Update on courses and ambassador needs

Hello, Ambassadors!

I wanted to give you one last update on where we are this term, before my role as Online Facilitator wraps up at the end of this week. Already, there are over 800 students in U.S. classes who have signed up on course pages this term. About 40 classes are active, and we're expecting that many more again once all the classes are up and running.

On a personal note, it's been a huge honor to work with so many great Wikipedians over the last 15 months. Thanks so much to everyone who jumped in and decided to give the ambassador concept a try, and double thanks those of you who were involved early on. Your ideas and insights and enthusiasm have been the foundation of the program, and they will be the keys the future of the program.

Are you familiar with the case if this suddenly famous quote by Piłsudski, "Naród wspaniały, tylko ludzie k***y"? It seems to be everywhere, including : http://pl.wikiquote.org/wiki/Józef_Piłsudski . I know that quotes can appear out of nothing, and that those words might not have been esily tolerated back in the day. More importantly I haven't found a decent source to confirm this. This makes me curious, so I decided to ask, considering you have contributed lots to the history articles. I know this may not seem very important, but a person's supposed words spread very quickly. You speak English quite well and may fix some problems of this article I haven’t noticed. Unfortunately, a few persons knowledgeable about this topic are topic-banned now. In addition, the new requests are opposite to the previous ones you made before. When the article was nominated for the Good Articles, one of the requests was to make subsections in the article and resulted in that its table of contents became long. Now, on the contrary, one of the requests is that the table of contents needs to be shortened because it is too long. These opposite requests add to the excess vain work on the article. WikiCup 2011 September newsletter

We are on this year's home straight, with less than a month to go until the winner of the 2011 WikiCup will be decided. The fight for first place is currently being contested by Principality of Sealand Miyagawa (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) and Australia Sp33dyphil (submissions), all of whom have over 200 points. This round has already seen multiple featured articles (1991 Atlantic hurricane season from Hurricanehink and Northrop YF-23 from Sp33dyphil) and a double-scoring featured list (Miyagawa's 1948 Summer Olympics medal table). The scores will likely increase far further before the end of the round on October 31 as everyone ups their pace. There is not much more to say- thoughts about next year's competition are welcome on the WikiCup talk page or the scoring talk page, and signups will open once a few things have been sorted out.

personal attacks

Hello Piotrus, I'm puzzled - you criticised me for bringing up the EEML (which I was a victim of, btw) yet you don't seem to have criticised Volunteer Marek for this insult, calling me 'asshole'. Why is what I did worse? And really, do you think that VM has been a helpful presence on the murzyn page? He's deleted obvious things (such as the existence of well-known phrases) by claiming the ref isn't to his liking. The refs were fine for such well-known facts. Why hasn't his behaviour got your goat? Malick78 (talk) 08:24, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

  • In my view, VM's erroneous and over-pedantic application of WP rules (BLP was irrelevant to what he objected to, the sources were fine for what they were claiming (the existence of well-known phrases), etc), so he was being disruptive. I may have teased him at points, but he ramped up the level by swearing, calling sources 'junk' ('unreliable' is the preferred term, surely?), and so on. I think I have enough to report him for disruption, so reminding him of previous sanctions against him is hardly a personal attack. It's giving him a heads-up. Also, comparing my 'junk' sources to the lack of sources in articles he has started/edited heavily isn't a personal attack, but a fair comparison. Why does he object to something I do, when he does similar if not worse (not having sources, junk or good)? The only answer is - he doesn't like the 'murzyn' article and is being unreasonable.   • Oh, and when I talk to VM normally, he tells me to "go away" and deletes the exchange. What's a guy to do? (And lastly, you're the only editor ever to complain about my style of doing refs. Help with Land value tax

