If you are a bot you need to be approved before you can run. Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval Secretlondon (talk) 14:38, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See this please:)Ladsgroupبحث 14:45, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Global_bots_policy#Global_bots says:

The English Wikipedia allows the use of Global bots approved by the Meta policy to update interwiki links only without the need to request permission from the Bot Approvals Group . While active, a global bot's userpage should indicate that it has global approval - bot operator name|globalbot=yes|status=active may be used for this. Use of global bots for any other purpose is currently not permitted - a local bot request for approval must be filed for tasks other than interwiki linking.

Introducing anchors into redirects?

Hi, can you please explain this edit: [1] I haven't checked your other edits, but if you did more edits like this, please revert them. Thanks. --Matthiaspaul (talk) 08:21, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Unapproved bot replacing functional link targets...

Hi, I just ran into another of your edits, which does not make sense to me: [2]. Can you explain, why you replaced functional link targets to #Canada by #New Zealand. After all, this is article is about a Canadian school, which hardly has any connection with New Zealand. Please clarify. --Matthiaspaul (talk) 09:05, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, see Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Dexbot I'm running on trial period. I will fix them all. :)Ladsgroupبحث 14:44, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what you're doing

here, but the first one (19 July) was correct, as was the third. The second and (current) fourth were not. Suggest you try using a meaningful explanatory edit summary. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 21:22, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, My bot was working in trial period and it did some wrongs so I ran a standard code to revert it (revertbot.py) but now I realized the code has issues and reverts in endless loop (since it reverts itself edits) so I run it in my user name. Sorry. :)Ladsgroupبحث 21:45, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Working link

The link your bot 'fixed' was working so I've reverted your edit which made no sense. LRD NO (talk) 10:46, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This diff would appear to be the same problem. The link was correct, and was working, before your change, which as LRD NO says above, doesn't make sense. Perhaps your bot isn't "seeing" the linked section because the section header is wikilinked, i.e. has square brackets round it, which it shouldn't be but many are? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:21, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The bot can handle links but it can't handle piped links. I fixed it and I will run a check to see where it went wrong. thank you for notifying me :)Ladsgroupoverleg 15:01, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The exact same thing happened again. Maybe you should run more stringent tests or even pull it off for the time being until you can sort things out? LRD NO (talk) 18:59, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Stopped, it's strange because I fixed and checked. Let me double check :)Ladsgroupoverleg 19:33, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It was because regex library can't easily handle Unicode characters (including "[["). Anyway, It's fixed, double checked and ran on the pages to be sure. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 04:27, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Presume the fixing, double-checking and running was after these last couple of attempts at Newport County... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 08:37, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Those edits were done during my fixation and I failed several times until I realized where is the issue. So Don't worry :) :)Ladsgroupoverleg 08:43, 30 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked

I've blocked Dexbot, as it appeared to me that the bot was erroneously removing valid FA interwiki links (badges). Ladsgroup pointed me to this, suggesting I was in error. May I ask Ladsgroup to update Dexbot's user page, listing its tasks and linking approvals for each task (the badge task was not there when I blocked)? Another query, which is just my curiosity, but still. Why FA badges are not displayed anymore on en.wikipedia in the left column with interwiki links, at least on my Firefox (I see them in wikidata and in other wikis)? Regards. Materialscientist (talk) 23:34, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I just added to the page. Thank you for the notice. I just tested badges and they were okay. if the error persists please file a bug in bugzilla, with details of your os, browser, version and screenshot of the situation. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 23:47, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(Edit conflict) The badges disappeared only from pages edited by Dexbot, like Aspirin, I still see them in other pages like Diamond. Materialscientist (talk) 23:49, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I can see them in both. I'm not in the UI development team but my knowledge says there are two main reasons usually can cause this: 1- You use a gadget that conflicts and causes this 2- you're using another skin like monobook (I heard It had issues in monobook but I think it's fixed by know). Please log out and check :)Ladsgroupoverleg 23:55, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
+And maybe sometimes caching can cause this, caching in your system or in ISP or even in WMF server. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 00:01, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Correct, I use monobook, and see the badges after logging out. I've unblocked the bot. It would be great to have the monobook badge issue fixed. I've tried to purge (?action=purge) Aspirin on this wiki and on wikidata, with no effect. Materialscientist (talk) 00:03, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I restarted my bot. I ping User:Bene* and User:Aude who know more. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 00:09, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(after ec) Confirmed that it is an issue with Monobook. Diamond is showing as an FA in Esperanto, but it is also an FA in Hungarian and Latvian which are not showing. All three show in Vector. That is a strange inconsistency, but Dexbot removing the template does not seem to have made any difference. SpinningSpark 00:12, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

More useful edit summary

"Removing Link FA template" says nothing more than what one can see by looking at the diff. Is it because the other-wiki article is no longer a featured article there? Is it because of a new guideline here that they should not be identified? Is it because there is some new mechanism that serves the same purpose, making these tags no longer useful? Okay, I'm pretty sure it's the third one:) But for those who don't read the bot-approvals pages, how about having an explanation why, with a link to whatever consensus or guideline. Maybe "Removing Link FA template (handled by wikidata)"? DMacks (talk) 03:11, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What about {{Link GA}}?

