Comments at DS review

So the DS review closed before I could reply to your comment, but I was wondering if you could elaborate on what you said at DS review. Specifically, how you spoke about how you both actively edit and admin in the same areas and I've noticed you've been a frequent contributor and participant in AE threads about Indian politics while also acting as an admin in that area. Would you consider no longer acting as an admin in areas where you frequently edit; especially controversial ones such as politics or ethnic disputes in South Asia? Chess (talk) (please use {{reply to|Chess}} on reply) 06:00, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

@Chess: I'm going to assume you didn't intend it that way, but you've asked me a very leading question. Of course I don't act as an admin on specific topics that I edit frequently. The number of disputes is large enough that there's still several arenas within ARBIPA where I can do admin work, and even in areas where I am involved, there's no reason I shouldn't comment on disputes as an interested party. If you think I have breached our admin conduct policies, please say so directly, and provide evidence for it. Vanamonde (Talk) 15:52, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
I was trying to not directly accuse you of violating policy; but yes, I believe you're WP:INVOLVED in (some of) the areas you're adminning. Specifically, your comment that "I don't often levy sanctions myself, but I have participated in the discussions that led to them very frequently, and I do take admin action in this area on a regular basis. As such I do not draw a distinction between my experience as an admin and as an editor when commenting here." made me concerned that you don't draw a distinction between your experience as an admin and editor. There is a difference commenting on disputes as an "interested party" and as an uninvolved admin, and while I don't have a problem with commenting as an "interested party" I would appreciate if you didn't comment as an uninvolved admin. For example, here at AE you commented as an uninvolved administrator [1] supporting action on ChandlerMinh despite frequently editing in India-related cultural disputes. Likewise you commented as an uninvolved admin supporting a tban for SpicyBiryani from India-Pakistan-Afghanistan armed conflicts [2] despite editing in that area. Likewise for Towns Hill [3] which was related to. I was wondering if you would consider no longer commenting at AE as an uninvolved admin on India-Pakistan conflict related issues as well as Indian politics/culture/religious/etc disputes. Likewise with admin actions. Chess (talk) (please use {{reply to|Chess}} on reply) 04:26, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
Sorry, but no. Your interpretation of INVOLVED is rather too broad, and isn't supported by policy or current practice. I comment as an uninvolved admin when I am uninvolved with respect to the users whose behavior is being considered, or the specific content where their behavior is being considered; and I have been quite scrupulous in this regard. There's numerous admins, and other editors, who are quite familiar with my editing history; and the fact that none of them (the reported parties included) complained about where I placed my comment should be an indication to you that it wasn't a problem. I will continue to judge my participation at AE on a case-by-case basis, because familiarity with the broader topic is an asset when considering such cases, and AE reports often languish for lack of attention. You are taking my comment at the community consultation entirely out of context, which is especially unfortunate given that you were party to that discussion. Read it more carefully, please. WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  • Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  • England Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
  • Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
  • Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Creation of page Ganesh Chandrasekaran

Creation of page which was recommended for deletion by you in 2018. The article is about the Indian musician Ganesh Chandrasekaran. I have gone through the references, he has worked on three films as music composer. There are more than enough articles and write ups about the artist to have a mention in Wikipedia. I recommend it for consideration so that we can develop the article.

Hi, Vanamonde, I hope you are well! As you've probably seen, this is under discussion at Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion#Ganesh Chandrasekaran. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 17:26, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
@Justlettersandnumbers: Thanks for the note. I'm afraid I'm too busy in RL to investigate in detail right now; but I'd say that if there's any substantive material newer than the AfD, then an interested user should be given the chance to create this, and if they want to use the old draft as a starting point I don't see a procedural objection provided they are revamping it in userspace. If they fail to revamp it substantially, G4 would still apply, as I understand it; so we wouldn't waste much time. Vanamonde (Talk) 02:11, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I hope you're fine. I have reported a repeated violation here and would like to have your comment on that, if it's possible. --Mhhossein talk 18:37, 15 May 2021 (UTC)

DS 2021 Review Update

Dear Vanamonde93,

Thank you for participating in the recent discretionary sanctions community consultation. We are truly appreciative of the range of feedback we received and the high quality discussion which occurred during the process. We have now posted a summary of the feedback we've received and also a preview of some of what we expect to happen next. We hope that the second phase, a presentation of draft recommendations, will proceed on time in June or early July. You will be notified when this phase begins, unless you choose to to opt-out of future mailings by removing your name here.

