The article Rule of threes (survival) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I made this article some years ago before I knew what really belonged on Wikipedia. I have no clue how it survived this long (pun intended), but it's time for it to go to a faraway farm now. I say this since it's more of a how-to article (and has been tagged as such since 2017, and from the rationale from the talk page.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Welcome to Wikipedia from the Anatomy Wikiproject!

Welcome to Wikipedia from WikiProject Anatomy! We're a group of editors who strive to improve the quality of anatomy articles here on Wikipedia. One of our members has noticed that you are involved in editing anatomy articles; it's great to have a new interested editor on board. In your wiki-voyages, here are a few relevant things:

  • Thanks for coming aboard! We always appreciate a new editor. Feel free to leave us a message at any time on the WikiProject Anatomy talk page. If you are interested in joining the project yourself, there is a participant list where you can sign up. Please leave a message on the talk page if you have any problems, suggestions, would like review of an article, need suggestions for articles to edit, or would like some collaboration when editing!
  • You will make a big difference to the quality of information by adding reliable sources. Sourcing anatomy articles is essential and makes a big difference to the quality of articles. And, while you're at it, why not use a book to source information, which can source multiple articles at once!
  • We try and use a standard way of arranging the content in each article. That layout is here. These headings let us have a standard way of presenting the information in anatomical articles, indicate what information may have been forgotten, and save angst when trying to decide how to organise an article. That said, this might not suit every article. If in doubt, be bold!
  • We write for a general audience. Every reader should be able to understand anatomical articles, so when possible please write in a simple form—most readers do not understand anatomical jargon. See this essay for more details.

Feel free to contact us on the WikiProject Anatomy talk page if you have any problems, or wish to join us. I wish you all the best on your wiki-voyages!

Thanks

Gratitude of the Kākāpō
These baby Kākāpō and I want to thank you for your close of the recent move discussion. It's not every day you see a close with a result of "page moved/not moved"! Firefangledfeathers (talk) 02:47, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Close using the discussion top tempate.

If you use {{Discussion top}} to close a discussion then it is useful if you include a reason= parameter like this:

{{Discussion top|reason=my explanation why I closed this discussion ~~~~}}

Be aware that you must not use this template if you take part in a discussion if someone else might reasonably object to its use to close a discussion (See Template:Discussion top/doc). In this case as eveyone else who took part in the discussion had objected to the proposed merge and you were the initial proposer, closing it was not contriversial. -- PBS (talk) 21:04, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia

Dear fellow editor,

I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. I hope that the lessons I can learn from you that I will present to the academic audience will benefit both the WikiProject Medicine (improving your understanding of yourself and helping to promote it and attract new volunteers) and the wider world of medical volunteering and academia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.

All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.

Please note that by filling out this questionnaire, you consent to participate in this research. The survey is anonymous and all personal details relevant to your experience will be kept private and will not be transferred to any third party.

I appreciate your support of this research and thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and share your experiences! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at my Wikipedia user page or through my email listed on the survey page (or by Wikipedia email this user function).

The survey is accessible through the LINK HERE.

A tag has been placed on Category:Wikipedians by alma mater: Purdue University 2 indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Hello, Invinciblewalnut,
Is there a reason to have a second category for Wikipedians who went to Purdue University besides Category:Wikipedians by alma mater: Purdue University? If this was a mistake, please tag it for deletion, CSD G7, as the page creator. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 21:27, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tropheryma

Hello. You appear to have made lots of changes here. Please could you explain your actions?

Thanks. YorkshireExpat (talk) 13:08, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@YorkshireExpat Sure, I was removing the random " marks from the article title and body, as well as fixing redirects. I'm assuming the italics issue stemmed from a misunderstanding of ' ' (with a space for clairity) vs. " If you think the page should be just Trophyeryma and not Trophyeryma whipplei that's fine. Invinciblewalnut (talk) 13:12, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I admit I'm not an expert in the taxonomy of bacteria, but according to LPSN the names of taxa that aren't validly published are placed quotes. I don't know whether that is widely used notation, but it does serve a purpose.
Also, per WP:MONOTYPICFAUNA, these pages should reside at the genus level, if you accept that bacteria are fauna.
Cheers. YorkshireExpat (talk) 13:23, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Huh, the more you know. Tbh I was not aware of that, nor am I accustomed to most of wikipedia's naming rules. I was going off of what I've seen in other articles and personal experience. I've never seen T. whipplei used with quotations (at least in the medical context, as I am a medical student), so it's perhaps not a widely used notation. I wonder what they mean by "validly published," seeing as the corrected name was, well, published in an international journal. What makes it valid? Invinciblewalnut (talk) 22:52, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"Valid" is term of art and means that certain provisions have been adhered to (see Rule 27 on pages 28-29 of this PDF if you're interested in details). Among the provisions is that it is necessary to make an explicit statement that a new taxon is being described ("sp. nov." is an acceptable short hand way to do this), a description must be provided, etymology must be provided, and (for a species), a type strain must be designated, and samples of the strain must be publicly accessible in institutions in two different countries. Genera must have a designated validly published type species, and families must have a validly published type genus. The type strain of Tropheryma whipplei (per LPSN), only held in a single country (France), and thus isn't validly published, which leaves the genus and family also not validly published. "Effectively published" is another term of art that is closer to the normal meaning of "published" (rules out scrawling on a napkin, posting photocopies on a utility pole, as well as "publication" in the form of a newspaper advertisement). Plantdrew (talk) 15:51, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Invinciblewalnut, YorkshireExpat, and CambridgeBayWeather: as of this morning I'm joining those who better should have left the name structure along. I thought that only the species name was invalid and the genus article & family should thus be at locations w/o quotation marks, but nope - it goes right down to the family [1][2][3]. I think I have managed to undo all of my zealous moves and retargets. Sigh. Also added a mention of this to the article, so that the next guy doesn't fall into the same pit.
One thing I am not sure about is whether these temporary names should have representation in the automatic taxobox system. Currently we have {{Taxonomy/Tropheryma}}, which displays as '"Tropheryma"', and {{Taxonomy/"Tropherymataceae"}}, which actually is in there with quotes. One of these is clearly inappropriate but I don't know which. Plantdrew, can you comment? --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 10:19, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Elmidae:, I've held off on implementing automatic taxoboxes for bacteria for this reason. There are only 16 taxonomy templates with quotes, and most of them are for frogs where there's debate about whether the taxon should be treated as a genus or subgenus (and it appears that none of the quoted templates are actually being used). "Tropherymataceae" is the only bacterial taxonomy template with quotes (there may be others that don't have quotes in the template name, but which have quotes in the displayed output). Much of the higher level taxonomy for bacteria isn't validly published. "Bacteria" itself isn't validly published according to LPSN, and many phyla and classes aren't validly published. All of the validly published phyla were only validated in 2021 (but we can probably expect more validation of higher ranks in the near future). I'd suggest that Wikipedia shouldn't include quotes in taxonomy template names or displayed output, but that should probably be discussed at TOL (with a notification at WikiProject Microbiology). Plantdrew (talk) 15:51, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Plantdrew: thank you! I did not know that this was such an endemic issue with bacteria. It might be best to make that taxobox manual then for the time being, so the content is not dependent on any particular taxonomic template configuration. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 17:41, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Elmidae I seem to remember doing some experimenting when putting this together to achieve the right output on the article, so some of it may not be entirely neccessary, and I suspect it is the quotes in the family taxonomy template title. The genus_text and species_text params for the automatic taxobox let you add quotes at those levels, but creativity was needed to get them on the family name.
