Popups in pageview tool

Thanks for the new pageview tool. I found a couple of issues that you might be able to fix. a) The articles are almost impossible to remove on small mobile views (cannot click on the x, would be nice to be able to use backspace/delete). b) the popups seem to be based on a threshold distance (i have not seen the code but guessing based on the appearance of multiple popups when there are a large number of points near the mouse) - it would be better to show a single popup for the point closest to the mouse. - Minor glitches in otherwise excellent work. @Shyamal: Mobile-friendliness is probably something I can improve, but I worry about the popups. I'm using a JavaScript library to create them, and it seems it has it's own set of issues. There are various options I can play around with to see if the popup overlapping can be reduced. I've found you can browse totals by hovering over the dates at the bottom of the chart, it may be easier to do it that way. Also try it on your mobile device by tapping on the dates and moving your finger left/right, that should work quite well. Thanks for https://tools.wmflabs.org/musikanimal/pageviews updates, but redirects.

Hey, one of the serious problems with https://tools.wmflabs.org/musikanimal/pageviews, is that it doesn't allow you to check the page views of redirects in the search. You can force it with a link in the url: https://tools.wmflabs.org/musikanimal/pageviews#start=2016-01-16&end=2016-02-04&lang=en&pages=Wikipedia:Research_help/Med . But the search interface, removes the redirect when doing the search, in favor of the main page, without aggregating those pageviews. Alot of articles are going to be severely underepresenting pageviews because of it. Astinson (WMF) (talk) 18:56, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

I am close to smothering you with love as well (per User:MelanieN), I also owe you a beer. Thank you so much! Now that everything is all fixed like, I think there might be one more small feature to make this tool thoroughly surpass stats.grok.se: a sum of the pageviews represented for each of the search terms. This is fairly easy to do manually, but it would be a really nice to have already calculated in a statement like "Page X, had Y pageviews over Z# days." That should hold through most of the features needs, until the commtech one becomes robust (or you take over the world :P), Astinson (WMF) (talk) 23:01, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

Pageview tool

@Epipelagic: I've just added 5 more chart types. Hit "Change chart type" at the bottom-left and you can select bar chart. The tool will remember your preference. Personally I think the line chart is easier to read, and find it a sensible default. There are some visual kinks to knock out, as you'll notice with a bar chart over a wide date range. Need help from somebody who understands this stuff

Hi, MusikAnimal! Could I pick your brain a little? I need to evaluate an article for resubmission, and it is too technical for me to follow. (I advised the author to make at least the lead intelligible in plain English, and I think they tried, but it's still over my head.) I had deleted the article as a result of this discussion. Among other issues, there were no independent sources. After this request I userfied it, with some advice about sources and such. It is now at User:Mkbergman/UMBEL, and the author wants to know if it is ready to put back into mainspace. The author is a disclosed paid editor (CEO of the developer of this open-source subject.) I do see numerous outside sources in the article now, and they do seem to be actually about the subject. So my inclination is to restore it, and to add a note explaining that it is significantly different from the deleted version and not eligible for G4. But I'd like an opinion from somebody who understands this stuff. I'm not asking you to explain it to me (probably a hopeless case), just to let me know if the article makes sense, and if you think it might be accepted as an article this time around. @MelanieN: Wow. I can see that this is somewhat related to computer science (more so information science), but honestly that's all I know either! I'm tempted to call it a bit too WP:TECHNICAL. The article goes to explain mappings to large databases like Wikipedia, in what I assume is some renders itself a knowledge base of sorts. If in a nutshell this product is a knowledge base, or linked data or what have you, we should say that in the first sentence. I think the lead should more or less be all layman's terms. For instance, what if I knew of a friend who worked for the organization and I wanted to learn more about it – simply on a high level. Unless I'm an information scientist I won't even gather that this is software as opposed to something that's just theoretical. That aside, I think there are sufficient sources, even though almost half of them are primary. Overall I think it's probably suitable for the mainspace, but unfortunately I can't give a firm answer :/ Sorry I couldn't be of more help! — MusikAnimal talk 05:25, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

Pageviews Analysis

@Green Zero: Well, there's a problem. The pageviews API provided by WMF does not distinguish zero pageviews from data that hasn't been loaded in the database yet. See here for more information. GitHub issue at [4]. I think we can treat any NULL values on the most recent day or two days as "data unavailable". Anything before that can safely be assumed as having an actual view count of zero. This should work — MusikAnimal talk 21:48, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

@RickinBaltimore: No, this is a report of defamation which does not constitute a legal threat, as it by default has legal consideration. toollabs: pageviews

Hi,

thank you for making statistics available, also analysis for mobile, bot etc.