Request the restoration of Patxi Xabier Lezama Perier

At some point, I noticed that Wikipedia's notability criteria (WP:ARTIST) says that a person is (likely) notable enough for an article if they are included in several museum collection.

The administrator SlimVirgin removed the page based on criteria (WP: ARTIST) and lack of reference from independent sources. This administrator has died and I cannot contact him.

Searching I found what the admin was requesting SlimVirgin, independent source reference and notability criteria (WP: ARTIST), see here: [4]. Those previous concerns are no longer a problem. In The Museum of Las Encartaciones you can find the work of this author included in the Cultural Heritage, Heritage Fund: Preserved Heritage.

Since Administrator SlimVirgin has died and protected the page, now I don't know who to turn to. Greetings and thanks.--Detoxtu (talk) 09:09, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi, the latest deletion was performed by me, after this discussion. I cannot simply reverse the deletion, and given the socking that occurred there, I am not comfortable providing a userspace copy. If you genuinely have found fresh sources, I would suggest you write a new version, and send it to the articles for creation process. I would also suggest pinging the people who !voted "Delete" at AfD to have a look at your sources, because if you don't have new material, your draft is unlikely to get accepted. Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production Edits

Hello- wanted to talk about the proposed edits to Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production -

WRAP audits are accepted by several major brands and retailers, including Walmart[1], Disney[2], Carhartt[3], and Costco[4]. In addition, several emerging brands such as Summersault[5] and Quince[6] utilize WRAP audits as part of their internal supply chain due diligence programs.

Information is sourced from CSR Pages of cited retailers or from independent publications. Would also like to update certification information using IRS form 990. None of the proposed cited content violates WP:SPS - none of the content is published by WRAP, nor is any content sourced from WRAP website. Open for discussion and proposed edits.

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

Moderation

Hey Vanamonde,

First I want to thank you sincerely for your immense effort to bring order to the MEK talk page. I was saddened to see this comment. It reminds me of what you said earlier at User talk:Vanamonde93/Archive 38#Feedback that I need to offer more compromise. Fwiw, I did take your advice; for example, after you and others called me out on replacing "Iraq" with "Saddam", I dropped the issue and pursued it no further. I would have made further "compromises to achieve a readable page" except most RfCs an discussions aren't trying to improve page readability, but instead trying to skew the POV one way or the other. I do keep restoring this section Talk:People's Mujahedin of Iran#Rough word count of each section, which I believe holds the key to reducing page size, which you have repeatedly pointed out as a priority. I recently pinged Bahar to it in an attempt to "reach out to moderates on the other side".

I'm not saying all this to toot my own horn. I know I'm not a perfect editor and often make mistakes and lose my cool (that was partly why I asked you for feedback in Feb). But rather I want to say that your frustrations have not fell on deaf ears. Your moderation was super helpful in moving the discussion forward and breaking the deadlock. So I hope you will reconsider about moderating future discussions (if not immediately than maybe later on).

Thanks once again for your hard work on the page, VR talk 08:24, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

@Vice regent:, the kind words are appreciated. For several months, it has felt like I have spent hours reading and commenting, to no tangible benefit; so I feel quite disinclined to invest further time there. If circumstances change further down the line, I may reconsider. Best, Vanamonde (Talk) 20:45, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
  • Thank you for taking care of the page. I can understand every one has real life commitments (life, job, studies and etc) and I should thank you for your time despite these real life issues. Also, I believe your comments were so helpful in guiding the discussions. I can show some examples, but I am here just for saying thanks. --Mhhossein talk 18:04, 12 June 2021 (UTC)

@Ritchie333:, I've replied, more substantively this time. Vanamonde (Talk) 21:28, 12 June 2021 (UTC)

Your response please

Thanks for your comment. I completely understand you have some real life issues to handle and I acknowledged it in my thanks comment. You said the report had become a mess and you don't have the time to address it. But, isn't it signaling them the message that they can turn the ANI report into a mess so that no one deal with that? Just look how the reported user turned my repot into a real mess. --Mhhossein talk 06:24, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

Mhhossein, "I don't have the time to deal with this" means exactly that. I don't care who is at fault; I am not going to look into it. If another admin wants to, they can do so, and AN is the place for that. Vanamonde (Talk) 22:58, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
Ok, thank you anyway. I hope your RL issues go well. --Mhhossein talk 11:54, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 July newsletter

The third round of the 2021 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 294 points, and our top six scorers all had over 600 points. They were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 1825 points from 3 featured articles, 44 featured article reviews, 14 good articles, 30 good article reviews and 10 DYKs. In addition, he completed a 34-article good topic on the EFL Championship play-offs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a New York specialist, with 1083 points from 2 featured article reviews, 18 good articles, 30 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.

