I've been chuckling over your user name for days, having seen it recently for the first time. Frankly, I'm jealous that I didn't think of one that's as good. Also love the comment on "its" vs. "it's" below. I read a similar complaint some time ago regarding a native German speaker arguing with a native English speaker over an English word that, even when given dictionary proof it didn't exist, was not willing to give it up. G'day from Oz; I sometimes dabble in fixing typos and spelling mistakes, but compared to you I am just a dilettante. I started because of my own finger dyslexia in typing "aircrfat" instead of "aircraft" and usually just search for mis-spellings of "aircraft" ("aircrafts" is like fingernails down a blackboard to me), or instances of "reserach" (a mis-spelling that I have corrected several hundred times in my partner's Doctoral thesis).

I think you have the wrong name

I never edited the wording in any of the sections to the Hell's Kitchen (Season 5) page. I only worked on the color scheme for the table. If you look at the previous version before you undid it, It says Luigilos made those changes. Script

Hi. I am in the process of developing a script to automatically correct common misspellings in articles. The initial goal is for users to have a button at the top of the article which will open an edit window and do a search/replace to correct common misspellings. When the script completes, it then shows the changes and allows the editor to decide if the changes were correct. The goal is to have as few falsely corrected entries, so some of the entries on WP:LCM wouldn't be added. If you are interested in trying it out, let me know. My initial prototype only has entries from the "A" page. There are probably some minor bugs in there as well, but it won't commit any changes without approval. The script is at User:Symplectic Map/spell.js and you just have to include it in your monobook.js file, e.g., User:Symplectic Map/monobook.js. If you are using something other than the standard theme, it would have to be included there instead. It should work on Firefox and Google Chrome. I haven't tested Internet Explorer. Bill, I love the copyedit you did! Just one question, in the discography section, it looks like you made the title of the first item in the discography italicised. Yes, that was deliberate. The Wiki style is to put names of songs in "quotes" and titles of albums (as well as books, movies, and radio or TV shows) in italics. I started to do that with the list, but then realized I couldn't do it accurately since I wasn't familiar with his material. So hopefully someone better acquainted can pick it up from there. Spelling

Australian rock

I have seen your edits on the Australian rock page and do not feel that information on hip hop/rap music and electronic music should be in this article because the rock music, electronic and rap are all different. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Australian_rock

Big Four

Was this just a massive error? Your edit summary claimed you were undoing the last edit (which doesn't make sense to begin with, because the last five edits were just adding and tweaking a single entry) but what you actually did was remove half the content, from different sections of the page, with no apparent rationale. As I recall, I originally hit undo just to remove the "grunge" entry. There doesn't need to be an actual article called Big Four (X), just an article that says "these things are called the big four." For example, thrash metal says such-and-such bands are considered the Big Four of thrash metal. I went through every single entry when I cleaned up the page a couple months ago, so unless the linked article has been edited since then to remove the "Big Four" reference, I think all the entries are good. Easiest thing to do in those situations is to go back to the last named account, especially if the named account's edit is a vandalism reversion. That way you're not constantly tidying up. Hi there! I notice that you've recently done some copy editing and typo fixing on the Younger Than Yesterday article. Thank you for cleaning up some of my silly mistakes. While I have your attention, I also have a couple of general copy editing questions. In the first sentence of the YTY article, is there any reason to have the word "see" in the parenthesis italicised? Another copy editing Wikipedian formatted it like this and I've tended to follow suit on other articles but I don't really understand why this word needs to be italicised.

I don't understand it either; it seems to make that one word stand out for no particular reason. Looking through some articles dealing with albums by other artists (David Crosby's solo albums, for instance), it appears more common to leave off the italics or to simply eliminate the parenthesized phrase by linking the year of release to the corresponding "year in music" article; something such as "was released in February 1967".Mild Bill Hiccup (talk) 22:38, 6 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for taking a first look at this article - it's very helpful of you. I assume that you’re going to take a look at the “Release” and “Legacy” sections at a later time? Since leaving my above message I've learned from the copy editing Wikipedian in question that the italicizing of "see" or "see also" comes from a particular style book and there's also examples of it here, here, here and here. Oh, and just so you know, I’ve reinstated the parenthesized 1968 in music because that's the correct way to format such links in music articles - piped links are discouraged under the music article style guidelines - see Wikipedia:WikiProject_Music/MUSTARD#Internal_links. My second question again relates to the first sentence of the article: should "The Byrds" have a comma before and after it, like - "Younger Than Yesterday is the fourth album by the American rock band, The Byrds, and was released in February 1967 on Columbia Records." The comma before the name shouldn't be used because it would separate the name from the words being used to describe it and would make it sound like The Byrds were the only American rock band. Well, I have seen cases where there were a lot more than two "last warnings", since the warning templates max out at level four. After that, I suppose it becomes a matter of how many more edits the vandal is willing and able to make before the final "final warner" is an administrator. Vandalism?

