Discussion re: directing users to m:SRUC

Thread retitled from "Re. WP:CHU/U: Brianhe → Bri".

I remember there was a discussion about this page after SUL finalisation and the usage of m:SRUC to handle usurpation requests, but I cannot remember where the discussion has been archived to or what it was called. Anyways, I've moved a discussion from WP:CHU/U onto this page to reduce clutter and make discussion easier. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 12:52, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

Discussion moved from WP:CHU/U

@WJBscribe: Please do handle these requests through meta. The account was not active on en.wiki, and should only have been usurped following the globally established procedure. It's impossible for every project to impose their own usurpation policy on accounts on other wiki's. Savh tell me 22:03, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

My understanding was that this rename fell within the remit of this board. If that's not the case, I apologise. That said, I'm not sure I understand why we still keep this noticeboard if uncontroversial usurpations cannot be handled here. Should we deprecate this board and send all usurpation requests to m:SRUC? WJBscribe (talk) 22:12, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
Usurpations concerning accounts created on en.wiki can be handled here according to the previously existing local usurpation policies, as they could be before. Usurpations concerning accounts created on it.wiki could never be performed from this noticeboard, and should not be either currently. Savh tell me 22:19, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
Technically, this rename would have been processed here prior to SUL unification. Bri@itwiki would not have been a global account, so Brianhe@enwiki could have been renamed to Bri@enwiki, and gained the claim to the global name when SUL unification took place, with the same result. But I see your point that actually renaming the @itwiki account takes it a step further and that, for usurpation here, you ask us to confine ourselves to targets with enwiki as their home wiki and no significant contributions to other projects. I will reflect on whether the volume of such requests makes keeping this noticeboard meaningful. I think it may just be adding confusion and we would be better sending all enwiki usurpation request to m:SRUC. @Xeno: what do you think, is it work keeping WP:CHUU? WJBscribe (talk) 22:33, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
@WJBscribe: I'm of the opinion that CHUU should remain open until there is an actual global usurpation policy, and remain open if that policy is more restrictive than the guidelines used here. If we turn it over to SRUC, a wide array of desirable usernames could be forever locked away. –xenotalk 00:11, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
That's a fair point. Do you know if any progress is being made on a global usurpation policy? It's been a couple of years since SUL unification and I can't see anywhere on meta where it is being actively discussed. WJBscribe (talk) 10:18, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
There is a sort of inactive discussion on meta but it's rather difficult to come to some sort of consensus when it involves multiple communities using currently different operating procedures, so the status quo has remained in place for a while now. Finding a proposal that suits everyone is rather difficult, and your help or input would certainly be appreciated. Savh tell me 11:34, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

Sure, I'll take a look. Having been involved in the evolving policy here, my suggestion would be to take it in stages. Let's start by seeing if we can agree a policy - even if it's limited - that's fairly uncontroversial and seek to expand it as we go. A good first step might be to collate in one place the usurpation policies of every wiki that has one, with a view to finding common ground. Are there any wikis that do not allow usurpation at all? WJBscribe (talk) 12:00, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

The German Wikipedia's usurpation policy was very restrictive, if I recall correctly, any edit made usurpation ineligible. –xenotalk 13:20, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
Another thing that's probably worth discussion is: "What constitutes a 'significant' edit that precludes renaming?" There seems to be vagueness around this statement. Minor typo fixing edits may be "insignificant", but they're still valid edits. What about copyediting? How much of the article must an edit change before it can preclude usurpation? What if they make multiple edits? It's a no-brainer if the account has made zero edits, or had all of its edits immediately reverted or deleted, but as it stands now it would seem that the interpretation of whether or not the edits of an account are insignificant enough to allow for usurpation is at the discretion of the renamer that happens upon the request. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 16:34, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
Usurpation, in my experience as a 'crat on es.wiki, was an absurd process, and usually done on a case by case basis or bluntly following some established principles that were never reconsidered - it was a matter mostly in hands of bureaucrats. Commons, if I'm not mistaken, for instance required the owner of the SUL account to have usurped all other local accounts before the usurpation on commons would be handled – if any other wiki decided to mirror that criterion and you'd need to usurp an account on both commons and that other project, you could forget the usurpation. This is no longer relevant since all accounts are global ones, but it imo shows the absurdity of certain local procedures towards usurpation. One of the things I particularly like of this wiki's process is that it requires the requesting user to have a certain standing before it takes over an account, and that for instance should imo be a part of a global policy, if we ever get one. I don't think usurpations require much haste either, and I'm rather fond of the notification & month on hold process we're currently using on meta as well. I personally believe there are millions of combinations possible, and usurpations should be rather restricted, but I'm aware most people think differently.
I haven't read the full discussion on meta yet, though skimming over it it seems to be oriented at setting hard requirements - and that generally isn't liked. I'd like to echo Ajraddatz's suggestion to find a compromise somewhere, possibly in the continuation of that discussion. Savh tell me 17:04, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
To me usurpations are an editor attraction and retention issue: if it makes editors happier to have a certain username, it's more likely they will contribute more and for a longer period of time. Of course keep in mind enwiki being the largest and oldest project has so many usernames that were registered and never used, this is why I am very hesitant to shutter the local venue given the more stringent requirements being floated for the global process. –xenotalk 14:05, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Different usernames in different Wikipedias?

