re: this edit to DHP

Hello!

I see in the above edit you removed my disambig link to Dual heuristic programming, amongst others. Although there is no article on it yet, it's a valid disambig and a I would consider it a notable subject. I'm never sure when to remove something from a disambig, so if you could point me in the direction of a policy or explain your reasoning it would be greatly appreciated.

While I'm sure it is a valid disambig, like you said, we don't have an article for it. I tend to avoid allowing red links to exist on disambiguation pages, since they are of little practical use. Scope of the "List of private spaceflight companies" article

Hi Anxietycello. I think you have kicked on a very interesting, and much needed, discussion at Talk:List_of_private_spaceflight_companies#Clarification_of_the_list_title. I very much agree with the need to clean it up, and even to narrow the scope. Please see my comments there. I'm not sure the scope should be narrowed quite as much as you have suggested, for reasons I outline on the Talk page. However, I would be generally supportive of a new Wikipedia list article that would have the narrow scope you have suggested, say, List of companies offering human spaceflight, while narrowing the scope of the existing article to just NewSpace-developed vehicles, i.e., those developed by private companies with substantially private funds. Anxietycello--the work you've done on the List of private spaceflight companies article is very good, and has advanced the quality and completeness of the article significantly. I would recommend you NOT stop your efforts at making a list of companies doing or planning on doing human spaceflight. If you create a new list article with that reduced scope, I think it will be fairly straightforward for you to list only those companies that are verifiably included in that narrower definition, or if some are of uncertain provenance, we'll clean it up with you as it evolves. Also, while we are, all of us, waiting for the List of private spaceflight companies article to, as you say, "evolve naturally," I recommend you change the lead scope of that back to what it was for a long time before your recent narrowing of it to human spaceflight -- but I don't think you should take out, right now at least, ANY of your other changes to that article. "Space Tourism" terminology? An idea to consider

Regarding your interest in having an article titled List of space tourism companies, I offer the following comment and suggestion. Firstly, let me say that I am supportive of your overall idea to have such a list article on Wikipedia, one covering companies who are taking or plan to take, humans into space. I have articulated this strong support in comments on other discussion pages over the past week.

However, I no longer believe that including "space tourism" in the name is a good idea. A space tourist has a fairly narrow definition and, relative to all folks who might go to space in the next two decades, a rather narrow, and perhaps overly restrictive, point-of-view. There are many words to describe a human who goes to space. Early persons who did this, all funded by national governments, were called astronauts or cosmonauts. Recently, space tourist is a term that has gathered some currency to describe the very small number of persons (less than ten, to date) who have gone to space on Soyuz spacecraft as part of the Russian space agency. Having said this, several of those who have gone under self-funded programs dispute the "tourist" label since they hardly simply paid a fee, dropped off their suitcase, and hopped aboard the rocket for their space trip. They have typically undergone extensive training programs of six months or more. This is illustrative of the problem of labeling an article, especially one you might hope to have a life of a decade or more, List of space tourism companies. Another term that has been used recently is spaceflight participant, by Virgin Galactic and some of the journalists covering NewSpace.

Let me suggest a continuum that might illustrate just a few of the various roles that future spacegoers or spacefarers might fill, and/or options that might be available given potential advances in space technology.

• Space tourist -- someone who with minimal training and advanced preparation gets on a space vehicle to transport them to low-earth orbit, or to lunar or martian or other destinations. There is very low risk to this sort of human space access as all systems have been thoroughly checked out over repeated (and frequent?) flights so that risk probabilities can be reasonably well-known. This easy-to-use and low-risk end of the spectrum may be a few years, or more, off into the future.
• Spaceflight participant -- someone who must prepare more extensively, say a centrifuge g-force test, medical and stress tests, zero-g flights, and some sort of formal advanced training -- before being allowed to participate in a spaceflight. Risk is medium; for example, one of the programs that would appear to be farther along than many others right now is Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo--they plan to have hundreds of flights to characterize their flight systems before taking paying "spaceflight participants" (which is the actual term VG is using) up to sub-orbital flights begining circa 2011.
• Space adventurer -- someone who must prepare intimately and for an extended time to take a, perhaps never-been-done-before, space mission. Likely intimately familiar with the space technology in which they are flying, and perhaps a co-developer of it. Much more like a test pilot, deep sea diver, or technical mountain climber than a so-called "space tourist." An example of the character and training of this type of person is the late Steve Fossett, or various mountain climbers who attempt, and only some live through, the ascent and descent of K2. An example of the sort of mission that someone might do would be an ultra-low-weight, single person (more in a space suit than a space capsule [but I realize this technology proposal would be a whole 'nuther discussion]) to the surface of the moon and return mission -- quite doable with today's technology just as Steve Fossett flew non-stop circumnavigating the earth. The risk is very high. Persons undertaking such a mission might understand that there is a high probability of failure and, as you know, failure in space with an ultra-light system would mean death. (For a related example of humans pushing the edge, see here.) The point is that this sort of mission would in no way be appropriately labeled space tourism. But I would hope companies or teams developing such technology would definitely be included within such a Wikipedia list as you propose.

