Idea for new community workspace

Hi. I would like to create some kind of collaborative workspace where coordinators or members of various WikiProjects would gather and provide updates and information on what is going on at each wikiproject, i.e. regarding their latest efforts, projects, and where interested editors can get involved.

You have been very helpful, so I wanted to get your brief input on whether you'd be interested in helping me to make this happen. I see a few possible options for making this happen, so I would like to get your input and feedback on this. which of the options below would you prefer? also, please reply to the brief questions below.

Please feel free to let me know what you think of this idea, and please let me know your preference, regarding the options above. if you do not see any need for this idea, that is totally fine. However, I think that the majority of editors lack awareness of where the truly active editing is taking place and at which WikiProjects, and I would like to do whatever I can to help make people more aware of where the activity is, what they can do to help, and also which areas of Wikipedia offer ideas and efforts that might help them in their own editing activities. Please feel free to let me know. --Sm8900 (talk) 05:14, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

hi. this idea is now receiving a full and active discussion! you can participate at: Wikipedia: Village_pump_(proposals)#Idea_for_new_community_workspace. thanks!!! --Sm8900 (talk) 16:15, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Happy holidays!

Hi Lane! All the warmest wishes for this seasonal occasion, whichever you celebrate - or don't, while I swelter at 27℃ (80.6℉), and peace and prosperity for 2020. Thank you so much for all you do to help make Wikipedia a better place, and seriously hoping that you'll join me for a cool beer in Bangkok in August when it will be even hotter!

A thank you

Just wanted to go ahead and thank you for working so congenially and helpfully with my students, both at the Health information on the Internet page and the Basic life support page. This encouragement and affirmation goes a long way. It's one thing for me to tell them to be bold, and another for a seasoned wikipedian to do so. I see that you are deeply involved in Wikiproject medicine-- can I perhaps reach out to you in the future if I have students who run into more complicated issues related to the difficulties of writing about medical topics? Since my assignment is primarily about learning the editorial environment, getting to know seasoned editors has been very useful in figuring out the best ways to quickly get my students acquainted with these complex conventions (if you're curious about the assignment, it was recently featured on the wikiedu blog here). Thanks again! Etherfire (talk) 04:01, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Please put it aside

Please put aside any behavioral concerns. Thank you. --Hipal/Ronz (talk) 00:56, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

I love it! Keep the faith yo!, I appreciate the support. Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:57, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Arbitration case opened

In 2018, you offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has now accepted that request for arbitration, and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Jytdog. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Jytdog/Evidence. Please add your evidence by March 23, 2020, which is when the evidence phase closes. You can also contribute to the case workshop subpage, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Jytdog/Workshop. For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration.

All content, links, and diffs from the original ARC and the latest ARC are being read into the evidence for this case.

The secondary mailing list is in use for this case: arbcom-en-b@wikimedia.org

Wikimedia Café

Hi Bluerasberry, I've been trying to get in contact with you regarding the Wikimedia Cafe on Meta and through email. There is some time sensitivity regarding the Café because people need to have enough notice regarding the schedule and agenda. Would you please see the most recent email that I sent to you and reply to me through email or on Meta? I realize that you may be busy, but I prefer for us to set up the Café together so that I'm not doing so much by myself. I can't do everything that should be done. Thanks, ↠Pine () 21:36, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

@Pine: Acknowledged, I wish to sort asap. That is as much as I can say. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:48, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll have more availability on the weekend, and if you can't get the email notification sent by Saturday then I'll try to send it, but I think that it would be preferable for you to to do that. I'm stretched among multiple projects and I can't do everything that should be done. ↠Pine () 02:01, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
@Pine: I set up the next event page and also sent out an email invitation. Thanks for the reminder. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:09, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi @Bluerasberry: did you send an email to Wikimedia-l? It's great if you sent an email invitation elsewhere also. I haven't seen an email come through Wikimedia-l regarding this. ↠Pine () 20:06, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
@Pine: Thanks, I did attempt to send an email through there, and I did make an error in that attempt. I just resent. Yes, it was my intent to do that. Blue Rasberry (talk) 22:43, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Two COVID-19 articles