Just wondering if it would be possible to e.g. use a Cyrillic transliteration of my username on the Russian Wikipedia should I ever get good enough at Russian to make edits there. Excalibre (talk) 12:51, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

@Excalibre: Sorry, that is not possible. Your username is global, meaning that it is the same across all Wikimedia projects. It's not possible to have one username on one wiki and a different username on another on the same account; to do that, you need to have two different accounts. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 14:00, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

Should global renamers/stewards be authorized to process requests at WP:CHUU?

Resolved
 – Proposal carries and the relevant process page has been updated to reflect the consensus: global renamers (including Stewards) familiar with local usurpation guidelines, can consider and carry out requests at WP:CHUU. –xenotalk 22:00, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

Currently only local bureaucrats are authorized to process requests at WP:CHUU; I propose to allow global renamers and stewards familiar with our usurpation policy be allowed to carry out requests there also. Some of them already do so, this would just mean the bot would respond to their names and the top information would be modified. –xenotalk 16:46, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

@Xeno: is there really any reason we even still need a project-local request page - assuming non-enwiki volunteers can do usurps, what are we really asking to be done here? — xaosflux Talk 16:57, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
Still no global usurp policy in place, usurps on meta can be more strict than our project generally tolerated for usurpation of usernames (enwiki has largest usage of usernames, many were registered and never used; same argument as above basically: Wikipedia_talk:Changing_username/Archive_5#Discussion_re:_directing_users_to_m:SRUC). –xenotalk 17:02, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
(edit conflict × 2) Global renamers can already process them as usernames are handled at the global level, not on individual wikis. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 17:03, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
Yes, the practical upshot is that we are authorizing actions that are already occuring from time-to-time so that the bot will recognize those names and process the requests properly. Edits like this won't be required. –xenotalk 17:04, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

Support Is there actually a reason why these outdated rules authorizing only bureaucrats to process requests on that page are still in place now that renames have been global for quite a while now and that m:SRUC, where global renamers and stewards can process usurpations at, has been humming along quite nicely? Considering that waiting for bureaucrat response can be inconvenient for everyone, it would be much easier if other renamers and stewards can process requests there. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 19:44, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

The only reason is that (until now) no one has proposed otherwise. –xenotalk 10:32, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Deciding - If I'm reading this right, there still seems to be a difference between local "usurp" policies and the global rename policy - and we are OK with someone who is a enwiki crat, + a renamer doing this action, but not not any random renamer right now - but the proposal is to allow any random renamer to usurp enwiki accounts requested on this page? I think I'd be OK with this increasing to enwiki admin+rename, as well as stewards; but not any renamer. — xaosflux Talk 23:36, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