Not sure what passes for your definition of vandalism. The changes I made to Greek and Latin roots in English article were simply for easier reading. No information was changed. At one time, there was a description on the page that said all the Greek roots were in a blue, the Latin ones were normal background color. Not sure why this was ever done. The page itself has a column listing either Greek or Latin, so there is no reason for some background color to identify the root language. Besides that, the blue is more distracting than pleasing, and is out of the ordinary compared to other Wikipedia glossaries that I have seen.

Over two years ago, I made a number of additions from A to C in this article, and was going to try and complete much of the missing information. I never really had time to get back to it. The article is largely completed now, but the blue background that remains is really a relic of the article when it was still being developed. For that reason there is no reason to keep it, and notice the article now does not even state why the Greek roots are all in blue. The blue to me is a rather un-necessary attempt to jazz up the visual appearance. I like color, but I think it is not needed in this type of article. Principal and principle

In your recent edits to various articles (Nesanel Quinn, Jan Wyck, Shmuel Rozovsky, Department of Computer Systems and Networking, SLIIT) you confused "principle" and "principal". "Principal" is the leader of a school, while "principle" means the main. Thanks for the grammar edits made to Kelly Rowland (album). However in this revision you incorrectly tagged a sentence in the lead section (first paragraph, list sentence) with the {{fact}} tag. This is incorrect. The material is sourced later on in the "Themes and Concept" section as demonstrated here. It would be appreciated in the future if you could be more careful in reading ALL of the information in an article before tagging things in the lead as unsourced. Per WP:lead section things which are already sourced do not require referencing in the lead section.

I have marked you as a reviewer

I have added the "reviewers" property to your user account. This property is related to the Pending changes system that is currently being tried. This system loosens page protection by allowing anonymous users to make "pending" changes which don't become "live" until they're "reviewed". However, logged-in users always see the very latest version of each page with no delay. A good explanation of the system is given in this image. The system is only being used for pages that would otherwise be protected from editing.

If there are "pending" (unreviewed) edits for a page, they will be apparent in a page's history screen; you do not have to go looking for them. There is, however, a list of all articles with changes awaiting review at Special:OldReviewedPages. Because there are so few pages in the trial so far, the latter list is almost always empty. The list of all pages in the pending review system is at Special:StablePages.

To use the system, you can simply edit the page as you normally would, but you should also mark the latest revision as "reviewed" if you have looked at it to ensure it isn't problematic. Edits should generally be accepted if you wouldn't undo them in normal editing: they don't have obvious vandalism, personal attacks, etc. If an edit is problematic, you can fix it by editing or undoing it, just like normal. You are permitted to mark your own changes as reviewed.

The "reviewers" property does not obligate you to do any additional work, and if you like you can simply ignore it. The expectation is that many users will have this property, so that they can review pending revisions in the course of normal editing. It may be a good idea to leave more informative edit summaries. Removal of Mizzou scarab's external links

Hi Bill.
Just wondering why you reverted the external map links user Mizzou scarab placed on Lancaster, Missouri, Lawson, Missouri and others. I think this is some sort of quasi-official type project, maybe in the Library Sciences program, at Mizzou. Another party (username kelli.hansen) has been adding them to some of the other northern Missouri town & county Wikis I monitor for vandalism. Is the link against some Wiki policy I'm not aware of? Just to provide some clarification: (username Sector001) is correct. I and (username mizzou.scarab) have been adding links to the pages as a semi-official project meant to increase access to the maps, which are quite valuable as historical documents. The Sanborn collection at the University of Missouri is the most complete in the state, plus many of the maps have been digitized and are freely available online in the University of Missouri Digital Library. We believe that these maps provide a resource that would be useful and interesting to most people who come to Wikipedia seeking information about Missouri cities.

Our rationale for linking to the general Sanborn Maps collection page rather than the digital library is twofold: 1) because maps in the collection produced after 1923 were not digitized, and therefore the general collection page contains information not included in the digital library, and 2) because there is currently no way to link to individual cities in the collection page. However, if you scroll down on this page, on the right-hand side you will notice a box that says "Inventory" with links to "Missouri Cities A-D", etc. Clicking through those links provides information on the exact holdings for individual cities (but it doesn't provide information on what Sanborn Maps are and how to use them - another reason for linking to the general collection page first).

