Thanks for your help with Ernest Haskell article

Dear Matthew, Thanks for your helpful comments on my article about artist Ernest Haskell. I think I have fixed all issues, including adding links and pipe-links, except I am still kind of intimidated by doing references. Which section in that link pertains to my case? Thanks for your time, Ivy Chetwynd (Abigail) Ivychetwynd (talk) 15:43, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

No worries Abigail. Probably the main thing you want to read is Help:Referencing_for_beginners#Manual_referencing. It's not so confusing once you give it a shot, so just take your time, and use the "Preview" button to see if you've got it right, and once you get the hang of it it'll be easy to fix the footnotes. Take a look at how I did it; note in Read mode where the footnotes I fixed (all #1) appear as little blue numbers, that match up with the blue number under References. Take a look in Read mode, then go into Edit mode and you can see how I coded in the footnote.
Let me know if you try it a bit and are still having trouble. I'm going to go ahead and Publish your draft, since the content meets standards, and since there's a backlog I don't want to hold the approval up just over formatting. MatthewVanitas (talk) 21:35, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
By the way, my comments to you are now on the Talk page of the published article, for reference. You'll also need to apply WP:Categories to your now-published article; not broad ones like "Art" but specific ones like "Category:American lithographers"; not "American people" but rather Category:People from Woodstock, Connecticut, etc. In each category you should be as far down into the subcategories as applies to your subject. There's also a little "Persondata" form at the end of the article (visible only in Edit mode) to fill out for metadata purposes.
I know all the Wiki stuff is a bit overwhelming at first, but just take your time, and ask for help from the volunteers at WP:Teahouse if need be, and pretty quickly it becomes second nature. MatthewVanitas (talk) 21:38, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

Thank you Matthew!!! Great news, and I will keep working on it. Best wishes, AbigailIvychetwynd (talk) 22:13, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

(Sunday November 23) Thanks again Matthew! I did get far enough to use the correct reference system on one book(when I returned to it someone else had finished the job. I will save my notes anyway!), and I added some Categories after checking what other artists had. Will attend to the other issues as soon as I can. This has been a fascinating experience and I appreciate your encouragement very much. The relatives of Haskell are happy about it, and we will tell the art people(curators and authors etc.) The fact that there is now a nice Wikipedia entry about Ernest Haskell will go a long way to help efforts to call attention to this wonderful artist who often gets overlooked, in my opinion for 2 reasons: early death (age 49) and not being part of the "modern" movement although some of them were his friends. Best wishes, AbigailIvychetwynd (talk) 18:17, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

Hello again, thanks for the "polishing". I see why you made a couple of changes! Best, AbigailIvychetwynd (talk) 05:09, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

15:54:05, 1 December 2014 review of submission by Njuhasz

Hello,

I am a social media and marketing professional for OFS company. I was given a task of creating Wikipedia page for my company. Can you tell me what exactly wrong with OFS page format, content or any information I supplied for this page. I can be contacted by email at redacted

Sincerely,

Natasha Juhasz

Njuhasz (talk) 15:54, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello Njuhasz, to be honest your draft is completely not what we need in a number of ways. I'd strongly suggest you read the following guidelines that explain the situation:
  • WP:Conflict of interest, WP:Advertising and WP:Neutrality: draft has major issues with being blatantly written for the company, not about the company. Wikipedia isn't LinkedIn, or some place to share information with your customers, we aren't just webhosting. We're a compilation of objective articles about things that uninvolved people find significant about the subject, not what the subject thinks matters (which frankly we don't care about). Note of course that this means that if there is any negative information about your company out there in the news, it will inevitably end up in the article.
  • WP:Notability (companies): any article about a company must show that the company is seriously discussed by uninvolved people. Not their own website, not PR fluff, not simple corporate listings. What we need is serious discussion of the company and why it matters from news articles, trade journals, academic articles, published books, etc.
Please take a glance at these guidelines and it should explain it pretty well. MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:53, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi, this Draft came up in a search, have moved it to article space. Apologies if that's too early but it looks fine. If not please move it back, cheers. In ictu oculi (talk) 22:50, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

Citizen Action of New York Stub

Hello Matthew,

I have a wide variety of online sources that mention Citizen Action of New York, but it is hard to find any sources that chronicle an objective history of the organization. I am going to revise my submission and include some of the sources (mainly local news articles) that mention Citizen Action of New York and the type of community events they are involved with. Hopefully they will suffice as eligible sources.

