Shouldn't things like this go in Wikipedia space? I've deleted the article space versions. Let me know where you'd like to have the last two runs placed. Acroterion (talk) 15:39, 6 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Files

In pages such as Wikipedia:WikiProject_Academic_Journals/Popular_pages, File entries should have a colon in them [[:File:Example.svg]] so they don't display. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 23:11, 10 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Further, that page should only be in the Category:Lists of popular pages by WikiProject. The current laundry list of categories is wrong. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 04:51, 11 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And why are many articles belonging to this project not included? I don't see how the current selection was made. --Randykitty (talk) 16:58, 11 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Headbomb and Michael Bednarek: How does it look now? Kaldari (talk) 05:43, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The concerns raised above seem to have addressed. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 05:54, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well I can't find any instances of a file being listed in the popular pages, so it's hard to know if it's been fixed or not. But if you say it's been fixed, I'll take your word for it. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 10:55, 24 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry for the late reply, I didn't see this until today. Yeah, that was an error and has been fixed. Won't happen again. Sorry for the inconvenience. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 18:20, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of popular pages by WikiProject

@NKohli (WMF): Thanks for updating these pages again. Is it possible to add Category:Lists of popular pages by WikiProject next time?. They used to be in that category. Christian75 (talk) 08:16, 27 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Christian75:, yes, the Category will appear on the pages next time the bot runs. :) Thanks for reporting! -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 18:19, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Database_reports/Editors_eligible_for_Autopatrol_privilege

Hi there, I'm wondering if it might be possible to run the bot to update the Editors eligible for Autopatrol privilege report. If I'm reading the history correctly, it last updated March 30, 2017. It's the subject of a good deal of interest at Wikipedia_talk:New_pages_patrol/Reviewers as we try to find some way to make inroads to the new pages backlog, so having a current report would be so helpful. Thanks much! Innisfree987 (talk) 06:47, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, we're currently working on improving that report. It's extremely slow to run currently and needs a bunch of improvements. I'll let you know when we update it. Thank you! -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 04:03, 26 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for your attention to this NKohli (WMF)--I've noticed the bot's tried to run a couple times lately and just blanked the page, so I figured there must be something going on with it. Really appreciate your work to sort it out! Innisfree987 (talk) 19:22, 27 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Innisfree987: The new and improved report is here! Let us know what you think. Regards, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:01, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Request

Could you add WikiProject Evolutionary Biology to the next project run please? Also incidentally, can I just you add instructions on some of the category pages/talk page etc. for how to request a project to be added to the popular pages list? Thanks 193.60.83.75 (talk) 19:27, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I've updated the link on this bot's user page to point to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Tech/Popular_pages_bot which includes instructions on how to subscribe projects via User:Community Tech bot/Popular pages config.json. I've added your project (diff), it should run with June's update. — TBolliger (WMF) (talk) 20:15, 16 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Request: please add "Wikipedia:Tip of the day"

Greetings, Saw the newest Popular pages at WP Catholicism, most helpful to cleanup a lot of articles. Could you please add Wikipedia:Tip of the day to the bot. I am somewhat computer challenged, and not sure how to add. Regards, JoeHebda • (talk) 21:21, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wrapping timestamp in onlyinclude tags

Hi. Re: <https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Database_reports/Editors_eligible_for_Autopatrol_privilege&diff=783110734&oldid=783057930&diffonly=1>, we can probably find another way to extract the timestamp these days instead of using transclusion, but that's what we're currently using with Template:DBR row, so we have to support it for now. --MZMcBride (talk) 05:47, 31 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

MusikAnimal, MusikAnimal, NKohli: Hi. ^^^ The report updates are breaking Wikipedia:Database reports. --MZMcBride (talk) 20:12, 1 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Database reports/Orphaned talk pages

The bot seems to be catching a number of these that are not, in fact, "orphaned" – e.g.:

Not sure why this is happening, but I thought I'd bring it to your attention... --IJBall (contribstalk) 16:49, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

FTR, the bot is still catching these, as of the June 21 pass. --IJBall (contribstalk) 01:17, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Popular pages - how frequently does the bot run?