Re "two articles", are you thinking of breaking it up into two Signpost columns? ☆ Bri (talk) 18:51, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

@Bri: I think so let me see how much content we have. I will draft today. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:01, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

Special Report

Hello, Bluerasberry,

I just looked over your Special report and think it is well-done. I just wanted to add one perspective on Wikipedia & COVID-19. I initially got involved in editing the articles & WikiProject COVID-19 because I anticipated lots of vandalism due to the wildfire nature of the pandemic. But except for a few notable, flaky edits, there has just not been the vandalism I expected. And we are seeing not only a lot of new editors but new, but experienced, editors that I am guessing are returning editors from the old days who are coming back to edit with new accounts. Initially (meaning 3 weeks ago), I was trying to check every edit I saw come across my Watchlist but it quickly proved to be unnecessary. And even when I have come across big content deletions or additions, they are usually warranted or can be justified. I can't say that there has been zero vandalism but the high level of responsible editing has really been a pleasant surprise.

Discussions on talk pages, especially last week, could get very heated. But it has all been in good faith due to the importance of this issue which helps reinforce my faith in this usefulness of this project. Thanks for your coverage of a variety of sides to COVID-19 & Wikipedia. Liz Read! Talk! 01:22, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

April 2020 Wikimedia Café

Hi Bluerasberry, I sent you an email about the announcement for the April 2020 Wikimedia Café. I think that sending announcements at least 2 weeks in advance of meeting dates is preferable, and we're already near the end of the second week in April. ↠Pine () 06:21, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

  • Hi Bluerasberry, I don't think that I can move forward with the Wikimedia Café without your support or at least hearing how you want to proceed. One practical reason is that the current Zoom link is under your control. Although I could create a new Zoom link, I think that having two people involved with coordinating the Café is much better than one person doing this alone. Please let me know how you want to proceed. ↠Pine () 19:29, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
@Pine: I am loopy with other obligations. Let me try to get this posted today. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:32, 15 April 2020 (UTC)
@Pine: I still have not sent it out but I think it is ready to go out. I made lots of changes. Can you give a quick look before I email? Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:47, 16 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi Bluerasberry, unfortunately I have been busy today and probably will be for the next few days. I have a suggestion. Zoom is being criticized for privacy problems, so I think that we should consider changing the software for the meeting, probably to Jitsi if we can get it to work on our computers and if we think that its privacy protections are better than Zoom's. Also, I see that you did some design changes to the Café page but I'm too busy to look through that at the moment. The date is already late in the month, so how about skipping the Café for this month while we deal with our mutual off-wiki obligations, and take some time to consider the redesign of the page and possibly moving to Jitsi? I can send out a brief announcement about this if you agree to it. ↠Pine () 06:39, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
@Pine: At meta:WikiProject remote event participation‎ Jitsi has gained no particular favor. I have used it lots of times and found it to to crash sometimes and be more difficult to use than Zoom. I am open to change but I also feel comfortable affiliating with that WikiProject to justify our use of Zoom.
Ɱ is ready to present on maps this next Saturday so with him as scheduled speaker I would like to go ahead. 8 days notice for a regular event is within the norms of wiki community announcements. For May I will get the announcement out early.
If you can join this next one then great, otherwise I think I can manage this event with Ɱ. Blue Rasberry (talk) 12:34, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi @Bluerasberry: OK, please go ahead with . There is a good chance that I can attend. My main concerns are the short notice and the use of Zoom. I like Zoom but the recent privacy problems are why I bring up the question of what platform should be used for conferencing. At some point I'll want to read through the redesign of the Café page and I may talk with you about that. When you make the announcements for this month, please send emails to both Wikimedia-l and Wikitech-l, and please set up an announcement on the Meta main page as I have done in previous months. Thanks! ↠Pine () 19:45, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

