Someone didn't follow the instructions, and it's in the wrong section

Look at this:

changing user name

I want to change user name from Aarongordy to AaronGordy Thank you Aaron Gordy —Preceding unsigned comment added by Aarongordy (talkcontribs) 15:29, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

I have absolutely no idea how to fix this, and this also belongs in WP:CHU, because AaronGordy doesn't exist. I can't do it myself because the template used requests the editor's username. I don't want MY name changed to AaronGordy... Uber-Awesomeness  talk  20:14, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up. I've taken care of it. Useight (talk) 20:18, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Dead usernames (between ST47 and JarlaxleArtemis)

Effectively it appears some of the usernames are terminated since the block status says (account creation blocked, e-mail blocked, cannot edit own talk page). However, some of these usernames don't violate the policy, so is it possible to move the ST47'ed names to other "codes" that would normally violate as long and confusing? It's not like the JarlaxleArtemis vandals will be able to rebut again. After that, it would involve deleting the username so it can be freely recreated. For instance, Espers is not a username violation, but is tagged as a JarlaxleArtemis vandal. With electronics culture it's probably along the lines of a username like Mushroom. mechamind90 19:18, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

  • Well, if the old vandal account was moved in place of a constructive editor to an account like Espers, I'm not sure if brackets would work since it appears to convert to a percent sign followed by a number for me. "Esper followed by JA and then the number to indicate when it was created" would work, so good reminder.
  • According to an admin, some usernames get "globally locked and hidden", as may apply to my suggestion. And either way, account creation status for the blocked user would remain as is, presumably the automatic ACB/EB/Talk page disabled status. mechamind90 16:42, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
  • A good idea if it works would probably be to move JarlaxleArtemis tagged user accounts to proper name suffixed ones (like "Espers" to "Espers JAF2H". Almost nobody is going to think to create a user account with JAF2H at the end unless they know about that code. I hope usernames like Espers can eventually be claimed by true good faith Wikipedians. mechamind90 16:58, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

How to change back

I changed my username a few months ago but I don’t like it, how do I change it back? Shannontalk contribs 20:39, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

I wish to switch back to my old username. Last time my request simply got ignored. I want a definitive answer from a Wikipedia editor, not a bot, YES or NO. Please note that the username I am trying to usurp is my old username and does not belong to anyone. Shannontalk contribs 02:42, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
Shouting and demanding won't help. How do we know you won't change it again? We don't change usernames lightly. If your last request was ignored, how did it get changed ;-) RlevseTalk 03:04, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
I already requested to change it back twice. I promise I won't even try to change it again. :p Shannontalk contribs 15:04, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
How about a compromise: For the benefit of the Wikipedians at WP:CHU/U, I will never change my username again. Otherwise, you guys are risking the Wikipedia community the loss of another editor, which is me. I don’t mean to take drastic action or threaten. I am just really, really frustrated and annoyed, especially since the username I am trying to “usurp” is my own. Honestly, look at my contributions to the wiki. I have 12,400 edits on my part. And you refuse to change MY FREAKING USERNAME!!! I think I have mentioned about 5 times that I WILL NOT CHANGE IT AGAIN. If I do want to, I will simply make a new account, but that’s not going to happen. If we get this over with you’ll never see my username on CHU/U ever again. Shannontalk contribs 20:41, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

The general policy at Wikipedia was, historically, that user names are permanent. That posed problems because there were cases where someone new to Wikipedia would choose a username poorly. Either it revealed personal information, or implied a conflict of interest, or was confusing. So, we started allowing user name changes in some cases. And while there has never been a written policy on what changes are allowed and disallowed, both because of community considerations and workload we don't want to encourage trivial requests. Over time standards have become more liberal but having people change usernames frequently is something we specifically want to avoid. It confuses people and makes this look like a silly game. If there is some specific reason you can articulate for the previous change and the new one, other than a whim of fancy, that's another matter, but such an explanation has not been forthcoming thus far.

The Uninvited Co., Inc. 18:05, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

The username I chose first when I joined Wikipedia was totally on a whim. I then changed my username and I liked it, and so it stayed for several months. I WAS NOT intending to change it afterwaerds, everything went well, I liked the username Shannon1, it was just fine., I was trying to change the username of one of my alternate accounts, Silver Penguin, but then everything somehow got all messed up, so I ended up accidentally naming my alternate, then I tried to change it to a name I liked better, but then a week later I realized with horror that I had changed the name of THIS account instead, etc. Shannontalk contribs 19:29, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
So what's the take? Is it possible or not? If yes then I will never be seen on CHU/U again (as I already mentioned above). If not then I have yet to decide what course of action I shall take. Shannontalk contribs 23:23, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Well, let's see.

