Amniocentesis

NPOV "see also"?

I think it's POV to include a link to life unworthy of life. There's a huge difference between mudering people because of their race or disability and voluntarily choosing to not knowingly pass on one's disability. More Science

Vague, unwieldy

This whole article is very vague and some of the paragraphs seem to have no point. For instance, the third paragraph in the third section has nothing to do with genetic counselors. It simply discusses ethnicity-based genetic disorders. In keeping with the wikipedia philosophy, I'm going to delete it unless someone can come up with a reason to justify its existence. Also, the section titled prenatal testing is wrongly titled, as it deals with how genetic counseling can be given at any stage of life and seems superflous. Inaccurate or NPOV category

"Part of a series of articles on Discrimination" does not seem appropriate for this article. The addition of that category to the article was 01:32, 22 February 2008. The Family Planning article is not under that series for its possible links to eugenics. Even the Eugenics article does not have this series side bar series information. Definition of a Genetic Counselor / Counseling / Structure / References

"What is a genetic counsellor?" should have it's own section.

Re: section entitled "What do genetic counselors do?", first paragraph, first line: "A Genetic Counselor is a medical genetics expert with a master of science degree". This description appears be USA specific. A none-country specific description would appear to be more appropriate here.I suggest a more acceptable definition of what a genetic counselor is: "A genetic counselor is a person who provides genetic health information, advice and support to people with gene related medical issues and health concerns.". In the UK the website of the Association of Genetic Nurses and Counsellors (AGNC) describes [1] at length what is expected of a practitioner who wishes to register with their organization. To quote the AGNC: "The term 'genetic counsellor' has been adopted in the United Kingdom as the title for non-medical health professionals working in clinical settings, providing genetic counselling." In the UK a genetics counselor does not have to be medical genetics expert, although they do have to have teaching and counseling skills. In any case the actual training and accreditation requirements (if any) are likely to vary greatly by country / region. For example, in the UK Masters Degree certification is not a requirement in order to offer genetic counseling services. It is likely that in many countries with poorly developed health services people call themselves a "genetic counselor" without any kind of formal body accreditation or pre-qualification requirements.

Not to disregard what has been put up here, this whole article could do with a better structure - how about:

1 Genetic Counseling - the current summary is mostly OK, although it's worth adding that counseling is also for those who have already been diagnosed with a gene related "disorder".It might be preferable to use a reference to section 4 of the "Draft of recommendations for genetic counselling".[2] Even though this paper describes genetic counseling within the context of genetic testing, this is still a pretty good, though wordy, summary from an international perspective. There's much other pertinent information on this site.

2 Recipients of Genetic counseling - typical kinds of people / situations where genetic counseling is typically provided / offered / might be expected

3 Genetic Counselors - typicals: core skills, experience, what they do, where they work. This section could be expanded to cover some of the more controversial areas, where Genetic Counselors also act as advocates for special interest groups or individuals, charities etc.

4 History - I have little knowledge of this area, but it would be useful to put the preceding sections into some historical context.

Thoughts?

I've also removed the "Controversy" section since it was empty - it only contained links to other WP pages, some of which were themselves tagged as having POV issues. Genetic counselors as support and other sections about counseling

I really don't understand the Genetic counselors as support section. And I am a genetic counselor, so I cannot imagine it's helpful to anyone else either. Also, the only citation has nothing to do with genetic counselors providing support. I think this section and the attitudes towards counseling section need to be scrapped. The session structure section should be revised and put together with the psychotherapeutic section for one new Psychosocial Aspects of Genetic Counseling section. --Demonllamarachel (talk) 22:18, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any thoughts on creating a separate "Genetic Counselors" page?

Some of this page really addresses genetic counseling as a type of appointment, but other parts are really about genetic counselors as a profession. It's confusing because not all GCs provide patient-facing services, and there are plenty of providers who offer "genetic counseling" even though they are not certified GCs. I think it would be helpful to keep these page about the clinical process that is genetic counseling and create a separate page about genetic counselors, focusing on training, licensure, types of jobs, etc. --Demonllamarachel (talk) 22:24, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think there is merit in setting up a separate "genetic counseling" and "genetic counselor" pages as well. Similar to how plumbing and plumbers have separate pages. "Attitudes toward counseling" section

I think that there might be value in a section about attitudes toward genetic counseling but nothing in this section has any value. And the paper cited is specifically about attitudes toward genetic testing (not counseling) and is probably largely outdated anyway.