  • England Gog the Mild, with 817 points from 3 featured articles on historic battles in Europe, 5 featured article reviews and 3 good articles.
  • Hog Farm, with 659 points from 2 featured articles and 2 good articles on American Civil War battles, 18 featured article reviews, 2 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 4 DYKs.

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Thank you, Gerda, that's much appreciated. Vanamonde (Talk) 20:10, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Now reading...

A Hebrew translation of The Left Hand of Darkness. Printed in 1978, the paper is... a little crispy (turning the pages with care). El_C 20:33, 26 June 2021 (UTC)

Now  Done. What an amazing winter wonderland adventure. Sorry I missed you, hope all is well. Best wishes, El_C 15:29, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
@El C: Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I first read it as a teenager; I re-read it a few months ago, and found it could still make me stop and think. Sorry I missed your message; internet during travel has proven harder than expected, I haven't logged on for a couple of weeks. Hope you're well too. Vanamonde (Talk) 20:04, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Same (first teen-ager, then nowish). Definitely holds up. And so ahead of its time. I'm a huge fan of her writings. I probably got more Hebrew translations of her books than any other female sci-fi/fantasy author, which I thought you, especially, would appreciate. BTW, now reading a Hebrew translation of Der Tunnel (1913) — see User_talk:Gerda_Arendt#Now_reading.... Recommended. Glad to have you back! El_C 20:52, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Certainly appreciated! Someday perhaps I'll have the time and energy to read her in translation. As you've probably gathered from my content work, I'm an admirer too; though to be quite honest, some years after rewriting The Left Hand of Darkness, I'm not sure I've done the critical analyses justice. I'm not sure I'm genuinely back yet, that might take some days longer. Doing my best to run through my watchlist though. Vanamonde (Talk) 20:59, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
I think the maxim that we're often our own harshest critics rings true here, because I, for one, think it's damn decent. Mind you, it's the only novel in her Hainish series that I have/read. Never read her in English, btw. Definitely should do that one day! Hmm, travel — not a simple proposition these days.... As it happens, I just got my 2nd dose earlier this morning (Moderna). Also, what is this W-a-t-c-h L-i-s-t of which you speak? El_C 21:25, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Y'know, that tab up there that must at this point contain 100k entries for you? I don't know how you'd do it. Congratulations on the vaccination! What with one thing and another it's been a while since I've got mine, so the travel is okay, really. Not so much for most folks though. I really appreciate the kind words; you're certainly right about self-criticism. The trouble is it was the first Le Guin article I overhauled, and though I read a not-insubstantial portion of the critical literature while doing so, I have read a lot more since; and so my earlier summary feels not slanted in any direction, but a bit thin. If you enjoyed Left Hand, and are looking for more Hainish Cycle works, I'd recommend The Dispossessed; a very nuanced critique of a variety of political systems, which I've been meaning to re-read, too. Vanamonde (Talk) 21:37, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Hey, nothing's wrong in overhauling the overhaul a bit. Up to 103,195 right now, to be exact (what am I doing?). But it's been, like, six months since I used it. I'm sure I'll get back into it eventually, though. In any case, it obviously can't really be used in an even remotely holistic way like one can with a smaller watchlist. It's more like a snapshots of interest thing. Thanks for the recommend. Looks like המנושל, which first came out in Hebrew in 1980, has gotten a new Emanuel Lotem translation in 2015 — more on him at User_talk:Valereee/Archive_35#Now_reading... El_C 21:51, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
When I'm not editing via spotty mountaintop WiFi I certainly intend to overhaul it; and as I've largely removed myself from Talk:MEK, I may have the time...Interesting! I did not know the name, thanks for pointing me to him. If you don't pre-empt me, I might write a start-class piece on him; that's a much more manageable project than re-reading the reams of papers about Left Hand! Vanamonde (Talk) 22:02, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Speaking of spotty internet, mine has been dying on the regular for the last 2 days (going on 3). Which is annoying — it's cable so, usually, it's very fast and very stable. Anyway, to give you a sense of my not inconsiderable library, I have more Lotem translations in it than any other translator, really, by a mile (though Gili Bar-Hillel definitely deserves honourable mention). Also, I think I mis-spoke, I might actually have more Margaret Weis books than I do Le Guin. Speaking of Tracy Hickman, when I was younger I thought he was a woman. Funny. Proposed Women in Green Editathon

