Redirect to polyethylenglycol (PEG)?

Shouldn't the page redirect to polyethylene glycol (PEG)? Macrogol and PEG are as far as I know identical, they even use the same nomenclature. If there are no objections I'll replace the page with a redirect. -- Panoramix303 (talk) 23:49, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'd have no objection, but I'd also say that this article has a health and medical focus and has information along those lines not in the PEG article. That info would need to be added to the other, which while not exactly long also isn't exactly short. In any case this proposal was made over eight years ago and wasn't done.   • Agree with merging. It's the exact same substance, and the articles should be merged. Alternatively, we could change the title to Macrogol to "Macrogol for medical use" or "Polyethyelene glycol (medicine)." I think concerns over a combined article being excessively long is the only reason to keep them separate, but a merged article would be a reasonable length. Tasteless?

"It is dissolved in a glass of water to create a clear, tasteless and odorless solution and is swallowed." - as someone who uses this on a daily basis, I'll have to disagree. It is indeed colorless when dissolved in water, but it has a nauseating aftertaste. While macrogol itself may be tasteless, it is always combined with sodium and potassium salts in pharmaceutical products; consequently, it has a bitter and salty taste. The statement by 87.127.152.41 is simply untrue. When sold as a laxative -- and that's the only reason to consume it daily -- it is pure, with no added salts -- 100% PEG-3350. Paleolith (talk) 23:22, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It is true that pure polyethylene glycol is entirely tasteless. The unpleasant taste in UK Laxido is due to the added salts, not the PEG-3350. Golytely (PEG with electrolyte solution) also contains added salts, and is well known to have a taste (generally regarded as an unpleasant taste). Pure vs additives

I modified the "available forms" paragraph to clarify that PEG as a laxative is pure, and that salts and other electrolytes are only added to the forms intended for purging. I don't claim to have done a very good job, and certainly did not add any references. But the previous version was so blatantly wrong that I felt I had to do something. That's not true. In the UK Laxido (for chronic constipation or faecal impaction) is macrogol 3350 + NaCl + NaBicarb + KCl. I will amend the paragraph.
