Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

That’s not how WP:INVOLVED works. I reviewed the request, determined there was block evasion as a CheckUser, and blocked one of the socks as standard procedure in the unblock decline. I then brought his appeal to AN for community review. I’ve only ever acted as an uninvolved administrator, which was the capacity in which I hatted that discussion. Awaiting SPI

Hi, I realise that SPI has been backlogged of late but is there any reasonably way to get someone to move along things at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Arunkumarnaik? As I stated in my last comment there, Bishonen has put temporary protection on the article but, knowing the topic area as I do, I'm pretty sure there will be another assault on it when that expires. With that in mind, it would be handy to have a CU record for the current investigation. Do I need to find an active clerk? Last time he had been impersonating another LTA and it hasn't been a year since. To me, it nullifies what he is saying in the new request and renders it insincere. He sang the same tune in the last UTRS before he was caught so it doesn't sound believable to me now...he was bald-faced lying while socking. I commented in the UTRS a couple of days ago. I not in favor of unblocking.

Nah, I have reasons not to both IRL and on-wiki. But I'll go ahead and nominate @El C, Amakuru, Amorymeltzer, and Vanamonde93: each of them brings something different, but each of them are sysops who have my highest respect and who I would trust with private information. I told Tony the same thing a couple of days ago, and I told him the same thing...but for the record; I've seriously considered. However, one of the things that has frustrated me the most about ARBCOM (not just this iteration) is that when editors raise concerns with PDs and such, there is a certain lack of response (witness my comments here, still unanswered), a lot of which I put down to the committee being flooded with demands on its time and energy. I know for a fact that I cannot supply that level of commitment for several months of the year. I don't think it would be fair, even assuming I could get elected. Vanamonde93, While I do think we do need more ARBCOM members, I still remember TonyBallioni's action's on this page, User_talk:יניב_הורון#Block_Review and revoking TPA was I think way overboard. But yet again, someone was blocked for calling out antisemitism. Sounds eerily familiar to the ARBCOM case you're responding to and getting no response from ARBCOM, right? I point you to AE right now, where someone is now there trying to push a fringe viewpoint. When the Polish government puts up a plaque about a concentration camp, Warsaw_concentration_camp and the English language Wikipedia has an article about this hoax for years. We have a problem. It's infuriating so of course people will get upset and it drives people away and then the only people left editing are those pushing the false narrative. ARBCOM's ruling will do that. No, he was not blocked for reverting any claim, he was blocked for using edit summaries which falsely accused other editors of anti-semitism and vandalism (as well as general aggressive behavior). This isn't that hard. The block explanation is pretty clear. And no, in that particular instance he was NOT reverting a "claim that Jews were able to come back after the Holocaust and simply go back to their homes without any trouble from the Poles" because nobody ever made such a clam. Morning Tony et al, and thank you for suggesting my name in this context - it is definitely an honour for me to be mentioned by yourself as a possible arbitrator, as I know that you're probably more qualified than anyone to fill one of the seats if you actually had the inclination to do so. It's not something I'd rule out, and I can imagine stepping up at some point in future, but like Vanamonde93 I don't think I can reliably promise to be able to put in the necessary hours at this point in time. Family life and IRL commitments make my wiki time somewhat sporadic. There's also a question of whether voters would think I'd spent enough time at the drama boards. I do monitor what's going in in Wiki politics and watch things like the Fram saga with what I hope is a dispassionate and objective eye, but my contributions to those discussions and ANI in general aren't huge at the moment. Whether that's a good or bad thing I don't know! @Ched: I'll be glad to make your acquaintance as well, but I can see you have good judgement for recommending Tony! Most of my work here at the moment, other than ongoing efforts to expand by content portfolio, is fixing and discussing main page issues at WP:ERRORS, and closing RM discussions and debating the minutiae of article titling with others who inhabit that space. 32.218.0.0/16 update

The range's new behavior seems to be blanking warning templates on whatever pages in their range they can get ahold of in a slow attempt to whitewash it in anticipation for an unblock eventually, including this one today...and you'll notice two years ago they added 'small x 3' HTML tags to make the warning they got absolutely unreadable. Talk page protection