Thanks,

Michael — Preceding unsigned comment added by Colem2 (talkcontribs) 17:05, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

Colem2, have you also checked out GoogleBooks for books that mention the organization? Also a good thing to cite. Note that http://reftag.appspot.com can also instantly turn any GoogleBooks URL into a full Wikipedia footnote. Hope this helps. MatthewVanitas (talk) 18:23, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

Hey Matthew! Thanks for your input.

I saw that you had looked over the Wikipedia page I had submitted, and I would like to thank you for your time and suggested revisions.

I am still a bit of a newbie when it comes to putting up Wikipedia pages, so please forgive my ignorance on the subject.

Per your suggestions, I have added external references to my Step Afrika! article (1 from a book, 2 from major newspapers [LA Times, Wash Post], and 4 from other reliable external sources [WETA, Citizen {South African newspaper}, National Public Radio, and the magazine called The Source].

I have also reviewed the 'golden rule' for wikipedia and read up on what constitutes an effective reference.

I think that I have made this page a lot less 'about us' and have instead included concise, notable information that is more encyclopedic in nature.

Do you have any other suggestions as to how I can make this article more aligned to the philosophy of Wikipedia before I resubmit it?

Thanks again for your help !

Regarding the Step Afrika! Draft

Hey Matthew -

Thank you for your input on my previous submission. I realize now that in reaching out to you previously, I had forgot to sign my post… sorry about that.

I have re-submitted my draft of Step Afrika! again Draft:Step_Afrika! and was wondering if you could look at it to see if I had modified it to make it more notable and encyclopedic.

Does the exclamation point at the end of this Draft's title make it difficult to link or direct to the page?

I have stripped down the language a lot and I wanted to see if it needed further work to make it up to Wiki standards. I have included a lot of references from neutral sources - are these references strong or could they be better?

Thanks again for helping me with this process. Barrett Kinsella (talk) 18:44, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello Barrett Kinsella, I've approved your draft after removing some promotional material. If you are tied to the group, I suggest that you refrain from further editing the page except to remove any vandalism, so that the page can maintain objectivity as it is edited by uninvolved parties. One exception would be that adding photos would be great, and/or adding the official logo of the group. To add the logo (which is assuredly copyrighted) follow the instructions at WP:Logo so it can be displayed without damaging its copyright, and for photos of the troupe performing, ideally any photo should be uploaded by the person who took the photo, who alone is qualified to release it under Creative Commons and upload it to Wikimedia Commons for display. See WP:Images for guidance.
I'd only looked briefly at the article before to note it needed work, but at a finer reading I see that these folks are in DC, and come to think of it I think I attended one of their performances earlier this year over on H Street, one where the African DNA company did a surprise unveiling of one of the performer's genetic background, etc. Overall good show, it's just that we have very high standards for neutrality for artists/music/groups to prevent every garage band out there from demanding its own page, so your adding some news coverage, academic coverage, etc was a necessary step to publish the article. Nice work, and again I suggest you help with the visuals but avoid letting members of the group get too involved in the page lest it start drifting back towards promotion. I hope you'll stick around Wikipedia and help improve our coverage. In particular, if you or friends are DC-based, check out for pages that need a quick photo snapped to illustrate them. Thanks for your work! MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:01, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Hey there! Thank you for all the help! I made changes to the article based on your instructions, and I will look into uploading a logo in the near future. I will try to bolster the images on this page by reaching out to the people we have used as photographers in the past to see if they can upload onto this page - that's a great idea. And as a final note, I will actively discourage people that I work with from making edits to the SA! page.

Appreciate it!Barrett Kinsella (talk) 19:26, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello! I just uploaded the Step Afrika! logo onto the Wiki Commons and have linked it to the Step Afrika! page, but I was a bit shaky on what 'fair/free use' tags I should include … After uploading the logo, I got a message saying that the image met 'criteria for speedy deletion' :

"The given reason is: This file is copyrighted and not published under a free license, and the uploader asserts that the usage of this file is fair use, but fair use claims are not permitted on Commons. This file may be deleted without further notice. If the project that this file is to be used on allows fair use, and its usage would comply with the project's appropriate exemptions, please upload it locally."

Was wondering if you could give me some advice as to what details and tags are needed in order to keep this image up on the page.

When I added the image, I uploaded it as a copyright holder (the SA! Mktg. Department)… should I have uploaded it as a non-copyright holder?

