Do we really need two pictures of a dilated pupil? 81.153.138.189 (talk) 17:22, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Abuse?

The article listed as a source (http://www.way2life.ru/tropikamid.html) is not very technical in its description of tropicamide abuse. It says that opiate users in Russia initially used it to dialate their pupils (which would presumably restricted from opiate use) and that the drug has subsequently been abused. It lists deleterious effects of the drug including insanity, tachycardia, and diziness and then becomes an advertisement for the phone number in the article which seems to be a rehab facility.

Perhaps there is an article that could independently varify this anecdotal account. I cannot find any others online in English that don't just quote the text from this Wikipedia article. This is an advertisement...is there anything from a medical, academic, or professional journal? --Rotellam1 (talk) 14:36, 13 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've certainly heard cases of opioid addicts using atropine eye drops to dilate their pupils, intending to conceal signs of intoxication. And other anticholinergics like trihexyphenidyl are known to have been abused in eastern europe, so it is not entirely implausible that tropicamide might be used in this way. But I agree the source doesn't seem that reliable by wikipedia standards. Meodipt (talk) 14:23, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