  1. You started out as User:Themaeeandhisfriend
  2. On May 13, 2009 your rename request to User:Shannon was turned down on SUL grounds by Dweller and Kingturtle.
  3. On May 21, 2009 a rename was performed at your request to User:Shannon1
  4. On February 13, 2010 you requested a rename to User:Shannonchan, which was granted.
  5. Now you want to be Shannon1 again.

I think that this is exactly the sort of confusing repeated changes that we, as "bureaucrats," are supposed to stop. The Uninvited Co., Inc. 22:55, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Well, the list is sworn not to continue. Shannontalk contribs 01:41, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
And secondly, I only chose the rename for Shannon1 because although the account Shannon does not exist on the English wikipedia, it does on the German, so I had to find an alternate. Those two are part of the same username change. And I've been trying to rid my name of the "1" ever since, but never have I found a likable solution. Shannontalk contribs 17:24, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Just change your sig to reflect how you want your username to appear. This regular name changing needs to stop, and it's stopping here. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 20:15, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
The problem comes out when you guys don't realize that it will stop, but after the change. I believe that I've devoted a lot of time and effort to help make Wikipedia a better place, at least in the geography section. Now if you allow me to change my username BACK, I will not bother you again. Shannontalk contribs 20:43, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
And besides, my username already reads exactly how I wanted it to be, even before I changed it to Shannon1. Shannontalk contribs 22:09, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Renaming is a courtesy service provided to contributors. With all the content Shannon has written for the project, I don't think it's our place to tell them they can't be renamed once more if that's what they want. –Juliancolton | Talk 02:26, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
I tend to agree. 1 FA and 6 GA's shows that this user isn't the type to be here, play games, mess around in userspace and waste everyones time. I could understand rejecting a third rename for someone who has barely any mainspace contributions and with a history of fart-arseing around in userspace, but Shannon has contributed high-quality content to the encyclopedia and hasn't been a userspace-lurker. Daniel (talk) 02:36, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words and your understanding. But even so, is it still possible to change it back? Do I have to make a special request or is it just not possible given I have a large amount of subpages? Shannontalk contribs 20:53, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
As Julian says, they are a courtesy service, which means they aren't required. It also means that shouting and expecting people to jump to it to satisfy one's whims probably isn't a good plan. I'm generally of the opinion that username changes should be restricted to those that are supported by a relatively small set of more important reasons. The project should in general spend it's resources on it's most important aspects (articles and those things most closely related to them), and not tie them up on distantly related items like this. That said, if some bureaucrat comes by that is willing to do this change, it won't bother me, but I would suggest Shannon accept it if no one is willing to do so and leave it at that. - Taxman Talk 21:01, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
Taxman, I'm honestly at a loss here. Could you please explain the collective hesitance here to preform the rename? It's not a server issue, and Special:RenameUser is cheap to fill out. Respectfully, –Juliancolton | Talk 00:04, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
The principle at work is that username changes confuse the community, and repeat username changes confuse the community excessively. I agree that server performance is no longer a problem and filling out the form never has been. There are many places on the Internet where people are tacitly encouraged to change their username often as a form of expression. There are also many places where username changes are restricted or disallowed completely. We're in the second group. The Uninvited Co., Inc. 01:56, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
However, as I stated a long time ago, the purpose of the username change is to avoid confusion because I trust that most Wikipedians who know of me know me as Shannon1. Shannontalk contribs 03:03, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
I guess it's not up to me, but personally I feel that with as much trouble Wikipedia is having retaining active content contributors, the least we can do is fulfill Shannon's request after all the work they've done for the project. For what it's worth, under similar circumstances, I'd happily preform this rename at Commons or Simple, where I'm a bureaucrat. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:22, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
I performed the usurpation request per this comment. She had inadvertently changed the wrong username. Allowing for changing back, but if a request comes up again, it will be denied. You may need to move user subpages. I have renamed User:Shannon1 to User:Shannon1 (usurped2) and then renamed User:Shannonchan to User:Shannon1. Let me know if there are any problems. Useight (talk) 16:02, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks so much for changing it back. But it seems that now there are a lot of things mixed up across the namespaces of Shannon1, Shannonchan and Shannon1 (usurped2). I can't find some of my things, and the contributions still show only for Shannonchan. Shannonchan (talk) 16:48, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
We've got a lot of double redirects to straighten out. All of the subpages are under User:Shannon1 (usurped2) and need to be moved to User:Shannon1's prefix. This will take me a bit of time. Useight (talk) 17:03, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
I've started to help with the effort; I marked for deletion about 10 of my un-used subpages yesterday; the rest I will start to move. However, what's up with the user contributions? Shannonchan (talk) 17:35, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm working on the moves, getting close. I have to head to the store now and get the weekly groceries, so I'll finish whatever's left when I get back. I'll also look at the contribution problem then. Useight (talk) 18:02, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Okay, it might be all sorted out now. Useight (talk) 20:27, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Whoops, it seems that my talk page is still under the Shannonchan name and my watchlist is completely gone. And also, my contributions are not visible under either Shannonchan or Shannon1, though at Special:Contributions the edits are under Shannonchan, and in the Preferences of both accounts the edit count is not visible. Shannon1 (talk) 22:48, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

