Well done

The Original Barnstar
For Countincr's quality contributions to the image collection and fantastic edits to Fatty liver. Fantastic additions and well referenced! -- Serephine talk - 02:19, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to put an image I got off of the X-Files article, onto his article but it didn't take. Could you help me out? Outside of the image it says the code from the image itself, and also another pixel number that I didn't input (I don't know why). So could you check my second to last revision and tell me or fix what I did wrong. Thanks. Lighthead 22:34, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The image I put originally is fixed

The image I put in there from flickr is fixed. But thanks anyway. Somebody must've fixed it. Thanks. Lighthead þ 04:33 August 7, 2007.

WPMED Stub

Hi Countincr - hope yo don't mind, but I've just moved your new WPMED assessment template to {{WPMED Stub-Class}}. Thjere's a big difference between Stub-Class templates and stub templates, so we try to keep them named so there's no confusion between them. If there's any problems with my move, please contact me, but hopefully you'll have no objection to it. Cheers, Grutness...wha? 00:52, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WP:MED template

Hi Countincr. I noticed that you've been tagging a large number of articles with the WP:MED article template lately. Surely, this is valuable editing, and your work doing so is much appreciated. However, I wonder if you might watch the tagging a little bit closer in certain instances. For example, you have tagged Wikipedia:WikiProject Dentistry/Stub sorting at its talk page three times now. Since this isn't an article (and is, in fact, part of a different Wikiproject), it probably shouldn't have the WP:MED article tag. In any event, I encourage you to continue tagging other relevant articles. Thanks. · jersyko talk 19:43, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing it out. Ideally this page should have a "<noinclude></noinclude>" tag to avoid bot associated mistakes. Note that because of this the page is included in at least 10 medicine related categories.--Countincr ( t@lk ) 21:20, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you failed this article back on October 21, but didn't add the {{GA}} or {{ArticleHistory}} template to it's talk page indicating its status, nor did you remove it from the WP:GAN listing page. I went ahead and did this for you, but I just wanted to remind you so that you don't forget in the future. Cheers! Dr. Cash 19:36, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Baldness

Hi Countincr, I'm curious about your decision to tag Baldness as having top-level medical importance. Do you think it's equivalent to, say, Myocardial infarction and Antibiotic? Is it more important than Influenza and Fever?

Since I'm assessing a bunch of articles myself, I'm very curious what critieria other editors apply in these cases. Baldness is a particularly interesting case study, because it is very interesting (to men, at least) but pretty unimportant to overall health -- unless the balding person hurts themselves in an attempt to "fix" the perceived problem. I guess my fundamental question is how much weight to give the likely popularity of the topic. (I'll watch this page if you'd like to reply here.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 23:08, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

as mentioned in the project assessment page( under importance scale) importance is gauged against the need for an average wikipedia user to look up in an encyclopaedia which may or may not be of interest to an expert or student of the subject. Thanks--Countincr ( t@lk ) 00:15, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but do you think that the average reader is looking up baldness as a medical issue, or for some other reason (fashion, for example)? WhatamIdoing (talk) 00:32, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
40% of men at 40's or 80% at their 80's are said to be bald. So I thought they or their partners may want to look it up either as a health issue or from fashion perspective. Why someone needs to search is less of an issue, whether they expect it in an encyclopedia is the question--Countincr ( t@lk ) 00:41, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I can agree to that. If importance simply reflects overall popularity, then we could trivially assign importance with a bot, based entirely on the number of hits a page gets. Furthermore, all projects would find each page to have identical importance. For example, WP:WikiProject Iowa and WP:WikiProject Cities would both need to give Des Moines, Iowa exactly the same rating.
I'm thinking that the Iowa state capitol could be very important in terms of Iowa, even if it's not really important at all compared to all the other cities in the world -- and, similarly, that perhaps baldness could be a very popular page without being "extremely important, even crucial," (to quote the assessment guidelines) to medicine. WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:36, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My understanding was: importance should be judged for the encyclopedia as a whole (presumably for global audience) not just for one project and as such should be uniform across projects. Having said that, I went through version 1.0 page and am not so confident any more, you might be right. Once consensus obtained on merging issue, we can put the question to project members.--Countincr ( t@lk ) 21:33, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright violation in Image:Livertransplant.jpg

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Livertransplant.jpg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Livertransplant.jpg is unquestionably copyright infringement, and no assertion of permission has been made.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:Livertransplant.jpg, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Hi! I really liked your user page, but that's not the reason I'm writing to you. I really liked the liver and biliary tree image that you'd uploaded and have used it in the article ascending cholangitis, which is the Medical Collaboration of the Week.

Thanks for the image, and of course, you're invited to contribute to the article.

Survey Request

Hi,
I need your help. I am working on a research project at Boston College, studying creation of medical information on Wikipedia. You are being contacted, because you have been identified as an important contributor to one or more articles.

Would you will be willing to answer a few questions about your experience? We've done considerable background research, but we would also like to gather the insight of the actual editors. Details about the project can be found at the user page of the project leader, geraldckane. Survey questions can be found at geraldckane/medsurvey. Your privacy and confidentiality will be strictly protected!