I just saw Dexbot removing {{Link FA|nl}} from Prolog, but it left {{Link GA|de}} in the article. Shouldn't that be removed as well? QVVERTYVS (hm?) 11:39, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

QVVERTYVS Link Fa and Link Ga need different queries so that the bot checks that the badge actually exists in wikidata. -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:02, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Removing some templates but not others

I'm rather confused by this edit — the bot removes two {{Link FA}} transclusions, for vi:wp and he:wp, but it leaves the pl:wp Link FA alone. Is this intentional, or is the bot making a mistake? Nyttend (talk) 02:12, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, It's because in Wikidata d:Q192075 doesn't have badge for plwiki because in this wiki pl:North American P-51 Mustang is not a featured article and it's (incorrectly) marked in English Wikipedia featured (once it was featured but not since 2010) We need to check these cases very carefully and we can't remove them blindly. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 02:30, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what the intent of this edit was, but it surely was not the intended outcome

FYI, [3]. I'm not sure why it would be appropriate to replace an internal link with an external one, but in either event this broke a valid link with an invalid one. Dave (talk) 19:19, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Breaking links to anchors

Hi! I've seen Dexbot fix a number of link errors before and generally I like it but it seems to have problems with anchors. On this edit [4] it changed Toyota R engine#8R-G (which is an anchor since the 8R-G is a variant of the 8R engine) to Toyota R engine#18R-G (a section title for a different engine). It seems that Dexbot doesn't recognise links to anchors.  Stepho  talk  01:50, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I stopped the bot and I'll fix it ASAP and fix mistakes (I'll make a report to check by hand) :)Ladsgroupoverleg 12:44, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks.  Stepho  talk  14:05, 4 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! A minor problem with existing links to anchors at Toyota Fine-X. Dexbot changed a perfectly good link to a stable anchor into a link to a section title. The whole reason for the existence of anchors is to provide stable, unchanging links. Whereas section titles tend to change on the whim of fly-by-night editors. So it seems reasonable to me that Dexbot should prefer anchors rather than section titles. Thanks.  Stepho  talk  01:23, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Thank you for notifying me, I added this feature but apparently I gave it wrong variable to check. sorry for any inconvenience :)Ladsgroupoverleg 02:28, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The inconvenience was minor and Dexbot has fixed many other pages that I watch. Thanks for your effort on this bot.  Stepho  talk  13:06, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Removing FL template??

I have noted a few FL having their FL template removed...Does this mean they will no longer be a FL??Coal town guy (talk) 14:23, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No, that means we will use Wikidata instead of Link FL from now on. (like interwikis):)Ladsgroupoverleg 18:59, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Erroneous edit

Hey, this edit broke the link (which was fine to begin with) - don't know if there's a problem with the bot, but I figured I should let you know. Thanks. Parsecboy (talk) 13:17, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thank you for letting me know about the bug. It's so rare (it happens when people use image in sections) but it must be fixed, will be fixed soon. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 14:18, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, that makes sense - I didn't see that the image was included in the section header. Parsecboy (talk) 21:02, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Link FA