@Flyer22 Reborn and Swarm: yeah, my intent was to leave it as indefinite, knowing it was out of the ordinary. I don't think there has been a single constructive edit to that talk page page by an IP or non-autoconfirmed account in its history, and the current "trend" in Wikipedia libel is to accuse people of being pedophiles. This has started to affect the oversight queue, which I'm pretty sure is how I found the page.
As a bit of context, the page has had 10 suppressions in its history. That's more than any page I've seen other than ANI. Three of those suppressions occurred within 2 months before I protected it, so the trend bares on that page. I don't really mind if Swarm still thinks we should give it a chance of being unprotected, but I did want to explain my thinking and note that I was considering the suppression log when I made the protection. Yep, I thought that was a routine talk page protection that you had forgotten about, since, obviously, we don't normally ever do long term talk protections like this.   • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

Technical news

  • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

  • Management has migrated to phabricator; to report a bug or request a feature, please create a new task with the script's tag
  • Message translation has been reduced; for common messages that are already translated in mediawiki core, the system translations are used, in order to reduce duplication of efforts
Recent additions
  • New pages are shown at the start of a site's feed
  • Log entries are shown at the end of a site's feed
  • Basic validation has been added to user settings, applied before saving
  • Site validation has also been added; a site (excluding unique projects like wikidata, meta, commons, etc.) is considered to be valid if it is the form of "language.project", where both the language code and project name are valid. It does not, however, check that the actual site is valid; only that it could be. In other words, even though sco.wiktionary refers to a site that doesn't exist, it is considered valid, because sco is a valid language code (sco.wikipedia is a working site) and wiktionary is a valid project.
Announcements
  • BREAKING CHANGE: Backwards compatibility supporting the use of sites as *.*.org (like 'en.wikipedia.org' or 'meta.wikimedia.org'), deprecated in version 1.7.5, will be removed soon; all sites should now be saved as *.* (like 'de.wikinews' or 'fr.wikisource')
  • BREAKING CHANGE: Storing user sites as window.GlobalWatchlistSites, deprecated in version version 1.11.11, will be removed soon; all settings should be stored in the window.GlobalWatchlistConfig object
  • Both of these breaking changes will be implemented alongside version 4.0; until then, any use of the config page (m:Special:BlankPage/GlobalWatchlistConfig) will result in saving settings in the newest format
Next release

WP:ORG

Hi. I am in the process of changing an article for a Guianan college to a redirect to another page because it is does not meet the criteria for notability per GNG or otherwise. As far as I know, colleges have fallen under the purview of WP:ORG. So, I just recently went to the WP:ORG page and in the intro it states:

The scope of this guideline covers all groups of people organized together for a purpose with the exception of non-profit educational institutions, religions or sects, and sports teams.

I believe this is an error or somebody rewrote that and it got past editors who normally watch guideline and policy pages. I know you were involved in editing this page awhile back, which is great and you did a good job. I believe the changes were related to an RFC. Also I checked out WP:SCHOOLS and for notability it refers to GNG, ORG, and GEO. So there is a discrepancy. I think in the past schools fell under the purview of WP:ORG as well as WP:N (WP:GNG). And I think that was true for a long time. I may as well mention that religions, sects, and sports teams are also organizations and I don't see how these do not fall under the purview of WP:ORG. Dear Tony, I received an off-wiki request for an unblock, for IP 100.15.83.114. It appears to be blocked for 9 months, until next June. I am no longer an admin, so I can neither confirm the block nor un-block. I think that might be a bit excessive. Can you unblock it, and/or ping me, please? Bearian, That IPv4 address is not blocked. If you're asking for a review of an IPv6 block, you need to know the address that's blocked. That aside, if it is a T-Mobile block on a T-Mobile IPv6 address (according to WHOIS), the block and length is justified. Helping a traveling friend

Good Afternoon Mr. Ballioni

I've writing here on behalf of another to show that yes more than one person is editing from this location. If all my coordination went well you should recieve, observe, or have recieved/observed a seperate message by the user with an account logged in from far enough away that it either verifies this claim, or verifies that we've created a teleportor.

Likely this kind of coordination is dissallowed by policy, but I'm ignoring it in this instance.

That said I accept full responsibility for this entire series of edits, it was my idea, and if consequences are warranted for me then so be it.

I plan on resuming edits from the nicest desktop here, because it's more convenient, that is, assuming any of this is permitted over here on our end much longer. I'd say it might be hard to tell us apart, but I have difficulty imagining our edits could be confused, as I have previously reviewed the relavent histories.