(outdent) Talk page is now moved to User talk:Shannon1. You should be able to log into each account, find the one with the watchlist, and copy it over. Useight (talk) 22:51, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

But I can't find the watchlist on either account, and the contributions are still on Shannonchan. Is it as it says on the CHU/U main page, edits will take a few days to move? Shannon1 (talk) 00:37, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Also check User:Shannon1 (usurped), User:Shannon1 (usurped2), and User:Shannon1 (usurped3) for the watchlist. As for the contribs, I've tried twice to move them from User:Shannonchan to User:Shannon1, but it appears that it's not working very well. Sometimes it does take some time to move them all, but usually it at least starts almost immediatedly. Useight (talk) 02:04, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Aha! Found it on usurped3. Thanks a bunch for helping me on this REALLY awkward part of my Wikipedia days. Now just to wait for the contribs to complete moving. Shannontalk contribs 02:12, 11 April 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shannon1 (talkcontribs)
Remember to change your signature to point to your current userpage. Jafeluv (talk) 11:07, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Just to let you know, your contributions may never fully move over properly. Sometimes they simply don't. That part of the username system is a little brittle. And to answer Julian's question about where the collective hesitance was coming from I would point to this case as an excellent example of how resources were directed away from more productive activities. We certainly value your contributions Shannon, but it would be much better for the project if the general expectation was that usernames were fixed in most cases and no one felt that their continuance in the project hinged on getting the new username they feel they need. - Taxman Talk 12:22, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Usurping Blocked Account

Is it possible to Usurp an account that has recorded edits, even though the account is indefinitely blocked (for "SOAP" and with a check-user case too!)? Or is it impossible due to the "0 edits" requirement? 64.191.211.55 (talk) 18:47, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

It depends on if the edits are cc-by-sa/GFDL-significant. Example? –xenotalk 18:48, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
What's the threshold for "significant"? Does it matter if this is for SUL-consolodation (which it is)? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.191.211.55 (talkcontribs) 18:54, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
Significant would mean some of their contributions are still live today; e.g. they created a new article which still exists. I can take a look if you tell me the username. As I understand, bureaucrats will be more lenient when it is for SUL considerations. –xenotalk 19:35, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Doppelgänger usurp Fae

Resolved

I have checked up on the SUL status of Fae (talk · contribs) and there are no edits made in any language. Could I usurp this account as a legitimate sock for the obvious Doppelgänger reasons? The normal request process would move my account and I want to keep my current name instead. Thanks  (talk · contribs) 09:22, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

As far as I know, yes- but filing a request the normal way and making it clear what you want to do (i.e. rename the existing Fae, and then create a new account with that name), will get you there much faster. Regards, {{Sonia|talk|simple}} 10:50, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I've put in a request. Hopefully someone will be able to sort it out without leaving me as Fae instead of Fæ! Fæ (talk) 11:43, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

Usurped userpages still redirecting to "User:Username (usurped)"

I recently came across User:Seha, who usurped the name on 2 August 2008. However, being relatively new to en.wiki, they did not actually un-redirect their User: and User talk: pages, so his userpage redirects to User:Seha (usurped) and his talk page to User talk:Seha (usurped). So anyone leaving a message for him will not activate the "You have new messages" notice, and he's also re-decorated User:Seha (usurped) as his own userpage. Now, I can fairly easily fix that for him, but I have to ask: is this something that the software should be taking care of automagically? Is it something the bureaucrat was supposed to do, but missed? Is it something the clerks here are supposed to do, but missed? Is it just assumed that the user will figure it out? Have I asked too many questions yet? (I already know the answer to the last one.)--Aervanath (talk) 17:09, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Is it just assumed that the user will figure it out? this is probably the most likely answer. Users who are usurping names are probably assumed to have some general wiki know-how. –xeno (talk) 17:33, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
Ah, so this is the exception to the rule. I'll go fix it for him, then.--Aervanath (talk) 18:26, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

No way to get around account age?

