Unapproved bot replacing functional link targets...

Hi, I just ran into another of your edits, which does not make sense to me: [2]. Can you explain, why you replaced functional link targets to #Canada by #New Zealand. Hello, My bot was working in trial period and it did some wrongs so I ran a standard code to revert it (revertbot.py) but now I realized the code has issues and reverts in endless loop (since it reverts itself edits) so I run it in my user name. This diff would appear to be the same problem. The link was correct, and was working, before your change, which as LRD NO says above, doesn't make sense. Perhaps your bot isn't "seeing" the linked section because the section header is wikilinked, i.e. has square brackets round it, which it shouldn't be but many are? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:21, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked

I've blocked Dexbot, as it appeared to me that the bot was erroneously removing valid FA interwiki links (badges). Ladsgroup pointed me to this, suggesting I was in error. May I ask Ladsgroup to update Dexbot's user page, listing its tasks and linking approvals for each task (the badge task was not there when I blocked)? Another query, which is just my curiosity, but still. Why FA badges are not displayed anymore on en.wikipedia in the left column with interwiki links, at least on my Firefox (I see them in wikidata and in other wikis)? Regards. I can see them in both. I'm not in the UI development team but my knowledge says there are two main reasons usually can cause this: 1- You use a gadget that conflicts and causes this 2- you're using another skin like monobook (I heard It had issues in monobook but I think it's fixed by know). (after ec) Confirmed that it is an issue with Monobook. Diamond is showing as an FA in Esperanto, but it is also an FA in Hungarian and Latvian which are not showing. All three show in Vector. More useful edit summary

"Removing Link FA template" says nothing more than what one can see by looking at the diff. Is it because the other-wiki article is no longer a featured article there? Is it because of a new guideline here that they should not be identified? Is it because there is some new mechanism that serves the same purpose, making these tags no longer useful? Okay, I'm pretty sure it's the third one:) But for those who don't read the bot-approvals pages, how about having an explanation why, with a link to whatever consensus or guideline. What about {{Link GA}}?

Removing some templates but not others

I'm rather confused by this edit — the bot removes two {{Link FA}} transclusions, for vi:wp and he:wp, but it leaves the pl:wp Link FA alone. Is this intentional, or is the bot making a mistake? Nyttend (talk) 02:12, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, It's because in Wikidata d:Q192075 doesn't have badge for plwiki because in this wiki pl:North American P-51 Mustang is not a featured article and it's (incorrectly) marked in English Wikipedia featured (once it was featured but not since 2010) We need to check these cases very carefully and we can't remove them blindly. :)Ladsgroupoverleg 02:30, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Breaking links to anchors

Hi! I've seen Dexbot fix a number of link errors before and generally I like it but it seems to have problems with anchors. On this edit [4] it changed Toyota R engine#8R-G (which is an anchor since the 8R-G is a variant of the 8R engine) to Toyota R engine#18R-G (a section title for a different engine). Hi! A minor problem with existing links to anchors at Toyota Fine-X. Dexbot changed a perfectly good link to a stable anchor into a link to a section title. The whole reason for the existence of anchors is to provide stable, unchanging links. Whereas section titles tend to change on the whim of fly-by-night editors. I'm struggling to understand what you are doing here. For example this edit removed the FA tag from a link that seemed to be to an FA in the Finnish Wikipedia. Is your bot getting confused in cases where the inter-wiki links are provided outside of Wikidata (because Wikidata can't cope in cases where there are other than one-to-one relationships)? There are numerous places where the articles on one Wikipedia are not the same as the articles on another, hence there are often a number of different articles on the English Wikipedia which might reasonably map to one article on a foreign Wikipedia. No, you shouldn't use inline interwiki linking in articles, no matter what. it's still in use for very extreme cases or username space, etc. Read Help:Interwiki_linking#Interlanguage links. That help page hasn't explained how to address the difference in scope between articles in different languages. To take a simple (but fictitious) example, if the English Wikipedia has an article on Budapest but the Hungarian Wikipedia has one article on Buda and another article on Pest, Wikidata doesn't allow both Hungarian articles to link to the same English article. The problem was recognized early in the deployment of Wikidata (Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2012-07-16/Technology report, for example), and at that stage the story was "Abnormal (non-one-to-one) interwiki cases will be left as-is for the foreseeable future". I haven't yet seen an answer at how these n-to-one mappings will be handled in any other way. If you are suggesting that where there is not an exact match in article scope between languages there should not be inter-language links, then I believe that this would be making the encyclopedia less useful. I ran this script in the following languages: en, fa, pl, de, sv, ja, zh, fi, tg, uk, he, nl, et, az, ckb for some languages like it, pt, fr, etc. We can't run it because the Link FA template populates categories like "Category:Articles featured in Dutch Wikipedia" and since there is no easy way to get query of featured articles in certain wikis in Wikidata (and combine it with other things) yet, We don't touch the templates in those wikis but soon we will be able to get the query (phab:T72229) and I'll start to remove them :)Ladsgroupoverleg 10:57, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! In my opinion, {{Official website}} shouldn't be changed if the specified website matches the one provided by Wikidata; thus, edits such as this one shouldn't be performed by Dexbot. Having an official website as part of the {{Official website}} invocation actually improves the overall readability of Wiki code by reducing the "easter egg" factor of not knowing what's to be displayed. Unblocked, but pleas do not rerun until the code is fixed. Why don't you test the bot in a sandbox rather than high-traffic articles? Go through my links above or my recent reverts. Search for "cite pmid" in the diff, and observe that the bot either did not substitute them (thus WP:COSMETICBOT) or removed the text right after the cite pmid template. With more than 23M edits by bot I'm pretty aware of all rules and policies related to bots (I translated them too) but please consider two things: 1- It was meant to do only 20 edits and then it automatically stopped when it was done because it was running for test 2- Due to complex diff I couldn't recognize the error when I was checking them. but others did and notified me. and I won't re-run the bot when the it's not fixed :)Ladsgroupoverleg 12:33, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
