WikiCup 2012 June newsletter

Apologies for the lateness of this letter; our usual bot wasn't working. We are now entering round 4, our semi-finals, and have our final 16. A score of 243 was required to reach this round; significantly more than 2011's 76 points, and only a little behind 2010's 250 points. By comparison, last year, 150 points in round 4 secured a place in the final; in 2010, 430 were needed. Commiserations to Pool A's Minas Gerais igordebraga (submissions), who scored 242 points, missing out on a place in the round by a whisker. However, congratulations to Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), whose television articles have brought him another round victory. Pool A's Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second overall, with an impressive list of biological did you knows, good articles and featured articles. Third overall was Pool D's New York City Muboshgu (submissions), with a long list of contibutions, mostly relating to baseball. Of course, with the points resetting every round, the playing field has been levelled. The most successful Pool was Pool D, which saw seven into the final round. Pool B saw four, C saw three and Pool A saw only the two round leaders.

A quick note about other competitions taking place on Wikipedia which may be of interest. There are 13 days remaining in the June-July GAN backlog elimination drive, but it is not too late to take part. August will also see the return of The Core Contest- a one month long competition first run in 2007. While the WikiCup awards points for audited content on any subject, The Core Contest about is raw article improvement, focussing heavily on the most important articles on Wikipedia. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Sources for maps

No can do. Most of them are hand-drawn and their only source could be cited as "general knowledge" or "Halibutt's nose". Probably the sourcing cited in this map is the most specific I could give. Sure, If I simply cloned some already-existing maps it would be easier to source them and it would most likely please all the paranoiacs, though it would also be a copyright infringement I believe. Anyway, if there are people who claim that Vistula is not a river and that Warsaw is in fact in the middle of Northern America - let them come and try to prove that. I believe it would be a waste of my time to do anything more. //Halibutt 12:56, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Zhmaylo Uprising

Hi, did review that DYK, but had to change that 12 and 20,000 men with 30 pieces of artillery cos there was only one ref there and couldn't verify if that was really it. All I found was 6,000 and 8,000 men with no mention of 30 pieces of artillery. Sorry if I bother, but you can always revert.......:) ! Central Committee failing

The reason why I have not responded is because I have done the things you've asked me to; i'm been waiting 2 weeks for you ti finish reviewing the article but you won't... Secondly, I have edited the article, and done what you've asked... I've added a background section, added the section to the apparatus and cleaned-up the article.. Secondly, I was gathering information, for instance, where the Central Committee I tried to find (but failed most of the time) information about where the departments met also, the Politburo, and not only were the members of the Central Committee.. I stumbled upon state country the other day and noticed your extensive comments at Talk:State country from a few years back about the title of the article. I think the issue is worth reviving. Hi P, have no problem with deletion of my article unless deletion is equal with everyone else's.. I have submitted my article as a test after seeing an example of self autobiography by someone else. While I have no problem with the article (link below)I would like to find out why the below mentioned article is allowed to stay on Wikipedia while mine exactly of the same nature is up for a deletion? AK: I assume (you didn't bother to say) that you're complaining about the deletion of Aldona Kmieć, and that you would like help understanding that. Is that correct?:
First, let me say that it's easy for you to contest that particular form of deletion. As a standard proposed deletion, you may simply remove the tag to say "I don't believe that that's a valid reason for deletion. The other editor may then put up the article for deletion at WP:AFD, but there would be a longer discussion.
Second, "why my article?", hard to say how the editor proposing deletion came across your article, I haven't looked. Before I discuss your article, please go read and understand the first sections of WP:GNG. This is the basic policy by which we attempt to consistently answer "should this article be kept on Wikipedia?" in cases like this. That policy talks about needing multiple reliable sources, independent of the subject, that provide in-depth coverage of the subject. The first reference is of questionable independence and does not provide in-depth coverage, the second provides no in-depth coverage. Finding a couple profiles of yourself in mainstream newspapers, magazines, or books would be a better choice for finding neutral coverage of the subject. References to two newspaper profiles of you added to your references would probably have completely avoided this issue.
Third, you ask whether notability rules are enforced equally at Wikipedia. The short answer is, despite our best efforts, no, of course not. There are over four million Wikipedia articles, edited by hundreds of thousands of editors and thousands of administrators, the vast majority of whom are doing the best they can. I would recommend WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS to you for reading.
Finally, with regard to Wojcik, I do see similar issues, I do think it's fair to ask why that article doesn't have independent sources, although at least one solid source [1] exists not in the article. If, after careful reading of WP:GNG, you decide that, in good faith, you feel it does not meet those requirements of WP:GNG, and you have carefully looked for additional sources that might help save the article first (this is required by WP:BEFORE), you may propose it for deletion as well, or start a discussion about it at AfD. --j⚛e deckertalk 15:25, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Goran Kukic article