However, I would like to ask for an improvement: With every call, at least after cache clearing, users need to contact cloudflare.com and pass details about this user with this IP and this browser profile, and which page he is interested in.

Please find a shield at toollabs:cdnjs which is supposed to cover all your needs, as far as I can see, and access resources within our world only.

My script blocking service directed my attention towards this issue.

@PerfektesChaos: Are you using toollabs:pageviews? There shouldn't be any requests to resources not governed by WMF. The plugins, images, etc, are all served locally. This was not always the case, though, which is why I think you might somehow be using an old version? — MusikAnimal talk 19:49, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
Ah, I see.
Someone passed toollabs:musikanimal/pageviews to me, which is hard to distinguish, but now attempts to redirect (still failing). Perhaps cloudflare.com has been accessed there some days ago.
Now Firefox console tells me: TypeError: sites.includes is not a function, application.js line 1 row 2572. Enjoy.
BTW: Is there something like an official documentation page?
  • I would like to learn which URL parameters will be supported on the long run.
  • Since grok.se is not well now, I would like to link your tool into &action=info page informations.
  • And you deserve a profile page like de:WP:LT/CS.
  • I guess something from #start=2016-01-18&end=2016-02-06&project=de.wikipedia.org&pages=WP:REN
How do you plan to deal with redirect pages? I am very interested in redirects that no one needs and never been touched in www, but others might expect getting redirected from shortcut and the content page being analysed.

@PerfektesChaos: Yes it used to serve cloudflare assets, until phab:T126151 was filed. I can create documentation for the URL, but for most people you could simply enter the info you need within the interface and copy/paste the URL. For action=info you'll just want to remove the datestamps (so it shows the most recent data) and replace pages=Cat with pages={{FULLPAGENAMEE}}. I don't plan to drop support for any URL parameters. If they change the app will normalize them into the new format.
Redirect pages should work, even when searching for them within the interface. For instance, try [6]. I can look into a feature that automatically includes all redirects, if that's what you mean. Very good idea :) I don't know anything about the pages at de:Wikipedia:Technik/Labs/Tools, but feel free to create one for me :) Here on enwiki we have Wikipedia:Web statistics tool, and I think that's it. Here we go: de:WP:LT/pageviews.

  • redirect issues
    • https://analytics.wmflabs.org/demo/pageview-api/ follows all redirects unconditionally.
    • All regular attempts over redirect contribute finally to the target page count.
    • Do-not-redirect is required to decide upon further support of shortcuts, possibly misspelled wording etc.
  • Another issue is adressing by curid (pageid), which is no dramatic change for API access, but permits relocation-save observation of pages in some cases (switching between redirect and content etc.).
  • I assumed that you started some data collection on 2015-10-01, no answers before that day, but being able to answer queries for longer periods. Any idea of future limitations? Six months, one year?