You've described the situation correctly. Restricting it to local admins, crats + stewards would probably cover most of the people who do or are qualified to do work on that page (ks0stm, k6ka, etc.). –xenotalk 10:32, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: I know the line has to be drawn somewhere, but as a global renamer and an active member of enwiki, I feel excluded in your proposal. I usually help at WP:CHUS. But being excluded from WP:CHUU does not feel right. I wrote 150+ articles, including 3 good articles, and have 10.000+ edits on the English Wikipedia. I help as filemover, reviewer, rollbacker, templateeditor. The global community says I can be trusted as global renamer. Yet my own project (which was one of my home wikis when I was a steward) would be excluding me. I do not mind that admin, crat and steward are automatically approved. But please do not automatically disqualify others. All we want extra is that people are familiar with English guidelines. If someone can prove they are familiar with Wikipedia guidelines, that should be enough. People other than admins can sometimes also be trusted. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 11:11, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
Repinging Xaosflux since Taketa's ping didn't work. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 11:26, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
@Taketa:, personally - I think this all needs to go to meta: - barring that my point is that if we are going to have a special enwiki process it should be attended to by those (such as you) who are actually part of the enwiki community. Perhaps (extendedconfirmed+global_renamer)? — xaosflux Talk 14:24, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
Extendedconfirmed seems fair enough, assuming that global renamers who frequent enwiki long enough to be familiar with at least some of its internal processes should also be extendedconfirmed as well. (Do keep in mind that I became global renamer long before I became admin) —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 23:47, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
Can't the bot just be updated to see if someone has the "global-renamer" right on Meta? ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:57, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
@Nihonjoe: Certainly, but this discussion is about whether or not non-crat renamers are permitted to process requests on that page. Right now only local enwiki crats who are also global renamers are authorized to process requests there. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 00:01, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
@K6ka: Not according to what Xeno originally wrote, including "this would just mean the bot would respond to their names and the top information would be modified". Since enwiki already has no real (or direct) say in renaming, this is merely to "approve" what's already happening, and then modifying the bot so it recognizes anyone who can process rename requests and doesn't require an enwiki crat to post saying it's okay. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 00:10, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Support If I understand this correctly meta has stricter rules compared to enWiki. Then any meta rename is covered by our rules. The only discrepancy occurs when there is a request here that would be against meta rules, but only affects another user here. Then global renamers should be allowed to use our rules or leave those request to our buerocracy. Agathoclea (talk) 09:24, 29 June 2017 (UTC)

  • Agathoclea sums it up perfectly, and I think at this point the proposal carries. One thing I noticed is we don't have any obvious "Handling instructions", I wonder if k6ka would like to handle that? (Repurpose the clerks information essentially.) –xenotalk 01:37, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
I think all of Wikipedia:Changing username/Assistance could use some updating, both on the WP:CHUU part and on the WP:CHUS part. Some new "clerk note" templates could be added, and some could be removed as well (Or at least moved so that they don't appear on both pages. For example, m:Global renamers/FAQ says that user accounts with few or no other edits can be renamed without problems, so that's not a template that needs to be used on WP:CHUS any longer; however, it's definitely useful on WP:CHUU). Granted, I do have a summer job so my activity here might be limited; I'll happily take any further suggestions though. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 01:47, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
  • Xeno, I would like to notify the stewards at their Meta-wiki noticeboard about this RfC. Is that okay? --George Ho (talk) 02:28, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
@George Ho: that sounds fine. –xenotalk 12:27, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
Done. --George Ho (talk) 15:54, 3 July 2017 (UTC)
  • Support anyone with global renamer (including stewards) being able to handle requests anyway. They have the buttons to do it anyway, and really there's nothing stopping them from doing so (since they may not even know that they can't). I honestly can't see a reason to stop someone from helping out when they've already been granted the permission to do the job. Thanks for proposing this Xeno. Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 04:59, 8 July 2017 (UTC)
  • Support, Same reason with k6ka 🍁, though xaoxflux comment... Kinda weird, doesn't this means you guys going to add Global Renamer flags on en.wp admins? The only probability for them to get the bits are either they have extraordinarily large experience being a clerk on rename request or when they have expertise on many language and have robust Xwiki experience. Which I dare say most en.wp admins don't have. I do need to remind you, most renamer are not "random" most of these people are polyglot, they detect erroneous name in many different languages, they also have Xwiki experiences so they know which name is not okay in some wiki. I have to ask, do en.wp admins have these abilities?--AldNonUcallin?☎ 21:46, 8 July 2017 (UTC)
@Aldnonymous: I was not suggesting that. This is a "global renaming" that basically enwiki is carving out special procedures for; I am not suggesting that local admins all become global renamers - but that existing global renamers that want to function under enwiki's community process should be affiliated with enwiki already - not just any random global renamer. — xaosflux Talk 00:45, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

Xeno, this looks like a "clear consensus to support" the change. Shall we notify the stewards and global renamers about this, or what else shall we do? --George Ho (talk) 21:33, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

I've updated the process page, I'm not sure if any formal notification is required - most of the parties who are most likely to help out have already attended at this RFC. Also, there is really not much traffic to the page anymore. –xenotalk 22:00, 13 July 2017 (UTC)

