GA reviews

I was just reviewing the WP:GAN page, and noticed you have several articles nominated. I'm not sure about the propriety of proposing a quid pro quo, but...well, that's what I'm doing. I was one of the editors involved in building the page Chen Guangcheng, which was nearing the end of its GA review when our reviewer mysteriously (and somewhat disconcertingly) disappeared. That was a month ago. I'm wondering if you might have time to pick up where he left off. I would gladly review an article on Polish history. Online Ambassador Inquiry

Hello Piotrus. I'm the instructor for a section of students at Ball State University in Indiana USA who are beginning a collaborative research project on Wikipedia for our Introduction to Digital Literacies class. I've been teaching with WP since Spring 2011; from my user page you can see a few example projects highlighted. We are currently in need of an online ambassador to advise several class groups on selecting topics and putting articles together: this means there will be four or five topics for an ambassador to assist with. Might you be interested in helping us? You can see the project timeline in my user area project subpage.

I have gone through the appropriate channels and application documents with the Wikimedia folks in charge of education programs, but have not heard back in nearly two weeks (I've emailed Jamie Mathewson twice). But time is getting short and we must begin—thus I'm taking the liberty of contacting potential ambassadors directly. Apology

Sorry about the post I wrote you in the Tadeusz Kosciuszko page. I wrote it when I waas tired so I didn't notice it wasn't you who wrote the post, but it's not really an excuse. I felt offended because the guy said Belarusians didn't exist then, and he also said Koscuiszko didn't consider himsellf Belarusian or spoke Belarusian (which is a lie because he said he isa Litvin, which means Belarusian, and he wrote his parents in Belarusian). I'm half Belarusian (and half Polish) and Kosciuszko is kind of a hero for me so hearing those stuff offended me, but again, there is no excuse while you should be told that you don't know this or that because you weren't even the one who wrote that comment. Reliable Source Help

Thank you for your advice and concern about the reliability of the sources on the Ithaca Bakery article.[1]. We have recently contacted the owner of the company, who -for the history section- provided us with information in the form of Word Documents of speeches he has given in the past. We don't plan on including the information word for word, since we don't want the page to be promotional, but there is valuable historical information included which we would like to use. WikiCup 2012 September newsletter

We're over half way through the final, and so it is less than a month until we know for certain our 2012 WikiCup champion. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) currently leads, followed by Canada Sasata (submissions), Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Scotland Casliber (submissions). However, we have no one resembling a breakaway leader, and so the competition is a long way from over. Next month's newsletter will feature a list of our winners (who are not necessarily only the finalists) and keep your eyes open for an article on the WikiCup in a future edition of The Signpost. The leaders are already on a par with last year's winners, but a long way from the huge scores seen in 2010. That said, a repeat of the competition from 2010 seems unlikely.

It is good to see that three-quarters of our finalists have already scored bonus points this round. This shows that, contrary to criticism that the WikiCup has received in the past, the competition does not merely incentivise the writing of trivial articles; instead, our top competitors are still spending their time contributing to high-importance articles, and bringing them to a high standard. This does a great service to the encyclopedia and its readers. Thank you, and good work!

The planning for next year's WikiCup is ongoing. Some straw polls have been opened concerning the scoring, and you can now sign up for next year's competition. GA reassessments

Hi Piotrus. I notice you have a few reassessments open. I thought I would remind you of them in case you have forgotten, they seem to have been open for a while. Definately delist Vilnius Castle Complex, an article cannot be good with that many {{cn}} tags. Personally I would remove all but the most blatant (i.e those with controversial or likely to be challenged statements) and add a {{refimprove}} as it is a bit overkill, although that has nothing to do with GAR. Same goes with the Kiev offensive although it doesn't appear as bad at first glance. Basically all you need to do is write Delist on the review somewhere, then remove the link to the reassessment from the talk page and update the {{article history}} template. It has been long enough now that no one is likely to fix it anytime soon, especially if the main editors, wikiprojects have been notified. Changing a STUB-CLASS rating, and changing a LOW-IMPORTANCE RATING, for PESA SA article.

