Babylon 5

It appears you have an interest in reducing the B5 cruft. I've never seen the show, but I see some low-hanging fruit there, and I've just prod-ed/redirected/merged some obviously bad B5 articles. (I have experience reducing Stargate cruft 10 years ago.) To proceed, I recommend some kind of Universe of Babylon 5 article as a merge target as to not nuke everything, but unfortunately, I lack background knowledge of the show to know what's actually important. I'll merge the recurring B5 characters into List of Babylon 5 characters, where they belong in their current state. I am confident that Good Articles could be written about the main characters and even some of the bigger B5 fictional element articles, but then again nearly all of them currently fail WP:PLOT. Judge Dredd-related PRODs

Just posting to wish you well in your efforts to get Wikipedia to apply its notability rules to Judge Dredd-related content. I've tried myself and failed. I think Devlin Waugh, Judge Death and Chopper have a reasonable chance of notability as they are the titular character of graphic novels, and some independent notability might be found for Mega-City One, but the rest are pure fancruft and should only be included, if at all, under Judge Dredd - or on Wikia. Proposed Deletion of Lonely Mountain

I recently deprodded Lonely Mountain, which you proposed for deletion. I wholeheartedly agree with you that that article needs work. But I don't think it needs deleted. See my rationale on the edit summary. While the mountain can't gain notability just by being one of the central locations of The Hobbit, it likely has some reliable coverage from this. Proposed Deletion of Five Flavours Film Festival

The Five Flavours Film Festival entry has been proposed for deletion because of No indication this event passes Wikipedia:Notability (events). Dear Piotrus, I must disagree. I can point out dozens if not hundreds of Wikipedia articles on film industry events of similar or lesser importance/influence/popularity. Removing all would be a small Armageddon. I created this particular article by analyzing which of the many film festivals in Poland still not present on Wikipedia should become included. I chose several which deserve such a distinction and created two entries so far (not including working on articles on other countries' festivals - I recently added an Italian one for example), both of which fell under your scrutiny. As there are several dozens of film events in this country, obviously some are more and some are less important or influential. Many are of local importance only, others are international only by the name. Merits, significance for global film industry, influence of the presented awards, attendance, number of past editions - I realize that there are many aspects to consider.

I re-edited Five Flavours Film Festival (FFFF) today to underline some notability features in the article. Please read it. I could extend it even more but obviously a Wikipedia article on film festival should be mostly information and not accolades or advertisement, so let me elaborate further on the subject here in the discussion page. FFFF is unique for the region (Central and Eastern Europe) as the biggest event of its kind and the only regular one. It's a medium-sized festival, but it has a decent attendance and excellent media coverage, if you analyze internet resources it is clear that it's recognized among Asian film specialists. It is embraced by NETPAC for instance. Many of the films have their European or even international premieres on it (not to mention that most are Polish premieres). It's growing year by year so further growth of importance should be expected. It can't rival the well established Far East Film Festival in Udine, especially in size, but it certainly doesn't fall far behind. Some initiatives (like Bhutanese films retrospective) are rather unique worldwide.

Creating new Wikipedia articles is a difficult and controversial task and I am not an experienced Wikipedian, I will therefore try to stick to just expand already existing ones. Let's just settle the case of this article here first. If my clarification and re-editing of FFFF article satisfies you, I will do the same with the second one, Short Waves Festival. There, in the already posted article, you can grasp the uniqueness of the festival by reading the history section. The problem is that its category (short film) is very common - there are hundreds(!) of short film festivals and reviews in Poland. I chose this one over some other bigger ones (if you are familiar with the subject you may know Zubroffka for exampe), as I know that it is attended by more international journalists and has some resonance in the (rather niche, but still) industry, also the total money prizes are biggest in Poland and among biggest in Europe.

Rather quick and unjust deletion of Sumaru

I was told not to long ago that the page for the Sumaru (character) was under consideration for deletion for being 'non notable' (I guess the new version of 'Non politically correct'). I replied on the talk page that any character from the pen of a famous author (no doubt Sax will get the same treatment soon) was notable as she featured in a BBC radio series, a series of novels, and a series of films as well as being notable for being a female lead character. I notched no other dissenting voices on the talk page and bang i's gone? What is going on here? Cite fix / cleanup

I have been doing a lot of cite maintenance over the past year. HA showed up in a cite error category. When I open an article I usually scan it for obvious improvements (image sizes/placement, layout, etc.) I sometimes try to make cites more consistent/functional by using templates. Max Samuel