@PerfektesChaos: Thanks for creating that page on dewiki! First off, I'm guessing you didn't mean to link to [7], which is the old demo tool (not mine). I originally had my tool using opensearch, which returned redirects, but then I was convinced that the faster prefixsearch also returned redirects. Well, it does not. So I've changed it back to opensearch, and you should now be able to query for redirects. I'm not sure what you mean about the pageid. Could you explain? Do you want to search by page ID? Finally, the new pageviews API from WMF does not have data prior to October 2015. That is why it won't let you query for earlier than that. Moving forward there will be no restriction on a daterange, so long as it's after October 2015. I guess I need to create an FAQ, as this has been brought up numerous times. — MusikAnimal talk 17:07, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
  • Regarding analytics.wmflabs.org – I just mentioned it since I was bothered that this fellow did not evaluate touching of redirect pages but always forwarded me to the target page and gave me those numbers I was not interested in.
    • Some people may need the usage of probably superfluous redirects, others may expect to get the figures of the target page.
  • pageid means that we use quite often pageids for administrative purposes, since they are not affected by renaming. If we know the pageid of a content page we need not care whether this content has moved some months later, and the old name doesn’t exist any longer or is a redirect now. API accepts both titles and pageids spec.
    • Some query type like &pages=Cat|Dog|#123456 may be used. Since a page name never starts with a # this would obviously point to pageid=123456.
  • Nice to learn that future evaluations might look a year back; grok.se has been limited to 90 days which is sufficient for most practical cases, but sometimes I am a bit curious and got no data.
  • BTW: You have replaced grok.se in our pageinfo tools today.

Thanks for the very valuable feedback! I think I can do most of what you've requested. In particular I really like supporting page IDs. Also you brought up a great point that not everyone will want redirects when using the autocomplete. I'd hate for someone to type out Barak Obama and think the page views are accurate, when really they wanted Barack Obama. I'm thinking I'll have options for "allow redirects", "exclude redirects", and "include all redirects". The first two correlate to when using the autocomplete search. The last one will make the autocomplete exclude redirects, but when you select a page the data shown will include that from all of its redirects. Fun stuff! Pageview Analysis: agent categories "Spider" and "User"

Hey Musiker,
Thank you for the wonderful tool Pageview Analysis! At the German-speaking WP, we've had a similar one implemented to all pages made by -- I suppose -- a private user from Sweden, but it didn't work anymore. Anyway, used to it for a long time, I missed such a thing, and yours now is even better.
My actual request would be as to know the definition of agent categories "Spider" and whether "User" means only registered users or simply every unique visitor (including IPs like myself).

Spiders are search engines like Google. You will see lots of hits from these, which is why we want the ability to exclude them from our results. Pageviews and adblockers

Hey, the new pageview tool looks great and is a pleasure to use. One question, though: Why does it require me to disable my adblocker to work? Hi MusikAnimal. Things are humming along with my Sound/list work (I've recently finished with Puccini and am heading toward Z in the alphabet). I was just wondering if you know why the icons look messed up all of a sudden, on my laptop anyway. Here's an example:

All is well here in Massachusetts, but cold. Brrrr! Hope you are well. On my laptop, when I look at this thing, I see a big black rectangle separating the title from the description. It definiteley appears very different from how it always looked up until last week. Same for all the other "listen" icons. If it looks okay to you, then maybe my computer needs a software update or something. On my iphone, it looks the same as always, though I cannot play ogg's on my iphone. Recent changes

  • You can now edit pages on the mobile site version without JavaScript. [8]
  • You can now use the Math extension to write chemistry formulas. [9]

Problems

  • A few editors might have been logged in as someone else because of a bug. For security reasons everyone was logged out on 9 February. If you have seen this bug, you can report it. [10][11]

Changes this week

  • There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. The plan was to have it leave beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. It will happen on 16 February instead. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [12][13]
  • Cross-wiki notifications will be available as a beta feature on Wikidata, MediaWiki, Commons, and all Hebrew and French wikis on 19 February. [14]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 February. It will be on all wikis from 18 February (calendar).

Meetings

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 16 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • The search function on Wikimedia wikis will get a completion suggester that tries to find the right pages as the user is typing. It will also recognize some typos. This will probably happen in March. It is currently in beta. [15]

Pageviews and Time on Site

I'm glad someone already gave you a barnstar for this. Superb job -especially the comparison of page visits. Is there any technical way that Time On Site could be averaged out and displayed? That'd be some very interesting data to see, but unfortunately is not available to us yet. The API is evolving, and I'm going to keep an eye on it add new features as they get it ironed out. Next up is the top 1000 viewed pages within a given timeframe. The API doesn't really do a good job of giving us this info but I think I know a workaround. Hi Musik, this is probably my fault and not yours but the charts aren't appearing for me. Instead, I see "Chart not appearing? Please ensure you have all ad blockers disabled or have /pageviews/* whitelisted"—but my adblockers have the site whitelisted and are disabled, and I've tried it with four different browsers. Ugh, I quickly tried in Firefox and did see that it didn't load. This probably was my fault. This is why I'm working to add tests, so I have more confidence new builds won't break anything. More on new pageviews interface