Hi, I saw your name at Wikipedia:WikiProject Economics/Census, and that you are still active and I was needing some help at Land value tax. I understand it fully except for one part, "Because the supply of land is inelastic, market land rents depend on what tenants are prepared to pay, rather than on the expenses of landlords, and so LVT cannot be directly passed on to tenants....with no deadweight loss". That the tax is not being split between buyer and seller, and that there is no deadweight loss makes little sense to me, assuming a competetive market, no ceilings or such. The price of rent of an apartment is without a doubt based on competition between the thousands of renters in my city of a few hundred thousand people and not based on "what tenants are prepared to pay", I mean, somedays I would pay $20 for a donut, but the price, like rent, is found by supply and demand, not what I would pay for it. If my rent was $1000/month before the tax was added, when the tax is added, I will have to take a part of it, as the building owner's profit just went way down. The building owner's profit could only be so high before the tax as if he was making massive amounts of profit, investors would notice the high demand, low supply, and go build an apartment building. The only situation I see the quote being close to true is downtown Manhatten or Tokyo, where there is no room to build another cheaper apartment building as the land is all taken and building even higher gets too expensive. So, do you agree, can I remove that non-sense even though Adam Smith thought it was correct a few hundred years ago? Occupy Wall Street poster image

Can you link the image source to the page on which the image is featured, not just the image itself? This is important to make sure that it satisfies Wikipedia's copyright policies. Also, could you fix the rationale and fill it out seriously? Because your sarcastic input there is not very helpful. I am in group 2 grounds for divorce. I noticed when I was typing in the citation/ref link my author names were in red. Natalie Fisher is in my group and she helped me by using the automatic template. My namespace

Thanks for the list. It is a remainder of how many articles I actually finished. Take a more closer look:

  • Yer - is already in the mainspace and has been there for ages
  • AK - used to be in some article ages ago, not sure where it is now
  • Curzon line used to be in the mainspace before it was rewritten over and over again by others
  • div comp was my personal note to some friends with whom I was discussing something, it was never meant to be used anywhere
  • Same for OOB, it's a side-note to my work on WERS mod for Hearts of Iron ages ago. Wiki was simply easier to grab when I needed to take note of something
  • Evidence is some fork I needed for something when Wiki broke and that article didn't want to reload, I simply copied parts of it there
  • expulsion used to be in the mainspace, though it was so long ago that my copyedit is most likely gone by now
  • Medal gallery was my own list back in the days when I created the ribbons for various medals. The ribbons are in the mainspace, not sure about the table, but I doubt it was intended for any article.
  • Orliński was abandoned when someone else expanded the article
  • Ranks are already there in the mainspace
  • Same for "Rayski2", timeline, Vilnius region...
  • Not to mention you yourself helped me with the article in my namespace we now call the Warsaw Uprising :)
  • Western betrayal was, according to edit history, a fork just in case the new article gets deleted due to Communicat's edits. The threat is long gone I believe

So, all in all, out of those you listed only Kowel and Nalewajko have been abandoned by yours truly. The rest are simply either forks or my workspace articles that got copied to mainspace ages ago. No need to worry my friend. //Halibutt 19:07, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Family honour

The problem I have in the present situation is that the intro was so bad, that I have rewritten it off the top of my head, so to speak. As it happens, I have a lot of experience in the past, in writing and delivering public programs about societal issues. However, I have absolutely no textbooks to hand on this particular issue! Well, if you a the course instructor for this one, then for God's sake make sure they get it right, before they put it up! It's not a subject you can stuff around with, in a public forum. Why haven't you corrected the serious problems in the first paragraph? You have students here with a poor grasp of English grammar trying to define a abstract concept. But at the same time, it is an abstract concept in the defence of which people, mainly female, are routinely murdered. Amandajm (talk) 23:56, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
Never mind wiki's disclaimer. Few people read it! If this was not such a sensitive subject, I wouldn't be bothering to do more than make some basic grammatical edits and leave a message on the talk page. There appears to be nothing at all available online, that doesn't relate directly to honour killings. The topic is simply not dealt with in any other way, online. This means that they are entirely reliant on written texts, and it is possibly new ground they are breaking in many directions, because even modern texts will focus on the effects as a social issue, rather than the actual nature of the topic. Right now, what are essentially drafts are being widely published as almost the only easily findable and quotable source.
I notice that one of the contributors has referenced two of my statements, which is excellent. I don't mind what is changed, but the concepts need to be handled correctly and there needs to be a balanec, which will be difficult to reference, as almost every reference is highly negative and focuses on the single topic of the suppression of women.

Help On a New Topic

Brian Bitner and I worked today to learn how to split the page in half. We are using the cite http://wiki.siemens-enterprise.com/wiki/How_do_I_format_my_contents%3F currently, but still having a slight problem since our text is not of equal length, but once our text is closer to the same length, we will be able to use this code to divide the page as we had wanted for joint legal custody and joint physical custody in their subsections.