There is a defunct user name that I would really like (and pretty much the only way I'd want to register on Wikipedia) but I haven't got an account that I could rename to it as I edit consistently from my IP address. Without giving out the name explicitly, is there no way whatsoever that I could simply register a new account AND request usurpation? That is, are exceptions ever made? The target name's last edits were over 2.5 years ago and number less than 30. If someone could notify me of replies on my talk page it would be most appreciated. Thanks! 142.68.80.29 (talk) 01:02, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Can't hurt to try. It really depends on the nature of the edits. –xenotalk 01:13, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Well, that's just the thing, the privacy of the IP and assuming a user name don't go hand in hand and simply registering a name just to change it doesn't provide for a record of the nature of edits. Do you think still it might not be an issue? 142.68.80.29 (talk) 14:58, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Sorry for the very late reply. Whether or not you can take over the name depends on the nature of the edits made by that name. Without you saying what the name is, I can't really lend any insight. –xenotalk 14:53, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Ridiculous instruction

I wonder why people need to have a user account if they want to request an usurpation (instruction #1: Log in to your present account.). If they want to usurp an account to fit it into their SUL they usually *don't* have another account and it's not really useful to create an account just to request that usurpation, is it? ;) --Thogo (Talk) 17:37, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Changing_username/SUL#Partial_usurpation. WJBscribe (talk) 21:21, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

User:Julie

Hello, I was checking the account User:Julie and noticed there were a couple of edits, but I wasn't sure if they were GFDL-significant. I'm assuming they are significant, and no usurpation is possible? Thanks, JulieSpaulding (talk) 13:52, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply. This is a moot point, as there is a user (es.wiki bureaucrat) that holds the global account already: [2], so we cannot grant you this name here. –xenotalk 15:01, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Unclear instructions

At Wikipedia:Help desk#Account Merge Failure there is presently a query complicated by the opaque wording at WP:CHUU. Does the criteria for an established account pertain equally to established users on other mw wikis or just those on :en:? In this case the user is established on de: but only has an IP on :en:, because the non-editing account on :en: has stopped him from registering here. Is it necessary for him to first create an :en: account under another name to procede with usurpation, or can a stable IP do it? LeadSongDog come howl 20:32, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

ty for asking here LeadSongDog, i just have to say that i don't have a stable IP even. But if still possible without creating a new account for Usurpation it'll be great, greetings de:Benutzer:Angan--91.8.1.128 (talk) 07:42, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
In that case, I tweaked your sig to link to your de userpage. Unstable ip is kind of a non-starter, not least because it makes it nearly impossible to hold a discussion with you. I'd suggest you register something transparently connected, such as en:user:DeAngan and note your intention on that userpage, then apply for usurpation. Good luck.LeadSongDog come howl! 18:42, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it's possible without a stable IP even. The old account has to be renamed, then SUL will just automatically create a new account here. No one else can create that account but him since it's now reserved as part of SUL. {{Sonia|talk|simple}} 11:24, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
Are you sure about that, Sonia? Please see the discussion below at #SUL_request:_vacate_username_vs._change_temporary_username_into_requested_name. Thanks!   — Jeff G. ツ 15:15, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Technical problems

In my attempt to usurp the name "Eponymous" as it's been one of my primary online handles for many years, and the current user hasn't done anything with it since 2004, I noticed something strange -- there's another usurpation form filed immediately below mine, tagged w/my ID as if I posted it, with what appears to be a live "change user" button. Is this a glitch, or have I stumbled into L-Space, or am I inadvertantly stepping on someone else's usurp? Thanks, Fliponymous (talk) 19:05, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Now the name has changed. I fear I may have broken Wikipedia. Apologies, Fliponymous (talk) 19:45, 1 June 2010 (UTC) who desires only to become Eponymous

