Old talk

"In 1889 the basis for a major growth of Luanda was laid as Governor Brito Capelo opened the gates of an aqueduct which supplied the city with water, a formerly scarce resource. After this a good deal of unexpected growth increased dramatically towards 1975, with high-points such as an 1872 report which called Luanda the "Paris of Africa" for the growth that the city had shown."

That sentence doesn't make any sense, so I'm changing 1872 to 1972, which would make much more sense. /130.235.57.231 22:25, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Luanda is the smallest city of Angola, not the largest. Joaquim Quino

Umm... 'Joaquim Quino', obviously you are hideously misinformed. Luanda is far from being the smallest city of Angola. Think before you post. Samoen 17:16, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"By the time of Angolan independence in 1975, Luanda was a modern city and the majority of the city's population was of Portuguese origin, with very few Africans permitted to live there." - Since part of my family lived in Luanda by that time, I can assess this information as being untrue. There was no such thing as apartheid in Angola, so "Africans" were allowed to live there as everybody else (money being, as it is today, the only limitation).

"After independence, most of the Portuguese left, many travelling overland to South Africa, and some carrying out acts of sabotage before they departed." - Any sources supporting this? Before changing anything at all, I'd like to hear some opinions about these two topics. Thanks! Nomad 22:28, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've just read the page about Luanda which is good but given that I drive to the port accross the unfinished railway which is not connected to the original station everyday, I'm not sure that the quote about the Luanda railway being complete is true. Additional ballast and track is being laid and a road over-bridge being built. Thanks Robertjcthomson (talk) 19:51, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Most expensive city in the world 2007

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&sid=aRJ5RSaKokK0&refer=japan

Any reason for this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.108.16.189 (talk) 02:17, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

They're measuring most expensive city for expatriates, i.e. foreign businessmen/diplomats/etc. The housing market for expatriates is rather peculiar, depending on all sorts of factors ranging from government rules (it's not always permissible to live just anywhere) to security needs (foreigners are commonly targeted in some countries so need extra protection). So I wouldn't say it's a good indicator of how expensive it is for normal people. --Delirium (talk) 07:59, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In 2011, Luanda is again rated as the most expensive city in the world - for expatriates! And User:Delirium is entirely right: this has got nothing to do with the life of normal inhabitants of the city. But attention: as inequalities run high in Angola, and especially in Angola, situations are quite diverse, and estatistically computed indicators have little, if anything, to do with the life of the (different strata of) people. Gallery needs improvement

There are only photographs of very modern and polished parts of the city but no photos of misery and dirt of the non-asfalted roads and small houses next to them. That's what real Luanda is to me as a person who worked there as a volunteer. For my (self-made) photos of Luanda, see my personal photo gallery. I have no problems with copyrights or permissions so anyone can use my photographs. Nejko (talk) 15:32, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures

I find the picture that now figures in the article frankly outrageous. It shows a few glamorous spots of the city and thus gives an entirely wrong idea of what Luanda actually is. At least 80% of the city anything but glamorous; the picture is totally misleading as to the way Luanda is overall structured and shaped, and an insult to the millions who live there. I sincerely hope somebody has more appropriate pictures. Aflis (talk) 11:46, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So then why don't you fix it, if you have apropriate photos please add them. Roger (talk) 14:48, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Outrageous? What is outrageous about the pictures?--Cruks (talk) 15:03, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The article could probably do a better job of covering the problems and issues faced by the city. The current photos are accurate in that they are photos of Luanda so "outrageous" is far too strong a reaction. Roger (talk) 15:31, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Dodger67 completely, any case if Aflis has better pictures he can upload them or tell us, what kind of pics he wants to see really in the article. So we are waiting for facts from him.--Cruks (talk) 10:38, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The pictures that I criticized were an insult to the ordinary people living in Luanda. Luckily, somebody had the good sense to replace them. As to myself, furnishing pictures lies outside my competence: that is a limitation in WP, I know, but I cannot help it. I am glad others are good at it, which is as it should be: users pooling their different competences. Aflis (talk) 11:51, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Which pictures do you mean exactly? You havent told us yet.--Cruks (talk) 16:02, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I thought that was clear from the beginning, but apparently I was wrong there: I protested against the picture, composed of several shots, which User: Laropilartes introduced in the article on the 20th, and which luckily has disappeared since. I have no objection to the other pictures in the article. Aflis (talk) 21:55, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Currently, repeating 3 times?

It is not necessary to repeat "currently" three times in a paragraph. The article is about Angola nowadays, and not about the past. That is clear enough.--Cruks (talk) 11:27, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Luanda Municipality

This page seems to speak of "Luanda" in the sense of the entire provice. In my opinion, as with other city pages, the official statistics in the infobox and demgraphic subsection should reflect the city proper, or Lunada Município. What is the land area measurement and population of the Luanda municipality by itself? There should be some distinction made between the province and the central municipality, which is the capital of the province and Angola as a whole. --Criticalthinker (talk) 08:46, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

agreed. LibStar (talk) 10:56, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. -- Aflis (talk) 11:31, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I did a little research and was able to find the land area of Luanda Municipality, but there doesn't seem to be any modern population data for either the province or the municipality. The municipality doesn't even seem to have a website, and the province's website is rather sparse and outdated when it comes to the municipalities. I believe Angola is working to gets its national statistics agency online, so there is no way to look up the population even from the previous census. Anyway, I did a bit of updating to what I could find, and perhaps I'll be able to do more as they put more information online. --Criticalthinker (talk) 12:51, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sisters Cities

Belo Horizonte (Br) is sister city to Luanda.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belo_Horizonte

However, Luanda isn't Belo Horizonte's sister? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.206.162.69 (talk) 23:55, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think this requires discussion, though it's nice that you brought it to our attention. If you can, source it and put it on there. Smileguy91Spread the knowledge! 23:38, 22 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What is missing from the recently created city timeline article? Please add relevant content. Contributions welcome. Thank you. -- M2545 (talk) 16:19, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