Hi, Piotrus!

I have two easy questions for you, relating to the article PESA SA, where I just posted a greatly expanded and re-written article - essentially, a totally new article: QUESTION (1) How does one change a STUB-CLASS rating? (The former article was indeed STUB-CLASS, almost nothing; my new article is almost too detailed. My new article is mainly a translation of the Polish Wikipedia article Pojazdy Szynowe PESA Bydgoszcz, plus an expanded end section. Not just about railways, the Polish and new English articles touch on Polish history and politics since 1851). The new article is definitely not STUB-CLASS. Looking into the Wikipedia 'Manual of Style,' I couldn't even find a definition of 'Template' - it talked about doing things with templates, rather unclearly, without telling you what a template is. As far as I can tell, a template is something involving text placed between curly brackets: {{......}}. So, in PESA SA I deleted a line near the end saying class="assess-stub " style="background: #ffa4a4; text-align: center; " | Stub, and that message no longer appears at the end of the article. But I don't think this is the proper solution.

QUESTION (2) Who changes an IMPORTANCE rating? PESA is now the largest rail equipment maker in Poland, and looking at comparable firms, the article MTU Friedrichshafen about a comparable-size firm in Germany is rated MID-IMPORTANCE, while the article on the largest German maker Bombardier Transportation is rated HIGH-IMPORTANCE. Thus PESA SA should be at least MID-IMPORTANCE. Explanatory Note, why I upgraded the article: on September 19, 2012, PESA signed a contract worth up to $1.5 billion with Deutsche Bahn - an enormous contract, with the very fussy Germans who usually buy only from German firms. On September 19, TRAFFIC STATISTICS for the English article PESA SA jumped from normally about 50 up to 555, and on Polish Wikipedia TRAFFIC STATISTICS for 'Pojazdy szynowe PESA..' jumped from 200, up to 1169.Prospero10 (talk) 19:01, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Bardzo jednak żałuję, ale po pierwsze nie dysponuję ani dostatecznie precyzyjną wiedzą prawniczą, ani dostatecznie obszerną bibliografią w zakresie prawa autorskiego (polskiego i amerykańskiego) - bo oba trzeba brać pod uwagę, nie mówiąc o prawie byłych naszych zaborców - by poczuwać się do prawa do odpowiedzialnego zabierania głosu. Po stronach i podstronach Wikimedia Commons przewijają się całe tabuny samozwańczych znawców i pseudospecjalistów, którzy najczęściej robią mniej odpornym uczestnikom projektu wodę z mózgu swoimi własnymi definicjami (jeden z moich nieżyjących znajomych takie dodawane "od siebie" określenia i sformułowania, bądź interpretacje,miał zwyczaj nazywać smakowitym słowem odsiebięciny). Widziałem Twoje starcie z jednym z tych młodych (?) gniewnych sprzed paru dni, zresztą to ono najpewniej stało się jedną z przyczyn podjęcia się przez Ciebie próby uporządkowania tego tematu.

Ja nie chcę i nie umiem się do grupy "gniewnych" ani "specjalistów" zaliczać (młody zaś już od dawna nie jestem), więc pozwolę sobie pozostać tylko skromnym obserwatorem. Swoje uprawnienia admińskie na commons trzymam w dolnej szufladzie, rzadko ją otwierając, najczęściej w okolicznościach nie budzących wątpliwości.

Na to wszystko nakłada się jeszcze brak dostatecznej zdolności porozumiewania się po angielsku (zwłaszcza w zawiłej prawniczej nomenklaturze), co przekłada się oczywiście na brak pewności siebie w wypowiadaniu się w tym języku i prowadzeniu polemik.