Thanks for the suggestion and the remark on the article. Isn't the article too long for the DYK format? I feel uncomfortable with selfsuggestions, but am open to hear from your experience. As to the further "category Polish Jew" I think it is not too suited. Max Samuel was a member of the German minority community of Argenau (about his parents we still know only little), wether he mastered Yiddish or Polish language is not recorded anywhere, neither in the family memories nor in documents, but I guess for sure he knew some phrases in view of a majority of native Polish speakers in his hometown. All his siblings who continued to live in his former hometown opted for remaining Germans and left the Prussian partition area in 1920. Poland 1921 borders

The 1921 eastern border was quite unrealistic, a problem compounded by interwar Poland's ham-fisted attempts at Polonisation and general mis-treatment of its' non-Polish minorities. Even without Stalin, powerful Byelorussian and Ukrainian nationalist forces would have doomed the 1921 Polish border in any plausible alternate history. In future

If you encounter an ALLPLOT article on a non-notable fictional character that could be incorporated into a list somewhere if it isn't already, a good idea would be to boldly redirect the page. Theoretically, what you did with the Hodor article was the way to go to seek further community input and consensus for your proposed edit, but given the hostile (one might even say toxic) environment in fictional elements AFDs of late, doing so tends to create needless drahma: if the discussion ends the way it should because some brave admin dared to enforce policy/consensus, it will definitely wind up at DRV, and even if the discussion ends with "no consensus", the same users will just try to paint that as consensus to keep and prevent a good-faith merge/redirect discussion from taking place. If you had redirected off the bat, that would immediately place the burden on anyone trying to revert you to justify their own actions with reliable sources and consensus.

And, to be fair, the policy -- as stated in WBG's original close of the relevant discussion -- is to try redirecting first. This would also prevent "misunderstandings" where the !vote-counters try to say that you were in favour of "deletion, not redirecting". This claim was repeatedly made in the Hodor AFD (Ctrl+F "BEFORE").

(See also a recent incident where an editor claimed that because I had initially supported option C in an RFC and later changed my !vote to "C, but with the freedom to modify it later without being bound by a malformed consensus", my !vote couldn't be counted with the editors who said "C, not A, B or D". They even had the balls to call a 4/9 quasi-plurality Example text!)

Recent speedies

In addition to SoWhy's above message, I am concerned about a number of CSD tags you placed today, including Budlong Pickle Company, The Chainlink and Hypex Electronics. The only one I really felt I could justify deleting was Djinnworks, and even then it's a marginal case; can I be absolutely certain every single one of the 250+ revisions spanning several years unambigiously meets the criteria? Remember that speedy deletions are reserved for very obvious and unambiguous cases; for anything that isn't that, PROD or AfD should be preferred. I note that some of your nominations have been good, and I just think you need to slow down and raise the bar a bit. Quality over quantity. Most importantly, remember that taking a little time to improve an article is much more helpful to Wikipedia in general, than to spend a cheap 5 seconds just tagging an article and walking away for someone else to deal with it. ARCA on newspapers in TA

After further considering this issue, I'm not inclined to follow up on the Arbs' stated positions[2][3][4][5] with an ARCA request to repeat them in a "formal" setting, just because their position was misunderstood by one admin in one case. In other words, I'm less concerned with the fact that ArbCom didn't vote on that explanation, and more with the fact that 2/4 Arbs who voted for the restriction gave the same one. That said, if you wish to file on ARCA I will gladly join as a party. In the meanwhile, seeing as that addition has been reverted by three separate editors, and that the source is a disgraced academic writing on the very subject that got him dismissed from academy, it seems that it is also undue on the usual grounds of RS and CONSENSUS. What I think should be done is as follows

• Renew the WP:V discussion about newspapers in general, and about this change, which I propose to add to the policy. One important consequence of this change is that it removes blanket approval/disapproval of some type of mass-media, puts everything is a proper context, and makes an additional stress on REDFLAG.
• That will allow us to submit ARCA to request lifting sourcing restrictions completely, because they become redundant. Indeed, there is absolutely no problem to use any source in the Holocaust in Poland area, unless some user objected. First time addition of any source should not lead to any sanctions. However, as soon as a REDFLAG concern has been raised by someone, and that concern looks legitimate (it was supported by RS or logical arguments), the source that caused a concern should be removed, replaced or supplemented by a number of better sources. Perfection

Perfection was semi-protected (by you) in 2009, and has been that way ever since! I would be very surprised if you did. My instincts, though, are that such an article invites regular vandalism because of its subject matter. I wonder why the IP wants it unprotected. If you look at the page history and click "view logs for this page" it shows who protected it regardless of how long ago it was. The page has been protected for 10+ years so there is no recent evidence that the protection is doing any good. How many people read Polish?