I'm not sure you understand what I meant, but I'm undoing my edit now. The article will still be properly referenced. Right now, there is a reference after every sentence. This isn't necessary since the same reference is being used. Also... what do you mean by preferably shortened reference? Bejinhan talks 03:21, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
The main reason why I pointed out this was because there is no where in Wikipedia where it states that every sentence should have a reference. There was a short discussion about this somewhere here (it's pretty old, and I'm thinking of starting a new one... we need something clear about this). In the grounds for divorce wiki page I am working on a new section called global grounds for divorce. The reference numbers for that last paragraph should be 19 and they stay at 17 and I have no idea why. The page number is correct in the link when you click the edit button.

Joint Custody Edits

Hey, I made some MAJOR edits to our page. First I had wanted to see if you could look the page over and make sure I am on the right track (it sounds ok, subdivisions look ok, references are ok, etc.). Also, I wanted to see how I determine how much longer it needs to be able to be nominated for "Did you know." It is at least double to triple what it was before, but I was not sure how I determine that it is exactly 5 times what the old length was, or if it just needs to be approx. that much longer, etc.

Joint Custody Article

Ok I will definitely add some more connections through those links like you recommended. I also have been making some new stub articles which I will connect to child custody and to each other, but I wont bother linking you all of the stubs till they are all made and I have sourced each of them with a minimum of at least one source, so I will keep you posted on that. I sent out an email to the other group members, and they will all be starting work on this over the next five days (I know Brian had told me he would not have a chance until Sun. to do anything since he had to work all of today). Hopefully we will have it up to par and be able to use DYK!

Custody Articles

I changed the sole custody article to a stub for legal and sociology portals, but the article is still listed as a start class article, I wanted to check how I fix this (I will have this article at least up to start class tonight, but the other 2 I am working on will not be more than a stub). Third-Party Custody vs. Third-party custody

Hey I had wanted to see how you get rid of an article. Currently, the article that is supposed to be up is Third-party custody, but there is a duplicate one called Third-Party custody. I wasn't sure how to delete it (I am beginning to think I actually cannot delete it haha). Also how do I go about fixing a linking issue I had. I have a little section I added to the pages basically stating alternate forms of custody, but some of the stubs I made are not linking (still red even though I have the stub made). Ok that makes alot more sense as to why I was having issues. I will make sure I watch capitalizations. The last thing I wanted to bug you with tonight was on Bird's nest custody. DYK and other issues

Hey so I went ahead (now that I finally got home) and went back over the article to double check that none of our sentences sounded remotely close to the original source (I got worried after the talk in class - I tend to get paranoid about these things haha). Anyhow, the main things I wanted to check with you were the following:

  • Does the bolding/title layout look acceptable now (the only thing bold is joint custody).
  • I debated it and I really do not think that it is worth wasting a tremendous amount of time to bundle four sources. I think my time would be better spent searching for new material, and if the problem would come up that I end up adding more sources to a sentence, then I feel I should address it at that point, but as of now, I do not feel that 4 sources warrants the effort of bundling really.
  • I have not replaced every one of the citation needed bullets, hopefully by tomorrow night Brian and I will have that section filled in.
  • Beyond this, what else would you recommend doing before we want to submit this to DYK (also I wanted to check that it was an appropriate length now, etc.) - And in addition to this would you mind helping us out on submitting this (If it is not too late I could meet with you Wed. after class to do it etc. - Whatever works for your schedule).
  • Will the issue of the article being addressed for merger impact DYK at all do you know? (I think we addressed this in class but I just wanted to verify)

Anyways, those were the main concerns I had wanted to address.

