Read your Teahouse message

I am a Teahouse host and did not feel it was appropriate to contradict another host in the Teahouse so I am leaving a message here to let you know that I am very interested in what you are doing to help new editors to read the signpost. Please give me more information if you can. Best Regards,

  • Hi Bfpage my personal view is that new editors might get more engaged with Wikipedia and the larger Wikimedia community if they at least skim the contents of the Signpost, so I would encourage Teahouse hosts to invite new users to subscribe to the Signpost. Additionally, WMF is finally working on an ancient idea to create an easy way for users to subscribe and unsubscribe from multiple newsletters. In your role in the Teahouse, I hope that you can encourage new users to subscribe to the Signpost. --Pine 00:14, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A new reference tool

Hello Books & Bytes subscribers. There is a new Visual Editor reference feature in development called Citoid. It is designed to "auto-fill" references using a URL or DOI. We would really appreciate you testing whether TWL partners' references work in Citoid. Sharing your results will help the developers fix bugs and improve the system. If you have a few minutes, please visit the testing page for simple instructions on how to try this new tool. Regards, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:48, 10 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Motivations for editing Wikipedia

Hi Pine, you had asked about Motivations for editing Wikipedia. I have collected graphs about that at de:user:Atlasowa/editor motivation, because it's an important question and almost everyone thinks about this at some time. Here are some answers:

Q5a. Percent who started contributing to Wikipedia due to the following reasons. (n=4,930) meta:Editor_Survey_2011/Editing_Activities.
"Reasons for continuing to contribute", WP Editor Survey April 2011
"The motivations of highly active Wikipedians", Wikimania 2012 talk
Q7c. Percent who believe they might become less active due to the listed reasons (n=4,930) meta:Editor_Survey_2011/Editing_Activities.
(Q25. Below is a list of levels of engagement editors have with Wikipedia. Please select ALL that apply; (base = 5805) "Levels of engagement for Wikipedia editors", (WMF Blog: Highlights from the December 2011 Wikipedia Editors Survey, May 25, 2012)
"What might make you contribute more?" Arabic Wikipedia Reader Survey 2012
"What stopped you from editing Wikipedia?" Philippines Wikipedia Reader Survey January 2012 (see also [1])
QD3b. What prompted you to set up a user account? n=6378. (RETROACTIVE justification!) (WMF Blog: Highlights from the December 2011 Wikipedia Editors Survey, May 10, 2012)
"Why create an account on Wikipedia?" (IMMEDIATE survey on the page that new users "land" after they have created their new accounts.) Results of the account creation survey, January/February 2011. This data has been gathered as part of the Account Creation Improvement Project
60% of editors whose edits had been reverted without any explanation said that this made them less likely to edit, while only 9% of editors whose edits had been reverted with explanation felt less inclined to edit. (Video by Barry Newstead (WMF) watch )
41% is the mean number of test editors who contributed after being reverted and warned. 9% is the mean percent of test editors who contributed after being reverted with no message" (Wikimania 2012 talk "Welcome to Wikipedia, now please go away: improving how we communicate with new editors". Steven Walling and Maryana Pinchuk, commons:File:Template_A-B_testing_presentation_deck.pdf)
B3. Have you EVER edited Wikipedia (for instance, fixed a mistake or changed spelling)? (Base: 4000) Results of Readers Survey 2011 (Only 6% of Wikipedia readers overall indicate that they have ever edited Wikipedia content. In the US: 31%; Germany: 12%; UK: 9% [2]).
B5. Why don't you edit Wikipedia? (Base: 3461) Readers Survey 2011: Reasons for not editing

Support request with team editing experiment project

Dear tech ambassadors, instead of spamming the Village Pump of each Wikipedia about my tiny project proposal for researching team editing (see here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Research_team_editing), I have decided to leave to your own discretion if the matter is relevant enough to inform a wider audience already. I would appreciate if you could appraise if the Wikipedia community you are more familiar with could have interest in testing group editing "on their own grounds" and with their own guidance. In a nutshell: it consists in editing pages as a group instead of as an individual. This social experiment might involve redefining some aspects of the workflow we are all used to, with the hope of creating a more friendly and collaborative environment since editing under a group umbrella creates less social exposure than traditional "individual editing". I send you this message also as a proof that the Inspire Campaign is already gearing up. As said I would appreciate of *you* just a comment on the talk page/endorsement of my project noting your general perception about the idea. Nothing else. Your contribution helps to shape the future! (which I hope it will be very bright, with colors, and Wikipedia everywhere) Regards from User:Micru on meta.

Thank you :)

Dear Pine I just realised (with a sense of shame) that I hadn't thanked you for the lovely kitten pic you sent me. Please forgive my bad manners - I didn't have time to respond when I opened the post but meant to do so asap, and somehow it just slipped away from me. I am so sorry. The photo was most welcome. Thank you. All the best Plutonium27 (talk) 12:08, 2 May 2015 (UTC) PS Re the Hillsborough links you sent - Was it your IP who sent me an explanation about the message I'd received re Hillsborough (anon but turned out to be from User::LynneFox)? If so, many thanks for that: I'd looked up my posts to see what may have caused her to contact me but couldn't see anything relevant and so I was quite puzzled. JFT98.[reply]

Hi Plutonium27 I'm glad that you liked the kitten. I don't recall contacting you about Hillsborough or anything else, although if this happened awhile ago then I may have forgotten. --Pine 21:51, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2015 May newsletter

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by India The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Belarus Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Language corrections

Hello Pine, perhaps you remember me from WMCON15, I held a talk on 100wikidays. I just finished Rila Monastery Nature Park. Would you throw a glance on my translation from Bulgarian, because nature topics are definitely not the area of my expertise, but I happened to write an article on a nature park. Thank you very much in advance! --Lord Bumbury (talk) 00:10, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Lord Bumbury, I made a few changes to the article. The article is mostly comprehensible in English. I am unclear on what you mean by "In 2000 it was extracted from its territory". Do you mean that some of the land was given back to the monastery? --Pine 23:25, 3 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • Hi, Pine! Thank you for making the article better. You understand correctly - some land from the National Park Rila was given to the monastery. --Lord Bumbury (talk) 07:11, 4 June 2015 (UTC).[reply]
  • Hi Lord Bumbury, I made a few more edits. Please take a look and let me know what you think. --Pine 07:45, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Travelogue

Hi, Pine,
I saw your Signpost article and I was wondering if there were any demographic snapshots of who went to this conference...how many people from the U.S. and other countries, % of women attending, other stats like that. The report is otherwise very comprehensive but it would be nice to see if the people who attended reflected the make-up of editors of the WMF projects. Maybe someone at WMF has this data. Liz Read!