My original request was commented out by User:Fail for technical issues, I assume it's related to the above problem. Now when I tried to re-post my request as suggested by Fail, it was automatically commented out. So the result seems to be a)the note by user:juliancolton regarding the lack of GFDL-significance of the defunct User:Eponymous is hanging below someone else's request where it's irrelevant, and B)I am unable to retry. I'm dreadfully sorry as I feel like I'm causing arse-pain here when all I want to do is change my name. Does anyone know what's going on with the process? Thanks, Fliponymous (talk) 14:09, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

I've noticed these strange malformed requests an awful lot. I'll try to investigate. –xenotalk 14:13, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
I've made your request live again, I'm going to have take a closer look at the way the usurp template is laid out before I can fix. –xenotalk 14:37, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
Thank you kindly! Fliponymous (talk) 14:39, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
xeno, you wrote "what is with this hidden cmt stuff" in your Edit Summary for this edit. I created the hidden comments as a failed attempt at streamlining the process of transferring errant CHUU requests to CHUS; I have just removed them from Template:Usurp in this edit, and I apologize for the confusion they caused.   — Jeff G. ツ 15:03, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
Ahh! Now I get it. Thanks for explaining. While the idea behind it is sound, when people remove the hidden cmt markers it tends to mess things up =) –xenotalk 16:20, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

SUL request: vacate username vs. change temporary username into requested name

For SUL purposes, some other wikis will accept a request from an IP (verified by edit at the home wiki) and simply 'vacate' the desired username - rather than requiring a temporary account be created. In this regard, the local account can be created automatically after it is vacated. Is there a particular reason we don't do this? –xenotalk 16:29, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

If there is a particular reason, I'd like to know too. In trying to fix my messy SUL I've come across both, and I have to say it's easier on both parties to just rename the target account and let SUL recreate it- only one rename to be done, and no manual unifying needed. {{Sonia|ping|enlist}} 02:16, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
Actually, it seems there is no reason; we used to do this at the old /SUL page [3] and it just seems we haven't properly imported the instructions when we merged it to /Simple and /Usurp. –xenotalk 14:59, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
If the desired username is vacated, is it possible that anyone noticing that action can create an account with the desired username, not just the intended recipient? I know we have rules against that at WP:ACC/Guide#Perfect_match, but is there a technical means to prevent it?   — Jeff G. ツ 15:11, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
Good question. I'm not quite sure, I thought they would be prevented by the software. –xenotalk 16:21, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
Indeed they are. –xenotalk 16:27, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

The requested username is already taken in the unified login system. Please choose a different name.

In that case, I would favor restoration of the "Partial usurpation" instructions.   — Jeff G. ツ 18:07, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
Tend to agree. –xenotalk 18:10, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
The verification keeps random IP Addresses from messing with the contributions of non-mainspace contributions of certain six-months-inactive users with unattached accounts.   — Jeff G. ツ 18:07, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
Good point. But in cases of long-dormant accounts without contribs, I probably won't be demanding verification (though it doesn't hurt). –xenotalk 18:10, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Problems with Unified Log in

Hey, I don't know where to report this so I'm adding it here. I have an account with username "doson" please check it below:

The accounts named "Doson" on each of the following sites have been automatically attached to the unified account:

  1. commons.wikimedia.org
  2. de.wikipedia.org
  3. en.wikipedia.org
  4. en.wikibooks.org
  5. en.wikinews.org
  6. en.wikiquote.org
  7. en.wiktionary.org
  8. www.mediawiki.org
  9. meta.wikimedia.org
  10. ru.wikipedia.org

The account "Doson" could not be automatically confirmed as belonging to you on the following sites; most likely they have a different password from your primary account:

  1. zh.wikipedia.org

There is a clash with username "doson" & this is the reason why I can't merge all my accounts. And I didn't create my account in "zh.wikipedia.org" & it's not mine. Is there anyway I can merge my accounts by excluding that "zh.wikipedia.org" OR can I seize that zh.wikipedia.org account. If so how can I do it.