How's things with link FA going? I see still a lot of transclusions in English Wikipedia. Does your bot still remove them? - Magioladitis (talk) 08:20, 24 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thank you for reminding. I restarted the bot :)Ladsgroupoverleg 15:38, 24 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. There are still 1,000 pages with the template though. I wonder what is need to be done to get rid of this once and for all. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:49, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I checked, lots of them were featured once but not anymore. I can write a script to check if the article is still featured and removes {{Link FA}} if it's not. Actually I planned to do it soon :)Ladsgroupoverleg 16:53, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect! I also removed two that linked to non-existent article. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:56, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm struggling to understand what you are doing here. For example this edit removed the FA tag from a link that seemed to be to an FA in the Finnish Wikipedia. Is your bot getting confused in cases where the inter-wiki links are provided outside of Wikidata (because Wikidata can't cope in cases where there are other than one-to-one relationships)? If this is the case, can you please correct the bot? --David Biddulph (talk) 18:48, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's because the Finnish article is connected to the Patrolling article and an article in one wiki shouldn't be connected to several ones in another. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 19:43, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
David Biddulph there must be a one-one connection. Consider creating a redirect if anything else fails. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:52, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There are numerous places where the articles on one Wikipedia are not the same as the articles on another, hence there are often a number of different articles on the English Wikipedia which might reasonably map to one article on a foreign Wikipedia. This is a known limitation of Wikidata, and it is why it is still possible to insert specific inter-wiki language links. --David Biddulph (talk) 22:11, 26 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, you shouldn't use inline interwiki linking in articles, no matter what. it's still in use for very extreme cases or username space, etc. Read Help:Interwiki_linking#Interlanguage links. Differences between concept of an article in different languages shouldn't be solved this way.:)Ladsgroupoverleg 10:11, 27 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That help page hasn't explained how to address the difference in scope between articles in different languages. To take a simple (but fictitious) example, if the English Wikipedia has an article on Budapest but the Hungarian Wikipedia has one article on Buda and another article on Pest, Wikidata doesn't allow both Hungarian articles to link to the same English article. The problem was recognized early in the deployment of Wikidata (Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2012-07-16/Technology report, for example), and at that stage the story was "Abnormal (non-one-to-one) interwiki cases will be left as-is for the foreseeable future". I haven't yet seen an answer at how these n-to-one mappings will be handled in any other way. If you are suggesting that where there is not an exact match in article scope between languages there should not be inter-language links, then I believe that this would be making the encyclopedia less useful. And where the links do exist, I believe that a bot removing the FA flag is counter-productive. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:32, 27 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
you should talk to Wikidata's development team and ask them to address issues like this. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 18:34, 27 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Almost 700 cases left and should be taken care of manually. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 18:34, 27 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ladsgroup thanks. Do you run this bot in others Wikipedias too? When the LinkFA templates gets orphaned I can simplify AWB's code too. -- Magioladitis (talk) 10:49, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I ran this script in the following languages: en, fa, pl, de, sv, ja, zh, fi, tg, uk, he, nl, et, az, ckb for some languages like it, pt, fr, etc. We can't run it because the Link FA template populates categories like "Category:Articles featured in Dutch Wikipedia" and since there is no easy way to get query of featured articles in certain wikis in Wikidata (and combine it with other things) yet, We don't touch the templates in those wikis but soon we will be able to get the query (phab:T72229) and I'll start to remove them :)Ladsgroupoverleg 10:57, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

{{Official website}} template

Hello! In my opinion, {{Official website}} shouldn't be changed if the specified website matches the one provided by Wikidata; thus, edits such as this one shouldn't be performed by Dexbot. Having an official website as part of the {{Official website}} invocation actually improves the overall readability of Wiki code by reducing the "easter egg" factor of not knowing what's to be displayed. Of course, I'm more than open to discussing this further. — Dsimic (talk | contribs) 21:05, 31 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked

While substituting cite pmid templates the bot is removing text (random examples [7] [8] [9]; also in some edits the bot claims to substitute cite pmid, but this is not seen in the diff - this is not a major concern though). Materialscientist (talk) 08:20, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I made only 20 edits to test and see if the regex works correctly. Please unblock. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 08:37, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And What "text" I have removed? As far as I can see I only removed new line characters. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 08:41, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Unblocked, but pleas do not rerun until the code is fixed. Why don't you test the bot in a sandbox rather than high-traffic articles? Go through my links above or my recent reverts. Search for "cite pmid" in the diff, and observe that the bot either did not substitute them (thus WP:COSMETICBOT) or removed the text right after the cite pmid template. Materialscientist (talk) 08:44, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I already did the test in an article before starting to edit in these articles. Anyway I will fix it before next run. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 08:52, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hey User:Materialscientist I am going through all the edits to verify that it is not breaking stuff. Currently it is and needs more work. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 09:17, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I would strongly urge that the bot be blocked. It is not the business of editors to fix so many errors produced by a bot, it is for the one who operates the bot to make sure that the bot is working properly.Hzh (talk) 12:06, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
With more than 23M edits by bot I'm pretty aware of all rules and policies related to bots (I translated them too) but please consider two things: 1- It was meant to do only 20 edits and then it automatically stopped when it was done because it was running for test 2- Due to complex diff I couldn't recognize the error when I was checking them. but others did and notified me. and I won't re-run the bot when the it's not fixed :)Ladsgroupoverleg 12:33, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