Greetings, are you up for an intervention please? During my recent tidying on Madame de Staël, I dared to put a Polish reference (Popowicz 2013) to support the view that she is regarded as a "proto-feminist", not my invention. This is now reverted with the comment (from Holland, I believe) "not many people read Polish"! Should this be put to some kind of adjudication? Not much to merge, but it is always an option, and you are welcome to propose the merge (do ping me if you do so). Right now I am sure we don't need multiple articles about the mascots. Even ja wiki as far as I can tell has a single one. The benefit of a higher visibility AfD is that it can allow us to discuss whether a merge is indeed preferable to having a stand alone article about the mascots. Sorry you are getting threats of ANI. Although I would have to agree that the prods and AFD's get a little premature sometimes. I would recommend googling and finding a place to merge when notability is not proven. If merge was disagreed upon then go for it on AFD. But remember notability can be subjective and articles are allowed to be imperfect. Not all the sources digged upon = every source out there too. Just curious of how many articles you said were inclusive on (besides this one of course)? At least you are not TNT and are deletionist of every AFD out there. Although your prod pattern is more random and aimed at more major things that have plot. Also have you been in here. Another recommendation since you don't like plots and the style of which comic book related articles are done on these comic related articles is to bring a new consensus on style here. I do it, but when it comes to foreign languages, it is easy to miss things. If you can rescue articles with sources in Dutch or such, god speed. I am happy if we can rescue articles, but articles that do not show any evidence of notability for years need to be fixed, and if that is not possible, considered for deletion. That's thirty articles proposed for deletion, and the only thing that I "rescued" them from was Piotrus' inability to use Google Books and Internet Archive. Popping over to highlight something similar to User:Toughpigs and User:The Banner -- instead of treating content that is reasonably straight forward to research as improvable, you have nominated content for deletion. I am sad to see so many many mistaken proposals by someone so experienced as you, Piotrus, is very disappointing. I get how if you don't edit in the fiction space, that you might not have it in your back pocket to check Google Books, or to dig for reviews in fiction websites -- but it appears that your approach to these topics is to try to WP:TNT everything that an enthusiastic fan contributed to: its not good faith or using the deletion processes with due diligence. Who knows how many of the things that were deleted in the last few months are there because the deleting admin didn't check your work and it should have been kept: you're trusted because of your experience, please use it wisely. WikiCup 2020 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 57 contestants qualifying. We have abolished the groups this year, so to qualify for Round 3 you will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

• Epicgenius, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with a featured article, five good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 895 points.
• Gog the Mild came next with 464 points, from a featured article, two good articles and a number of reviews, the main theme being naval warfare.
• Raymie was in third place with 419 points, garnered from one good article and an impressive 34 DYKs on radio and TV stations in the United States.
• Harrias came next at 414, with a featured article and three good articles, an English civil war battle specialist.
• CaptainEek was in fifth place with 405 points, mostly garnered from bringing Cactus wren to featured article status.
• The top ten contestants at the end of Round 1 all scored over 200 points; they also included L293D, Kingsif, Enwebb, Lee Vilenski and CAPTAIN MEDUSA. Seven of the top ten contestants in Round 1 are new to the WikiCup.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. In Round 1 there were four featured articles, one featured list and two featured pictures, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. Between them, contestants completed 127 good article reviews, nearly a hundred more than the 43 good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Contestants also claimed for 40 featured article / featured list reviews, and most even remembered to mention their WikiCup participation in their reviews (a requirement).

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

WikiCup newsletter correction

There was an error in the WikiCup 2020 March newsletter; L293D should not have been included in the list of top ten scorers in Round 1 (they led the list last year), instead, Dunkleosteus77 should have been included, having garnered 334 points from five good articles on animals, living or extinct, and various reviews. Zamachowiec czy nie