Thanks  ! Barrett Kinsella (talk) 20:28, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello Barrett Kinsella! Ah, photos that you personally hold the right to and want to release as Creative Commons (like a more complex Public Domain), those you upload to Wikimedia Commons. Logos, however, clearly you don't want to surrender the copyright to, those have a separate process where you can display them on Wikipedia without giving up the copyright. See WP:Logo for how to do that. However at least now you know the 'Commons procedure for next time you want to upload personal photos of a subject that you are okay releasing the rights to. Logos though, clearly not something to release the rights to, and Fair Use is done through Wikipedia directly, vice the Commons. MatthewVanitas (talk) 23:04, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Dear Matthew:

The Super Title to my article, the one that's used at wikipedia to search for the article, is misspelled and I don't know how to get it fixed. The article is about Joseph Vaudan. The super title reads J-O-E-S-P-H Vaudan. Who can correct that?

Professor Stefan Winter states in his book The Shiite Emirates of Ottoman Syria (MID 17th –MID 18th Century),page 236:

“The abrupt disappearance of the Harfush emirate left the shiite community of baalbek bereft of any anciently – rooted , indigenous social leadership , making it that much more of likely venue for the rise of foreign-inspired ideological mass movements such as communism, Nasirism ext…in Lebanon’s tumultuous 20th century” I kindly advice you to read the above mentioned book, where I’m sure that this book will change all the miss concept of the history of the Ottoman in Baalback and Bekaa Families, bearing in mind that Harfush’s family ruled Baalback and Bekaa for 350 years.

Györgyné Pruzsinszki, your draft was not in line to be reviewed, so I have put it back in line for review, and will neaten it up some, but I will not be the one giving it the next review, I want someone new to look at it for new perspective. Regarding WikiProject Hungary, there are some comments for your question about Erno Polgar, no those are not credible in the slightest. Having friends and colleagues who know nothing about Wikipedia drop in to insist Notability is not helpful to your cause, especially as they don't even know basic Wikipedia things like how to start a new paragraph.

Drifting Sun

Hi Matthew

I have just noticed that my article has been refused. I don't really understand why, this is an article about a genuine music band (mine), presenting original music (mine), which has been written, record, produced, released, and copyright lawfully. I have not stolen any of it, nor have I infringed any copyright laws, and the sources I cited as to genuine and independant reviews and articles etc from magazines etc talking about my music are all verifiable.

Could you then explain on what basis my article has been refused? — Preceding unsigned comment added by DriftingSunWeb (talkcontribs) 21:37, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello DriftingSunWeb, a couple problems, but first and largest: like as explicitly stated on your Talk page, the exact reason your draft was deleted was because it appears to be copied from http://www.driftingsun-music.com/the-story/. That right there is 100% a reason we have to delete something. As far as we're concerned, you're just "some guy" and appear to be ripping off Drifting Sun's presumably-copyrighted website. Now, if you happen to be the author/owner of that site, and want to use those materials, you would have to explicitly donate them, not just by saying "I donate" buy by actually filling out a form at WP:OTRS which proves you're the copyright holder and release those materials under WP:Creative Commons.
That said, don't bother donating the materials, since a proper article is way different than an "About Us!!!" website, so there's no point submitting that writeup anyway. A proper band article is based on third-party sources like news reports, formal reviews, etc. Frankly, we don't care in the slightest what the band puts on its website, since anyone can make up anything for their website. What we do care is the facts as verified by, say, the LA Times, A Brief History of Rock (or some such published book), Spin Magazine, Pitchfork, the BBC, etc. We can only accept facts verified by outside authorities. Your personal knowledge of the band is totally inadmissible, because again a band member could just make up whatever facts.
Further, I'd really suggest not writing about your own band, because as you see it's very hard to write about yourself objectively, and non-objective articles are deleted on sight. Also, to be frank, if your band is famous and significant, why is nobody else writing an article about it? The Rolling Stones didn't write their own article, see what I mean? In any case, you're not 100% banned from writing about your own band, just discouraged, and also experience has shown us reviewers that most musicians are literally incapable of writing an article that is not obviously a promo. But if you want to give a shot at writing an objective article that actually passes scrutiny, see WP:Notability (music) for the ironclad sourcing requirements. I mean, literally, seriously, read that guideline carefully because I can about guarantee you that anyone Declining your draft is doing so based on a close reading/knowledge of that exact guideline. Hope this answers your question! MatthewVanitas (talk) 22:00, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi Matthew

Ok, well yes it is my own band, I own all the copyrights to the material I have mentioned in the article, and yes I can prove the ownership of my own material, through copyright references etc. I have also submitted genuine and independant reviews from magazines who have written articles about my albums (refer to the links I have included in my draft). What else can I provide to prove that this is a genuine article and that people are writing about the band? — Preceding unsigned comment added by DriftingSunWeb (talkcontribs) 22:12, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Ewan McLennan's Page

Hi Matthew,

All seems to have gone quiet with this submission. If it's in the queue for review and hasn't been looked at yet, then that's fine. However, if it's waiting for something from me, I don't know what it is. Ewan has emailed to say the pictures I uploaded could be used, and as 3 of them were album covers they should be fine anyway.

