Recent changes

  • Some image thumbnails now load faster on mobile. They also take up less bandwidth. [1]

Problems

  • Last week's MediaWiki version was late on some wikis. [2]

Changes this week

  • Special:Notifications will have "mark as read" buttons for each day. The non-JavaScript version will get it this week. A JavaScript version will come later. [3]
  • Wikis can now locally decide what wikitext they want the signature button to produce. [4]
  • A one-time welcome message for users will now be shown in the wikitext editor. This will include existing users. [5]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from May 17. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from May 18. It will be on all wikis from May 19 (calendar).

Future changes

  • Using self-closing tags like <div/> and <span/> to mean <div></div> and <span></span> will not work in the future. Templates and pages that use these tags should be fixed. When Phabricator ticket T134423 is fixed these tags will parse as <div> and <span> instead. This is normal in HTML5. [6]

EF Variables

Hi MA, I don't think there is, but am I missing anything here. Can we interrogate added_links or the like EF variables to see what categories they are in? There is a proposal to do something about edits that are to disambig pages. I know these are just "articles" from the mediawiki point of view and do not have consistent names (e.g. the ones with issues do not contain the string "disambiguation"), so I'm trying to find something to latch on to for real time analysis. @Xaosflux: Cool idea but I don't think an edit filter will work. added_links is for external links, but either way you can't get any info about the target page. The proposal is sensible, but I don't see a way to implement it without JavaScript. It's definitely doable, but could be very slow, and we'd have to figure out a solid UI, as Window.confirm won't be too nice, and OOjs UI is a lot of code to do a simple thing. My thoughts are to talk with the VisualEditor team and get it added to core. It's only a matter of time before much of the mainspace editing will be done in VE, except these old-timers of course. The wikitext diehards can learn to review their edits or install a script like User:Anomie/linkclassifier, or User:ערן/autocomplete.js — MusikAnimal talk 23:51, 18 May 2016 (UTC)
Well I'll be. Turns out the core MediaWiki adds the CSS class mw-disambig to links to disambiguation pages!!! Mind = blown. See Special:Permalink/715705562#Reproposing DisambiguationLinks. And I actually don't think the OOjs would be too hard — MusikAnimal talk 00:03, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
Actually, you can use the new_html EF variable and look for mw-disambig. Thing is old_html has been disabled for performance reasons, so we wouldn't be able to tell if the disambig link was introduced by the given edit. Additionally I think parsing new_html for every edit in the mainspace will be super expensive :( — MusikAnimal talk 00:29, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
Yea, I was hoping EF would work, but the data isn't really there, making a super expensive EF isn't a good solution for something like this either. Blocked of User:CPAT

Thanks! This definitely has been the most fun and rewarding Wikimedia tech project I've worked on. I hope to continue to improve and expand upon it, thanks to input and encouragement from the community. Bluerasberry one new "secret" project (beta) in the Pageviews suite of tools is Massviews Analysis. This allows you to provide a Page Pile ID and get the view counts and averages for those pages. I understand this Page Pile system is popular amongst outreach programs, so thought it might interest you. Feedback welcomed. I know there's the annoying API limitations, so usage is throttled, but hopefully that will be resolved soon — MusikAnimal talk 20:39, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
This is fantastic and what I needed. A lot of people need this. I created a page pile, generated a massviews analysis for a group of articles, and copy/pasted the results in my own spreadsheet report which links to individual pageviews reports.
I need documentation for this and am willing to write some. It would be best to centralize feedback in a community place along with community-maintained instructions and guides. Can you tell me - do you already have documentation pages for either pageviews or massviews? If you do not, then I want to start them on meta. @Bluerasberry: The "massviews" tool is a work in progress. First, you'll be able to download the data as CSV, so you don't have to do that yourself. If by documentation you mean the URL structure, then yes, I'll have that documented for you as well. I'm working on some fixes, but hope to have the new version out soon. @Bluerasberry: With toollabs:langviews and toollabs:massviews you can now export as CSV or JSON. Each app has a different (but similar) URL structure, so just click on the "URL structure" link at the bottom. Additionally after you run a query, there's a "permalink" at the bottom. Copy and paste that URL for a permanent link to the data you see. E.g. by default the tool shows the latest data. Finally, for Massviews I'm going to add the ability to view pages in a category, and also a system where you can create a list of pages on a wiki page, and have the tool go off of that. I am slow to follow some of this - I am not sure what you mean by documentation for the URL structure. Whatever it is, I want it when you have it.
I am interested in documentation explaining the tools for casual users. This kind of documentation would explain what the tool does, who might use it, and why, then link to whatever technical documentation exists. At meta:Community Tech/Pageview stats tool there is a sort of introduction to the Pageview stats tool. Are you aware of other prose descriptions of what you are doing, or anything related, anywhere else?
I am thinking of writing a prose explanation of this content on meta. I started a general page on the concept collecting information about tools at meta:Traffic reporting. I was just recently excited about a tool with similar functionality to what your tool does, meta:Wikipedia Tools for Google Spreadsheets, so I made a page for it on meta to establish a place for discussion and referencing the tool. Do you already have any base prose explanations for anything that you have done?