Map ideas

At WikiProject Poland, could you get someone to make a map of the proposals in the Treaty of Marienburg and the Treaty of Radnot ? The latter is an especially interesting "what if" of history - it would have been a 17th century partition of Poland between Sweden, Brandenburg, Transylvania, Lithuania and Ukraine. New picture of Ernest Pike

Hi Piotrus, I have found a new and much better picture of the tenor Ernest Pike that shows a full portrait of him. This picture has been scanned from an early HMV record cover dating from about 1908. We must presume that the original copyright holder must have been HMV or its predecessor the Gramophone & Typewriter company, but there is no author on the photo. So in the UK - with an unknown author I presume that it is now out of copyright as it is over 70 years since publication. In the U.S it will be out of copyright anyway as it was published before Jan 1 1923. In fact it should be out of copyright everywhere as it was published more than 100 years ago. I have tried to upload this, but the upload wizard is not working for me. I have tried 2 computers. Is there a problem with uploads at the moment or can you help/advise me? --- The problem is that the "local upload" is not working - it connects then says it is uploading, then never completes the upload. The upload wizard talk shows that others have the same issue.

So I have tried the wiki commons upload which does work - but does not have any settings for UK copyright!. nor is there anywhere to set the PD-UK-unknown. I tried putting it in a licensse field and it will not accept it. So I don't know what to do. Either:- 1. The local (US and UK) wizard needs to be be fixed or/ 2. Can you explain how I upload UK pictures to the Wiki Commons which appears to be for US pictures only or do I assume that if it is out of copyright in the UK that it is also out of copyright in the US.

Hi again, Its all sorted - the uploads were working all along, but the uploader did not say when the upload was complete. Also - I coudn't find the files uploaded because the file name given by the uploader was what I thought was the full length description string! So the file names are quite long but this is no bad thing - I have found them at least. I now know (with help from the forum) that I can check all the files I have downloaded from a user contributions page or a file list page. Finally, when I release the new article, if I let you know when - could I ask you to check it to make sure it is OK - will probably be in 1 or 2 days time? Thanks for your help. Hi, The potential new picture (which has been scanned by me) for the revised Ernest Pike article is:

This picture would have appeared in about 1908 on record covers for the Zonophone/HMV grand opera series of records which Pike sang on. The photographer is unknown and it would have been first published in the UK probably in around 1907. So the question is whether HMV can still claim any copyright as a company? You should be able to accesss the uploaded photo (not yet added to the article). I would appreciate it if you could review whether I can add this to the article without any issues and if necessary amend the copyright info attached to it. The last Pike photo I uploaded caused a lively discussion - I would prefer it if this one was more peaceful! I do think this is an excellent photo of him which is entirely relevant to the article as very few pictures of him exist at all and the photo on the existing article is a very poor picture of him. Multiple edits on Ernest Pike

Hi Piotrus,

I have to ask - why do so many edits have to be made to articles that I have written? Wikipedia is full of badly written articles with no proper references and no-one seems to do anything about these. Let's look, for example at the: Peter Dawson (bass-baritone) article. This has no inline citations at all and few proper references at the end of the article and Peter Dawson is more important than Pike. Dawson is not even tagged as a problem article - and it should be. Yet when I write a good well-referenced article in clear English and put in decent references - they have to be taken out. Why do not all the people who have to make so many edits to my one article focus on articles like Peter Dawson, Stanley Kirkby etc. instead?

Piotrus, in some of the paragraphs, the same ref was repeated over and over, when the whole paragraph was referenced to the same, or a couple of, references. So, we don't need to keep restating the same ref. We can see, for example, that in the first paragraph under "Operatic recordings", all of the references are to one source. The paragraph had the ref six times in a row, and I have reduced it to four times, which is still overkill. Hey Piotrus, hope all is well. I've been having some power shorts here at home, so hopefully this hurricane will subside soon.