Maximum number of edits

It runs in my mind that users can't be renamed once they pass a certain number of edits. Is this true, and if so, what's the maximum? If it's true, we ought to mention it somewhere on this page. Nyttend (talk) 00:43, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

There's no maximum number of edits I think, but we generally discourage renaming of bot accounts with very high number of edits unless it's badly needed. And every account with edits >100k should be renamed only under the supervision of system admin. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 01:13, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

Just a heads up. {{No template}} appears to have been tailored for use at this project, at least at one time. It is currently nominated for deletion at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2019 February 10#Template:No template. Does the project have any use for this? change username 'Xcdt.asif.63' to 'xcdt.asif.63' Xcdt.asif.63 (talk) 08:15, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Not done: This is not the place to request that your account be renamed. But, even if you filed the request correctly, it wouldn't be actioned - due to technical limitations, usernames must start with an uppercase letter. However, you may use the template {{lowercase title}} on your user and user talk pages, and change your signature to reflect your preference. DannyS712 (talk) 08:27, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

Account name recreation seems impossible

This page advises users "to recreate the old account name" to prevent impersonation, but the registration interface doesn't allow that, it complains the name is "too similar" to the name entered. Does this doc need to be updated by someone who knows the full extent of what's happening in such cases? Thanks, A145GI15I95 (talk) 23:59, 14 March 2019 (UTC)

@A145GI15I95: Yes, the doc needs to be updated. The software now prohibits the creation of former usernames that were once renamed, so that step is no longer necessary to prevent impersonation. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 10:14, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Edit limit

PlyrStar93 Avraham Xeno (tagging you as you seem to be involved in this process and I imagine you know the answer)

I changed my username several years ago. I remember there being an upper limit on the number of edits that could be associated with an account, and that accounts that exceeded that limit could no longer request a username change as it would place too much strain on the servers. I remember the limit being disclosed somewhere easily accessible, but I can't find it now, despite checking several revisions of the "Changing username" page and the associated talk archives. Does that limit still exist?--MainlyTwelve (talk) 22:12, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

The limit no longer exists or is somewhat in the clouds. If we rename someone with very many edits, we usually have some techie people standing by to pour water on any server fires we start. –xenotalk 22:16, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Username Change

@Anonymous Dissident: If you change your username and if someone replies to your old username, do you still get a notification? (I checked the article's history and thought that you'd probably know an answer to this...)

Adamilo (talk) 17:08, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

Adamilo, your ping did not work as the ping feature only works when you add a new line and sign it using four tildes (see Help:Fixing failed pings).
In response to your question, the answer is no. When renamed, your old username is not connected to an account any longer (and for a time people could create a new account under an old username). As such, pings made to the old account will fail. If you go to your notifications preferences and enable "Failed mention" notifications, you will be told when your ping was not sent. If you attempt to ping an old username, you will get a notification telling you that the ping was not sent because the user doesn't exist. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 21:26, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Change name request not using first in first out

I am not sure how the process works in this area. It seems like the change name request is not using first in first out process. If the first in first out process is not being use in the change name request, it would be good to add a notification to indicate that as future requestors will know. Another note is to add the timeline that the administrator will responds to the request (e.g. 1 day, 1 week or whatever). Hopefully my views are not too arrogant. Thank you. Fiipchip (talk) 04:33, 25 August 2019 (UTC)

Flipchip73, I don't know what made you think that we don't use first in first out. Yes some request are usually not attended when they have some issues and there's is need of more to look on, but once a request has no more check up required, it's handled asap. And about the time, there's a line in instructions – It may take a few days for your request to be completed. Again there's no fixed timelines due to checks and in some case user inputs is also required, so we can't decide when the user will respond. Hope that answers all your questions. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 08:07, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
Also to note that administrators are not the ones that are able to, nor have the authority to, handle requests. The ability to rename users lies only with global renamers and stewards. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 12:14, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

Semi-protected edit request on 17 October 2019

Hi,

1) I have been a registered Wikipedia user since at least 2002. I did not use that initial account for several years, and had not provided an email address, so when I wanted to access the account I found I was unable to do so.

2) In the interim, I made a great number of edits and contributions as a non-registered user, under several DNS numbers.