With this continuum in mind, I want to now voice my opinion more explicitly. I don't believe we should create a new list on Wikipedia that is so narrow that it excludes any companies who are endeavoring to get any of these human folks going to space. Thus, I think the name of your proposed article should not include Space Tourism in the title. This is all intended as Food for thought. I hope you found it thought-provoking. alt.space MERGE to NewSpace

Hi. I see you completed the merge of Alt.space to NewSpace. I have no complaint about the merge, as I was one of the supporters of that merge on Talk:NewSpace, and I had even prior to that, made positive comments about the (then incipient) merge process on alt.space quite some time ago.

I do think that you ought to place a comment yourself on the Talk:NewSpace section, for the record, on your position on the merge, if you have one. And second, it seems that a comment is warranted on the Talk page that you have, then, after all and in accordance with Wikipedia policy effected the merge. Hi Anxietycello, a note on phasing out the word 'Astronaut'

There was something I had forgotten to mention in the wikiproject spaceflight response, about use of the term Astronaut. In the ISS article I had phased out the word in most of it's instances as it was not correct where it applies to cosmonauts as well. Astronauts are European or US crew, and Cosmonauts are Soviet/Russian crew. Chinese crew are both, depending on which language the Chinese agency is publishing in, and in a minority of instances taikonauts. The word 'crew' has worked extremely well with no reverts/edits, and the words cosmonaut or astronaut is just used for named individuals. I'd suggest that in instances like 'Astronautical hygiene' it could become 'spaceflight hygiene' or whatever the article is moved to. Eventually the crew heading for Mars will have one of each, Russian, European and Chinese (no Americans) so the phasing out of the word will last a long time where it's implemented. It's not any guideline and it hasn't been discussed much at all, I think there was a tiny few mentions on the ISS talkpage, probably mostly by me, but it's just something I thought you may wish to consider. Hi Anxietycello

There is a new and brilliant editor called Jssteil (talk · contribs) who is doing a great job adding to wikipedia, I personally don't know a huge amount about the differences between portals and articles, however I do know the difference between co-operation and wp:bite. I learnt by getting mauled on the ISS article, anyhow I'm not keen to see a very good editor get the same treatment as I did.

Jssteil was brought to my attention here. I first asked a host of the teahouse to assist, but that didn't work really. I tried the oceans 11 approach (where some art thieves who wanted to speak with another art thief 'opened dialogue' by stealing from that art thief's personal collection) which worked wonderfully (see his talkpage). I fixed a concern about 'acknowledgements' on the portal page today.

In the past, the treatment that has been handed out on the ISS page has seen co-author Leebrandoncremer (talk · contribs) leave, and the work of Ralfvandebergh (talk · contribs) discarded without a thought. I wrote a stub article about Ralf Vandebergh after rescuing his work, which he has been kind enough to donate. Lee's work and images speak volumes for themselves.

I do not know if you still have an interest in the space medicine articles, or time to edit, but I would be overjoyed to see you two work together, I expect it would make his editing experience a great deal better. Penyulap ☏ 10:25, 4 Jun 2012 (UTC)

Raptor rocket engine

Hi Anxietycello, good to see you around Spaceflight articles again.

I just saw your addition of the comparison table on Raptor (rocket engine). I have no problem with the table, but all parts of it should have reliable source citations for each claim. Several of the numbers that you've used in the table were previously in the article prose, and had been tagged for some time that sources for the claims were needed.

Since you are an experienced editor, I did not revert the change. But you should definitely get over there and cite the info you have sources for, while leaving the {{citation needed}} tags in place (with the older dates of when sources were requested) on any numbers you don't have sources for. That will allow other editors to help improve the article, while allowing reasonable time for the sources to be provided on the legacy claims. The new claims, added by you today, of course need sources right away to remain in the article.

Hey Ac. I see you are not logging on to Wikipedia much nowadays, so I went in and cleaned this up for you. But please do endeavor to not drop any existing {{citation needed}} tags when you build tables like this in articles, and please ensure you add inline citations for new claims you add to such tables.

New page patrolling, I came across the History of SpaceX aricle which you have just split off from the main article. IMO the parent article is not really too long; I don't think that any of the aerospace company articles I have worked on have been so split. But then they are not replete with loads of sourced but trivial information about funding &c. Imo if the parent article was given a good haircut there would be no need for a separate article. comments at Krakatoa Archipelago talk page. The tendency for early stage wikipedia to have massive one size fits all info about a subject - viz Jakarta, then for adventurous editors to create extra to try to reduce the clutter of massive oversized items (hi), then for non mobile device users to re-consolidate and remove peripheral items in the name of whatever, then, the resurrection of the real life complexities (Krakatoa archipelago) - there is a need to be very careful the wheel is not reinvented - specially as the former scheme that got brutalised - still needs to be considered...