I know we talked last about translating the page, and I am actually very excited about the page's development. It looks good and it is growing better everyday. I'm especially happy with a map I created, File:Polish America map.jpg which makes the Polish-American page look and more engaging. Between the two, I think we'll have no trouble baiting a polish-speaking wikipedian into translating some info. It certainly doesn't have to be the whole thing, but between the Poland portal and the Polish wikipedia, I think we can get someone interested. Silesia

I need you help and advice. My friend ask me for support. On the article 'Silesia' somebody, maybe even he created table expressing history of the land. I think it is good - very informative. There a two editors, Rsloch - it seems to me does not like the clear history in table since have an German nationalistic inclination. The table is nothing more than simplification and clarification of the text, but can be dislike by some who think Germans has any rights to this region. Second person is Dominus Vobisdu, who also has somewhat strange POV, probably only pretending to be an American. I do not think the table is any controversial, since the text is not contradicted - rather clarified. Could help?. I could start logical discussion, but I am not specializing in the Silesia subject, and the two people react very agresyvely. Sigh .. I hope you don't take all these developments close to heart. Yes, isolating refs from the text has pros and cons (many are not obvious; for example, the citation bot, which often runs semiautomatically, has an elevated chance of breaking refs if they are isolated into the reflists), and no reference system is preferred. It is always frustrating to have your time wasted over this, but this is wiki, and I've been reverted on that too :-D. Note that the code size is an important factor (server connection varies in space and time, even if you have a fast PC). You could likely reduce it in your cleanups by optimizing the reference names and fields - every minute detail is important if you work through an article with 300 refs. Loading time is nonlinear with the code size. It also depends not only on the nominal code size but also on the number and "weight" of transcluded templates, on the local connection speed, and the condition of wikimedia servers/databases; thus there is no clear "danger" threshold. Above about 170k the article becomes unmanageable for several reasons: (i) takes to long to load a diff and revert vandalism, as a result, editors often revert an edit which is already in the past (because of delay); (ii) saving an edit takes too long and gives a wikimedia blue screen; (iii) even experienced editors start breaking the code because their browser/server mishandles uploads. Arbitrary formatting changes

Please stop arbitrarily changing the formatting of references in articles. You've cited Wikipedia:Citing sources#Avoiding clutter on quite a few talk pages such as at Talk:United States, so I don't think I need to point out that it says that "articles should not undergo large scale conversion between formats without consensus to do so". Please stop trying to change the formatting without a consensus to do so. You've done this on a few dozen articles and have been reverted by multiple editors, please get a consensus before you try to do this on other articles. You cannot change the formatting like you're doing, per Wikipedia:Citing sources#Avoiding clutter, the very thing you've been citing as cause to do it in the first place. If you continue to do so, it will be reverted, as it has been by multiple editors every time you do it. Every time you've started a discussion requesting a consensus to change the reference formatting, nobody has agreed with you. That doesn't mean just stop discussing and do it anyways. Drmies made a suggestion about starting a discussion in a centralized location; I think that's a good idea, and if there's a consensus for what you're doing then I won't blink an eye at it, but until then there's plenty of discussions pointing out why you shouldn't be making those edits, and the very guideline you're citing says not to do it as well. You've made bold edits and they've been reverted, and your guideline says not to do it in the first place unless there's a consensus; I think now would be a great time to discuss it somewhere centralized instead of keeping at it. I understand that you put work into changing the articles like this, but for the sake of everyone not wasting effort I think now it needs to be discussed since it's known that this is a disputed action. - SudoGhost 04:36, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Casimir Pulaski