On the Wikidata infobox discussion @ simple

Hi Bluerasberry. Just wanted to check in and ask what your plan is with regards to the Wikidata infobox integration at Simple moving forward. I'll note the discussion was auto-archived but I think there was enough broad consensus to move forward with the pilot so I'd be interested what the next steps would be. Hiàn (talk) 17:55, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

@Hiàn: Thanks for your interest. I want a pilot but I hesitated a bit when I saw all the moving pieces. Could you assist a bit? I have some text drafted at simple:User:Bluerasberry/Wikidata box and I think that I am over-documenting. Something that I do want to do is (1) list previous discussions on Simple English Wikipedia for easy access and without commentary (2) make a clear proposal with goals, timelines, and limitations at Simple English Wikipedia. What I do not want to do is (1) try to comprehensively explain this, because it is too much (2) encourage too much discussion before a limited experiment / pilot, because I think it is not possible to understand this without seeing it.
Do you have an idea for what you think would work? I want an experiment, but I do not feel strongly how the experiment should go. I feel like any small experiment now would be useful. Thanks for any suggestions. Blue Rasberry (talk) 23:44, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
Hi Bluerasberry. If you'd be okay with it, I'd be happy to make some adjustments to the draft page and begin moves towards beginning the pilot. I think the terms of your initial proposal were fairly reasonable so I think the best thing would be to work within those guidelines. Details should probably first be finalized at ST (i.e. what sort of infobox should be first included in a pilot like this) - that strikes me as the best way forward and hopefully it'll let the community work out some of the kinks before proceeding.
I think that about sums it up. If you ever need help with anything on the administrative side, I can probably help out, and I think I'll be able to call on some users with reasonable technical abilities if it's necessary. Hiàn (talk) 00:17, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you for your message. I have used (read and/or fixed minor typoes without an account/etc) Wikipedia for over a decade for lots of reasons so I am well aware that while many people say it's "bad" or "unreliable" that there are policies/procedures in place to make things work well. This is just the first time I've dove in and tried - it's much different from my past experiences at Bulbapedia and some Wikia (or whatever they're called now) sites. bɜ:ʳkənhɪmez (User/say hi!) 01:22, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

An arbitration case Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Medicine has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

  • Standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all discussions about pharmaceutical drug prices and pricing and for edits adding, changing, or removing pharmaceutical drug prices or pricing from articles. Any uninvolved administrator may apply sanctions as an arbitration enforcement action to users editing in this topic area, after an initial warning.
  • CFCF is reminded to avoid casting aspersions and similar conduct in the future.
  • Doc James is prohibited from making any edits relating to pharmaceutical drug prices or pricing in the article namespace.
  • QuackGuru is indefinitely topic-banned from articles relating to medicine, broadly construed.

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in discussions about pharmaceutical drug prices and pricing and for edits adding, changing, or removing pharmaceutical drug prices or pricing from articles. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

I am formally notifying anyone who was originally named as a party in the case. Barkeep49 (talk) 02:55, 4 June 2020 (UTC)

Concerning the domestication of Syrian Hamsters

Hello! You thanked me for adding the picture of my hamster cage on wiki commons, I've been doing some editing the pages about hamster care.

I was researching the domestication of syrian hamsters and saw that you were writing on the talk page and you said you made the page for James Henry Skene, so I was wondering if you had any leads on something.

the book Hamster : a practical guide to caring for your hamster (2002) by David Alderton also claims James Skene brought a group of hamsters back to great britain in 1880 and bread them for over 30 years, but James Skene died in 1886.. Is there anything confirming that the hamsters were still being bread for that long and who took over after he passed away? The book also states that his hamsters attracted little interest as potential pets, this implies he was attempting to market them as such. It seems like there should be some record of 30 years of breeding these hamsters. - book here

It seems true that this colony has died out.

"Studies based on their mitochondrial DNA (which is only inherited maternally) suggest that all domestic hamsters are descended from a single female and for that we have to thank a single man: Israel Aharoni." - UCL Culture Blog

But were any sold as pets at all but then the lines died out?

