Welcome

Hi, Albany NY,Welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Before getting too in-depth, you may want to read about the Five pillars of Wikipedia and simplified ruleset. If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ , plus if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. And if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my user talk page or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will be by to help you shortly.

Additional tips

Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!

  • If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
  • You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too. Five will get you the datestamp only.
  • You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
  • If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
  • If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
  • If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

I have done the requested work (from your request to the Graphic Lab). You can see the finished product here. Thanks for making a request! -YK Times 01:07, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Albany, just thought i would drop a line and let you know that I started a page for the CEC. Since you seem to be the person most-interested in Albany around here, I figured you would like to take a look and throw your two cents in - keep in mind, its still very "stubby" at the moment. As you've probably seen, i've been dabbling with some albany material, especially the NYSM page - if you have any comments or critiques of what I write, please don't hesitate to let me know.

But I have a question about the CEC that you might be able to answer - among many of the pages around here, it says that the building is 10 stories tall. However, there is an 11th floor (where OCE staff are located) while the 4th floor appears, at least to me, to be at least 2 stories. Do you know how the stories are counted? -- Oaxaca dan 05:34, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Oaxaca dan, I'm glad you started the CEC page; it looks great. I added an infobox and geolinks template. Concerning the number of floors, I got the number ten from Emporis. They usually seem to be correct, but they could be wrong in this case. Feel free to fix the floor number on the affected pages. (I don't know how they count floors.) In regards to the museum page, thanks for adding all that information. Perhaps one of us could add a brief description of each permanent exhibit (like the descriptions of the research projects); I think this would enhance the page. Finally, thank you for creating the category "Buildings and structures in Albany, New York". I've been meaning to do that but never got around to it. Please contact me if you have any more questions of comments. --Albany NY 19:32, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good - I'll do a little dabbling with the museum exhibit descriptions (at least, the ones I can off the top of my head). I saw the floor reference on that Emporis page, and I guess what it comes down to is that I just don't know if floors are counted differently among engineers/architects then what it says in the elevators. Its a very minor detail, so I don't think we need to loose too much sleep over it. No problem with making the cat and the other stuff, and it's good to find someone actually interested in Albany. Take care -- Oaxaca dan 19:50, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We need to talk.

First of all I'd like to thatnk you for cleaning up Rene Paul Chambellan. It was pretty much my baby until RPC,s grandson showed up and added some invaluable inside stuff, like his picture, but the article got a bit lopsided and I'd not taken the time to fix it. It now looks great. Your picture is another good addition, but I am wondering if you could shoot something lower so that the details of the sculpture can be seen better? One of the problems with architectural sculpture is that it is often hard to see and while your picture is a great example of that . . . something closer would be (opinion) better. Moving on. I have done over 20 years research into the life and work of Corrado Parducci and the last thing he did, as age 80 or so, was a lintel in one of the chambers of the New York State Capitol building that included a portrait of HH Richardson. I have a picture somewhwere of him working on it in his studeo in Detroit, but nothing of it in situ. IS that something you could shoot sometime? I was in Albany years ago and some of the pictures that I took thre can be found in Charles Keck, HH Richardson, and J. Massey Rhind - but none for my man Parducci. Life is supposed to be interesting. Carptrash 15:30, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaning up the RPC page was no problem. I also did some work on the Chanin Building page. I'm sorry the Home Savings Bank picture isn't zoomed in enough; I took it as a general structural picture more than a sculpture-detail one. In regards to the Capitol, the carvings inside of it are magnificent. Unfortunately, new security measures put in place following September 11, 2001 make it harder to enter the building. --Albany NY 19:32, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I have been told several times by fellows carrying guns that it is a crime to "photo recon a federal building." That means take a picture of. i have found that it is often possible to ask around and get permission, but NOT always. Your picture of the City Hall will probably get removed from Richardsonian Romanesque because the article is about buildings influenced by HH and not ones by him. See you around, Carptrash 00:00, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I should have realized that the picture didn't belong. I removed it today. --Albany NY 14:02, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
However since you have it uploaded you might as well put it in the HH gallery. Yours is a completely different view of the building and would be a nice addition. Carptrash 18:01, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea. It's a nice picture that was uploaded by Wknight94. --Albany NY 02:44, 15 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have enough knowledge about Iwerks to join the project, but I would be glad to help it with copyediting for grammar, punctuation, wording, etc. It's good that you started this project because Wikipedia's coverage of Iwerks is lacking (especially when compared to IMAX coverage). NYS Education building

Hi Albany NY, it's a great pic you took of the NYS Education building.