I am eagerly looking forward to seeing Wikipedia:WikiProject Queensland/Popular pages. I added it to the list about a month ago. Thanks Kerry (talk) 23:15, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. The bot runs once a month. It takes the list on the project list page on the 2nd of every month and then generates reports for those projects. This project should be updated soon. I'll verify the config to make sure it's correct. Thanks! -- Community Tech bot (talk) 01:05, 4 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Networking task force

I'm trying to get the popular pages report working for the computer networking task force. I have set up an entry for "Computing/Computer Networking task force" there is a report now but only one article is listed. I think the problem has to do with how most task force articles are declared using the computing talk template. ~Kvng (talk) 14:16, 9 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the report and my apologies for my delayed response. The problem was that the name field for the report contained "Computing/Computer Networking task force" but instead the correct name was "Computing/Networking task force". Both of those names exist in the database and presumably somebody used the former at some point but as of today, the latter is used by the project. An easy way to find out which is the right project name is to use the API to see what articles are contained in the project. Compare the articles in list for the correct project versus list for the incorrect project.
I've fixed the problem and the report page has been updated. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 23:44, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Other languages

Does this bot work in other languages? Would be amazing if it was :-) Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 16:25, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. I would guess you're talking about the Popular pages bot. The bot can potentially work in other languages, if those projects have a sane-ish way or tagging and assessing their wikiprojects and related pages. It took a lot of work to ensure we were correctly capturing all wikiprojects, subprojects, task forces etc. for enwiki. I wish there was a standardized way to handle wikiprojects across projects. :( I do believe we can almost-readily use the bot on French and potentially, Spanish, if there's interest. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 22:35, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
User talk:NKohli (WMF) Can we simple make the assumption that EN WP has the total number of articles in the WikiProject in question and than use Wikidata interlanguage links to create the list in other languages? That is what we did for one of our prior analysis.
Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 03:17, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Doc James: I'd be hesitant to do that because - a) That is a huge project in and of itself - to compile wikiproject article lists for other languages based on enwiki's definition and then feed it to the bot and b) WikiProjects are currently in the "community" domain and I think other communities won't be very welcoming to having wikiprojects if they don't currently use them or want them or maybe because their definition of what's important/what needs to be clustered might be very different from enwiki's.
Having said that, I'd note that one of our projects in the wishlist this year is Article Alerts for more languages. We might be able to come up with a framework as part of that project that could work as a basis for giving popular pages bot a collection of articles - whether they are a wikiproject or not. There's a lot up in the air about it right now but I'm hoping we can come up with something that makes Wikiprojects optional for communities that still want important features (such as this bot). -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 18:26, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
One would need to ask communities if they want this of course. I know a few do with respect to medicine and would be happy to ask more their preference if there was a willingness to build the tool. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 04:19, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Forgotten articles

Hi botty!
Wikipedia:Database reports/Forgotten articles hasnt been updated in three months. Whats up with that?
Kindly ping me while replying. Thanks. —usernamekiran(talk) 08:03, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to have been fixed. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 22:30, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Seems to have stopped working again? :) Sam Walton (talk) 10:00, 12 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The report query takes a long while to run and sometimes it gets a timeout. :( I can trigger another run but no guarantees. This project needs way more love than I'm able to provide in my spare time. I'll make a not to put it up for the next wishlist survey. -- NiharikaKohli (talk) 10:06, 12 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Usernamekiran: Hmm, seems like it was updated 3 days ago again. I think that the query takes way too long to run which is why it is not getting generated as often. If it happens again, please let me know and I will bring this to the attention of the proper engineering team. Thank you. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 15:35, 28 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Code for Forgotten articles report?

Hi,

I couldn't find the code for the Wikipedia:Database reports/Forgotten articles report on the bot's user page. Is this code available? If so, under which license?