Hello Vanamonde93 -- With the goal of helping to progress the WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) women’s rights-themed GA nomination goal for 2021, I’m proposing that WiG hold a special editathon event in the fall (maybe October/November?). I can assist with logistics, but I need to know how much interest/support there might be from WiG participants first. Please let me know what you think in the talk page conversation! All the best, Alanna the Brave (talk) 02:35, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

MEK ArbCom case request

Hi Vanamonde93. I hope you're doing well. ArbCom has received a case request regarding MEK conduct disputes. I would be grateful if you made a statement as an uninvolved administrator who has worked in this topic – it'll help us come to a better decision. Best, KevinL (aka L235 · t · c) 18:31, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

@L235: Apologies for a slow reply; I've been traveling, and my internet access is not to be counted upon for a while yet. I see that ARBCOM is leaning toward accepting. I'll leave a brief statement shortly, but I'm not going to be engage very deeply for a while yet. I will do my best to participate in the actual case, though again, no promises. A picture exists in Wikipedia with fake description

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jashodaben_Narendrabhai_Modi.jpg

Alt news fact-checked this as fake few months ago.

https://www.altnews.in/no-this-is-not-pm-modi-and-jashodabens-wedding-photograph/

"Alt News contacted Keyur, who is the incumbent BJP OBC Morcha Pramukh in Surat. He confirmed that the woman in the viral image is his sister Alpa Vankawala. The photograph was taken at her wedding on July 14, 1994. Hemant Chapatwala was then a Rajya Sabha member. “Narendra Bhai, Fakir Bhai Chauhan, and other BJP members came to attend the wedding,” Keyur told Alt News.

The individuals in the photograph have been identified below.

(1) Fakir Chauhan

(2) Narendra Modi

(3) Alpa Vankawala (Keyur’s sister)

(4) Damleji (RSS Prant Pracharak)

(5) Utpal Vankawala (Keyur’s brother-in-law/ husband of Alpa)

(6) Kashiram Rana (late BJP MP)"

The same image has also been uploaded as a Wikipedia file photo where the woman is identified as ‘Jashodaben Narendrabhai Modi’.

The woman is Alpa Vankawala not Jashodaben Narendrabhai Modi.

The copyright claims by the user who uploaded it are also fake. 42.110.201.93 (talk) 11:04, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

I'm not sure why you are messaging me about this; I do not habitually work with images, and moreover, this image is hosted on Wikimedia Commons, not here on the English Wikipedia. Based on the linked article, it seems clear that the license information isn't accurate, so you should start a deletion request there if you want to do something about the image. Ordinarily I would suggest also watching that user's contributions, but they have already been blocked, so nothing further to do in that regard. Vanamonde (Talk) 20:24, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

Arbitration case opened

You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Iranian_politics. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Iranian_politics/Evidence. Please add your evidence by August 6, 2021, which is when the evidence phase closes. You can also contribute to the case workshop subpage, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Iranian_politics/Workshop. For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration. For the Arbitration Committee, Moneytrees🏝️Talk/CCI guide 18:43, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

Howdy hello Vanamonde, in your statement at the request you mentioned we should include other editors in our examination of the topic area; I would be quite interested in hearing about such editors and think it would be most useful as an evidence submission, should you have the time. Smooth sailing, CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:42, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
@CaptainEek: Sure thing, it'll give me an easy place to start with the evidence! Vanamonde (Talk) 20:50, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

AE sanction

I don't think AKG is particularly innocent. This edit is quite strange. TrangaBellam (talk) 18:45, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

I don't find these lists to be encyclopedic. Which encyclopedia, other than us, had ever attempted ridiculous lists like these? TrangaBellam (talk) 18:49, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
@TrangaBellam:, if there's concerns with AKG's behavior, AE is the place for them. A side conversation on my talk isn't going to be helpful; could you please post there? I'm generally in agreement that that sort of list of conversions isn't encyclopedic; for one thing, any similar list (people with X affiliation) is almost certainly incomplete, given that most people are quite private about their religious beliefs. But that's first off a content issue, and second nothing I individually have any power to do anything about; a more general discussion about them wouldn't hurt if you wanted to start it. Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC is open to add a delay of one week from nomination to deletion for G13 speedy deletions.

