July 14, 7pm: Virtual Coney Island Meetup + NYC monthly collaboration
Welcome to Wikimedia New York City!

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly online gathering (7-8pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop. To join the meeting from your computer or smartphone, just visit this link. More information about how to connect is available on the meetup page.

Instead of our usual "WikiWednesday" Salon, we'll focus on the WikiProject NYC monthly collaboration and this month's subject of Coney Island.

And rather than Zoom, we'll meet on a proximity chat virtual Coney Island beach and share over topical articles and collaborations.

We look forward to seeing local Wikimedians, but would also like to invite folks from the greater New York metropolitan area (and beyond!) who might not typically be able to join us in person!

7:00pm - 8:00 pm online via WikiConey on Gather

Notice

The article South African AIDS Vaccine Initiative has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Minimally sourced article. Little news coverage, no indications of notability; according to linked official website, inactive since 2012 with no chance of resuming

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Re: Miss you, new tech

Hi, I saw your message on Anna's talk page. I have about dozen bios that need images. Can I use this tool now to create images and upload them to commons? Viriditas (talk) 21:08, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

@Viriditas: It is experimental technology but yes you could. I started a discussion at a project page that Anna established. If you want to talk more then reply and ping me there. If you generate an artwork then let me know and I will start a discussion requesting other people to come comment on it. By the way, I have nothing to do with this tool, and even the tool's page does not clearly identify who develops it. I know little about it.

Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia

Dear fellow editor,

I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. I hope that the lessons I can learn from you that I will present to the academic audience will benefit both the WikiProject Medicine (improving your understanding of yourself and helping to promote it and attract new volunteers) and the wider world of medical volunteering and academia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.

All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.

Please note that by filling out this questionnaire, you consent to participate in this research. The survey is anonymous and all personal details relevant to your experience will be kept private and will not be transferred to any third party.

I appreciate your support of this research and thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and share your experiences! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at my Wikipedia user page or through my email listed on the survey page (or by Wikipedia email this user function).

The survey is accessible through the LINK HERE.

Research: 'Sticky' rubber...

Hi,

this may seem like an unusual request, but do you still have any contacts with the Consumer Reports people?

I am asking because in trying to find out how to cure a problem with 'sticky' rubber surfaces in a mid 1990's construction toy set, I had in a cupboard, I'm finding some anecdotal accounts of other products with rubberised components becoming 'sticky' or degrading.

I was therefore interested in determining if this is indeed a widespread but known issue, and given you previous connections with CR I felt I should ask if you knew where might hold relevant articles.

ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:28, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

@ShakespeareFan00: I have not worked with Consumer Reports since 2018 but I may be able to ask questions or identify relevant articles.
Are you trying to fix a sticky mess, repair failing glue, or respond to degrading solid rubber?
Consumer Reports typically focuses on conventional use of consumer products. 90s toys are probably out of scope, but tell me more and let me see if I can find publications.
Also, this is kind of a mess, but I think Internet Archive now has scans of almost every Consumer Reports publication. See their gallery. Navigating Internet Archive is still difficult, but as a long term solution, the Internet Archive could be the channel by means of which we eventually surface CR content and all other magazines. They are doing this independently of Consumer Reports partnership. Bluerasberry (talk) 15:38, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
Ideally clean up some old model tyres which were sticky to the touch, but not actually deformed yet (so most likely the third of the options you give_. I was wanting to determine if this was a widespread issue with certain types of plastic/rubber. It wasn't unexpected, as I've had other things degrade over time, like scroll wheels on mice, and a rubber pad on an old laptop ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:51, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Inactive WikiProject Open/Open access task force

Hello, and thank you for your thanks! As I was looking at neighboring WikiProjects to WP:FOSS I found quite a lot related projects abandoned. I hope I haven't assumed wrongly the activity of the Open access task force. It seems you have been active there in the past - can you tell me some about how it declined there? And where most of the communication happened on the task force? Was it on it's talk page? GavriilaDmitriev (talk • they/them) 17:00, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

@GavriilaDmitriev: Most people who are interested in openness want to put their interest into practice, not discuss the philosophy of it. WikiProject Open and the related WikiProject Open Access are about the philosophy.
Wikidata's most popular project in count of contributors and depth of engagement is meta:WikiCite and d:Wikidata:WikiProject Source Metadata. In both of those projects, cataloging open access research is a priority, and doing data modeling for related research tools is very popular also. There are hundreds of people engaged in this through multiple unrelated projects. A large project with several hundred contributors is d:Wikidata:WikiProject PCC Wikidata Pilot/Participants.
You marked the English Wikipedia WikiProject Open Access as inactive. It is correct that there is no active community there, but if there were a way to mark that the activity has moved to Wikidata, then that would be more accurate. I do not know how to communicate that. There is activity on Wikipedia but it takes forms which are hard to see. Bluerasberry (talk) 17:35, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Notice

The article Ryan Morrison has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:BLP1E, all sources are about the same moment in his life

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I responded by adding more citations and removing the prod. Bluerasberry (talk) 14:25, 19 April 2022 (UTC)

Note re item

hi. just a quick reminder, I hope to join the zoom call below, today. thanks! --Sm8900 (talk) 14:20, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

hi. also, I have made a small partial outline of some of the topics and ideas which I have been thinking about. you can take a look at it, at Wikipedia talk:Meetup/NYC/June 2022. if you have a chance, coulkd you please take a quick look at those? please feel free to express any comments ideas, feedback, etc, at all. thanks! Sm8900 (talk) 14:27, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

note re some ideas

hi there good to see you just now, on Discord. as discussed, I am posting some of my ideas here as well. I would like to ask if you could please tell me about at least one wikiproject, or other group, or any group effort, project, or activity where you are currently active?

my reason for this is fairly simple. I am hoping to create some renewed processes for wikiprojects to interact, communicate and work together.I am willing to present my ideas from step one to any wikiproject. I am not asding you to simply endorse my ideas without any dissent or discussion. i would simply like to have the chance to present my ideas to some project, or group effort, where you are already a member. that way, if you disagree with me, then that is totally and absolutely fine; however, that way, i could benefit from at least getting your open and direct feedback of what you think of my ideas, and how I presented them. I would greatly appreciate your help, and input on this. please feel free to let me know. thanks! --Sm8900 (talk) 17:14, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

@Sm8900: We can talk by voice or video chat soon.
My best idea for community development is encouraging more applications from individuals or organizations for funding from the Wikimedia Foundation at meta:grants:start. I feel that there are a lot of barriers in community development which would evaporate if we moved some tasks from the volunteer bottleneck into paid administrative support. There is a lot of money available - like millions of US$ - and many budgets go unused for lack of applicants. Money is not the solution to everything but it solves some things, especially in the amounts that it is available in the wiki movement. And of course the money gets spent regardless; it is a question of whether the wiki community volunteers direct it versus non-community outside contractors.
I know you do the history project and now is LGBT pride month, so look at WP:WikiProject LGBT Studies as an example where I participate. Every capitol city in the world has a history of LGBT culture, and many are documented, and most lack Wikipedia articles. A list like that could get some contributors. If you have an idea let's talk about it and if I can support you in talking with others at that project then I would. Thanks. Bluerasberry (talk) 14:53, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
glad we had a chance to discuss these ideas. thanks for all your ideas! Sm8900 (talk) 14:28, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