Family Honor-Editing references

Witam. Zauważyłem, że jest problem z artykułem "Ekstraklasa venues" Nie znam się zbyt dobrze na tych socjalistyczny-biurokratycznych zasadach wikipedii, ale "Ekstraklasa Venues" miała być tylko tabelką rozwijaną pod artykułami (template) a nie artykułem. Przez pomyłkę wyszło inaczej. "Ekstraklasa venues" jako artykuł jest oczywiście do natychmiastowego usunięcia I teraz najważniejsze: Czy mam rozumieć, że ktoś pobił jeden z licznych rekordów głupoty i uznał każdy artykuł (np: o Dialog Arenie, Stadionie Legii itd)do którego został podłączony ten template jako kopię artykułu "Ekstraklasa venues"?? Artykuły te mają czerwoną ramkę z informacją że są zakwalifikowane z tegoż powodu do szybkiego usunięcia. Zauważyłem, ze edytowałeś coś przy "Ekstraklasa venues" wiec zapewne wiesz o co chodzi. Czy mógłbyś w związku z tym usunąć ARTYKUŁ (nie template) "Ekstraklasa venues" i doprowadzić do tego by artykuły zakwalifikowane do rzekomego usunięcia nie zostały bezmyślnie usunięte? Z góry dzięki za wyjaśnienie tej sytuacji i wiadomość zwrotną

AE thread and followup

You asked here whether your participation in that AE discussion was acceptable, so let me answer this: no, in my view it is not, and you were in fact on the list of people I was considering for further follow-up sanctions. Your interaction ban comes with an exception regarding "necessary dispute resolution". But that exception has an understood "mind-your-own-business" written into it: participation in dispute resolution, including admin noticeboard discussions and the like, is never "necessary" for a user who is not himself an originating party of the dispute that is being discussed. What we had here was a conflict originating between Russavia and Vecrumba. If that conflict involved a breach of a restriction on the part of Russavia, it was up to Vecrumba, and nobody else, to bring the issue to the attention of the admins. No other editor who is under an interaction ban with either of the originating parties had any business being there. This is the one area where interaction bans actually do make sense, and ought to be enforced. We don't want you people turning up at the noticeboards in support of each other time and time again. Especially in this case, where collusion between this same set of people including you on noticeboard discussions was a central part of the original problem that led to the sanction. family honor - modifying content

On the dky discussion page Did_you_know_nominations/Family_honor it is indicated that there is still some content that needs to be cleaned/re-worded/modified. I started with the first 2 paragraphs in the history section. I was wondering what tools I can use to search for copy/vio content in the other sections to save me some time (other than google-ing it)? I fixed the first sentence and some others. I wrote on the page's talk page. I understand that initially I plagiarized, but almost all of that information has been changed into others words. So I don't understand how the finger is still pointing at me, plus I've changed the wording to be further from the text of the already revised edition of my original text. And also, we need more sources I'm trying to find books that talk about familial traditions in different cultures so that our article isn't based almost entirely off of one book as others have stated. Joint Custody Article

Well those little revisions actually took way longer than I thought haha. Anyhow, the key changes made were that the advantages/disadvantages were rephrased more professionally/objectively in terms of benefits and criticisms, I eliminated the two bad citations and replaced them with better citations, I fixed minor typo type issues I found in the references, I fixed some minor typo issues throughout the article, I fixed all page needed/author missing/etc. issues that I could see, and I fixed hyperlinking (I think haha). Anyhow if you get a chance could you look it over and let me know what I did wrong, as I undoubtedly made at least 1 mistake somewhere along the line there :(

I will probably bug you after class tomorrow as well, and I do still have to address the global issue of the article, but for not I THINK it should be good for DYK anyhow :)

Joint custody (United States)

1) The introductory section will still need a bit of adding to it, however, however other issues mentioned under this section have been addressed. 2) It had been shifted to joint custody (United States). 3) I have made some headway here, but these sections still need a bit more further work. 4) I am going to address the two sources that still are having page issues at some point today. 6) It has been successfully (I think) merged as of now. question: I was searching for black stone (Alhajar Al-Aswad) and could not find anything. first. then I opened the article "islam" and found both there....I had typed blackstone because in my native langue it comes to one noun and the arabic translation I picked up contains an additional a (in the article it is hajr) so, how do I improve this linking?

Unfortunately, there is not a rescue template variant for that situation. The proper thing to do would be to allow the ongoing merge discussion to come to a consensus. Japanese aircraft carrier Amagi is fine. Unless the editorial claim is particularly unique, ie, "Amagi flew hotdogs to the moon in 1975, moments before it fought the Super Space Battleship Yamato." or the equivalent kind of territory in the history of warships, I can't see a problem.