Hopefully this additional information helps to shed more light on what we are doing. I'm sure that making library resources easier for people to find - especially freely available online resources - would be a goal most Wikipedia authors and editors share. In re IP 70.162.155.41: All IPs for most schools in the Valley even will show up through Cox, especially if they're small schools. Seton Catholic Preparatory High School's known major IP is listed under Cox (it's 98.191.99.249) – as a student there, the edit history correlates properly with likely items from the school.

I'd assign it to PCDS given the history of edits to that article in particular, not to Cox. Larger districts, e.g. Gilbert Public Schools, do have their own server systems. 70.162.x.x addresses do tend to be Cox Phoenix though – for a time, even my IP was that (see when I forgot to log in and still edited: Special:Contributions/70.176.127.235. Second - do you think it would be okay to cite Glen Cavaliero in The Supernatural and English Fiction for the use of "supernaturalist". It is a term he uses in the book, the thinking being (I assume) that "supernatural fiction" is a popularly-used term, but technically incorrect because it suggests that the fiction itself is supernatural. Cavaliero offers the term "supernaturalist" in the same way one would use the term "realist" to describe fiction which was realistic, but not actually real (ie factual.) As reviewing administrator, I found it was easy to determine he meets WP:AUTHOR because of the film. Ialso added the rest of his books, from Worldcat. BTW, that article on the film is pretty skimpy, and it might help to add some of the other information in imdb. I've explained things to the over-eager new page patroller. I see you reverted some of Jpr127's edits in which he added links to webpages at the Autry National Center.[3][4][5][6] His edits caught me eye too, but on review I thought they looked like worthwhile additions. The links are relevant to the subjects (they go to pages on firearms owned by the subjects which are now in a museum). The webpages are high quality sources, and are not commercial or promotional. GNU Octave page change

Hello. You edited the GNU Octave page and removed a link to a web interface that I added. To help me understand the rationale, could you tell me why you did not apply the same principle and removed the other items on the same list, specifically, the link to Online LaTeX and Octave Editor, Online access to Octave and MathCloud? In case it was due to language that was not neutral, I've added the link again using the same neutral language as described the other items on the same list. In particular, I was surprised that all 3 of the other sites had advertisements on their pages. If you decided to keep those 3 sites which have advertisements, then, I hope you would consider that it is in the public interest to know that an alternative exists without any advertisements. I noticed you've been deleting some links from SAH-archipedia, and I've reverted your deletion at least once. I was actually quite pleased when I first saw one of these links - the info looked to be very high quality and (in Pennsylvania) was written by George Thomas - the top architectural historian in the area. Obviously the SAH folks (if it is them) haven't approached this in the best way, but I'll ask that you not WP:Bite.

I don't want to claim ownership of these articles, but I will say that I'm one of the most active editors on articles in SE Pennsylvania on historical buildings (see my user page). Or you might check with other users like User:BoringHistoryGuy or maybe User:Ruhrfisch.

I'm informed by Marcus Qwertyus, who I thought had done the speedy to the lower-case version that's there now, that it was you who moved them. You have ignored the citations and ignored the context of the article and the previous evolution of its title; these are official and treaty-defined proper names (in both USGS and BC Names/CGNDB) and that's why it's titled the way it was, and why "border" is repeated twice in the same title (first is capitailazed as part of proper names/definition). This is not a list of peaks that happen to be on the border, this is a list of the peaks that are the border. This should have been an RM, if at all, and I'm not an admin so can't reverse your unwarranted change. Please read cites and consult authors of the article (I'm not the only one) before doing such things again. Does this mean that the overwhelming more common construction "a range of size are available" is incorrect? I'm trying to work out if this is one of those cases where American and British English vary, or if I'm just wrong! Thank you for your two edits of List of islands of New Caledonia. I didn't realize when I made my second edit that anyone else had been by since my first edit. In my first edit I changed "New Caledonia is divided into 4 Archipelagos" to "New Caledonia is comprised of 4 Archipelagos". You changed this to "New Caledonia comprises four archipelagos". I do not object to your change, but please be aware that my usage was correct. This is from Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary (1989):

comprise ... vt ... 3 : COMPOSE, CONSTITUTE <a misconception about what comprises a literary generation —William Styron> <about 8 percent of our military forces are comprised of women —Jimmy Carter>

usage Although it has been in use since the late 18th century, sense 3 is still attacked as wrong. Why it has been singled out is not clear, but until comparatively recent times it was found chiefly in scientific or technical writing rather than belles lettres. Our current evidence shows a slight shift in usage: sense 3 is somewhat more frequent in recent literary use than the earlier senses. You should be aware, however, that if you use sense 3 you may be subject to criticism for doing so, and you may want to choose a safer synonym such as compose or make up.