Technical news

  • Last week all wikis were very slow or not accessible for 30 minutes. This was due to server lag caused by regenerating dynamic lists on the Russian Wikinews after a large bulk import. (T287380)

I observed you hard delete closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Disk-to-disk backup. Please can you WP:REFUND Disk-to-disk backup and associated talk page to my userspace or to draft space for my consideration in the future. If there is no talk page please advise. Thankyou. Djm-leighpark (talk) 23:09, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

User:Djm-leighpark here you go: User:Djm-leighpark/Disk-to-disk backup. There's nothing of substance on the talk page. Vanamonde (Talk) 00:10, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed you were involved in the turmoil on the article itself. The AfD nominator screwed up the nomination (this is not a second nom but a first). I don't trust myself to clean this up; perhaps you could? As an aside, see also Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Mekiakaro, filed by the author of the article. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:43, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Bbb23 Now I'm wishing I hadn't been...I think the second nomination in the name is actually okay; the first was a procedural close on an old version, but it exists, and I don't see a reason to delete or move it. There's very obviously some off-wiki nonsense going on about this topic, but I can't make head or tail of it. With three brand new accounts attempting to get this deleted I think a CU is justified: I'm happy to say as much at the SPI, and watchlist the AfD, but this might be a job for COIN, as I really don't have the time to go deep on this. Vanamonde (Talk) 17:58, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for looking at it. You're right of course, it's a mess.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:05, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

thoughts

Do you think something like

  • Whenever we’re on 2-a-days, require anyone with over X DYKs to either build a prep or move one to queue for every Yth nomination.

X and Y to be worked out in a subsequent discussion if we get buy-in on a possible way to get more help during the busiest times. —valereee (talk) 16:56, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

@Valereee: I'm a little lost as to the context here; aren't the current proposals at WT:DYK only about reducing the unreviewed backlog? Regardless; I don't think this is a great idea: I don't think we should require anyone to mess around with prep sets; they're complicated. Vanamonde (Talk) 16:58, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
Yes, this is about the prep/admin workload, sorry. Yes, preps are complicated, but I feel like someone with hundreds of DYK appearances ought to be able to figure out prep building. And any admin who has done hundreds of reviews can learn to move to queue, all that requires is knowing how to review.
I guess I'm the only one who thinks 2-a-days are a problem at our current staffing levels. —valereee (talk) 17:09, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
I don't know if you're the only one who thinks they're a problem: I've not paid attention to DYK in months, it's quite possible hooks aren't getting enough scrutiny at the moment. You're correct that someone with hundreds of DYKs could probably figure out how to build a prep set, but honestly those editors with >100 DYKs tend to be those who already do DYK maintenance, those who would be very upset at being made to do it, those who aren't active enough at DYK for it to mean much, and those we don't want doing prep sets anyway. If the threshold is 100 DYKs, I really don't know how much it would help. I don't think I'd oppose such a change if you suggested it though. Vanamonde (Talk) 17:13, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
That's okay, if it's not something even someone affected by the issue can fully support rather than simply not oppose, it's not worth bringing up. People directly affected by staffing issues at DYK are in too much of a minority compared to those submitting; consensus is difficult even then when it affects those submitting. Whatever the solution is it needs to be something pretty much all prep-builders and DYK admins can get behind. Honestly I probably need to just stop tooting this horn and just exit DYK during 2-a-days. :) If not enough experienced noms think the job is worth doing, maybe it's not worth doing. —valereee (talk) 18:08, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
I think your point is entirely valid, just that it's hard to legislate away what is fundamentally an issue of enthusiasm and willingness to do grunt work to support something you want. And I've been as guilty as any, though god knows I've been busy in RL for a while. FWIW, if it's admins and prep-builders we're looking for, personal appeals may do some good; speaking for myself, I've been unable to do anything at DYK for several months, but I've (hopefully) returned to regular activity as of this week, and now that I know we're facing a time crunch, could try to promote some sets...and others may do the same. Vanamonde (Talk) 18:13, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
It's definitely admins and prep-builders that are the bottleneck. Cwm is moving 1/2 of preps to queues and filling preps regularly. She's a workhorse, but jeez. Moving a prep every day, plus filling them? It's a lot. —valereee (talk) 19:02, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