Is anything waiting for me, or is it just queued up?

Thanks, Naganata

Naganata (talk) 13:53, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

Hello Naganata, you are still in queue, we're just really backed up. In the meantime, just carefully measure your draft up against WP:Notability (music) to ensure your subject clearly meets the standards.
Regarding images: whoa, hold up. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously, as we use WP:Creative Commons licensing. So "sure, go ahead and use X" is not at all sufficient, would get an image deleted immediately. To be able to use the artist's photo or album cover, he would need to fill out a WP:OTRS for explicitly releasing the images to Creative Commons. However, clearly he doesn't want to do that for his copyrighted album covers, making them nearly Public Domain. And before you ask the common question, no "sure you guys can use it, but only for Wikipedia, not for anyone else" is not a legit licensing option, that's not how WP works.
Unless explicitly expired copyright or released in the public domain, album covers can only be used under very strict WP:Fair use criteria, such as a small, low-res image only on the specific article for that specific album (not a sub-section like yours). Put album covers out of your mind for now, focus on getting the draft published. If the draft publishes, then you can solicit photos of the artist, from photo creators/owners willing to release them under WP:OTRS. So yeah, really strict photo policy because we respect copyrights so don't want millions of people using an image that the owner hasn't explicitly released. Hope this helps! MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:24, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Matthew,

I've tweaked the article a little. When I said Ewan had granted permission for the album covers, he did it via an email to the address specified in the Consent page. No problem though, as you say, we'll worry about that once the article is published.

Thanks again, Dave

Hi Matthew,

The article about Ewan McLennan has been rejected owing to copyright issues. Where did I go wrong? I'm ok with the photo and album covers not being there from the start, and all of the links are to other web sites reviewing his albums and concerts.

Any advice would be appreciated, as it's a shame that Ewan doesn't have an entry when he clearly passes the 'Notability' test you have.

Draft: Chaheru

Hi Mathew, were you able to get this article? I had sent an e-mail with questions etc. but have not heard back. Any feedback would be useful to improve the article and have it accepted.

Many thanks, in advance. kinder deo (talk) 06:30, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello kinder deo, I don't accept emails for an issue that can be dealt with publicly on a Talk page instead, so if you have questions, unless they're extremely sensitive for personal reasons, please just post questions here on my Talk page. MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:41, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

Draft: Chaheru

Hi Mathew,

I created a new article and have submitted it for a review. I do not know if it complies with all the guidelines and would like to improve the article and have it accepted. I would like to have someone look at the article and advise. This is the first article on the Chaheru village and not much has been recorded and there are very few references available. The content came from a retired teacher of the same village.

My concerns are Grammer, References, chronolgy, and general content: In the article;
1.Reference 5 and 6 deliver the same point. Ref 5 is the actual page from a book, and ref 6 is the book. How should this be stated? Do I need ref 6 at all?
2.Reference 8 is a page out of a book, but the book has not been listed. Should the book be listed as a reference?
3.Reference 10 is the actual report and ref 11 is the url for a government site to deliver the report. The report is in "Punjabi" language and justifies my point. Is this o.k.? Do I need to have the url reference at all?
4. Under the section: Migration to Other Countries. Previously nothing has been recorded and the year of migration, which came from a Villager, can not be justified. How should this be handled? Would the indication of timing in the form of decades e.g. early/mid 1950's, work? Would a general reference of timing from countries like USA, Canada work, as to when a religious sect migrated.
5. Under the section: Famous viewpoints, I reference "Lovely University...". This is a private university with 25k students. Reference 17 is the URL for the university. Should the url be included in the article?
6. Are there any references missing? Should a section be removed if there are no references?
7. Are there any grammatical errors in the article that I should correct?
8. Any other suggestions to improve the article?
I would really appreciate if you can assist in this regard.
Thanks. Kinder Deo. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.114.89.129 (talk) 16:20, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Harp may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s and 1 "{}"s likely mistaking one for another. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:

