Jan Czyński

Hello Piotrus. My Polish being effectively non-existent, can you tell me if pl:Jan Czyński was in Paris in the 1830s. I assume so - "great emigration" I did understand. I'm trying to figure out if he is the person who co-authored a book called Le Roi des Paysans (published in Paris in 1838). My Belgian source calls this person Jean Czynski. Many thanks in advance! Well Estonians story is simple. Most of them came when the Russian media attack started against Estonia during the Bronze soldier of Tallinn incident. Some articles were really horrible at the time, Estonian flag under Estonia was replaced with nazi german one all the time, etc. Many editors came in. Some old editors were drawn into the spin, etc. The first sock/meatpuppetry accusations came from the fact that estonian editors were quite same minded. Estonian media gave detailed updates on situation and many people like myself were also in the center of the situation so saw the incidents with their own eyes. So there was not much room for debate if someone wrote that the soldier was dismantled sawn to pieces peed on or what ever as we knew it wasn't and thats why we all reverted that. So as people knew something for sure they ofcourse acted the same.

When the so called Established Editors came into frame the things got more serious and they tried to eliminate some opposing editors. They succeeded on some cases. Mostly humble editors who were here before to edit encyclopedia not to battle. Others didn't give up so easily. Now as the things have cooled down a bit, the editors are quite hard working and Estonia related articles are better than they have ever been.

Estonian (and now Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, etc.) editors are also observing each others work to assist where necessary. It's sometimes happens that they also meet at AFD's and other votes for similar reason. Some editors are also available on #wikipedia channel so we have held discussions there. I can't speak for other editors because I don't know, but I don't have any sockpuppets and I don't think any other one has any either.

The RFCU process makes me a bit sad. I shuffled over some old RFCU cases and the methodology they use seems like extremely unreliable. It seems they use some very mean statistics in style: 1) Assuming every 1000000th person in world is editing english wikipedia. 2) Assuming estonia has 1.4m people. 3) Estonia can have 14 wikipedians. 4) As the threshold is already exceeded, every new wikipedian must be a sockpuppet of the earlier editors. Suva's point regarding information dissemination speed is very interesting.

Estonia is a relatively small country, with about three or four – depending on the criteria – primary population centres. If anything significant happens in any of them, a significant percentage of Estonia's populations would be able to see it, the local news would be all over it, and if national news gets interested, can arrive within hours. Thus, it's customary that Estonian news is operative, has redundancy – because multiple news sources often report on the same events – and can be easily backed up with eyewitness accounts.

Russian Federation, on the other hand, is the largest – area-wise – country on Earth, with numerous timezones and hundreds of major population centres in it. Most of newsworthy events in Russia, unless they happen in Moscow or Sankt Petersburg, would have only a very limited percentage of the whole population as direct eyewitnesses, and due to the great distances and poor infrastructure, it's prohibitively expensive to send a national reporter residing in, say, Yaroslav, to Vladivostok to cover something as insignificant as, say, a riot. Accordingly, it's customary that Russian news makes use of division of labour region-wise, and depends on relatively long chains of newswire relays, with only limited redundancy. The resulting lack of redundancy allows the Chinese telephone effect to creep in rather readily.

Even if we would put away purely cultural issues, such difference is, to some degree, dictated by the economics and infrastructure.

Accordingly, when an internationally interesting event in Estonia happens, it's only natural that news-following Estonians have a relatively similar – and relatively factual – overview of it, close to real time, but Russian news coverings deviate in various ways, and thus, Russian folks would have many different views. I've gone through the article trying to get it back into shape. I didn't feel I could cut that large chunk of material that was added to the lead, because even though the information was all covered and reffed in the article already, it is properly reffed and the editor took care over it. So I've put it in a note for the time being.

One problem I haven't solved is that someone added Soviet casualty figures to the lead. Nothing wrong with that in principle, but the figures were only from one source (which they took from our infobox). I have not yet been able to think of a way of summarising the varied figures for Russian casualties pithily (and good expression is essential; blocks of figures tramelled with ifs and buts are alienating to readers). For the time being, therefore, I've cut both Polish and Soviet figures from the lead; but this is unsatisfactory because the PoW figures are still there, sitting uncomfortably now. If you can think of a way to express both sets of figures briefly and accurately for the lead, please do so. In this, I think the article is a victim of its own success because, unlike books (which seem to choose the particular set of figures which suit their bent), it tries to inform the readers of the whole range of different possible figures. This is invaluable and unique but is not easy to summarise in the lead.qp10qp 04:25, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

RE:Relevance?

