GPA or WG?

Okay, since there seems to be some disagreement about nomenclature with respect to granulomatosis with polyangiitis vs. Wegener's granulomatosis (the older term for the disease named after Friedrich Wegener, the infamous pathologist who had nazi associations (terrific)). I thought it would be best to start a discussion on the talk page (to prevent further edit warring). The issue as I see it is that while the literature on granulomatous mastitis itself is fairly sparse (that's true, I only found a handful of reviews from the last 5 years), there is a significant amount of literature discussing (and using) the now preferred term (not just a personal preference due to its more medically descriptive nature but more importantly this is the preference by mainstream medical organizations). I have provided one example from a reputable journal (Nature Reviews in Rheumatology) and can provide many others prominently feature the use of the more modern & descriptive term granulomatosis with polyangiitis over the infamous eponym Wegener's granulomatosis. The main page for GPA even prefers that term over WG and clearly explains that this term is no longer the preferred term by mainstream scientific bodies. I do not agree with Richiez that because older granulomatous mastitis reviews utilize the term WG that this article should as well given that it is no longer the preferred medical name for the disorder. That would be granulomatosis with polyangiitis. The literature as a whole needs to be examined (not just GM literature) to see which term is more mainstream/preferred and from what I see it appears to be GPA not WG. We should link to the current name of the disease as named on Wikipedia. Otherwise we should change back the name of the other article. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 01:24, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