Best,

Jambsinter (talk) 18:48, 9 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Jambsinter: it can be found here along with all the other reports. It's under GPL. Is there something you need it for? -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 05:34, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Yes, I would like to test it on a private mediawiki installation. Do you know how would I go about it? Jambsinter (talk) 12:32, 10 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Jambsinter: Interesting question. The bot as it is currently queries the wiki databases, which are public, and then uses the API (also public) to post the report on the wiki. The bot runs on an external server (ToolForge) which provides access to the wiki databases. Using such a setup on a private wiki would be tricky. To purely test it, you can run the query on the database, if you have access to it. To actually run it periodically like this bot does might not be feasible. If you know how to write basic MediaWiki extensions, you can write a small extension that adds a special page for this report. An example of a special page of a similar kind of report is Special:UnconnectedPages. I can provide some guidance on how to do that if needed. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 03:57, 11 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@NKohli (WMF): perhaps I didn't explain myself well, but I want to run this report against my own database, not Wikipedia's or WMF's. Would that be feasible with the available code? Jambsinter (talk) 13:37, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Jambsinter: I understood you perfectly. You can use the query code but using the bot code itself will be tricky as I explained above. I haven't worked on private wikis at all so I'm not sure how it will work. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 16:32, 14 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've put the bot into dry run mode so once the block expires it will not continue posting until we remediate the problem. I'm currently working on two solutions to prevent this from reoccurring. Exclude files nominated for speedy deletion as a copyright violation

We really should not be adding notifications for files nominated on Commons using c:Template:Copyvio. These are generally the most uncontroversial of deletions, and there is no corresponding discussion for editors to take part in really. Either it is, or is not a clear cut copyright violation. If it isn't then someone will convert it to a DR, and the talk page should be notified once the DR is opened. GMGtalk 17:28, 1 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That's a good point GreenMeansGo. The other purpose of the notification (besides asking people to participate in discussion) is to encourage people to take off the image from the article ahead of the deletion. I found an example in the category: Jacqueline_MacInnes_Wood_(March_2017_crop).jpg which is embedded on enwiki. So the notification on the wiki would let people remove it pro-actively. Do you think that's useful? -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 18:55, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Umm... well NKohli (WMF), the turnaround for nominations for speedy delete copyright violations on Commons is usually pretty quick in my experience. A bot that removes images in c:CAT:CV might be more useful, but then it would also probably need to be able to replace them if if was a bad nomination, or if it's complicated enough to get converted into a c:COM:DR. Having a human en.wiki side do that...pretty much requires them to be an experienced Commons user, and/or actively monitor the outcome on Commons, which I don't think a lot of people who aren't already active there are going to be willing to do. Even in the example you give, that's a page with 62 watchers, and none of them had the good fortune to see the talk page post and remove the image before filedelinkerbot got to it some 16 hours later. GMGtalk 19:21, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's true. The impact on English wikipedia isn't probably that much, especially because there's a bot which takes the image off of the article after it gets deleted. But I think this could be quite important for other languages which don't have such bots at its disposal. The point of the bot is to simply inform the wiki user that the image is flagged for deletion and they should take it off of the article. They shouldn't have to be an experienced Commons user for that to happen, ideally. -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 19:36, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I thought this bot was doing that already on all projects, but was blocked on en.wiki in preference for Filedelinkerbot? GMGtalk 19:41, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, nevermind, looks like it was replaced with this bot which seems to be humming along alright. GMGtalk 19:43, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. I wasn't aware the CommonsDelinker bot works for all wikis. That's incredibly useful. I agree with your point about speedy deletion files probably not being very useful for this. I'll file a task for this. Thanks! -- NKohli (WMF) (talk) 19:54, 3 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tagged pages

Hello, I started a discussion at WP:BOTREQ#Bot to generate list of editor's creations which have been tagged for improvements and it was suggested you may be able to help.