I don't believe I did misunderstand the situation. Irpen repeateadly asked about the credentials of the website about the Warsaw Uprising, Tymek answered with attacks on Irpen's general editing patterns (and his alleged "Soviet nationality"). It wasn't until this edit of yours that Irpen's question was truly answered. I wasn't saying that these websites violeted WP:RS, but I believe one can expect people who add non-English sources to give some evidence for their reliability. That's all Irpen expected, as far as I can tell. Obviously the uncivility in this discussion is merely a consequence of a general dispute about Eastern European topics on the English Wikipedia, but in this case, I don't think Irpen's conduct was the problem.--Carabinieri 21:59, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

To be honest, I didn't really see the problem with the references in the first place; they're certainly no worse than many other articles that have been used at DYK with no problem. Krakow

Hi Piotrus, there seems to be an ongoing edit-war between some editors, and because there is a GA-nominee procedure I don't know which version is good, but there are some editors proposing Cracow or Krakow in the leading of the article which I think is against wikipedia naming conventions. ≈Tulkolahten≈^≈talk≈ 21:32, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

I think that RM is pointless too. It will end in the never-ending dispute as many times before in another articles. But I am concerned about the fact that in more and more articles there is dispute about the nationality. Typical example is Copernicus, entire planet knows he was a Polish, but on wikipedia he was an European based on the creaky fact there was "no nationality between year ...", try to do it anywhere and you will end as a vandal ... :-/ ≈Tulkolahten≈^≈talk≈ 23:16, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

The point made by Tulkolahten touches on one of the weakest points of Wikipedia. By design, we are forced to accept revisionist viewpoints (providing that they’re verifiable), while attempting to defend those expressed by leading encyclopedias. All this is done in the name of equality among editors some of whom would have never been allowed to contribute anything anywhere else outside of here. Take a look at how Gdańsk is being battered these days, not just Kraków, or Copernicus... and so many others. --Poeticbent talk 01:19, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

I certainly would prefer the expression Category:Antisemite. But the ojection to that would be that the (imaginary) grocer next door to you, whom you know, but is a noboy would qualify for inclusion in our classification. Okay – now you're sounding like me. The only nagging thought I've got is both cats will have small content. Once I get to GG#10, I'm not doing any more. The pipesorting used for the gazettes kept them all in order, and grouped, so I didn't know which way to lean... Thanks.

I ask, as the way I'm reading the tea leaves, Bohemia, Austria, Bavaria, and Franconia is the local of the second major thread, Russia, Poland, the eastern Baltic, seem to be missing in EFs planning so far as I can see so far. That makes the thread South and East Central Europe, in my reckoning. It also begs the question as to whether 'South Europe Thread' will include the balkans and/or Greece! But I digress! Ghetto Benches

I happen to speak Polish. My family come from the Polish Ukraine (before WWII). I never heard of this usage until to brought it to my attention today. I really do not know anything about it - except what I'm reading here now. Sure, if we would consider this talk of yours as a printed article - we might accept your view. User:Nihil novi suggested another view, that I do fully support. This one man show, you did on a PLC talk page - well it's a nice expertise, but hardly can be called a compromise. Confederal means - that orders issued by the central government could be blocked by local authorities. 1632-verse matters

I've been away for a bit (Yes I remember the above exchange too! <g>), but fixed up 1632_Editorial_Board some today and stubbed in Ring of Fire II. Can you find the time to proof me and add anything you know. I've been unable to do much browsing in Baen's Bar or Erics site since forever... (Christmas, I think!) and don't get the new Gazettes either (I'm gonna change THAT)!

Wouldn't mind some help with 1632 characters/places/institutions etc. either. Keep an eye on 1632 series templates too. I'm going to be giving these pages a lot of work the next few weeks if my plans work out, complete with page cites (e.g. See {{Cite 1633pb}}, et. al.). A mistake again - Sorry

Dear Piotr:

A couple of weeks ago the User:BetacommandBot send me back the Image:Herb Holownia.PNG, it seems I did a mistake in the license. It should be GDFL-cc-2.5 and I added a Fair use tag I do not know why. It is a Tadeusz Gajl´s work uploaded by Emax time ago with a mistake in the name. He put Holowina instead of Holownia. I do not remember why I did the mistake, may be I was drunk this day, since I am a Polish-Uruguayan (it is a joke).

I did the same thing with Image:Herb Brochwicz.jpg time ago without any problem. (The proper name was Brochwicz and was uploaded erroneously as Brochowich) Anyway I do not know how to repair the damage. There is a proper version Image:POL COA Hołownia.svg already available so may be no important to keep or to delete this one.