Myślę że możesz spokojnie odpowiadać w języku ojczystym. Zastanawianie się czy Jerzy Zborowski jest zamachowcem czy nie jest dla mnie kuriozalne. W okupowanym kraju działalność obronna ofiary raczej trudno nazwać terroryzmem czy działaniami zamachowymi. Oczywiście można powiedzieć że punkt widzenia zależy od punktu siedzenia ale jednak gdyby wprowadzac tego typu rozważania to każdy nasz bohater narodowy byłby mordercą a każda ofiara bohaterem i vice versa. I'll better with the talk page template-I've been here for a while, but I'm a klutz with computers and sometimes I get confused about things.🙄 The next article which I'm going to start will be on Mr. Maneli. Unfortunately, there is much about his role in the ICC, but not elsewhere other than he was survivor of Auschwitz who was a prominent law professor at Warsaw State University who fled to the United States in 1968. I prefer to get the balance of his life rather the five years in total that he spent in Vietnam. I certainly take up your suggestion with bringing Mr. Seaborn to widespread attention. I didn't think anybody who was going to pay that attention to that article, so I'm honored that someone like you, who have always found unfailingly intelligent and friendly did notice. Thank you again for all kindness and advice. One of my big projects for this year (actually for last year, but I got sidelined) is article for the Danzig crisis, which at present we don't have-which seems a shocking admission given the crisis led to World War II in Europe. I'll hopefully now that I have free time I'll get to the article going, which I intend to be a multi-national affair with equal time given to decision-makers in Moscow, Warsaw, Berlin, Rome, Paris, London and the Free City itself. The article on the 1932 crisis seems pretty solid. Thank you for pointing out for me. No, I was thinking about the 1939 crisis, which always seems to get overlooked. I suspect that part of the reason is the popular tendency to see World War II as a morality play, a battle between Absolute Good vs. Absolute Evil. And since Mr. Chamberlain and M. Daladier were the men who went to Munich in 1939, there is a tendency to see them as part of the latter camp. The fact that the same leaders who went to Munich always declared war on Germany in 1939 makes things complicated, which is why the 1939 crisis gets passed over. There is a popular book, On the Origins of War by Donald Kagan, which is a very bad book. Kagan's thesis is that softness and mildness in foreign policy encourages aggression and resolution and hardness discourages aggression. It is not so much that I disagree with the examples he had chosen like the two world wars, but that this is a very selective use of examples to make grand, sweeping claims. If I wanted, I could pick many examples where wars might have prevented had there been a growing willingness to compromise, which would go against Kagan's claims that a willingness to compromise always shows weakness and hence encourages aggression. Different situations require different policies-sometimes one should not compromise and other times one should. What struck me about the chapter dealing with World War Two in Kagan's book is that it basically stops at the Munich Agreement and the events immediately preceding World War Two are given only one page. I suppose since writes this story as a morality play, admitting that the people he chose to cast as villains did after all stand up to Hitler would mess things up for him. Once many moons ago, I wrote up a massive MA thesis about the origins of the Second World War in Europe, and I struck by just different things were from the popular image. The French ambassador to Germany, Robert Coulondre, who being from the south of France was very close to his fellow southerner Daladier. Coulondre kept insisting in August 1939 that if France really stands by Poland, Hitler would back down. There is lot of evidence that Daladier was influenced by Coulondre-which completely contradicts the popular image of the French in 1939 as a cowardly and defeatist, a people who just simply lacked the guts to stand up to Hitler  .

And there is also a certain anti-Polish tendency-one is struck by the number of historians who write in a sneering, mocking tone about the leaders of the Sanation regime, especially Colonel Beck who admittedly was not a likable man, but he gets more abuse than what he deserves. The men who ran the Sanation regime were Polish nationalists, but I don't understand why this is used as a reason for indicting them. Much like French history, there is about Polish history that causes otherwise sensible people to lose their minds. I suspect this is due to irritation about what was perceived as a small power whose leaders insisted their nation was a great power. One of the systematic bias of diplomatic history is the tendency of historians to focus on the great powers and to quietly take in the views of great power diplomats as their own. Hence the tendency of too many historians to accept the tone of annoyance with Colonel Beck expressed by British and French diplomats who found this secretive, proud, obstinate man who believed passionately in the greatness of Poland a very difficult man to deal with. To be fair, Beck overestimated Poland's strength, but one must remember the mental picture that he had of the Polish Army in 1939 was that of the victorious army of 1920. And it is also true that Beck's high opinion of the Polish Army was shared by others. Note the British Army study in the spring of 1939 which rated the Polish Army as superior to the Red Army by a factor of 3 to 1. Yes, Beck as Foreign minister did what he thought was best for his country, which is what foreign ministers normally do; why this is so awful coming from a Polish foreign minister seems to reflect this systematic bias of diplomatic historians that the small powers should do as they are told by the great powers. Beyond, there is the popular stereotype in the English-speaking world (which I never found to be true) that Poles are "difficult". I suppose what I'm getting are here is that for many historians the Czechs in 1938 make for more much lovable victims than the Poles did in 1939. I think for all reasons, the Danzig crisis gets overlooked, a bias that I intend to correct. Thank you again for all your kind words and help, which is much appreciated here.
