This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Brian Olsen, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.brianolsenart.com/about/bio.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 20:45, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia. While objective prose about products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not intended to be a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Thank you. Acroterion (talk) 13:57, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good morning. I apologize again. I truly am not trying to create an advertisement - I added my external links in a way to show allowable use of similar information. I thought this was needed for reference. I would be glad to remove them, but could use your help to understand how not to get flagged with copyright violations - perhaps the copyright notice without links to the site are enough?

I am simply trying to create a real connection between Brian Olsen and Denny Dent on wikipedia. Many other artists are trying to draw a connection between themselves and Denny and Brian is the only person whom Denny ever worked with.

I apologize - I truly am trying to understand and follow the copyright pages. Your assistance is sincerely appreciated.

Your recent edits

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 14:18, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Brian Olsen

Thanks for the note - there are two things that are giving you trouble. One is that it is unacceptable to simply copy from another website, even if attributed. Contributions to Wikipedia are licensed as free content, and you may not use non-GFDL-licensed content from other places, with rare exceptions. The other problem is that the prose you are adding is overtly promotional, and has no place in an encyclopedia. Neutral, encyclopedic contributions are welcome, where they concern people who are notable under Wikipedia's guidelines for inclusion. In general, individuals must have received multiple non-trivial instances of coverage in independent media with a reputation for fact-checking, preferably in publications of national, or at least regional standing. You may wish to review guidelines for your first article. Acroterion (talk) 15:36, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you - I think I have a better understanding. Admittedly, I was being a little lazy, drawing from things I have already written. I will review the First Article info more closely and simply write a fresh description of Brian and his accomplishments - and skinny it down to just the facts.

Again, I really appreciate the help.

Glad to help. Acroterion (talk) 16:46, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Acroterion - I have again reviewed the first article rules. I have attempted, to write a simpler write up and cite third party references of Brian's notability; please see below. I have also reviewed other similar artists on wikipedia specifically, Denny Dent, Dan Dunn and David Garibaldi who seem to have approved content, so I tried to follow their lead. Any additional suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated. I hope to learn from this and expand it more in the future in a way that really focuses on Brian's contributions to the performance art community.

Brian Olsen

Olsen began his performance art career in 1998. He was the assistant to renowned artist Denny Dent. Brian studied under Denny as his Tour/Studio Manager and Art Representative for over six years. Brian Olsen became Denny’s one and only protégé when Denny inadvertently witnessed Brian’s talents and decided to share his philosophies and talents. [1]

After Denny passed away on March 29, 2004, Brian began Art in Action. Brian continues to honor Denny’s memory while bringing his own unique approach to the performance painting experience. He has traveled the world painting celebrities and rock stars often for the very people he is painting. [2]

Not satisfied by being considered just another “speed painter” Olsen continues to strive for “something more”

Brian lives and works in a historic section of Denver, CO.

You should review WP:NOTE for requirements for individual notability and how to assert and sustain a claim. Right now there's no obvious assertion that this person is notable, other than the fact that you believe so. I assume he's a performance artist who employs speed painting, but it's very unclear. The Denny Dent article clearly explains why he's notable; this article must do likewise, as well as explaining why he's independently notable from Dent. Acroterion

Again, thank you. I admit I am struggling with how to get this put together appropriately. I agree that in time Brian will be perhaps more noteworthy. Right now, however, my difficulty is that the other mentioned "speed painters" who have wikipedia sites, do not seem to be any more note worthy than Brian. They are competitors and when clients see them on wikipedia it is difficult, if not impossible to explain why Brian does not have a space of his own, especially knowing his relationship to Denny.

The challenge I have is that Brian IS the only protege of Denny, and while perhaps he has not yet earned noteworthy status for Wikipedia, these two competitors are there, and they do not seem to have anything more to offer either. I state this as a fact, not to be combative.

Is there any advice you can offer as to why there sites are more noteworthy, especially the David Garibaldi Site? It seems to include even less detail then what I have provided. I really want to do the right thing, but I am apparently doing a poor job. I simply want to make sure Brian is recognized amongst his fellow performance painters. If adding a note to Denny's site is the way to go I could simply do that, but I really want to be able to explain to Brian why Dan and David are more "noteworthy" to have there own space, so we can go about improving his options in the future.

Again, I really appreciate your guidance and wish I was doing a better job, to save us both the time -

Acroterion - I am wondering if you have had a chance to read and think about my last post - or if you are still watching my post. Unfortunately, this form of communication leaves no way of knowing if messages are being seen or not. I am not trying to badger you, but, I really could use your help regarding my position. Please let me know if this is something that you can assist with further. Thank you. --Joerider (talk) 22:23, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, missed the last post. I have over 2000 pages on my watchlist and didn't see your message. You can always ping me on my talkpage if you need my attention, and I'm glad to help.
Garibaldi seems on the low end of notable, but he's worked with noteworthy performers and has gotten a little press. Surely Brian has worked with similarly noteworthy performers and events? Gotten some press? My concern with the article was that it was promotional in nature and unsourced. I suggest that you try to build some thing here, in User:Joerider/sandbox (click the redlink and say yes to create the page in your userspace). Write a little outline, find some sources (I can help you format it) and we'll see what develops. Acroterion (talk) 02:24, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone ahead and copied your article above to the sandbox, now a bluelink, rewritten it a little, and will format the refs a bit. You should work on finding references in the press. Acroterion (talk) 02:31, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your response. I can appreciate how busy you must be. I didn't want to sound pestering by writing in both places. Thanks for the update. I will take your advice on working in the sandbox. In my last post (above in this session) I "referenced" several press articles from around world. Newspapers from Australia, Dubai, etc. Would these not be appropriate "press" or did I perhaps use them incorrectly. Should have I written more about the events within the article, or did I simply miss the mark with these references?

Again

Thank you --Joerider (talk) 14:15, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

They're good as far as they go - the story about Norman in particular. More of that sort of thing would be great, as Brian was a major part of the WA story. Coverage in the major English-language press, i.e. the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK is regarded, probably unfairly, as iron-clad. I rewrote to use last names, which reads as more encyclopedic, and cut back on superlatives. I think it's at least as worthy as the Garibaldi article at the moment, and there's opportunity for further improvement and sourcing. Acroterion (talk) 14:29, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great - that really helps me. Your rewrite really helps. I will see what else I can pull together from good sources. I really do appreciate it. I am learning a lot from the experience and you have been a pleasure to work with. I will work on the article over the next couple of days and let you know when I have more. --Joerider (talk) 14:38, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