I see you nominated my article about Goran Kukic to be deleted since not enough references are given. I will try to explain this. As you may notice, only most popular and young artists for Serbia have wikipedia article and can be found on the internet, while the older generation of very appreciated artists didn't pay much respect to this type of communication or promotion. Goran is preparing a big exhibiton for the end of this year and as introduction is having several exhibitions around Serbia. Therefore, he decided to change his PR strategies and also to be active on the internet. He is launching his website in one week. Also, The Artist's association in Serbia, which are mentioned in the article do not even have the lists of their artists on their websites, therefore I cannot find any besides personal and hardcopy references.

Please advise what should I do.

Dear zojaku. Please note that Wikipedia is not a vehicle for promotion, it is an encyclopedia. Artists need to meet the criteria of WP:ARTIST to warrant an article. If you can improve the article to satisfy that, we can keep the article. We're approaching the beginning of 2012's final round. Pool A sees Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) as the leader, with 300 points being awarded for the featured article Bivalvia, and Pool B sees Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) in the lead, with 10 good articles, and over 35 articles eligible for good topic points. Pool A sees New York City Muboshgu (submissions) in second place with a number of articles relating to baseball, while Pool B's Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions) follows Grapple X, with a variety of contributions including the high-scoring, high-importance featured article on the 2010 film Pride & Prejudice. Ruby2010, like Grapple X, also claimed a number of good topic points; despite this, not a single point has been claimed for featured topics in the contest so far. The same is true for featured portals.

Currently, the eighth-place competitor (and so the lowest scorer who would reach the final round right now) has scored 332, more than double the 150 needed to reach the final round last year. In 2010, however, 430 was the lowest qualifying score. In this competition, we have generally seen scores closer to those in 2010 than those in 2011. Let's see what kind of benchmark we can set for future competitions! I see I mentioned you as "ex-(?) leader of the EEML." I did not consider this offensive, as it was pretty clear from the EEML evidence and I remember that someone styled himself "ringleader".

However. If you give me your word, explicitely, that you, with the closure of the EEML arbcom, had definitely and ultimately left the group that evolved around you, Volunteer Marek and Molobo, I will take that mention out. Australian Paralympic Committee Wikipedian in Residence

Hi. Sorry it took so long to respond. The Wikiversity page was the initial tender. It hasn't been updated much since then, despite the project having continued and my coming back on to it in an informal role since I submitted my thesis. I don't think we have a page that spells it out clearly. If necessary, it could be done. I just don't have the time and effort to do that until after the Paralympics. : / There were always some structural issues for how to put it into WMF space as the project was designed to be worked on across multiple projects. (And it has: Wikinews, Wikiversity, English Wikipedia, Commons, Simple Wikipedia, one or two things on Wiktionary. Ratschiller

As you recommend to do with a Pole, I'll say "Tea - who you - yeah bunny!". Ale - zdaje mi sie, ze jest to niedobrze... Sorry, I can't easily get the proper dyacrytical marks. Anyhow: you intervened in the article "Ratschiller", which I created. I'm an Italian, with no sympathy for national oppression (in this case, the Fascists' attempt to de-Germanize South Tyrol) and a lot of sympathy for Poles. That is why I created the article.

Now some robot finds it is not encyclopedical enough.