stats.grok.se still provides historical data, I think. Not really my problem, I'm using the WMF-provided API, and we get what we get. Just one thing about the date format ... presumably it's US format. Two issues ... first, everyone else uses a different format, typically ddmmyy, not mmddyy; second, using numbers only forces users to wonder which one it is. 05/03/2006 ... March or May? But I'm going on memories from when I could access the interface, a few weeks ago. I might have the format thing wrong.   • Let me suggest that you add this to the interface page:
This interface provides data from October 2015 forward; for earlier data, try the old interface.
The following format is an almost universal lingua franca:
"Date","Page views"

"2015-03-02","143"
...and so on, where the lines are separated by, well, newlines. If you want to be really well-prepared, offer a second format in which the quotes are gone and the commas become tabs. EEng 04:01, 16 February 2016 (UTC)

Sandbox and new article

I just created my first article, Nicolo Schiro, and everything is fine with the article itself. But when I looked at the revision history of the article, I saw that all of the revisions of my sandbox were included in the history of the article. I didn't realize that you had to create a new sandbox before creating a new article (or even know that it could be done.) I first started writing the Schiro article on 05 February 2016 but there are revision from all the way back to August 2015, where I'm learning to use Wikipedia and tests for potential edits to articles or talk pages, like here and here. I made an inquiry at the Teahouse, here, about whether the revision history prior can be deleted and there was no definite answer. There's nothing in those prior sandbox edits that would violate any policy. I checked the page on revision deletion and it was kind of ambiguous about whether my situation applies or not. You are listed as one of the admins who deal with revision deletion, and hopefully can provide guidance on this issue. Libertybison (talk) 21:42, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

@Libertybison: It is possible to do a history merge (or in this case, really a history split). This seems reasonable as those older revisions are unrelated and don't belong to that page.  Done! Moving forward you could create a dedicated page in your userspace for a draft, or if you are the only author of the draft, you can just copy/paste to the new location. If other people helped with the article before it was published their edits will need to be given attribution with a page move. A nifty way to start a userspace draft is to use the form at Help:Userspace draft. You could even add the form to your userpage, as I have done on mine. Finally, you could consider creating your drafts in the Draft namespace, which is a more collaborative area, so others might help you in authoring it. Up to you! Among experienced editors, the visual editor's table editing is one of the most popular features.

If you select the top of a column or the end of a row, you can quickly insert and remove columns and rows.

Now, you can also rearrange columns and rows. Click "Move before" or "Move after" to swap the column or row with its neighbor.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has fixed many bugs. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Indic, and Han scripts, and improving the single edit tab interface.

Recent changes

You can switch from the wikitext editor to the visual editor after you start editing. This function is available to nearly all editors at most wikis except the Wiktionaries and Wikisources.

Many local feedback pages for the visual editor have been redirected to mw:VisualEditor/Feedback.

You can now re-arrange columns and rows in tables, as well as copying a row, column or any other selection of cells and pasting it in a new location.

The formula editor has two options: you can choose "Quick edit" to see and change only the LaTeX code, or "Edit" to use the full tool. The full tool offers immediate preview and an extensive list of symbols.

Future changes

The single edit tab project will combine the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab. This is similar to the system already used on the mobile website. (T102398) Initially, the "Edit" tab will open whichever editing environment you used last time. Your last editing choice will be stored as an account preference for logged-in editors, and as a cookie for logged-out users. Logged-in editors will have these options in the Editing tab of Special:Preferences:

  • Remember my last editor,
  • Always give me the visual editor if possible,
  • Always give me the source editor, and
  • Show me both editor tabs.  (This is the state for people using the visual editor now.)

The visual editor uses the same search engine as Special:Search to find links and files. This search will get better at detecting typos and spelling mistakes soon. These improvements to search will appear in the visual editor as well.

