New article

Hi all, I'm not a member of this WikiProject but I wanted to make you aware that I've started a new article on Legionella clemsonensis. Please feel free to contribute to it as you desire. I've already categorized it under this WikiProject. This bacterium was newly named this year. N. Jain talk to me 14:29, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Any responses to me should be addressed at my talk page. N. Jain talk to me 14:29, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

The WikiJournal of Medicine is a free, peer reviewed academic journal which aims to provide a new mechanism for ensuring the accuracy of Wikipedia's biomedical content. We started it as a way of bridging the Wikipedia-academia gap.[1] It is also part of a WikiJournal User Group with other WikiJournals under development.[2] The journal is still starting out and not yet well known, so we are advertising ourselves to WikiProjects that might be interested.

Engaging Wikipedians

  • Original articles on topics that don't yet have a Wikipedia page, or only a stub/start
  • Wikipedia articles that you are willing to see through external peer review (either solo or as in a group, process analogous to GA / FA review)
  • Image articles, based around an important medical image or summary diagram

Engaging non-Wikipedians

We hope that an academic journal format may also encourage non-Wikipedians to contribute who would otherwise not. Therefore, please consider:

  • Printing off the advertisement poster and distribute in tearooms & noticeboards at your place of work
  • Emailing around the pdf through contact networks or mailing lists (suggested wording)

If you want to know more, we recently published an editorial describing how the journal developed.[3] Alternatively, check out the journal's About or Discussion pages.

Additionally, the WikiJournal of Science is just starting up under a similar model and looking for contributors. Firstly it is seeking editors to guide submissions through external academic peer review and format accepted articles. It is also encouraging submission of articles in the same format as Wiki.J.Med. If you're interested, please come and discuss the project on the journal's talk page, or the general discussion page for the WikiJournal User group.

These are two very highly cited websites on Wikipedia according to WP:JCW, but they have no corresponding articles. I'm not saying they are necessarily notable, but some information should be available about this sources, like we have for www.uniprot.org or www.dsmz.de. Turns out List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (which is what is hosted at bacterio.net) already has a page. I had never noticed it before. Set up the web address as a redirect and will try to clean up that page. Ajpolino (talk) 23:07, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

The WikiJournal of Science is a start-up academic journal which aims to provide a new mechanism for ensuring the accuracy of Wikipedia's scientific content. It is part of a WikiJournal User Group that includes the flagship WikiJournal of Medicine.[1][2]. Like Wiki.J.Med, it intends to bridge the academia-Wikipedia gap by encouraging contributions by non-Wikipedians, and by putting content through peer review before integrating it into Wikipedia.

Since it is just starting out, it is looking for contributors in two main areas:

Editors

  • See submissions through external academic peer review
  • Format accepted articles
  • Promote the journal

Authors

  • Original articles on topics that don't yet have a Wikipedia page, or only a stub/start
  • Wikipedia articles that you are willing to see through external peer review (either solo or as in a group, process analagous to GA / FA review)
  • Image articles, based around an important medical image or summary diagram

If you're interested, please come and discuss the project on the journal's talk page, or the general discussion page for the WikiJournal User group.

Contributing to the Streptococcus pneumoniae page

I've got to edit an article about a specific bacteria, in my case S. pneumoniae for my Bio 495 class. Some ideas I have for contributing to the S. pneumoniae wikipedia page are adding some information about the history of S. pneumoniae from a reputable source, as well as information discovered by the researchers in a primary literature article (scholarly article/scientific study peer reviewed and accepted into a scientific journal) I summarized, primarily about the researchers findings on two new transcription factors that cause upregulation and downregulation in four genes that potentially cause the virulent pathogenesis of S. pneumoniae

When was penicillin first used to combat virulent strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae and by whom? John JohnCCWilliams (talk) 12:11, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

Answer: I found out that in the mid 1940's, Dr. Chester Keefer first tried treating patients with penicillin and achieved remarkable results, it was also the first treatment of a virulent bacteria in the United States via penicillin.

Thanks for your time

Merge proposal

Thoughts on this merge proposal (or other ideas on what to do with History of penicillin) would be much appreciated. Thanks! Ajpolino (talk) 04:52, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Extension of 'Topic Page' review articles from PLOS Computational Biology to PLOS Genetics

framelss
framelss

The journal group PLOS is extending its 'Topic Page' review format that was spearheaded by PLOS Computational Biology to also include PLOS Genetics. In this format, accepted articles are dual-published both in the journal, and as Wikipedia pages (see Wikipedia category).