(←) @Bluerasberry: There's more general documentation for the main Pageviews tool at WP:PAGEVIEWS. My work encompasses five individual tools that provide Pageviews data. Browse to toollabs:pageviews (the main app) and see the links at the bottom. We also have "Langviews", "Topviews", "Siteviews" and "Massviews". There will be a short description of what the tool does under the heading. E.g. if you go to toollabs:topviews you'll see "Most viewed pages of a project" under the "Topviews Analysis" heading. Meanwhile toollabs:siteviews shows the total pageviews of the given projects (or unique devices, which can be changed in the "Data source" dropdown).

Each tool also has it's own FAQ, just click the link at the bottom. E.g. for Pageviews it's at toollabs:pageviews/faq, for Massviews it's toollabs:massviews/faq. Finally, the "URL structure" documents how you can link to specific data. Typically you'll just use the tool and copy the "Permalink" at the bottom to get a permanent link to the data you are seeing, but if you want to construct the URL yourself you can go by that documentation. E.g. perhaps you're wondering how to link to the tool on your home wiki, have a look at toollabs:pageviews/url_structure (or the /url_structure for the other tools) and it explains how to do this.

  • There is now a standard way to get the target of a redirect page from a Lua module. [11]

Problems

  • A new way to handle rollback was introduced. It broke some tools and scripts and was reverted. This will be re-planned after review. [12][13]
  • CentralNotice didn't work in some older browsers. This has now been fixed. [14]

Changes this week

  • When you edit a file or category page with the visual editor the rest of the page will be shown in its normal place. [15]
  • The Translate extension will get an edit summary field. [16]
  • A change to the <charinsert> feature could break some user scripts. Contact Bawolff if the "click to insert special characters" links in the edit window break on your wiki. [17][18]
  • Elasticsearch will be upgraded on Wikimedia wikis this week. This should not affect you, but if you have problems with the search function this is probably the reason. [19]

Pageview Analysis

Thanks for nice tool. Can we compare combined pageviews of topics/items across different languages version of wikipedias? So we can know the most viewed topic/item across all language versions of Wikipedia. Wikidata can be helpful and your tool already provides Langviews. @Nizil Shah: Sorry for taking so long to get back to you! If I understand you correctly, by items you mean using toollabs:langviews but for multiple pages? I'm not sure what you mean by "topics". Either way, the short answer for langviews is no, unfortunately :( The API is super overloaded and we currently have to cap everything at 500 requests per use of the tool. That means 500 pages, so if you had 10 pages that you wanted to see combined pageviews across all languages, that could amount to 2,500+ individual API requests -- something we simply can't allow, or if we did, it'd take a considerably long time to process. I know it's annoying, but one workaround would be to use Langviews for each article you want, export as CSV, then use your CSV software (such as Excel or Google Sheets) to compute the totals and averages. That's about the best I can offer. I believe the analytics team is taking more measures to improve API performance, but for the time being we'll have to deal with these limitations. Hope you don't mind if I abduct this header for an issue (I don't have a GitHub account)... I noticed that the pageview graph is smoothed, which is not appropriate for this type of data. It implies that the data are continuous on both axes between each pair of daily values (which is not true), plus the line goes under the x axis to negative values when you have two consecutive days of 0 views followed by a day with large non-zero value (which is simply ridiculous). I suggest introducing simple straight lines between points again, or, even more appropriate, changing it into a bar graph. — Yerpo Eh? 09:38, 25 May 2016 (UTC)