I was suggesting a bot for listing all articles an editor has created which have improvement tags on them. This would be useful for New Page Patrol: it would save us sending multiple messages about an editor's creations (which can cause upset) and show clearly what the problem is and what articles have been identified as needing improvements. This has been requested more than once of me by an editor and I've had to find and list them manually. It would also benefit other editors - I would love to look over which of my creations have tags and improve them. This would give creators (if they want to) the chance to make improvements and bring down the backlogs. Is it feasible?

Wikipedia:Database reports/Editors eligible for Autopatrol privilege tracks this for some users, with the code on github, overseen by MusikAnimal (WMF), so maybe it could be done for all? Thanks for any advice you can offer, Boleyn (talk) 09:02, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Boleyn: It would be really really slow to track the creations of all users - maybe on an "opt-in" basis, where you can opt someone else in too - basically, only track people that someone wants to track, be in a new page reviewer, or the editor themselves --DannyS712 (talk) 09:04, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That could be useful, DannyS712, and would really be a benefit. Boleyn (talk) 13:26, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Commons deletion notice does not include template talk?

There is an alert placed on Talk:Singapore regarding a deletion discussion. However, the file is not used directly on the page but in the template, Template:Largest Cities in Southeast Asia. The template is used as a navigation aid, and probably not closely looked into until now. I have left a courtesy ping on that template page as well, but shouldn't the warning be placed on the template talk page as well? If the alert is meant for a file transcluded through template on the page, can the bot indicate such as? – robertsky (talk) 01:24, 4 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Missing license tags and notifications

I noticed that images used on Wikipedia which are nominated for "speedy deletion" through missing license tags aren't listed. Why? Those rarely get resolved and commonly public domain files are tagged as having "a missing license" solely because the original uploader doesn't know how Wikimedia Commons works and just adds the wrong license information to an otherwise public domain file. It would be wiser to just list all potential deletions. --Donald Trung (talk) 07:12, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • I just saw that speedy deletions are also listed, but these are listed much slower apparently. Is that a bug or something? --Donald Trung (talk) 07:26, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Late notifications

These notifications were almost a month too late and in some cases these files have already been deleted on Wikimedia Commons. Is this a bug? --Donald Trung (talk) 07:34, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Popular pages - recent entries

Noting that the entries beginning with Writing have not been updated in two months. It's like the bot has run out of spaces to update or the job has timed out after 864 entries. Any clue as to what's up? Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 03:34, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sammi Brie: This is also true of the Emmerdale task force popular pages article, which hasn't seen an update in over 2 months. I thought it was a glitch to miss June, but to miss July too suggests something is wrong. Bungle (talkcontribs) 18:39, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see the aforementioned entry is after the "Writing" one you mentioned, so it maybe just is the last few in the list that are now failing to update. Bungle (talkcontribs) 18:43, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, anyone who visits this page,

This report used to be issued each night at 05:02 UTC. But, some how, other editors and admins are "running" the script, or whatever produces this list, several times throughout the day to get reports. How is this done? I don't understand how to generate this report myself. Thanks for any advice you can offer. Liz Read! Talk! 05:06, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd still welcome a solution to this query. Liz Read! Talk! 05:07, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No response here yet but I see that Xaosflux and MusikAnimal have responded to messages at Community Tech bot's page on Meta so I'll ping you here. Thanks if you can help me figure out what other editors and admins are doing that seems to leave no paper trail on Wikipedia. Liz Read! Talk! 05:10, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz: it is possible to run this in quarry, if you don't make too big of a list and have some patience, example: quarry:query/61446. — xaosflux Talk 10:53, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this, Xaosflux. How do I go from having this quarry query to seeing a list of relevant pages besides those for Jan. 11th? How do I run an updated query? It looks like you need to download and open a file but what I'm looking for is just a list of pages on Wikipedia. That seems to be what other administrators are working with. I'm sorry to need a, "Do A, then do B" explanation. Liz Read! Talk! 03:09, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I tried "forking' it and ran it again and got a few results. I guess this is as far as I can go. Thanks again. Liz Read! Talk! 03:21, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz: yup, fork and run. The very very last line says "LIMIT 10" (which I made for an example) - you can increase this for more results if you are only getting 10; suggest 500. — xaosflux Talk 11:02, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@MusikAnimal (WMF) is popular pages running correctly? Bot seems to be updating the record page, but not the various WikiProject Pages, Sadads (talk) 22:08, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what went wrong, but it's running now :) This is the first hiccup to my knowledge since we moved the bot to VPS, so hopefully it's a rarity. I noticed the same bot task ran fine for Arabic Wikipedia. The English Wikipedia job was simply "stuck". Unfortunately that's all I know. I'll continue to monitor, and also try to make some changes so this is easier to debug should this happen again. Best, MusikAnimal talk 01:31, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bot seems to have stopped?