Suitable topics must either currently lack a Wikipedia page, or have only stub/start class contents. If you you would like to submit such a review article, see these guidelines. If you have any recommendations for topics to be commissioned, feel free to let any of the involved editors know: T Shafee (PLOS Gen), D Mietchen (PLOS Comp Biol).

newbie question

I do not understand how these pages, for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Microbiology_equipment work.

I see some links to equipment used in microbiology, but I also lack a few. So how does this work? Are special moderators responsible to make these pages or how does it work?Garnhami (talk) 18:54, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Hello! Those pages are categories. As you suspected, they don't work like the other pages. Don't edit them. Instead a page can be added to a category by adding a category tag to it (this is described in some technical detail at the "categories" link above). For an example, go to Autoclave and scroll to the bottom. You should see along the horizontal bar at the bottom a list of the categories that "Autoclave" is in. If you click to edit the page and scroll to the bottom, you'll see the following:
[[Category:Laboratory equipment]]
[[Category:Medical equipment]]
[[Category:Medical hygiene]]
[[Category:Microbiology equipment]]
This is the code that adds the page to the category. You can add pages to categories as well by pasting the code of the category you want at the bottom of the page. Please read this first though, so that you don't end up butting heads with other editors out there. Good luck! Ajpolino (talk) 02:13, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Microbiology/Archive 12/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Microbiology.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Microbiology, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Myco- or Microbacterium iranicum

People here might notice, I'm undertaking a huge project to move articles to proper categories (literally hundreds).
There's an article here under the name Mycobacterium iranicum. After the title, everything else about the article suggests that that's a error--and it should be Microbacterium iranicum. Microbacterium is a large genus, and the category needs work.
I'd like to move the article, but I don't have the expertise I feel I should to make that decision. Would someone who knows what's what, please either move it or assure me that I've got it right? Thanks. Uporządnicki (talk) 15:13, 26 May 2017 (UTC)

The scientific references in the article all call it Mycobacterium iranicum; it's described as resembling Mycobacterium gilvum. So based on the sources given, the article title is correct and occurrences of Microbacterium in the text should be changed. Peter coxhead (talk) 16:33, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
And it's listed under Mycobacterium at bacterio.net, which is the most authoritative source for bacterial nomenclature. Plantdrew (talk) 16:52, 26 May 2017 (UTC)
@AzseicsoK:are you talking about this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mycobacterium_iranicum  ? If so, I really do not understand your problem

Acid fastness article needs some TLC

I am taking into microbiology now and so I stumbled across the article on acid-fastness today while prepping for an exam. It was a bit of a mess and included some info that I am 96% sure was either wrong or misplaced. I made some changed to the article, and added some notes to the talk page. It is currently not in this WikiProject, but I think it should probably be rolled in.

Given how basic the subject material is, I feel like it could do with some TLC from someone who knows a lot more microbiology than I do, as there is a good chance that lots of students are finding it early in their studies. It appears close to the top of Google's results for most searches on 'acid-fast'/'acid-fastness'.

A tag has been placed on Ralstoniaceae requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

A family Ralstoniaceae was never established and is scientifically not existing (see LPSN or NCBI Taxbrowser)

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, pages that meet certain criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. 138.232.79.226 (talk) 09:01, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

Please check out the Wiki page "Ralstoniaceae" and consider to support or reject the proposal of Speedy Deletion

Never mind. I see what you mean. Maybe better to merge it with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralstonia Some do speak of a family: https://books.google.be/books?id=p5nEDAAAQBAJ&pg=PA178&lpg=PA178&dq=Burkholderiaceae+vs+Ralstoniaceae&source=bl&ots=gsF0w8xv2D&sig=-UG9iqf8GX3yzIUOmTKQvyMMLB0&hl=nl&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwis8JqShdDXAhXHqxoKHQ4cAB8Q6AEIMjAC#v=onepage&q=Burkholderiaceae%20vs%20Ralstoniaceae&f=false Also Bergey's manual does it. So a bit strange. Garnhami (talk) 15:40, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

I think the case is already settled. --TAXONoMIST (talk) 07:13, 22 November 2017 (UTC)