Looking at Casimir Pulaski, it looks like all the other references are in the LDR format and had been since you changed it back in May, and that your change today was bringing others references added since then in line with this. Since it was changed months ago and the article has been worked on significantly since then it doesn't make sense change it back to the pre-LDR format. However, in the future please discuss it and get a consensus before making this change on any future articles. If that's what the consensus wants, I have absolutely no objections, but all I'm asking is that you follow the guideline you're citing, that's all. I can't revert my own edit since someone else edited it after that, and I don't want to mess up their edits too, so I don't know how you want to handle that, but I can mess with it and try to revert my edit, or if you want to do it I'm not going to undo it, just let me know if I need to undo it manually or something. - SudoGhost 05:37, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi :-) That sounds good actually! I like what you suggested. The only thing is, I think the term Lithuanian should redirect to Lithuania and not to Lithuanians because when you look at his family tree you can see he actually probably didn't have any Lithuanian origins, as in the Baltic ethnicity. It makes sense, but I think we can actually use Belarusian nobility, because that's what actualy feets his definition. When you read it it fits perfect his family! I think Ruthenian origin is the only origin he had as far as we know (though I would not be surprised if he had a bit of Polish blood as well. It someone would write a work about his family tree that would be really interesting), but I'm pretty sure he didn't have Lithuanian roots. The reason is because in the Great Duchy Belarusians (or Ruthenians) were the majority, the offical language Ruthenian. Most of the ruling families in Lithuania came from Ruthenian origin (Chodkiewicz family, Sapieha family), so the Ruthenians didn't see the need to marry Lithuanians due to the fact they would not gain anything from that (it was different in the Commonwealth, where Ruthenian and Lithuanian noble families wanted to mix with Polish families due to the fact the Polish families had more prestige and power). That's quite true what you said, it needs work, but I still think it fits more, for the reason that the article Ruthenian nobility talks about all the Ruthenian nobility from the Great Duchy of Lithuania, which means Belarusian and Ukrainain. The article Belarusian nobility is more specific the geographic sense. What it talks about is the Ruthenian nobility which lived in Belarus: "Noble people on Belarusian lands (Belarusian: шляхта, szlachta) were usually of Slavic (Ruthenian) origin in the east or of Baltic (Lithuanian in historical context, Litvin) origin in the west of the lands of what is now Belarus.", which shows they are sensitive to the idea that back then those were Ruthenians living in Belarus (though those Ruthenians are now called Belarusian).

Though to be honest, I'm quite flexible about this issue because I think it's the same thing so whatever is used is fine :-) I don't think any ethnic group has so much problems with defenition like the Belarusians. After those lands were taken by the Great Duchy the Ukrainans and Belarusians were one group called Ruthenians, then they became Litvins, then Russia changed it to Belarusians, and the way they see themselves changed over the years. Most Belarusians today see Russia as the natural friend, but originaly they were actualy literally running the Great Duchy in the Lithuania and were an integrated part of the Commonwealth. Place of Birth

Hi :-) Hope you are well! The funny part is, even in the Russian Wikipedia they have the Polish name is brackets, and in the Belarusian Wikipedia they don’t even have an article about this place. This place was a folwark near the town of Kosava. I found in some official websites in English from Belarus writing the area name as Merechevschina, the problem is, it’s actually how they pronounce it in Russian. The way to pronounce it in Belarusian would be Merachoushina, but when I write it like that on Wikipedia we get no results so I think we should take the Russian one due to the fact it’s the name even the Belarusians use (though I have to say, it’s irritating to think Belarusians say it like that because Belarusian was oppressed). Reki Kawahara as a notable author?

I do not wish to criticize your actions, but your recent edit to the Accel World page, linking Reki Kawahara with the reason that Kawahara is a notable author seems a bit off to me. Could you please, if it is not too much effort, explain to me as to why you believe that Kawahara is notable? Cześć Piotr, czy mogę się Ciebie poradzić w sprawie artykułu o Polsce na en-Wiki? Napisałem kilka dni temu artykuł na polskiej Wikipedii o pomnikach granic getta [13]] Jak sądzisz, czy jest on dostatecznie ency i byłby ciekawy dla anglosaskiego czytelnika? Mógłbym go w całości przetłumaczyć na angielski. Zauważyłem, że te pomniki i tablice budzą bardzo duże zainteresowanie osób z Polski i zagranicy, zwłaszcza jeżeli ktoś interesuje się II wojną światową. Natomiast ich lokalizacja, nawet w obrębie jednego upamiętnienia (ludzie dostrzegają tablice, ale przeoczają już żeliwne płyty w chodniku, albo odwrotnie) to czasem małe wyzwanie, i nie wszyscy zdają sobie sprawę, że jest to fragment większego projektu. Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