Hi MV, thanks for your timely action on my submission. I guessed that it would be rejected as soon as I saw another user had submitted the article. At this point what I need to know what the accepted protocol is for integrating the information I found into the prior article. Do I need to contact the original user or do I simply hit "edit" and let the process take care of itself? Thanks for your help, 'ppreciate it mucho.Tabangado (talk) 02:41, 21 December 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for December 25

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Sheepshead (game), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Wisconsin Dells. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Otherwise your corrections are clear and I should be able to make them today (Fri)

17:41:26, 27 December 2014 review of submission by Therealex

Therealex (talk) 17:41, 27 December 2014 (UTC) Thank you for reviewing my submission for Ray Alexander, musician.

As his ensemble for the recording of Rain In June included many notables found here on Wikipedia (Kenny Barron, Harvie Swartz (also on Cloud Patterns), Oliver Jackson, etc.) I thought it would meet requirement #6 (Is an ensemble which contains two or more independently notable musicians, or is a musician who has been a reasonably prominent member of two or more independently notable ensembles.)

Also, he performed with many notable jazz ensembles such as:

Charlie Barnett (who played the exact same solo for Cherokee every performance - Ray took the solo before him. One night, he played Charlie's solo note for note, and Barnett had a melt down!)

George Shearing (at one performance, they brought a stallion on stage for some reason. Don Rickles was one of the acts, and he tickled the horse in a private place with a feather just before the curtain went up. You can guess the rest), and many others.

His name appears in the Who's Who of Jazz and The Rough Guide To Jazz, possibly other books that I'm unaware of. He has a long history, being both a sideman and leader during the most exciting time of pre/post be-bop. As a man who was "there" as both a performer with and witness to some of the legendary icons of jazz, I believe he deserves a page in Wikipedia. His albums still sell reasonably well on CD Baby, and the solo vibe tracks he recorded for the late Paul Rodriguez (UK) are still used in various commercials around the world.

Thank you for your consideration.

Request for Approval of the Article on Maharshi Santsevi Paramhans

Dear MathhewVanitas,

Warm greetings!

I had submitted the last year an article on Maharshi Santsevi Paramhans for approval. The article was subsequently deleted. The main reason cited was that the article was not encyclopaedic in nature but sounded more like an eulogy. I admit that that might be possible for the love & devotion i have towards him.

I have tried to modify the article and resubmitted the same on Saturday, the 27th Dec 2014 for approval. It is an important article as there are millions of people mainly in India and also abroad who love him and will be interested to read about his life. It will also be a contribution and another step towards enriching and making the Wikipedia a complete place for the seekers of knowledge on a variety of topics.

I honestly aver that whatever i have put in the article is wholly true and factual and that i have not made the slightest attempt to advance any falsity. Even the photograph that has been included was captured by me personally on my own Sony Camera. I solicit your kind support in getting this article approved.

I very humbly request you to kindly find time and go through the revised article. I will gladly incorporate any suggestions that you make. I am reproducing what i had submitted the day before yesterday for your ready reference. I will very eagerly await your response.

With regards,

Hello pravesh, please do not paste an entire article on my Talk page, please simply provide me a link to your Draft page that holds the draft in question, and then I will be able to provide you advice. MatthewVanitas (talk) 07:36, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Article on Maharshi Santsevi Paramhans

Dear MatthewVanitas,

Warm Greetings!

Sorry to bother you again. I had written to you yesterday requesting your opinion on the above article and soliciting your help in that regard. As I had pasted the whole article, you had asked me to give only the link to the draft article. I had given the link yesterday, but am not sure whether it reached you. So, here I give that again:

See User talk:Praveshksingh#Draft:Santsevi Paramhans. I have had to delete it again as a copyvio, but it is also still far too promotional in tone - he took out a couple of particularly hagiographic passages, but the rest was almost unchanged from the source here: "His modest disposition, magnetic persona, sweet charming voice, flawless pronunciation, captivatingly melodious rendition of devotional mystic hymns, captivating scholarly discourses..." etc. I have suggested Praveshksingh ask advice at WT:WikiProject India, but it occurs to me that you could maybe point him to some examples of acceptably non-promotional articles about gurus like this - I seem to remember you helping with a similar case a year or too back. Reasonable response to my question by an apparently real person - not much of a template. Fully satisfied for the time being, nothing major in my head but the year 2015 is very young, indeed...