@Yerpo: You've sold me on ditching the smoothing! Though while the existing data is not continuous, the numbers they represent are, right? E.g. pageviews happen 24/7 and not just once a day. On a purely aesthetic level, would you find it more appealing? Very curious and appreciative of the feedback. As for the chart type, you can change this at the bottom-left, and your preference will be retained on the same computer and browser. People seem to miss the links at the bottom. Any suggestions on how to eloquently make them more prominent? Maybe I could change them to be buttons? Thanks! — MusikAnimal talk 15:22, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
Well, the pageviews do happen 24/7, but if they are only counted once per day, we do not know how this cumulative value progressed throughout the day. Perhaps there were one or two views until 8 PM, then a thousand in 15 minutes because the subject was in the news. Whereas the line implies regular growth. Also, they are not truly continuous, but happen in the steps of 1. If you have 0 one day and 1 the next day, the line will imply fractions of pageviews between that. To be honest, straight lines could also be interpreted as representing continuous data, but there's less chance of misunderstanding because it is normally assumed that the lines serve only to connect the dots and make them more visible (even more fool-proof way would be to make the lines dashed). I think that's more important than aesthetics.
You're right, I completely missed the option to change graph type. Perhaps it would be better if you moved the line with settings beneath the field for entering the page(s)? — Yerpo Eh? 17:40, 25 May 2016 (UTC)

This is only the third time my tools have gone down, and just like the last two times, I'm on holiday! So weird that they choose to go to into hibernation when I'm away, I guess they just miss me... Anyway I'll have them booted back up on 31 May when I'm home from wikibreak. World Wide Web

Hello there!

Edit protection had been instigated for a period on the World Wide Web page due to edit warring and suspected sock puppetry. I note that the protection has been removed - and the problem has almost immediately returned. I would be grateful if you would consider reinstating edit protection for a longer period.

Another bizarre problem

Now you're back, please take a look at this post and let me know if you have any ideas. Just fyi, if you stretch your brain way back, I was going to try Chrome to fix my age-old lag problem, which I finally decided was due to Firefox, or at least something about my Firefox. Wow that is strange! Hopefully the VPT folks can help. Off the top of my head I'm not sure what could be causing it. There's no reason why that would happen; Chrome and Firefox use different rendering engines, so to speak, but they both conform to web standards. The fact that it only happens on Wikipedia tells me it's not Chrome. Maybe there's some script you have that's targeted toward Firefox (or Chrome)? — MusikAnimal talk 16:11, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
No, I think the thread will die. Whatever scripts I have are because other users recommended them and I found them useful. I haven't changed my scripts, and the mess started happening only after I downloaded and installed Chrome. I've left out intermediate details because so little of it makes sense. At some point I'll probably forget the details because I spent hours on Sunday working on it trying different things. I can give you the details if you wish, but I didn't want to tire people out, so I figured I'd just start with the present problem rather than trace the history.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:42, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
Overall the best troubleshooting tip would be to try editing Wikipedia on a different computer entirely. Use whatever browser you're comfortable with, so Firefox but with no add-ons. If you see the same problems we know it's your settings on Wikipedia. If you don't see the same issues, try adding your preferred Firefox add-ons or extensions and see if the problem surfaces. If you end up with the same browser settings and still no issues, we know it's the other computer. From there I would try reinstalling Firefox on the original computer, starting with no add-ons, and repeat the aforementioned steps.
Your time here on Wikipedia is highly valued by the community; you shouldn't have to deal with these headaches. Contributing should be easy and straightforward, so as much of a pain in the ass it is may be, it's probably worth the time to figure out what's going on. Do you attend any Wikimedia events? There might be some tech-savvy folks there who could help. If you live in the NYC area or are able to attend NYC events, I'm already upset that we haven't met, and once we do meet and you apologize for not coming to prior events, I'd be happy to sit down and help you :) — MusikAnimal talk 17:57, 31 May 2016 (UTC)
I don't think it's a FF problem (I think the lag is). I think it's a Chrome problem. Some recent history. I downloaded and installed Chrome. Wikipedia suddenly had all sorts of pieces that were italicized. Searching the web released a large number of people with similar problems and with Google doing zilch to help. So, everyone was trying different things. If it was easy and at least kind of plausible, I tried it. Nothing worked. I then saw a developers forum that suggested two steps. The first was to uninstall Press Reader. Surprisingly, I had Press Reader installed, although for the life of me I can't remember why I installed it, and I don't use it. So, that seemed a no brainer. I uninstalled it. The second stop was to apply a "patch" provided by Press Reader. That couldn't be done because the link to the patch no longer worked, and I couldn't find the patch. At that point I get hazy as to why I did what I did, but most people said to install fonts for those that were italicized. Everyone said to download them from a trusted site, but no one, including good old Microsoft, mentioned a trusted site. So, I had a friend who has the same OS as I do e-mail them to me. Then I had a problem I hadn't had in a very long time, which was a Windows system folder, in this case c:Windows/font, wouldn't let me touch certain fonts (not all of them, mind you, only a few) because it was system protected and I didn't have admin privileges, which is nonsense as I'm the only user on my PC and I have all privileges. Anyway, through doing a system restore to get back to where I was at an earlier point and then installing only the font that was supposedly corrupt (Arial regular), which it let me do, I was able to get to where I am now. Chrome has the article title problem, and Firefox, which throughout, was unaffected by most of my changes and worked as it always had, had to have a setting changed to make it work: Options/Content/Fonts & Colors/Advanced. Before I had the box "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" checked. I had to uncheck it to make Firefox work, although I believe now, outside of Wikipedia, I get fonts I didn't get before because I changed it. Not a big deal, but I have no idea why FF needed that change. So much for not giving you detail.
As for New York, I'm thousands of miles away, and I have no intention of going there for any reason in the foreseeable future. So I don't have to apologize. :-) --Bbb23 (talk) 18:36, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Bbb23 it's true I reached 100K according to the edit counting tools a while back, but going by the API I'm at exactly 100K, and you're still at 98597, so yeah, I win! :D The counters go off of the replication database, which for some reason always has a higher edit count. Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.

Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives.

A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Massview analysis - alphabetization strangeness?

  1. Run massview analysis on pile 3276.
  2. Alphabetize in the usual way
  3. The first letters are alphabetized.
  4. Looking at the second letter, there is not alphabetizing. I am not sure how these entries are sorted and see no pattern, except that they are sort-of alphabetized by second letter with some items not.

I am unable to make this work for me. The first column is titled "#". I fail to recognize what is being sorted here, but it is not the original order. I am examining pagepile 3282 which starts with words that have first letters I, I, S, A, so original order is retained in the page pile. In Massviews, first letter alphabetization happens in the "#" column, but I cannot see a sense in the order beyond that because it is not alphabetical beyond the first letter. I see no relationship between the # column and the pagepile order.

@Bluerasberry: Ah, I am sorry! You are correct it is not in the original order. It looks like the PagePile API is doing the weird sorting. I will ask User:Magnus Manske if there is a way we retain the original through the API. I am tickled by every part of your involvement in this. I can now submit traffic reports to partner organizations quickly and easily. I used to use Henrik's tool hundreds of times on individual articles, and lots of other Wikipedians did the same. This is the basis for expert partnerships, and I am thrilled that this is available.
I can use alphabetical order. Original order would be nice, or maybe somehow I could learn to manipulate my spreadsheets better to match rows. I am not entirely sure what I need even though I do this a lot. I appreciate your interest in this a lot. I definitely would not complain about a software oddity, but am glad that I identified something that might be a problem and the cause of things is identified. Thanks so much. 2016 GA Cup-Finals

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016 GA Cup - Round 3

Hello, GA Cup competitors!

Tuesday saw the end of Round 3. Sainsf, for the third time, won with a sizable 487 points and a shocking 29 articles reviewed. In second, MPJ-DK had 168 points and 7 reviewed articles. In second place, MPJ-DK earned 168 points with just 7 articles, and in third place, Carbrera received 137 points with just 9 articles. Our two wildcard slots went to J Milburn with 122 points and Sturmvogel 66 with 101 points.

In Round 3, 65 reviews were completed! At the beginning of the GA Cup, there were 595 outstanding nominations in the GAN queue; by the end of Round 3, there were 394. Another demonstrable way in which this competition has made a difference is in the length of time articles languish in the queue. At the beginning of the GA Cup, the longest wait was over 9 months [21]; at the end of Round 3, the longest wait had decreased significantly, to a little over 5 months [22]—nothing before 2016. It's clear that we continue to make a difference at GAN and throughout Wikipedia, something we should all be proud of. Thanks to all our competitors for helping to make the GA Cup a continued success, and for your part in helping other editors improve articles. We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in the Finals for the GA Cup so that are successes continue.

To qualify for the Finals, contestants had to earn the highest scores in each of the three pools in Round 3; plus, as well as the top 2 of all remaining users in all of the pools. For the Finals, users were placed in one pool of the remaining five users. To win the GA Cup, you must have the most points. The Finals started on June 1 at 0:00:01 UTC' and end on June 30 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about the Finals and the pools can be found here. A clarification: in order for the points to count, you must mark your reviews as completed; it's not up to the judges to ensure that all reviews are completed by the end of a round.