Boze swiety! You inserted the notability warning and I hadn't realized it! May I signify that 1. Ratschiller is the only German WWII partisan in Italy; 2. He should be in the Guinness Book of Records for deserting 3 times from 2 different armies; 3. He had a Polish mother and spoke Polish at home. This last point is not very notable, I'm afraid, but I'm biased.
There are clues in a site you mention as to your being from Poznan, where I spent a couple of months at the Akademia Ekonomiczna on a scientific exchange as far back as 1977. Pan Brerus (talk) 21:19, 21 August 2012 (UTC)


Ratschiller again

I've read your message, but the English Wikipedia discussion page is an enigma to me, so I'm posting here.

Ratschiller identified himself as an ethnic German in spite of his Italian citizenship. He was an Italian partisan because he fought in Italy for the liberation of Italy, but he was a German by self-identified ethnicity. And a half-Pole, of course. BTW Adam Mickiewicz was born in Czarist Russia in a similar ethnicity-citizenship situation; and Joseph Conrad was an English novel writer in spite of being a Pole. With nationality issues, I'm afraid we need some fuzzy logic.

The Guinness Book of Records only certifies living people, much as the Nobel Prize does -- and usually on their own application and after repeating the feat they claim world championship about, under tightly controlled circumstances. You can't repeat WWII (or so I hope...).

Ratschiller's trajectory during WWII is really uncommon. After the war he was a notable geologist, but I don't have any competence in that field so I can't provide much info about his career. But it's a Wiki, some other people might be able to.

The Italian Wikipedia has never raised the issue of notability. I am not the initiator of the Italian article.

Nor am I a relation of Ratschiller's. The blood in my vein is 93.75% Italian, with a Hungarian great-great-grandmother providing the rest (thank you, Granny!).

WikiCup 2012 August newsletter

The final is upon us! We are down to our final 8. A massive 573 was our lowest qualifying score; this is higher than the 150 points needed last year and the 430 needed in 2010. Even in 2009, when points were acquired for mainspace edit count in addition to audited content, 417 points secured a place. That leaves this year's WikiCup, by one measure at least, our most competitive ever. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) once again finishes the round in first place, leading Pool B. Grapple X writes articles about television, and especially The X-Files and Millenium, with good articles making up the bulk of the score.
  2. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) led Pool A this round. Fourth-place finalist last year, Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, and has reached the final primarily off the back of his massive number of did you knows.
  3. Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions) was second in Pool B. Ruby2010 writes primarily on television and film, and scores primarily from good articles.
  4. Scotland Casliber (submissions) finished third in Pool B. Casliber is something of a WikiCup veteran, having finished sixth in 2011 and fourth in 2010. Casliber writes on the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. Over half of Casliber's points this round were bonus points from the high-importance articles he has worked on.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came second in Pool A. Also writing on biology, especially marine biology, Cwmhiraeth received 390 points for one featured article (Bivalvia) and one good article (pelican), topping up with a large number of did you knows.
  6. New York City Muboshgu (submissions) was third in Pool A. Muboshgu writes primarily on baseball, and this round saw Muboshgu's first featured article, Derek Jeter, promoted on its fourth attempt at FAC.
  7. Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) was fourth in Pool A. She writes on a variety of topics, including horses, but this round also saw the high-importance lettuce reach featured article status.
  8. Canada Sasata (submissions) is another WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist in 2009 and 2010. He writes mostly on mycology.

However, we must also say goodbye to the eight who did not make the final, having fallen at the last hurdle: Russia GreatOrangePumpkin (submissions), England Ealdgyth (submissions), England Calvin999 (submissions), Poland Piotrus (submissions), North Carolina Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), Cherokee Nation The Bushranger (submissions) and North Macedonia 1111tomica (submissions). We hope to see you all next year.

Photo request

Do you ever upload photos? If so, could you try to get a picture for me? The National Park Service announced today that they've added a Pittsburgh house to the National Register of Historic Places, and if I remember rightly, this "new" historic site is the only one on our Pittsburgh list that doesn't have a photo. I've put the List of Poles on my user page. but I have an extreme amount of subjects to focus on of course, wish I had more time to eat up that list. I am about to start a Bibliography of encyclopedias which is explained on my page and why it is needed above List of encyclopedias.