The bot seems to have worked okay through yesterday, but has stopped short since. Hello,

This report page is usually pretty straight-forward but tonight it is listing redirect talk pages that are not orphaned, there is a main redirect page that accompanies the talk page. So, I'm not sure what has caused this error. Thanks for any help you can offer. Liz Read! Talk! 05:10, 24 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

And it didn't list a report tonight at all. Even when there are no orphaned talk pages, it still posts a report at 05:01 UTC nightly. Liz Read! Talk! 05:13, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The above daily report seems to me to be wrong/miscalculating - it's showing myself as having had 50 articles deleted wheras I have only actually created 40 articles with none deleted by any means (5 pages show up on my log that were actually pages I had moved to draft during NPP) Josey Wales Parley 01:06, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article quality ratings moving into banner shell

This is just to let the bot operators know that a change in Template:WikiProject banner shell and Template:WPBannerMeta was made today that allows people to enter the class rating in the banner shell template, and this will then be inherited by all project banners on that page (unless they have opted out). The assessment categories should be unaffected, so I'm not sure if any changes to the bot's code will be needed. Best wishes — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:51, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think anyone monitors this page but this report didn't get generated this evening. Several other bots that issue reports on a regular basis haven't been active tonight so maybe it's a system problem. But I wanted to report this somewhere. Thanks, whoever reads this. Liz Read! Talk! 05:16, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

MusikAnimal, I saw you responded to one message on this page so maybe you could look at what's been published here since last year. Or you could tell us who to notify when there are problems with this bot. Liz Read! Talk! 05:19, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If other bots are failing too, it's probably the scheduled downtime. I wouldn't be concerned unless tomorrow comes and we still don't get a fresh report. Moving forward you can refer to User:Community Tech bot on who to contact, so in this case you contacted the right person :) Best, MusikAnimal talk 17:37, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Database reports/WikiProject Andhra Pradesh

@MusikAnimal and others in charge of this bot, I am researching WikiProject Andhra Pradesh to propose a method of increasing the activity by looking at popular pages, top edited pages. I already made a request for popular pages. If you can provide edit database report for on a monthly basis, at least for top 1000 pages, with count of edits and preferably count of not-IP, not-bot,not-AWB editors, it would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Arjunaraoc (talk) 01:01, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Arjunaraoc: - fyi, I moved Andhra Pradesh "Popular articles" page to "Popular pages" so it matches the Bot configuration. Also, changed the WP's wikilink to now point to "Popular pages". Unfortunately due to that name/spelling error, the bot missed running this month. I added a note to expect a good PP list from the Bot for mid-June 2023. Popular pages subpages?

Hey, just wondering and don't want to be greedy.  ;) I love lists like for example Wikipedia:WikiProject Role-playing games/Popular pages as it gives me a good idea of what people are looking at. There are times though, when I look through lists like that thinking "I'd like to see what articles of just this subset people are looking at" and they may not be the most popular items overall so they will appear towards the bottom of the list, and it's tough to filter out all the noise. If we already have the main Popular pages list for a WikiProject, is it possible to just do subsets for particular larger categories and all of their subcategories? Such as maybe the top 200 from Category:Role-playing games by year, the top 200 of Category:Role-playing game supplements by year and the top 100 from Category:Role-playing game designers?
