Handful of missing media

Date of "Garry Larson Cartoon Incident"

In "Research at Gombe Stream National Park" it is written twice that Jane Goodall named her chimps, which was an unconventional practice. It is redundant to state this twice. I recommend removing its first instance: "Instead of numbering the chimpanzees she observed, she gave them names such as Fifi and David Greybeard and observed them to have unique and individual personalities, an unconventional idea at the time." Reference to Dr. Goodall’s expertise and field

Dr. Goodall’s PhD is in ethology or the study of animal behavior. She is widely known for her research on the chimpanzees of Gombe National Park, but she also studied other animals elsewhere in Tanzania. She also never formally studied anthropology. Her mentor Dr. Louis Leakey did.

And for the last 30 years Jane has been an activist and advocate for the natural world, animal welfare and alleviating poverty through community-led conservation.

On the BBC Radio Four Today programme this morning [Thursday 27 April 2023], it was announced that Goodall is going to be starting a new television series soon, aimed at children, entitled "Jane's Animal Adventures". Contradiction in Africa Section

I'm not putting in a semi-protected edit request in yet as I just want to gather thoughts on this. (Although if deemed appropriate I am happy to make one).

When reading the Africa section, I noticed two issues in the third paragraph.(Which are both linked to eachother).A contradiction and a semi-dead/unconnected reference/citation.

The contradiction is that currently says that Dr Goodall was the eighth person to study for a PHD without having a bachelor's degree. Despite that earlier in the same paragraph it mentions she had attended Cambridge University in Newnham College obtaining her bachelor's degree in natural sciences. Backed up by reference 18 from Newnham College.

I then tried to check reference that was cited for (reference 3), to find that the page archive for the reference doesn't mention her PHD at all, and the second page of the reference, where I assume it had been discussed is a dead Web page (even via the wayback machine). Something is wrong, but we'll have to sort out exactly what that is quite carefully. Goodall writes (in Cambridge Alumni Magazine (CAM), no. 44, 2000, "Profile: Mirror of Humankind" by Peter Richards, pp. 10-13): "When I came up to Cambridge in 1962, I had no degree of any sort". I believe that this means that she was admitted to Cambridge to do her PhD without, as the article already states, having first gained her bachelor's degree; perhaps she then worked on both BA and PhD concurrently. If that's correct then the mystery is resolved and the sentences about "allowed to study" and "went to Newnham" are in reverse order, I'll swap them over now. I think therefore that ref [3] was correct; but we need to find an extant source to say the same thing. Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:42, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We're nearly there. I've added some sources. I think the Time and PBS sources must be slightly mistaken about the facts: for instance PBS says she got an "honorary doctorate" in 1965 (it was a full PhD), and she was "one of only a handful of people to earn that distinction without having first completed four years of college." - it'd be three years at Cambridge for a BA. I think therefore that the answer is that she was admitted to do the PhD, on (unstated) the condition she did her BA as well. It'd be helpful to have that detail in a reliable source. Excluding the fact that reference 3 needs to be replaced for this section.
Looking over her CV (Currently reference 22), the information provided by Newnham College and I will admit agreement with your final point. I think this is the set of events (using the collection of information available).
September 1961 she joins Newnham College (Cambridge University), as a PHD candidate, but obtains a BA on the way. So that between the 61/62 academic year to the 63/64 academic year she completes her BA in natsci. Upon completion, she then starts her PHD in Darwin College lasting Sept 64 to 66. The shortened amount of time for her PHD is understandable when taking into account she already had the data from her time previously at Gombe.
Meaning that she did enter university as a PHD candidate without holding any university qualifications, but by the time she actually started her thesis, she had a BA, essentially studying an integrated bachelor's and PHD course. Curious Caladonian Cat (talk) 08:39, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This article looks to be written Americans. Please note, English is not a nationality, Jane Goodall is de jure a British citizen, her mother was born in Wales, wth quite a 'Welsh' name, so it is an insult to describe her ethnicity as English, she is British.