Hello. I am reviewing the block as 108.162.157.141. The initial block is correct, and I am aware of the previous reviews and the thread at AN. Since then I believe the block has had the intended effect.

Specifically the user has agreed not to edit war. They also now seem to be aware that a disagreement over content(talk page or otherwise) is not consider vandalism and not exempt from 3RR. Their explanation that they "genuinely believed it to be an exception to the 3RR rule" seems plausible for a new user given our rather unique definition of vandalism.

What do you think about me unblocking? I will watch the IPs talk page and make myself available to them in the event they encounter a future dispute. If it turns out I am wrong about this I have no problem with the block being returned later. HighInBC 14:10, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

@Nakon: Confirmed has no user talk template, so the script substituted a blank string. I thought I had that part taken care of, but anyway it's fixed now. I saw what you manually wrote at User_talk:Dominick8, should we turn that into {{Confirmed granted}}?

EFM question

Hi MusikAnimal, a while back I requested the EFM right and you rightly said I should help out and learn a bit more - do you think I am at a point where I could re-apply? I've constructed a couple of regexs for the requested filters, as well as getting my head around the syntax. Hope you're doing well, and thanks -- samtar talk or stalk 11:42, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

@Samtar: It's tough to say. I think you understand regex just fine, but is there a "clear, demonstrated need for the right"? It may seem silly to be so strict about giving the right out to non-admins, but it's just that admins have already gone through rigorous evaluation by the community. If I were you I'd do some more work at WP:EFM, to have more of a track record. When you feel that you're ready, a request for the right can be made a WP:EFN. But honestly, if you're truly fit for a edit filter manager, you're probably fit for an admin! If you want to be one. Give that some thought too :)
Completely unrelated, I understand you're a software developer of sorts. Have you worked on any MediaWiki-related projects? We should chat more on IRC. I'm musikanimal on there, as you might have guessed — MusikAnimal talk 16:42, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

Great! Anytime would be fine. Or, we could wait until the end of the year if you think there might not be enough new stuff to bother with right now. I should mention that, in my opinion, there are a lot of problems with the templates for music that are in use at Commons. Sound recordings fixed before February 15, 1972 are protected solely by state law instead of federal law in the U.S., and in many states the protection is perpetual, so that a recording even as early as 1905 (for example) still has state-law copyright protection in some states. But it's unclear to me which state's law we're supposed to follow. I admit to not having researched it in great detail, but enough to know that the templates we're using are deficient. I'm considering focusing for awhile on uploading music that is clearly 100% public domain, like stuff performed by U.S. military bands, and stuff explicitly donated by copyright holders. Much of the stuff at the Sound/list consists of very old recordings that I'm afraid shouldn't be at Commons in the first place; if someone put stuff at Commons, I'm not sure that I'm doing anything wrong by linking to it, even if it's not supposed to be at Commons. MusikBot error?

I think it was the move(s). Do protections survive single or double page moves? I've seen logs where admins have had to transfer protection after moves. --NeilN talk to me 03:49, 14 June 2016 (UTC)
Protections should be preserved with a move, and after the move both the moved page and the redirect created during the move should have the same protection as each other; but there have been occasional instances over the last few months where a prot was lost during a move. As far as I know, the "transferred protection settings" log messages are automatic transfers, I don't think there's a manual way to do it without manually re-protecting. nyuszika7h (talk) 12:49, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

I don't know if it was ever resolved. Hi MA. back when I was doing these I would use an edit summary noting when a page move had caused a protection to be dropped. Since December I have done over 10000 edits on my new wikignome project so it wouldn't be easy to locate them in my editing history. I can guesstimate that there was at least one page move causing a protection drop roughly every two weeks. Your bot may have encountered these as well but, since it would be using its usual edit summary, you might not be able to discover how often this is occurring. @Crash Underride: Found a whole lot of socks and blocked all of them, along with the sockmaster. I think it's clear at this point they are WP:NOTHERE to work collaboratively, or just simply don't get the point that their edits are disruptive. That account was already there when I did the last round of blocking, but they hadn't made any edits so I was unable to conclude it was MaryKember. I've blocked them and one other sock that I missed. A rangeblock would require checkuser intervention, which I'm not sure is necessary right now — MusikAnimal talk 20:47, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