May you take care of this matter?

Not all originated from the same source I'm afraid, but the ones I used for the update came from a graph posted at www.stat.gov.pl (PDF small download) cited already.

I've finished copyediting the article. There's a few unclear areas, particularly in the latter sections of the article dealing with Boleslaw's retreat from Kiev and the return of Yaroslav to Kiev, and I hesitated to make any changes that weren't supported by the text. Someone else moved the pictures to the left side... I think they looked better on the right, but that's just me. I'd still support putting an infobox with the basic information at the top. I really like infoboxes as a way of giving basic information to a reader unfamiliar with the subject, and that map would make a great image header. It seems to me that the article is quite comprehensive now as of World War II -> Cold War. It may miss the brief Soviet occupations of Japanese territories and Norway, but otherwise.

The period which now needs more information is pre-World War II. There are books in Google books which use the term "Soviet occupation of Ukraine ~1920" and so. I have no background information on the 1920 Polish-Soviet War & Ukraine, so it's hard for me to look write about it. Did the Soviets occupy parts of Poland during the war? A particular interest is also Mongolian People's Republic from the 1920s, as many sources refer it as Soviet occupation also. Then the article should be pretty much covering all Soviet occupations, though Yugoslavia in World War II should be looked at also. --Pudeo⺮ 11:00, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Sorry to keep bothering you, but should the articels Polish minority in Ukraine and Ukrainian minority in Poland be titled "Poles in Ukraine" and "Ukrainians in Poland", following the lead of Russians in Ukraine and Ukrainians in Russia and so on? Also, are these articles going to include content on the history of said minorities, such as Ukrainians in Polish commonwealth and the like? If you read over Russians in Ukraine or the other article, they are very developed and go into demographics and history. Or are they just about recent census and events? Ohio university sociology wikiproject articles

Sure- I can reply here. I have a list of the projects, linked on my user page. The students are in charge of updating links to their article and to their own userpages under the corresponding page, and many of them have followed through on that so far. I will ask them to add the school project tag to their article talk pages. I am dismayed to hear about the speedy deletion of the Causation and study design page, but I am sure that it can be resolved. In general I think the students are taking the task seriously and are contributing value. We tried to identify stubs for them to start with, although some topics like Social roles and Roles (Sociological theory) are overlapping, and in my initial search I only found the former. Nonetheless even the moderately developed articles tend to be entirely divorced from actual research on the topic, so connecting to that research remains an important contribution for the students to make. I expect that we will continue to experience some bumps in terms of formatting and procedures for the next week or so as the 120 students get up to speed on basic Wikipedia practice. Thanks! Both of my fall courses are participating, Intro with 98 students and Methods with 22. I guess we have about 28? projects under way, with 3 to 5 students per article. I found topics by looking through the list of stubs in the Sociology WikiProject and by looking through the textbooks I was using for the courses. I then searched for the articles on those topics looking for topics that were stubs, missing or otherwise needed a great deal of work. I asked students to name three topics from this list that they were interested in, but there was a great deal of overlap, so I had to match most of the groups up with topics myself. Fortunately for us, there are plenty of important and interesting topics with little or no development in the sociology domain of Wikipedia. A number of the pages are moving along nicely and I expect that several will be quite good by late November.--Htw3 20:32, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

I am just starting with w:commons:Category:Coats of arms of families of Poland in Diocesan Museum in Sandomierz, I did the easy ones. The w:commons:Image:Muzeum Diecezjalne - 32.JPG is really something, the coat of arms is quarterly with an innescutcheon. It is not clear enough, but it has two crests, one is Topor (may be the Starykon crest too) so the innescutcheon must be the axe of Topor (or the horse of Starykon - but I believe it is an axe). The innescutcheon seems to be party per pale also but I do not see it clearly. The second crest is not very clear neither. Do you remember something more about the drawing? Do you know to whom did belong this coat of arms?

I did an interesting description in the coat of arms of Olesko castle (and town) already w:commons:Image:Polish coats of arms in Olesko castle entrance.PNG. I would like to do the same thing.

I will try to detail the coats of arms from pictures. I will write you again about them. Regards.

In certain times and places certain groups of people happen to seize control over some rather small area and start imposing their "majority" views there by all means possible. But as time flies by "majorities" quite often turn out to be nothing but marginal dead end of evolution as we know from multiple examples from not so distant historical times. AFAIR registered users' IP adressess are logged in Wikipedia database. You can ask someone (I'm not sure who, I'm not so aware of Wiki) to public those adressess and compare them to my current one.
