after a week or two -- because I can not find anything but passing mentions in the news and descriptions of their social media and performance calendar -- this is part of being a performance organization-- doesn't mean its notable (i.e. lasting public importance). @A. B. I agree, its less that I want to delete the article, and its more that it seems hard to maintain with lasting relevance, and the sources are not exactly... helpful. Coastal Erosion -- Tracking...

Hi. Was reviewing the Coastal Erosion page, and under the Trakcing section, there are a few references cited. The newest reference (Almar et al., 2023) uses a method that has been called into quetsion by about two dozen of the world's top coastal scientists. Details on this can be found at https://doi.org/10.31223/X5W66T

It would be much better to cite well used and verified techniques such as the DEA Coastlines, which comes with methods, code and an interactive viewer (https://www.dea.ga.gov.au/products/dea-coastlines), or the work of Vos et al. (2023; https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-022-01117-8).

Thanks for the update, I have added the citations as you requested. Since there was not a significant change in the written content, I have just added the citations. However, I am not an expert in the subject of coastal erosion, and don't have the time/energy right now to work out the nuance for that section. You can rewrite the section with the citations if you want. Draft for Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy

Alex, I was in touch with you earlier this year about some training that involved climate change articles. The tutor has asked me to try to make articles from some of the student drafts. There is a table at User:Charles Matthews/ARU 2023. Various issues come up.

For Draft:Gulf Coast Center for Law & Policy, I saw today (a) that Colette Pichon Battle was started by you, and (b) the GCCLP became Taproot Earth in 2022.   • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Hi @Lau737-- please find my note on your talk page: User_talk:Lau737.
There are better ways to approach linking to articles than See Also sections: they are not well used by readers, and long, complex see also sections are not consistent with Wikipedia policy (see WP:See also). As a strategy for providing persistent, high impact links for readers: adding content to see also sections is not very good -- it is one of the first places that other editors will remove content, when cleaning up the page, Sadads (talk) 16:48, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for taking a couple days -- its been busy - @Lau737 You can edit both, but they have slightly different editorial priorities: you can learn more about the various advantages and disadvantages Wikipedia:Categories,_lists,_and_navigation_templates#Navigation_templates -- remember, templates are not supposed to take over the role of Categories (organizing all the things), instead focus on the things that are relevant for navigation between the articles -- sidebars have far more visibility, but can't contain nearly as many links, were as Navboxes can contain more links, but is less visible.   • The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.

Wilmette Wilbus article needs a talk page

Hello. I just used Move for the first time from my sandbox and need a bit of help or reassurance. I think I messed up by saying to move the talk page, which was silly, and the only other article I wrote in my sandbox seems to have the Talk page. I am not sure Wilmette Wilbus has a proper Talk page now. It is about a local bus system in suburban Chicago, started by the small village of Wilmette after the private bus company went bankrupt. It lasted 20 years before the regional bus agency took over the routes. My own connection was being a bus driver for a summer in that system, a half century ago. Anyway, any help or simple explanations you can offer are welcome. Talk pages are essential, even for for a defunct local bus service. Prairieplant (talk) 05:10, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Prairieplant You are all good on moving the page! User sandbox don't neccessarily have a talk page, and you can create one now after you moved it (simply click on the red link, and add whatever you want to add). Looks good enough to me to publish @Oltrepier. You have enough non-specialist sources in there, that I think its good -- we will definitely have to make some tweaks as we work on it -- but I would start with that. Also, it might help in the long-run for attention to a few more English language sources as well just to help with evidence of broad public interest for English Wikipedia. @Bamalli01 there are several problems, I found some language that was clearly copy and pasted from another website (see Wikipedia:Copyright violations ), and the article has a lot of language and poor summary that suggests that the sources were promotional, not neutral. Based upon this request and your editing history, it seems reasonable to deduce that you are an undeclared paid editor. You are legally obligated to disclose your apparent conflicts of interest. Looking up how to contact someone at Wiki because the TALK feature on this article was disabled, I came upon the suggestion to contact a volunteer directly, which led me to a list where I saw that African literature is one of your areas of interest. My doing this came about because of a glaring error in the article on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, i.e., the entire second sentence. Perhaps TALK was disabled because the article has gone for "peer review". I have enough trouble with Wikipedia instructions, lingo, etc. as it is without having something like this happen, so, although I imagine you are very much in demand, I decided to ask you for help.