Camelbinky and i are starting an article about the building, now in a sandbox at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Capital District/sandbox New York State Department of Education Building, which will be another use of your pic. It would be great if you wanted to help develop the article. The article could use several pics, or perhaps a whole gallery. Did you take more? I gather that the building has a really long or grand colonnade, perhaps record-setting in some way. Do you have any pictures (or could you take one) showing the length of the colonnade? Please feel free to chat at wt:capdis or any other way, i'll watchlist here for now. doncram (talk) 08:39, 4 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doncram, I'm really glad you like the picture. I see that Wadester16 has uploaded another image that gives a better sense of the length of the colonnade. I may be able to take a different one, but for now you might consider placing a request at the CD Wikiproject's image requests page.
In regards to the article, it looks like a great start. I will see about making some edits to it soon. It may be a good idea to take a direct quotation from the NRHP application as a source for information about the colonnade's significance. Also, do you know when the museum left the Education Building? I know that it opened in the Cultural Education Center in 1976, but I don't know if it was closed (and for how long) before the new location opened. If we can find this out, it would be good to add to the article. --Albany NY (talk) 04:15, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge won't open in 2013?

Are you suggesting that the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge won't open in 2013? It's not a grammar change, it's a factual change you've made. A bridge can be completed and not open. The one does not imply the other. - Denimadept (talk) 05:13, 31 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Viewliner

Hi there. I've come to bother you because you seem to be active on Albany topics, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Capital District doesn't get much traffic. Amtrak is testing a brand-new Viewliner II baggage car at the Albany–Rensselaer (Amtrak station). See here for discussion and here for a picture of the car. This is the first such car produced, the first new Viewliner in almost twenty years and the first new single-level baggage car in decades. I was hoping you might be in a position to take a photograph of it, or to point me in the direction of someone who could. To the best of my knowledge it's still there, but it probably won't be much longer. Thanks, Mackensen (talk) 12:52, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Central Ave

What do you know about the history of Central Ave Albany/Colonie and State St Nisky/Schenectady? It used to be called the Albany-Schenectady Turnpike and was built in the 1790's and is of extreme historic importance because it was the nation's main shipping route from the East Coast to the Midwest before the Erie Canal was built. I wrote a pretty good bunch about it in the article Central Avenue, Albany, New York but I'm no expert.

MOS notice on Style, section headings

Dear Albany, NY: You posted an MOS on Style. Can you provide examples of what needs to be adjusted in the article to bring it in compliance with Wiki rules on Style? --Lord Such&Such (talk) 15:38, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

All of the guidelines are at WP:HEAD. Which article are you asking about specifically? --Albany NY (talk) 22:04, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Are the Style corrections I've made to Mervyn LeRoy satisfactory re: Italics? Any other Style issues you've noted? --Lord Such&Such (talk) 15:45, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your edits. Many of the film titles are still not italicized. See the sections "Director at M-G-M", "Comedies, melodramas and a literary remake: 1946-1950", and "Return to director-producer" (bold film titles). --Albany NY (talk) 15:59, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the heads up. Will do. Just to say, I was under the (incorrect) impression that linking a film to its article made Italics superfluous. Clearly, that was a misapprehension. --Lord Such&Such (talk) 16:09, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As regard to headings, I'd like to emphasis the the films within a chronological period for LeRoy, and I've done that. HOWEVER, I do not wish to confer upon each of these (relatively) minor films in his oeuvre with a pair of "equal signs" (see MOS). Do you know of a method by which I can introduce the film title with a link to that movie AND include BOLD? This is how I currently have it set up. You apparently believe this violates MOS. Any suggestions? --Lord Such&Such (talk) 16:43, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I do not see a problem with the page as it currently stands. The MOS problem I had identified was the lack of italics, which is now fixed. You are welcome to remove the notice. --Albany NY (talk) 17:30, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've applied the MOS Style notice to my updated article John Frankenheimer. Feel free to make appropriate corrections. --Lord Such&Such (talk) 17:10, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
