Proposed merge

In stereotypy article, "Some professionals who evaluate children with autism refer to stereotypies as stimming," In stimming article, "Stimming is a jargon term for a stereotypy"

It is clear that both these terms mean the same thing and cover the same topic. They are synonyms or simply different terminology for the same thing.

We should merge and cover all uses of the same phenomenon under one article.

Does anyone agree or disagree?--Sonjaaa 12:00, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not certain that they're the same thing. I've asked others to opine. It may be a case that the articles aren't clear; I've always understood stims and stereotypies to be subtly different, although I don't have the sources to explain. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 12:03, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

They're not the same thing. "Stereotypy" is the more-academic term, and talks about just the behavior. "Stimming" also includes the hypothesis that a particular stereotyped behavior is functional, with a function related to sensory input. I've clarified the distinction by editing both articles, here and here. The "merge" template should be removed from both articles but I'll leave it there for now, in case someone disagrees. Eubulides 16:22, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK thanks for editing the articles in such a way to show that they're not just synonims, as the articles used to suggest.--Sonjaaa 17:10, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

animals

I've added a little to the animals section, hopefully its appropriately cited but I'm not used to editing academic articles Jasonisme (talk) 15:02, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jason, do you understand that stereotypies and stereotypical behaviors are not the same thing? I have never seen a major review article that associates Tourette syndrome and stereotypy; we must take care with extending results of primary sources without secondary review. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:46, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, on further reading it seems I rushed into that one. I was reading into the subject from an anatomical point of view, and kept getting references to stereotypies being a symptom of tourettes, but having read more there doesn't seem to be consensus on this. Having said that, there also seems to be variability in the use of the words "stereotypies" and "stereotypical behaviours". Even the wikipedia article on stereotypical behaviour seems to equate them with stereotypies, so I'm not sure if that could do with clearing up? This is still a bit new to me, I'll have to stop being rash in editing articles I don't have an in depth knowledge of Jasonisme (talk) 17:47, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing out that article; I wasn't aware of its existence. Yes, there is quite a bit of confusion, but Tourette's publications and textbooks are careful to distinguish the stereotyped movements of TS from stereotypies, which are associated with autism. Move

Comments copied from page deleted to make way for move. Gimmetrow 20:54, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and did what I said I was going to do without waiting because it seemed like these articles arent edited much. I dont see how it could possibly be harmful. Haplolology Talk/Contributions 21:57, 26 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure where you discussed this, both Eubulides and I regularly edit this article, but the talk page got left back at Talk:Stereotypy (psychiatry). When you move, you should also move the talk page. I don't know how to fix it now. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:57, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Talk page moved here. Gimmetrow 20:54, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I didnt technically do a move. I took two articles and pasted them together into a third article whose title was different from both of them. Moving the talk pages seemed like a bad idea so I didnt do it. Besides, only an administrator would be able to get it to actually show the history in the talk page instead of just being one big copy paste. So I assume Gimmetrow must be an administrator since the talk page history does seem to have been copied. There's still the other article (Stereotypical behavior) but that one was much quieter even than Stereotypy (psychiatry) has been. Haplolology Talk/Contributions 23:12, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This page had been a disambiguation page, so the content was a cut-and-paste move of some sort. I suspect the history up to the disambiguation should be moved to stereotypy (disambiguation), and the history from stereotypy (psychiatry) moved here. I intentionally did not merge the talk page histories so they could be separated later if appropriate. Gimmetrow 23:45, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"non-human animals" is redundant, unless the point is trying to be made that humans are a sub-set of animals, which is distracting. Also, explaining the "why" of the animal stereotypys seems to fall directly into what my Psychology professor called the "Anthropormorphic Fallacy". I'm no expert here, but it red-flagged immediately while I was reading it.

Further, I question whether the animal section needs to be included here. Clearly there is going to be more interest in this subject as it applies to people vs. animals. Consider if you will the effect of looking up this disorder as it may have some relevance to someone in your own family and what the impact might be if most of the wiki is dedicated to how it applies to animals. I think the two should be split. (I don't know how to sign my post.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonny Quick (talkcontribs) 15:12, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with merge

The merge of Stimming into this article had some problems, which I also discuss in Talk:Stimming #Problems with merge. The rephasing of stimming wasn't right, and I removed it. The discussion of terminology like "stimming" and "punding" doesn't belong in the lead, so I created a new section Terminology to hold it. The resulting article still has some problems with WP:WEIGHT given to illicit drugs, and sourcing. Eubulides (talk) 17:52, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ICD-9

I think the ICD-9 code is wrong because there it reads Stereotypic movement disorder but this is a different concept. Andres (talk) 15:27, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct (this is a symptom, not a condition), and I have removed the incorrect infobox added in 2008 by User:Arcadian. As I am not a fan of infoboxes, I have pinged him so he might re-add a corrected infobox. Thank you for bringing this to attention! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:33, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