3) I have run into occasional problems (and some prejudice) as an unregistered user, so in 2011 I attempted to create a new account; that account was immediately blocked, and despite a good deal of discussion over 2 years I was unable to get the account unblocked.

4) Since 2011 I have made hundreds of edits and contributions through a shared DNS, 74.95.43.249, the majority to music-oriented articles. For the most part the contributions have been well-received.

5) So, I decided once again to attempt to become a registered user. In perusing the list of registered users, I came across one with a name that WOULD have been my first choice, but was, for whatever reason unavailable at the other times I attempted to register. The name on the account is, in fact, my own.

a) This account seems to have been created almost 2 years ago, and has NO activity -- no edit history, no contributions, no talk page activity.

b) Having discovered the "usurp" template, I decided to put in a request to usurp this apparently unused, abandoned account.

c) I attempted to login from the 2011 account -- which I could do -- but since that account is blocked from activity, I am unable to submit the "usurp" template from that account.

d) So I created a NEW account, THIS one: DNS-74-95-43-249

e) Upon logging in, however, I discover that -- because this is a new account -- I am blocked from editing the "usurp" template to make the request.

7) These continual "catch-22's" are quite frustrating. So ... I am making this request for an exception: to be allowed to submit a "usurp" request from THIS account, for the following reasons:

a) I would really like to become a registered user, and the account I am seeking already has my name on it.

b) Even though this NEW account doesn't have sufficient activity on it to allow me to submit my request, I have been a consistent, and I think not ill-regarded, Wikipedia editor for well over a decade, with hundreds of edits and contributions to my credit.

c) It seems pointless to have to initiate a spate of activity on THIS account, just to be able to request a different account; this brouhaha has been going on for years.

d) The account I seek to usurp appears to have been abandoned, and I would greatly prefer to contribute via an account which has a meaningful name, than as some DNS or random-character user.

REQUEST: Please remove the "semi-protection" from this page for my account, so that I may complete and submit the "usurp" request.

Please allow me to submit a "usurp" request, and legitimize years of contributions by becoming a registered user with a meaningful username.

Thank you.

Why can't I find the request to this username change?

There is one particular user rename change which is this one and having looking through the archives I could not find a request for Chet B Long to be renamed to Coffee. Quahog (talkcontribs) 20:28, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

It might have been done over on Meta rather than here. In that case, it won't show up in enwiki logs. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 20:35, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
Really? But the rename log says "WP:CHU". I know that the WP:CHU archives get kinda fuzzy the further back you go. I'll have a look. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 21:08, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
Also to note, this was done before SUL finalisation and global rename was a thing, so all renames had to be done locally. Therefore I do not think this was processed on Meta. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 21:09, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
So I did some page history flipping of WP:CHUS and WP:CHUU and I couldn't find the request, even when searching amongst revisions from that time period (late August 2008). I flipped through the page history of m:Steward requests/Username changes and couldn't find the request either, so I don't think it was done on Meta (and per this, I don't think they would've taken requests to rename an enwiki account given how we have active crats). So I see where the mystery is going. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 21:20, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

Changing multiple usernames in non-English Wikipedia spaces

Hello. Between 2008 and 2010, before Wikipedia had the technology of global accounts, I made several accounts on non-English Wikipedias with varying usernames, other than the one I was using at the time. Specifically, I contributed to the Italian, Spanish, French, and Polish Wikipedias. I was wondering if there was any way to change those usernames to my current username of Mungo Kitsch. I'm hoping to centralize my editing history from these Wikipedias so that my potential navigation to non-English spaces can be more seamless. Thoughts? Mungo Kitsch (talk) 01:25, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

@Mungo Kitsch: for the most part, no - merging of accounts is not possible (c.f. phab:T49918). Can you give a few examples though? — xaosflux Talk 01:43, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes. The usernames I had are as follows: Progressiva (Italian), La tabla de negra (Spanish), Om nom Symmachus (French), Symmachus! (Polish). (The usernames are all over the place, with some cringe qualities, in my opinion.) None have had contributions for almost ten years. Now that you have further context, is there anything that can be done with the accounts, or should the just be scrapped for good (or, at least, soft-redirected?) Mungo Kitsch (talk) 01:54, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
Stewards used to be able to stitch varied accounts together. I don’t know if they still can or if they accept such requests. –xenotalk 02:46, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

I believe your recourse is this, User:Mungo Kitsch:

As of 2005, edits are no longer reattributed, so this page is no longer active.
However, you may wish to consider the following options:

You may make a list of your contributions and post it to your new User page, or a subpage of it. If you have a static IP (all your edits came from the same IP address) you can easily copy this list from the Contributions page -- just click the "User contributions" link from the sidebar of the User or Talk page of the old IP (this takes you to Special:Contributions/(IP address)). If your contributions were made under many different IPs, you will have to assemble the list by hand.