Hiya MBH - Thanks for picking up my typos (Blinded by authorship, I hadn't noticed them! I always notice in other's work!) and I do agree that reducing repeated full names to just the surname is a good policy (so I've continued it in an edit sweep). Trimming the headings to remove the redundant 'the' is good so I've completed that job. Personally, I don't like 'sentence' case in headings and much prefer 'menu' case (all the main words capitalised). But if that is policy, then I won't pick a fight and I've changed all my headings throughout to 'sentence'. Presume this is another American / British thing? Italics for words-as-words

In plant articles, like Pumpkin, it is normal to use quotation marks rather than italics as per MOS:WORDSASWORDS: "When italics could cause confusion, quotation marks instead may be used to distinguish words as words." This is because italics mark scientific names. I don't think the change you made at Pumpkin matters, but elsewhere it might create confusion for readers not familiar with the scientific names involved. Chichewa tones

Thank you for your corrections of typos in Chichewa tones. I don't know I failed to notice them myself!

I note that in one or two places you have changed e.g. 'p.95' to 'p. 95' with a space, and at others you have changed e.g. '95-6' to '95–6' with an n-dash. But in most other places you have left the references as they were, so that the style is now slightly inconsistent. How important is this? Is the matter important enough to go through the whole article and change all the hyphens to n-dashes?

In the article I adopted the style of writing the names of tenses with a capital letter (e.g. 'Perfect tense'), you have changed in one or two places to a small letter (but leaving most of them with a capital). Is there a ruling on this? Both styles are possible. For example, Bernard Comrie in his book on 'Tense' (CUP) uses small letters, but in his book on 'Aspect', he writes tense names with a capital letter. I don't suppose that most people who read the books notice this; the main thing being that it is consistent within the book. I´m just a German guy, pretty new in the English Wikipedia and I noticed your recent edit in Commonly misspelled English words and saw by chance that you are interested in spelling mistakes and also speak a bit German (which is great, why did you learn it?).

I just translated my German text and it should sound "English" and not "German English"... Sometimes I find it hard to write the right because the languages are so similar (many "falsche Freunde"... Btw: We hosted some Americans and they said "it sucks" in German which sounds just funny...). Of course you could edit in my user page directly.

I don't think there is anything wrong with my grammar (I could be wrong). In fact, I would suggest my version has a slightly higher 'reading level'. With the advent of the Simple English version of Wikipedia, is it necessary to 'dumb down' this version?

I was always taught that using 'but', or even 'and' etc, was poor and that searching for alternatives to those words made for improved writing (and more enjoyable reading).

Hey Mild Bill, you've edited a few of the articles that I've worked on over the years and I've always been impressed with your copyediting skills. I wondered if you could take a look at the discussion between myself and another editor here -- he seems to think that the word "noted", when used to express a critic's opinion, as in, "Band biographer John Doe has noted that the album is the pinnacle of the band's sonic experimentation", is non-neutral POV and wants to change it to "stated" or "remarked". Myself, I've always understood the word "noted" in this context to be virtually synonymous with "remark" and have provided links to dictionary.com that appear to back this up. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but I'd appreciate you taking a look at it and perhaps weighing in on the discussion to help clarify this issue. Hi Mild Bill Hiccup, Just wondering how you see linking to Spotify as "Wikipedia is not a vehicle for soapboxing, advertising or promotion"? As Spotify is the ONLY source that I know of online to legally listen to music without owning it, I though a link for a reader of the Wiki page to use to hear the music would be a useful service. Is that promotional? Does that promote Spotify? Yes. But does referencing an artical in the "The Wall Street Journal" promote the "Wall Street Journal" ? The same goes for your charge of Advertising. Because I say the music is on Spotify, are you implying that is Advertising? And finally your charge of "soapbox". This list of songs were the hits in Ireland for a certain year. That is fact. The playlist in Spotify is a factual list of songs that were hits in Ireland for a certain year with a note saying what ones are not available on Spotify. There is no expression of opinions been made here. They are all facts. That is not my understanding of "soapbox".

On reviewing the Editing Guidelines, the only Editing Guideline that can be applied to this link to Spotify is "external links to websites that require registration or a paid subscription to view should be avoided". WP:ELREG So if you are going to use an Editing Guideline to remove my edit, please use an appropriate one. But in my defense I would say that Spotify is the only legal source I know of that I can use to link to the music.

I just tripped across a bit of spam that you inadvertently added to an existing citation in this edit on June 30, 2019. You added, as the title of a cited source, "DocSend - Simple, intelligent, modern content sending". That is not the title of the cited source and has nothing to do with the article about Kahlil Byrd. The citation was a duplicate, so I deleted it. My guess is that you followed a dead link and that DocSend, instead of the usual "Page not found" error message, chose to advertise its services. That is the kind of spammy thing that DocSend would do. And, to my amazement, that bit of spam survived for over 28 months.
