Merger Proposal

These two articles are almost exactly the same: Health administration and health systems management. I think they should be merged. Health administration seems the more common term, at least with a quick google search, but I don't have a strong opinion either way.--Karl.brown (talk) 16:43, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What a nuisance with all the merger proposals. The real mess with health systems is the dominance of the understanding that administration is equal to management. It is not and wll never be. The fact is that all administration appears as a burden and all management should enhance services. A better segregation of contents for two topics as existing would be appreciated, but please do not merge to save titles. I'm not sure if the word nuisance refers to me; if so, I'd appreciate if you would refrain from personal attacks in the future. The reason I proposed a merge is because, if you look at the articles as they exist today, they are almost exactly the same. For example, the lead from Health administration says "The discipline is known by many names, including health management, healthcare management, health systems management, health care systems management, and medical and health services management." The last paragraph of both articles is almost EXACTLY the same. If you look at the Master of Health Administration article, that word is littered with the word 'management', and no clear distinction is made. Note also that both articles link to Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) "CAHME is the only organization recognized to grant accreditation to individual academic programs offering a professional master's degree in healthcare management education in the United States and Canada." CAHME's own website says "CAHME accreditation is designed to foster high quality professional education for healthcare management education. The term "healthcare management" is used as the single term which includes: Healthcare Administration; Health Services Management; Hospital or other healthcare organization-specific administration and management; Health planning and evaluation; Health policy and other related activities" [1]. Check also this website: "Why Health Administration? A health administration degree will provide you with the best base possible to start a career in healthcare management. Healthcare management positions are growing at an incredible pace." [[2]]. Here is another reference, where the 'expert' refutes the idea that there is a difference between these fields: "http://en.allexperts.com/q/Health-Care-Industry-2410/2008/3/Healthcare-management-vs-Healthcare.htm" Here is another source, which says they are the same: "There is not one term for the field we are talking about or the people who practice it—healthcare management, health services administration, and other variants can be used interchangeably. People who practice in this field may be called health services executives, healthcare administrators, health services managers, or other similar names." [3] In short, both due to the existing content of the articles which overlaps a fair amount, and many of the sources cited, there does not seem to be a clear enough distinction between health administration and health management, so I think these articles should be merged. If we merge the articles, we could add a section that notes that there is confusion, and there is perhaps some minority view that is trying to make a distinction between the fields, but it would need to be backed up by references. --Karl.brown (talk) 11:48, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