If you have a static IP that will not be reused by others, you may redirect your anonymous User: and User Talk: pages to your new account.

  • Put a note at the top of your new User: and User Talk: page to explain the change.
  • This does not merge your contributions history; old edits will still be attributed to the old (IP) account, but anyone investigating those edits will be redirected to your new name.

Box copied from WP:CATT. Regards, CapnZapp (talk) 11:22, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

  • @Mungo Kitsch: those accounts are not "local" isolated types of accounts, they were converted to central account (e.g.: Progressiva, Om nom Symmachus). As xeno noted, this would need to be done by stewards, however the notice at meta:Steward_requests/Username_changes#Requests_involving_merges,_usurps_or_other_complications is that We are sorry to announce that Global User Account Merges are not possible. As such, we will not accept any request to merge user accounts as it is technically impossible at this moment to do so.xaosflux Talk 11:29, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
There is a lot of confusion going on here. What Xaosflux and CapnZapp are correctly pointing out is that is is not possible to change the User ID of an edit, and thus impossible to merge two accounts on one wiki. It is, however, possible for stewards to rename accounts on individual wikis, which means that a steward can in theory create a new global account consisting of en:User:Mungo Kitsch, es:User:La_tabla_de_negra, it:User:Progresiva and so on if Mungo Kitsch still knows the password to all of those accounts. This is what Xeno is pointing out above, and will need to be requested at m:SRUC. See m:Steward_requests/Username_changes/2020-02#Elcairo for an example of that kind of request. * Pppery * it has begun... 15:36, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes; in the past they could, by using the old rename facility, break accounts from an SUL and then rejoin them to a different one. It’s just a bit of a hassle. –xenotalk 15:48, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
I understood what you meant, but thought the wording you used was unclear and could be interpreted as contradicting the posts below your comment. (It's not "in the past"; my example was only a month ago, and the reason it hasn't happened since is that this sort of request only comes up every few months). * Pppery * it has begun... 16:18, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
Yeah it's a recent example but I think it's not worth in this case. The maximum number of edit in these account is 65 and the only steward who handles such requests said in above example that it's not worth when number of edits are low. Also I would like to mention that it's a dangerous approach and there could be alot of mess of things doesn't end up correctly, so many steward and developers discourage this way, thus we should not encourage either. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 08:13, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
I'm not sure I follow? Isn't this up to people in the know (i.e. involved stewards). What do we gain by preempting their decisions? I see no reason why Pppery ought not to provide relevant information - it's not like there will be a deluge of requests just because we hide the possibility? Or did I miss something? Cheers CapnZapp (talk) 11:55, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

And one more question. Part of the usurpation process involves emailing/leaving a note on the target username's talk page. Are clerks permitted to do this? Sam-2727 (talk) 20:53, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
@Sam-2727: Hey, for some reason I did not get your ping. I think assistance page is enough, just like to add that while clerking only add notes about the issues that are a hurdle in renaming (i.e username already taken, UPOL violation, active block on other projects, vandalism only account), issues like a conflict with other names or history of renames or low edit count are unnecessary and could be confusing for requestor. About the usurpation notification, yes feel free to post on talk page but in case of email I think it's best if a renamer handle it (as while accepting or rejecting they can check status of email notification easily). ‐‐1997kB (talk) 15:02, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

Enquiry

Hi, I don't know if I want to do this yet, but I've always wondered if I could do this if I wanted to... RTG is based on my initials, and I've always wondered, if I simply renamed my account to my full name, would I still have the entitlement over "User:RTG", or would it be free to be usurped? ~ R.T.G 19:20, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

@RTG: If you are renamed, your old name will be reserved and cannot be registered again by another user. The only way to use the name again is if an account creator creates an account under that name, or if another user is renamed to that name by a global renamer. Neither will be done accidentally; the software will display a message whenever a user tries to register your old name, or when a renamer tries to rename an account to that name.
In the past, it was possible for anyone to simply re-register an old username and use someone's old name, so some users re-registered their old usernames after being renamed to prevent this. This is no longer necessary in this day and age. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 20:53, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