I recently started editing wikipedia and would be happy to talk about it since as you say on your talk page "The best way to learn about editing Wikipedia is to talk with other people about it."!

A tag has been placed on Category:People by university or college in Uttar Pradesh requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. BabiBoi moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, BabiBoi, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. KylieTastic (talk) 11:57, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @KylieTastic: I'm guessing you forgot to check the page history before doing this? The article was created by Bluerasberry and was well sourced when he moved it to mainspace [3]. Later some newer editors added a lot of unreferenced content and removed the existing references [4]. I've moved it back to mainspace and reverted the addition of unsourced material. – Joe (talk) 12:50, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
Ahhh! @Joe Roe: your right, stupid error, thanks for the catch, and also apologies to Bluerasberry for missing it. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 13:00, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
@KylieTastic: Thanks for your review. Please keep doing these, no one should mind errors. It is an article at the edge of notability anyway.
@Joe Roe: Thanks for watching and reverting. The article has sources. It is modest and I do not mind anyone's scrutiny of its notability. thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:12, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

Sun Aug 16: Great American Wiknic NYC & Beyond

August 16, 3pm: Great American Wiknic

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our annual summer Great American Wiknic, this year being held virtually.

We look forward to seeing local Wikimedians, but would also like to invite folks from the greater New York metropolitan area (and beyond!) who might not typically be able to join us in person!

Featuring artist-Wikimedian Sara Clugage's "Picnics: An Outside History" for a cultural exploration of picnicking, knowledge and society during the national panel in the first part. We encourage you to call in for the second part from a local park or natural site and share it on the video stream, as well as sharing your favorite picnic grub or other special foods with us.

Is there a project you'd like to share? A question you'd like answered? A Wiki* skill you'd like to learn? Let us know by adding it to the agenda. The Wiknic is taking the place of "WikiWednesday" this month, so we will also include salon and knowledge-sharing workshop aspects.

3:00 pm - 4:00 pm online via YouTube (watch our national panel's livestream, and participate by text chat)
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm online via Zoom (participate by videoconference with NYC community)

We especially encourage folks to share your parks and foods on screen, and add your 3-minute lightning talks to our roster for the Zoom portion, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues!

(You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future notifications for NYC-area events by adding or removing your name from this list.)

Wiknic

As both an editor who attended the Youtube live session and a resident of the NYC metro area, I believe it is important to go to wiknic. I do have it set on the calendar. However I am unsure if I should drive down or not. Will there be any use of using the train? Personisgaming (talk) 00:53, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

Would you be willing to review our page submission for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Expertscape? Potential Sanctions

While Attempting to edit a page a thing popped saying "You are subject to potential sanctions." What edits occured? Personisgaming (talk) 20:55, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

@Personisgaming: I am lost here. What did you see and where? Are you asking me just in general, or do you expect that I know about this? Based on what you said I do not know what this is about. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:06, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
@Bluerasberry: The following below was said;

"The following discretionary sanctions apply to all people who edit this article: You must not make more than one revert per 24 hours to this article. If an edit you make is reverted you must discuss on the talk page and wait 24 hours before reinstating your edit. An administrator has applied the restriction above to this page. This is due to an arbitration decision which authorised discretionary sanctions for edits and pages relating to post-1932 politics of the United States and closely related people. If you breach the restriction on this page, you may be blocked or otherwise sanctioned. Please edit carefully.

Discretionary sanctions have been used by an administrator to place restrictions on all edits to this page. Discretionary sanctions can also be used against individual editors who repeatedly or seriously fail to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behaviour, or any Wikipedia policy and editorial norm." Personisgaming (talk) 21:10, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

@Personisgaming: Perhaps you are seeing the template {{American politics AE}} which links to the arbitration case Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/American politics 2. I am still unclear about what you are asking, but everyone who edits pages with routine conflict may get reminders like this to maintain civility. What more should I say? Blue Rasberry (talk) 11:41, 13 October 2020 (UTC)
@Bluerasberry: I encountered a sign with the same words but with extra terms and words. Personisgaming (talk) 03:15, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