The visual editor will be offered to all editors at most "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next few months. The developers would like to know how well the visual editor works in your language. They particularly want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect the following languages: Japanese, Korean, Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Thai, Aramaic and others.

Time for me to learn something new

Hello M. Today the Cliff Richard article showed up in the Category:Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates. It looks like it has something to do with Rebbing's edit here. I am not sure which - if any - of the templates added are causing the article to show up in the cat. Rebbing please don't think that I am complaining because I am not. I have been working with this cat for almost a year (and M is one of the editors who helps me) and I haven't seen this configuration for these templates before so I am hoping to learn about them. I am also trying to get that article out of the category since it doesn't belong there. Thanks to you both for any info you can provide. MarnetteD|Talk 19:20, 25 February 2016 (UTC)

Hello, Marnette. I believe the problem was that I'd added {{pp}} templates for edit as well as move protection (it has both). I removed the move protection template and it looks like the page is no longer listed as having an incorrect protection template. It's an unusual situation as the page is indefinitely under pending-changes protection but temporarily semi-protected, which effectively supersedes the pending-changes protection since anyone able to edit a semi-protected page will have her changes automatically accepted. Hello! Looks like the article was repeatedly deleted as unambiguous advertising. In this situation I recommend using the article wizard to create a draft article. Random tool question for you since you seem to be quite proficient in those: Is there a tool wherein one can input a regex and search the Username/SUL list for occurrences thereof?   • Thanks to the Graph extension and Pageview API, we now have {{Graph:PageViews}} templates that can show pageviews for any wiki page for any of the wikis. See the examples.
  • The Capiunto extension is installed on test wiki. Capiunto provides flexible infobox functionality for Scribunto and generates HTML for infobox features such as headers and rows. It is designed for clean and modern infoboxes that are driven by data from Wikidata, easily usable across different language versions, and easily extensible.
  • The visual editor now follows the TemplateData format setting announced in November. When you edit or add a use of a template, the wikitext will be laid out in one of the two ways. [22][23]
  • The order of parameters and format defined in a template's TemplateData will be now respected. [24][25]

Changes this week

  • On wikis where the visual editor is available in single edit tab mode, red links may open the visual editor instead of the wikitext editor, depending on user preferences. [26]
  • Anonymous editor warning is now displayed as a warningbox for consistency in both the visual editor and the wikitext editor. [27]

Rollback

I have been fighting some nice amount of vandalism, and I am looking for rollback permission in order to use Huggle. I believe that I am ready for it, and I certainly will never abuse it. I would like to have your opinion on whether I would be granted that permission, since I wasn't able to find clear guidelines. If i put a request for rollback, do i have a good track record?

Hey MusikAnimal, I was wondering if my current contribution track record is good enough to get rollback. Not a formal request but im seeing if my contributions stand up to scrutiny. Winterysteppe (talk) 16:07, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

Doing a very quick spot check, I would be inclined to give you rollback if I were an admin. You should go ahead and request, you are likely going to get it.—cyberpowerChat:Limited Access 16:10, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

Regarding my rollback rights

Hi MusikAnimal. Before I start, I'd just like to thank you for granting me rollback rights in the first place, as well as letting me keep them after my unacceptable edit summary shortly after receiving them. I really do appreciate that. However, I am now starting to take my actions whilst using Huggle into question, and so are many other editors. In this month alone, I have made several accidental reverts, either by misreading a revision, by presuming an edit is vandalism when it is, in fact, not, or by accidentally pressing the "Q" button when I am reading a revision. I am therefore requesting that my rollback be revoked for the time being. I'd rather admit to my unacceptable behaviour and face a milder sanction for it now, than be in denial and risk receiving a block later.

I am unsure whether or not I will be allowed to request these rights again, but that is not a concern of mine. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for my unacceptable behaviour, and I feel as if this revocation will be in the community's best interest.  Done I don't really have time to review your contributions, but I will tell you lots of people make mistakes with Huggle – myself included. The idea I think is to not go too fast. Semi-automated software will work wonders for getting things done very fast, but consequently makes you more prone to error. Just try to be more cautious, is all. The important thing, at least going by what you're telling me, is that you are trying to do good and the fact you upfront about your shortcomings speaks volumes.