Eligibility enquiry

The guidelines for username changes say that usurpations are not possible when the username is registered to an account with valid edits; does that apply to long-inactive accounts? I want to change my username to Benjamin, and the account with which it is associated has valid edits, but has been retired and unused for 12 years, and was seemingly not active on the Wikimedia sites I use, so there shouldn't be a cause for confusion if I appropriate it. Username change limit & changing back

How many times can I change a username? Is changing back to an old username allowed? 129.49.14.43 (talk) 22:22, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

In general, we ask that users think username changes through before requesting. There is no hard and fast rule on the number of renames a user may request; however, users are generally not given more than two renames. This is mostly to prevent abuse of the system. Exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis.
It is possible to ask for a rename be reversed, subject to the above guideline. Again, this is done to prevent abuse, and exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis. For example, asking to be renamed "for a special occasion" and then be renamed back might not be granted, while being renamed and then asking for it to be reversed due to harassment under the new name typically is granted. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 16:01, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Username Change Request

From “II-ROYALS-II” to “Charlie Hollow”, “charlie.hollow” or “charlie-hollow”. (Listed in order of preferred to least preferred username; per availability) II-ROYALS-II (talk) 11:51, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

Username change

I would like to rename myself to JumpyThePenguin if possible, thanks so much! GWTreecko (talk) 21:44, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

@GWTreecko: Hi there, you're going to want to make your request at the proper place at Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple. bibliomaniac15 22:03, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

Silly question...

What is the policy on changing the name of bot accounts? While it ultimately does not matter in the slightest, it would be nice to align my bot's username with mine. I realise however that bot accounts often have a high number of edits (in the case of mine, 25k), and wonder whether the general guideline is "don't waste CPU cycles with this"... ƒirefly ( t · c ) 15:18, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

@Firefly: that would be fine - I'd def suggest that you recreate the account after rename and redirect it to the new name though. I'm not exactly sure, but it may require you to regenerate your authentication grants, so you would have a little down time while reconfiguring. — xaosflux Talk 15:22, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: yes I'd assumed that I would need to regenerate my OAuth tokens post-rename, but that's not the end of the world. And yes, I will recreate the account (happy for a sysop to block it as it shouldn't be editing). I'll file a request. Thanks! ƒirefly ( t · c ) 15:43, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

"Request page" instead of "venue"

Would anyone object to using "request page" instead of "venue" to make things easier to understand? None of the links appear to use the term "venue" either. Cheers, Fredlesaltique (talk) 07:05, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Woops!

I accidentally filed my request to change my username twice. Is there a way to undo that, does it matter in the slightest, or is there anything else I should do? Orlando 2006-2021 (talk) 10:40, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Backlog

Noticing a growing backlog, is it time to route requests out to m:SRUC and the queue? K6ka? –xenotalk 00:31, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

Someone needs to roll up their sleeves and clear that backlog. I'm currently at work now and don't have time to tackle it. I'll see if I have time later today if nobody else gets to it. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 13:55, 8 April 2021 (UTC)

Changing name

Excuse me, How much time is needed to change my username? Some usernames was changed quickly; but I requested to change my name 10 hours ago, and I still have the current name. Jag-Eun Byeol (talk) 06:01, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

It may take days. Orlando of Arrakon "Kharakovh" (talk) 18:25, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

"Simple" name changes

What constitutes a "simple" name change? Wit776 (talk) 18:51, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

One where you don't request a username that's already been registered. Cabayi (talk) 18:18, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Simple Name change when

Hello, I've written my request on the simple username change page and the bot have accepted it. When will my name be changed? Thank you for your time.

PortugueseFootballer (talk) 12:02, 30 August 2021 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay! I've just processed your request. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 13:49, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Time Delay

Hello, again. Are there other volunteers ready to change names? The last one was August 6th, and I find it relatively hard to believe that no one is monitoring this project. Please be more proactive, thank you. Gongfong2021 (talk) 22:10, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay; I've been busy with other parts of my life and haven't had much time to dedicate to the project. I've just cleared out the backlog on the Simple request page. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 13:49, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Changing my mind