Dyngus Day

That should probably be under Śmigus-dyngus. Although it may be the case that "Dyngus Day" is the Polish-American version of the Polish-Polish Smigus-Dyngus day. Also, I'm not sure who this Melton fellah is, but the water-pouring (that's the "smigus" part) is not limited to guys doing it to girls (if anything, it's supposed to be the opposite!) - but generally, the water-pouring is done to anyone who doesn't pay a "ransom" (that's the "dyngus" part, which may be a German connection). Often it's a way for kids to get candy or treats from their parents and relatives. Melton's probably talking about some particular regional variety or something. I'm also pretty sure that there was no Slavic diety named "Dyngus" (definitely not "Dygnus"), although Polish Wikipedia says that some 16th century writer put a "Dyngus" in a "List of Devils from Poland".Volunteer Marek 01:06, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

You missed a single dash, but other than that the Polish text's good. One thing you should be careful with is the poems. I don't have the book by Silverman, but there's some chance that these may be copyrighted, in which case the translations would be copyrighted as well. If these are folk poems/songs and PD then there's no problem. On the other hand, if these are Silverman's translations that could be a copyvio as well (I'm not 100% sure ow it would work in this case). However, if you have the original Polish folk PD text of the poem you could do your own PD translation (or me or Piotrus could do it) and that would not be copyrighted. It's a little silly but that's how it works. It's like if there's some data out there and somebody makes a chart of it and puts it in a book. You can't take the chart from their book and put it in Wikipedia, it's copyrighted. But you can take the underlying data, put it in Excel and make your own chart, and put that in Wikipedia. I am trying to adopt the practice of standardizing on GA-quality work where I have a COI and wondered if I might request your services from time to time to provide feedback on articles that I want to bring up to GA, but may not be quite ready yet. It's not in article-space yet, but I think this proposed draft is getting close to GA. One of my concerns is that in order to follow DGG's feedback to add a detailed version history, I had to use some iffy sources like conference papers, but they may actually be very appropriate sources for the topic and given what they are used for. I am on the fence about it.
The original draft was promotional, so we actually dialed it back to something more neutral. ;-)
Of course your welcome to comment on the request for article-space as well as what it still needs to be GA ready if you have an interest in doing so. One thing I want to do better is finding editors that have a genuine interest in the area I'm working on, so it's less of a burden for them to collaborate. Dear Paul. Wikipedia articles have many authors. You can see them in the history tab (see Wikipedia:Article history) and through this useful tool: [14]. I have just translated some information from the Polish Wikipedia article; you can see who the authors were there in a similar fashion. While Polish Wikipedia has a better coverage of Polish topis, it still does not have an entry for Franciszek Lewiński. You can find some information in books (see [15]), and your best best may be the corresponding entry from the Polski Słownik Biograficzny (my list at User:Piotrus/List_of_Poles/Krzesinski-Lichtarowicz indicates he has an entry there). If you obtain a scan of his entry and sent it to me, I could try to write up an English bio for him; otherwise I am not sure when I will have an opportunity to obtain it myself (I already have a long to-do list). You could also contact somebody who has access to PSB, such as User:Picus viridis, through note that Wikipedians are not your friendly neighborhood librarians and we don't really fulfill requests other than for people who intend to contribute to Wikipedia (so if you don't intend to write for Wikipedia, I'd suggest you use an interlibrary loan or such to obtain the PSB entry). Hej, dzięki - opublikowane. Masz rację, ale artykuł jest raczej nietypowy, bo dotyczy zbioru pomników, trudno jest opisać to inaczej. Co do źródeł, to wszystko ma potwierdzenie w 100% w fundamentalnej pracy Engelking i Leociaka o warszawskim getcie i w dołączonych do niej 3 mapach, no i w oryginalnej treści samych tablic, opublikowanych w pozycji bibliografii #2. Cytowanie kilkanaście razy tej książki IMHO nie wyglądałoby zbyt dobrze. Dlatego nie będę zgłaszał do DYI, wielkie dzięki za tę sugestię. Zastanawiam się jeszcze - jeżeli artykuł jest w 95% tłumaczeniem z pl-Wiki, ale to ja jestem jego autorem, to czy powinienem na en-Wiki umieścić template Translated page?--Boston999 (talk) 17:33, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Sigh. :) I have to say I don't think that tone works either. The IP has not commented since, so I think it is unfair to suggest that the editor's rationale is, "I don't like it." Maybe he/she thinks that these reviews are not enough per WP:NF (which is why I have explained how WP:NF works in conjunction with WP:GNG on the user talk page). To me, the person is basically saying, these sources are not enough sufficient to establish notability, and the reason is unclear. Maybe it's a certain reading of WP:NF, for all we know. WikiCup 2013 January newsletter

Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader (Irish Citizen Army Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. Florida 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

  • United States Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
  • Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
  • Chicago HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.

Also, a quick mention of British Empire The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

The contents of article on Sonel.

OK. Może na dzień dobry, skoro dyskutuje 2 Polaków, proponuję przejść na język polski, choćby dlatego, że nie umkną żadne subtelności.

Co do strony - zwracam uwagę, że ktoś tutaj chce być bardziej chyba papieski od papieża - otrzymuję ostrzeżenia, że artykuł nt. firmy Sonel, stworzony przeze mnie na en.wikipedia.org nie jest poprawnym artykułem, ale informacją (reklamą?) w stylu Yellow Pages.

Nie mogę się z tym zgodzić.

Po pierwsze - treść. W artykule przedstawiłem informację, jakich nie przedstawia się w książkach telefonicznych - historię firmy, produkty dawno wycofane, ale takie, które trwale zakorzeniły się w środowisku osób związanych z energetyką, produkty charakterystyczne oraz to, czego nie widać (linia produkcyjna itp.).

Po drugie - dyskryminacja. Tworząc artykuł wzorowałem się głównie na artykule dotyczącym firmy Megger - moim zdaniem jest on bardziej "Yellow pages" niż mój artykuł, zawiera bowiem, oprócz rozbudowanej (ponad 100 lat istnienia, Sonel jedynie 20) historii choćby takie rzeczy, jak linki do dystrybutorów - podejście zupełnie handlowe.

Po trzecie - demokracja. Zastanówmy się w takim razie, idąc Pana tropem, co jeszcze należałoby usunąć z Wikipedii. Na dzień dobry widzę artykuły dotyczące podobnej branży - na przykład Fluke Corporation, Megger. Dalej - również (wg Pańskiej logiki) bardzo "Yellow Pages" są artykuły na przykład Ford Motor Company, Chrysler, Škoda Auto, Volkswagen... Idąc tym tropem dochodzimy do haseł takich jak Royal Dutch Shell, BP, Lukoil, później Procter & Gamble, docelowo również na naszej liście znajdzie się Disneyland. Każde z wymienionych przeze mnie haseł jest firmą (kompanią, koncernem, korporacją); od firmy przeze mnie opisywanej różnią się wielkością oraz umiejscowieniem - są to firmy międzynarodowe, których centrale mieszczą się w GB, USA...

I tu dochodzimy do sedna sprawy. Najwyraźniej komuś (i to Polakowi!) przeszkadza, żeby w angielskiej (= międzynarodowej) wersji wikipedii znalazły się informacje dotyczące firmy z Polski, która nie zajmuje się produkcją jajek, ale posiada coraz bardziej ugruntowaną pozycję w branży pomiarowo - energetycznej.

Czekam teraz na rzeczowe argumenty z Pana strony - bowiem czasy, kiedy Murzyn (przepraszam - Afroamerykanin) nie mógł wsiąść do autobusu w Alabamie dlatego, bo był czarny, skończyły się kilkadziesiąt lat temu.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Jagokogo (talk • contribs) 5:22 am, Today (UTC−5)