Thanks

Active accounts on other wikis that don't have SUL

The page is unclear on this matter, so I was wondering if someone could help me. Let's say an account exists here, but it has no edits. It also exists on, for example, the German Wikipedia, but that account is very active. If no SUL existed, can the account name on this wiki be usurped? SwarmTalk 00:11, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

No, as the German Wikipedia user has a prior claim to the SUL, even if they have not yet exercised it. Creating new conflicts for the SUL process would be a bit counterproductive. WJBscribe (talk) 12:21, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

I changed my username here a long while back... causing 12548 of my 14723 edits to go missing to User:Shannon1 (usurped3). Can someone somehow move the edits onto my account? Shannontalk contribs 22:26, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

This is one of the reasons several bureaucrats advised against the back-and-forth at the time. You'll probably need to make a post to bugzilla:17313 to flag a developer. Though I only see 3 edits at Special:Contributions/Shannon1 (usurped3). –xenotalk 12:58, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
I see... how do I open a discussion there though? I'm a bit confused... :P Shannontalk contribs 05:52, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
Just register an account on bugzilla and post a new comment on that bug report (or file a new one). For some reason I only see three contributions on that account but popups is reporting 12548. Very peculiar. –xenotalk 14:07, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I have a SUL at my home wiki (de) with the name Imzadi. In this wiki another user Imzadi already exists. There are four edits in February 2006. Is it possible to get the account anyhow? --194.39.218.10 (talk) 18:02, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes, just submit an SUL-only request on the project page, following the instructions. demize (t · c) 15:06, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

While the decision is pending for Maliwi, I have created the temporary username Marcus-l-williams. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marcus-l-williams (talkcontribs) 22:58, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Laxer deadlines

Hello. I've been quite inactive for a while now, although I've tried to glance at bureaucrat-related pages from time to time. I've noticed that bureaucrats have become less adherent to the 7-day waiting period that used to be rigidly in force. In particular, the subtext for the date headers has changed to "...on or before...", whereas I'm sure it used to be "...no sooner than..." Was some discussion held in support of this change? —Anonymous DissidentTalk 01:45, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

As far as I know the position is still that we should give the target account 7 days to object to non-SUL usurpations. It was always the practice to process SUL requests straightaway - now the boards have merged we have some requests that need to wait and others that don't. WJBscribe (talk) 01:09, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
I've been, at times, processing regular usurp requests (i.e. not for SUL) sooner than 7 days if the target account never did anything and has been dormant for upwards of several years, and the requester is an established user. On the other hand, I've not been processing SUL requests _instantly_, but usually after a few days. The wording was changed from something quite strict ("no earlier than") to the present wording in order to reflect this. Since I'm the only one who regularly acts on requests here (not a gripe - just an observation), it wasn't discussed. –xenotalk 01:14, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
Well 7 days was just the figure chosen by Dan when usurp got up and running because we thought there should be some opportunity to object - as I recall, Essjay had intended a 4 week waiting period. Generally I doubt it makes much difference, although I do recall an account that had no edits but started editing on day 6 and objected to the usurpation. I think that was back when Secretlondon or Cecropia were doing most of the renames though, so not exactly a regular event :). WJBscribe (talk) 13:40, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Simple English

Is there a way to usurp usernames in Simple English Wikipedia? I want to make edits there with my new username... Ekin (talk) 14:29, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Try simple:WP:USURP. –xenotalk 15:18, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Possibility of merging different usernames.

Hello. I have an username on Turkish Wikipedia, it is LuCkY and it has been changed from LuCkYGenTr by a Turkish bureaucrat last month. I want to use the username LuCkY on English Wikipedia but it is already using by someone else, so I can not use it. I see there is another username taken by someone else. It is Lucky and has no edits. Can I take this username and then is it possible to merge it to my home wiki (Lucky and LuCkY)? Uppercase or lowercase do not matter for me. Usurping a Commons username

Hello there. I have usurped this user name a few months ago from a hu.wiki user. I tried to upload a file but I have found out that this username is already in use on Wiki Commons by that very same hu.wiki user. Now that I already have usurped that hu.wiki username, can I usurp the Commons username as well? I consider myself an active editor of the community and found out that Commons user has five uploads, all in one day in 2009, and has been inactive since then. Is this possible? — Ekin(talk·@) 13:00, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

You'd have to ask at Commons, not here. Commons:Changing username/Usurp requests would be a good place to start. Anomie 18:51, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
Thank you very much. What about Simple Wikipedia usurpation requests? I could not find a page for that... — Ekin(talk·@) 07:38, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

"usrped" in the userpage heading

I've recently userped the username Wittylama (which I created years ago to redirect to my then username of Witty Lama). Now in my userpage in the heading is the word "(userped)". Will this stay there forever? Witty Lama 06:05, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Fixed. Feezo (send a signal | watch the sky) 06:24, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Non-existent WP:USURP pages

I can't find the WP:USURP pages for these Wikipedias. Any ideas? — Ekin(talk·@) 12:22, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Sorted, see User talk:Xeno/Archive 26#Non-existent WP:USURP pages. –xenotalk 14:25, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