I've been hanging out over at 71.62.176.00/24 while using a differrent device as a courtesy, and I disclose this in case for some reason you feel that need to trace my history, but even I do not know the full number of addresses from which I have edited over the past several months.

It's impossible for me to absolutely prove that I'm not the director of a bunch of meatpuppets. Please scrutinize the edits if you wish, and decide for yourself whether something is amiss. Also, please note for the record that if my advice were always followed no account would've been created in the first place.

I've also arranged for another user to get on a differrent device down the hall and we're going to try to click the publish button at about the same time, so if all goes well we'll verify that differrent devices on the same network are on differrent IP ranges.

For some reason the user I'm assisting would rather not be obviously and directly associated with us, so you might want to surpress these edits out of an overabundance of caution lest someone notice the linkage, but I'm fine whether or not you chose to do so.

Pingbacks are probably useless, dynamic IPs and all that. So you may or may not get my attention even if you send a message within minutes. But if you must contact me in the future search the new page creation log for new user talk pages created with edit summary of "Info" and you've probably found who your looking for, in fact I adopted this practice a little ways back so I could track my own edits.

Please do not contact me unless you have issues with edits I've made or discussions I've participated in as I'm not at all interested in the social side of Wikipedia, thanks for your understanding.

I think people are too quick to forget that any such process will be used on actual people and not just in the abstract. Hi Tony. I've been reading the Alex Shih thread on AN, and was a little puzzled that you included this diff is the case you were making. I paid pretty close attention to that arb case, and was (if I remember correctly) not the only one to share Alex's frustration about the committee not seeming responsive to what appeared to me to be reasonable questions. I'm not sure I see that comment of Alex's as out-of-bounds, and was wondering why you do. My concern is with the pattern: I won’t use Berean Hunter’s phraseology of unworthy, but I do think taking into account Alex’s history on the project when looking at his actions is important. As I said to Vanamonde93, in any real world situation, someone who was allowed to exit with dignity, who then took advantage of the grace shown them, and proceeded to constantly try to sow discord within the organization or community that they were a part of would be very quickly be told to leave. This is a basic principle; someone who has once been in a position, even if they no longer has it, does have some credibility with the public, and can do tremendous harm simply by talking.
This is not to say that ArbCom should be free from criticism; I have my own of them. Instead it is saying any rational person realizes this and behaves accordingly. While that diff on its own might not be bad, taken as a whole, it shows someone who is only here to pick fights and tear down a community rather than someone who cares about building it up.
Tl;dr, I chose it to represent his pattern of trying to create controversy and add gasoline to fires rather than put them out. I could have randomly selected any diff from his last 50 edits and it would have shown the exact same pattern. TonyBallioni (talk) 22:03, 19 October 2019 (UTC)
I've sometimes toyed with the idea of writing an essay, "Don't be obnoxious, even though there's no rule against it." It's just one of the ways that trying to manage interpersonal interactions by consensus decision fails: there's always a vocal group who will agitate for the right to stir up the community. Too large?

I blocked Special:Contribs/2001:8004:0:0:0:0:0:0/32 for a week for what is likely pretty obvious reasons. I know I cast the net very wide but I did it between classes and haven't had a chance to narrow it down to a more suitable field; I know there will be some collateral damage if I keep it as-is and I'd like to minimize it. Those templates are called Discretionary sanctions alerts and have been placed on your talk page to alert you that the subjects of biographies of living people and firearms are both under Discretionary sanctions. As the template says, "It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date." @Pawnkingthree and TonyBallioni:I take exception to the claim that it is a generalized warning. If it were it would have been posted on the user page of all the participants in the article. The warning cleary states "If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor." I don't want to discuss them with any other edior, any other editor (including Pawn King, did not plaster that warning on my talk page. Tony should have the courage of his convinctions to explain specificially why he gave me that warning, and not rely on his exalted admin position and talk down to this lowly noob. I deserve to know why I am being warned, sans an explanation I cannot modify my behavior, if that is what is needed. A parent does not wag his finger in a childs face and tell them not to misbehave, when the child does not know what they did wrong. I was a drill instuctor in my past life, when I "iggiged" a trainee I HAD to tell them why they were being "gigged". New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello TonyBallioni,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 811 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.