The questions should only take a few minutes. I hope you will be willing to complete the survey, as we do value your insight. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Professor Kane if you have any questions.

question

Hi,

Would you be interested in volunteering some time and expertise to help the Wikimedia Foundation in a collaboration with the National Institutes of Health? I unfortunately do not have a lot of details to give at this time, but in short, I'm looking for a group of Wikimedians (primarily US or UK based, but that's not a requirement) that have interest or expertise in various medical fields, to help participate in a Wikimedia Academy event with the NIH. Even if you don't think you'd be able to attend the event, but would be interested in helping out online in any capacity, I'd love to hear back from you. Please leave a message on my talk page at User talk:Swatjester if you are interested. Thank you. SWATJester Son of the Defender 14:57, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Horse chestnut leaf.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Horse chestnut leaf.jpg, which you've sourced to http://www.flickr.com/photos/jezzebelle/462014273/. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Logan Talk Contributions 21:58, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

spelling mistake

Hello, thank you for the hepatic steatosis diagram. I wanted to point out a spelling mistake for the word 'clearance'.

The Wikipedia Library now offering accounts from Cochrane Collaboration (sign up!)

The Wikipedia Library gets Wikipedia editors free access to reliable sources that are behind paywalls. Because you are signed on as a medical editor, I thought you'd want to know about our most recent donation from Cochrane Collaboration.

  • Cochrane Collaboration is an independent medical nonprofit organization that conducts systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of health-care interventions, which it then publishes in the Cochrane Library.
  • Cochrane has generously agreed to give free, full-access accounts to 100 medical editors. Individual access would otherwise cost between $300 and $800 per account.
  • If you are still active as a medical editor, come and sign up :)

Spotlight - Simplified article translation

Wikiproject Medicine started translating simplified articles in February 2014. We now have 45 simplified articles ready for translation, of which the first on African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness has been translated into 46 out of ~100 languages. This list does not include the 33 additional articles that are available in both full and simple versions.

Our goal is to eventually translate 1,000 simplified articles. This includes:

We are looking for subject area leads to both create articles and recruit further editors. We need people with basic medical knowledge who are willing to help out. This includes to write, translate and especially integrate medical articles.

What's happening?

IEG grant
CFCF - "IEG beneficiary" and editor of this newsletter.

I've (CFCF) taken on the role of community organizer for this project, and will be working with this until December. The goals and timeline can be found here, and are focused on getting the project on a firm footing and to enable me to work near full-time over the summer, and part-time during the rest of the year. This means I will be available for questions and ideas, and you can best reach me by mail or on my talk page.

Wikimania 2014

For those going to London in a month's time (or those already nearby) there will be at least one event for all medical editors, on Thursday August 7th. See the event page, which also summarizes medicine-related presentations in the main conference. Please pass the word on to your local medical editors.

Integration progress

There has previously been some resistance against translation into certain languages with strong Wikipedia presence, such as Dutch, Polish, and Swedish.
What was found is that thre is hardly any negative opinion about the the project itself; and any such critique has focused on the ways that articles have being integrated. For an article to be usefully translated into a target-Wiki it needs to be properly Wiki-linked, carry proper citations and use the formatting of the chosen target language as well as being properly proof-read. Certain large Wikis such as the Polish and Dutch Wikis have strong traditions of medical content, with their own editorial system, own templates and different ideas about what constitutes a good medical article. For example, there are not MEDRS (Polish,German,Romanian,Persian) guidelines present on other Wikis, and some Wikis have a stronger background of country-specific content.

  • Swedish
Translation into Swedish has been difficult in part because of the amount of free, high quality sources out there already: patient info, for professionals. The same can be said for English, but has really given us all the more reason to try and create an unbiased and free encyclopedia of medical content. We want Wikipedia to act as an alternative to commercial sources, and preferably a really good one at that.
Through extensive collaborative work and by respecting links and Sweden specific content the last unintegrated Swedish translation went live in May.
  • Dutch
Dutch translation carries with it special difficulties, in part due to the premises in which the Dutch Wikipedia is built upon. There is great respect for what previous editors have created, and deleting or replacing old content can be frowned upon. In spite of this there are success stories: Anafylaxie.
  • Polish
Translation and integration into Polish also comes with its own unique set of challenges. The Polish Wikipedia has long been independent and works very hard to create high quality contentfor Polish audience. Previous translation trouble has lead to use of unique templates with unique formatting, not least among citations. Add to this that the Polish Wikipedia does not allow template redirects and a large body of work is required for each article.
(This is somewhat alleviated by a commissioned Template bot - to be released). - List of articles for integration
  • Arabic
The Arabic Wikipedia community has been informed of the efforts to integrate content through both the general talk-page as well as through one of the major Arabic Wikipedia facebook-groups: مجتمع ويكيبيديا العربي, something that has been heralded with great enthusiasm.
Integration guides

Integration is the next step after any translation. Despite this it is by no means trivial, and it comes with its own hardships and challenges. Previously each new integrator has needed to dive into the fray with little help from previous integrations. Therefore we are creating guides for specific Wikis that make integration simple and straightforward, with guides for specific languages, and for integrating on small Wikis.

Instructions on how to integrate an article may be found here [3]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