Hello! I initially wanted to change my name into "深玉" but I do not wish to use that name anymore. I would like to change into another username (suuuuuzu) instead. What steps should I take if I want to change my name change submission? I apologize for the inconveniences! Suzu2309 15:17, 22 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Suzu2309, sorry for the late response! You can simply leave a note under your original request saying that you would like to cancel the request. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 13:20, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
Hello! My apologies for the late reply also but I noticed that the request was deleted, and I gladly appreciate your help! Suzu2309 16:32, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Home wiki non-existant

Hello! So while I was looking at the requirements for usurpation, I read this "The account you want to usurp must have the English Wikipedia as its "home wiki", i.e. a symbol of a house should be displayed next to the en.wikipedia.org entry for the account at Special:CentralAuth.", however when I look at the account I'm thinking about possibly usurping on CentralAuth. I see no house symbol next to any of the entries. I thought that might just be because the account hadn't made many edits, but even look at my own CentralAuth entry I see no house symbol anywhere. Has this "home wiki"/house symbol been removed? If not then why is it not appearing? ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:38, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

@Blaze The Wolf: so that's not entirely accurate anymore. In general, we will only deal with a usurpation request here, on the English Wikipedia, if both the current and target accounts are primarily (almost exclusively) used here. For accounts with activity on multiple projects, meta:Steward_requests/Username_changes#Requests_involving_merges.2C_usurps_or_other_complications should be used instead. — xaosflux Talk 20:03, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
Ah alright! Would it be wise to change that or no? ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:04, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
It still holds true for some, but updated guidance in addition is probably a good idea. — xaosflux Talk 23:40, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

Complicated directions

Is all this instruction really necessary for 99% of username changes? I feel like there should be a place for me to send someone who just (and definitely) needs to change their username. They don't need to think about consequences or alternatives. They just need a straightforward change. —valereee (talk) 19:38, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

And where do they even go? Where are the username change requests? Given that the average username change probably involves a complete newbie who didn't realize their name violated policy, is it really a good idea to make it this difficult for an experienced editor to even help them try to figure this out? I can barely follow the various complicated instructions, and I can't even figure out where to go to check if the username change has indeed been correctly completed and is in queue waiting for a worker. —valereee (talk) 18:18, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
@Valereee: Special:GlobalRenameRequest would be the best place to send newbies too. It's a straightforward form, not that much different from any other form on the Internet. The biggest caveat is that it requires an email address to use, which is when the on-wiki venues would come into play. I do agree that the instructions are in dire need of cleanup, though... but I suppose that could also be said of a lot of other places on Wikipedia. Maybe someone who's good with JavaScript or MediaWiki extensions could write a tool that allows users to file requests on WP:CHUS and WP:CHUU by simply typing into a form, rather than having to mess around with wikitext. I think that would be the best solution, from a UX perspective anyway. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 01:38, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
@K6ka, thanks! That's where I sent a newbie recently, and they've said they applied for a name change, and I was trying to figure out how to check whether they'd done it correctly, and I realized I don't know where the requests made by that form even go. Where is the list of requested name changes generated by that form?
Yes, outdated and overcomplicated instructions are a sore spot for us. I got so frustrated by Help:Archiving a talk page that I created Help:Archiving (plain and simple) just for my own use. —valereee (talk) 14:33, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
@Valereee: When users submit rename requests using Special:GlobalRenameRequest, it goes into a queue that only stewards and global renamers (like me) can see; there's no public log of the request having been made. The requesting user is shown a confirmation message when their request has been submitted, and they are emailed when their request is approved or declined. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 14:41, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Oh, well, that would explain why I couldn't find it lol. Thanks! Would they have seen an error message if the request didn't succeed? The reason I went looking was that I wasn't sure whether the fact a rename hadn't happened in a couple days was because there was a backlog or because the request hadn't been made correctly. The user is Steiner Online Library, who has made only 11 edits and our ways are unfamiliar. :) —valereee (talk) 15:47, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
@Valereee: It went through correctly; we are just very backlogged right now. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 16:35, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
No worries at all, I understand that! :) Is there a need for more global renamers? I would be willing to apply for that permission and help out occasionally, assuming it's not something technical enough that I'd be a bad candidate. valereee (talk) 18:51, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
@Valereee: Right now there are ~65 open rename requests, but most of them aren't in English. Are you fluent in other languages? — xaosflux Talk 19:33, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
I am not. I have some French and a smattering of Spanish and Russian, but certainly nowhere near enough to know whether a username is problematic in any of those languages. valereee (talk) 21:14, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