So yes: the entire 2nd sentence of the article is completely wrong factually. Whoever wrote it clearly hasn't read either of the author's first two novels and has mixed them up, saying that Purple Hibiscus is about Nigeria's civil war, while saying nothing of substance about the masterpiece Half of a Yellow Sun. The latter book, the title of which refers to Biafra's flag, is of course the book about the civil war. I feel compelled to interject that I feel it is without a doubt one of the most memorable novels ever written in English, for many reasons which are beyond the scope of this communication. Purple Hibiscus, also a wonderful novel, is not about Biafra at all, but, among other things, involves a horrible story of child abuse by an oh so respectable father.

Therefore, I need to know how to point this out to whomever is editing the apparently closed-for-further-comments article, as no one else, as far as I can tell, has made any reference to this astonishing error. So I am asking you if you could please help me with this matter in whatever way you think best. As a volunteer you must have innumerable people asking you things like this all the time, but if you could nonetheless either personally or by passing this on help me with this matter, I would appreciate it immensely.

Comment from a friendly page stalker: Northern Flicker 19 The talk page of the article is not disabled for me, nor is the ability to edit the article directly. I am coaching the editor who is at present preparing the article at peer review. In regard to your comment, the lede is typically the last thing evaluated, as it is a summary of the other material and we are at present making substantial changes in the structure of the article. When you say second sentence, I can only assume you mean the second sentence of this overview and not the body? Keep in mind that it is not required that the editor have read the books because WP articles must rely on what reliable sources say, not an editor's opinion. In this case, from the sources I have reviewed so far, Purple Hibiscus is indeed set in Biafra, but it is not the meticulous and expanded study focused on the war and its impact that is in Half of a Yellow Sun. Also, please note that this is not an article about the books, but rather a biography about her. Thus, it will only have a brief description of her body of works (in totality), how they were written, published, themes, and critical response. Expanded details on the books themselves don't belong here, but will be found in the articles of the books themselves. I have modified the first few sentences of the lede for now, but please recognize that the entire article will substantially change over the next few weeks. Thank you for your speedy reply, though I did find quite a bit of it offputting.
I just reopened the article and hit TALK and I most certainly didn't get anything resembling a page I was expecting from past experience over a year ago when I had another account with now lost I.D. I just
set up a new account and I completely do not understand what I was looking at when I opened TALK. There is no need to put me down for it.
There was no obvious space to write anything.
I actually find Wikipedia very alienating with its abstruse way of writing supposed instructions and its exclusive lingo. I don't know what the hell a "lede" is. I don't know if you're trying to help me or snow me. Excuse me but I only have a mere PhD, and I perhaps think like the lemurs I studied, though their minds should not at all be underestimated - and they wouldn't get any of this either.

Yes, Purple Hibiscus takes place in Biafra - but not at the time of the civil war, which I don't recall from over two years ago being mentioned in the book at all. It is certainly not what the book is about, nor is it its setting. Adichie is Igbo. She writes mainly about the Igbo. The Igbo live in Biafra. That's Igbo country. Nigeria is a colonial fiction and resulting nightmare, as is so common in colonized Africa. I already corrected that assertion that Purple Hibiscus was about the civil war. So yes, both books take place there. But if you look at my original comment again you should plainly see that whoever wrote that sentence was completely wrong. You could have someone who has read this article take out the book because they wanted the novel set in and against the war and find out in the end they'd read the wrong book. I don't think that sort of thing was Jimmy Wales' intention in creating Wikipedia.
The editor may understandably not be expected to have read the books,
but the writer should damn well know what s/he/they is/are talking about.Otherwise you are essentially saying Wiki is just a load of b.s. I am trying to help, just as you as a volunteer are doing. I'm pointing out a serious error. I don't care if it's an article about the author and not the books. That sentence is complete garbage and it's right at the beginning (less one sentence) of the article! That's terrible! A writer who doesn't know what they are talking about should not be in any kind of print.
I was annoyed that this didn't apply to this writer, embarrassed for
Wiki that that person messed up bad, and just wanted to help you all by pointing out the error. Yet you're going through all these contortions to cancel out virtually everything I've said in trying to point out a rather serious error in an article.
Being responded to like this has made me feel that I want to think seriously about having any more involvement with Wikipedia.

Northern Flicker 19 I apologize that my reply did not convey to you that I was trying to help. I am very confused by your expletive-filled response. Last night, I made changes to the lede in response to your first message. If those are inadequate, I honestly invite you to change it yourself. But, be aware that because the article is at present undergoing a massive rewrite, it is changing daily, and is quite unstable. The goal is to eventually shift the lede to focus on Adichie herself and away from descriptions of the works other than in the broadest general terms. Safari Scribe I think the original poster had good intentions, as did I in trying to address the concerns expressed. Let's just assume good faith all around and keep working on the article.
