Quotations

Hi I see you've been adding large numbers of quotations to various articles. That's generally discouraged – in general, brief quotations may be included when (and only when) they are the subject of discussion in the text. There's some guidance here and here, not perhaps as clear as it might be. Any quotation must be attributed to the source (the real source, that is, not Wikiquote); in the case of a translation of the original, the translator must also be attributed. May I suggest that you remove any other bulk additions of quotations that you've made, and from now on seek consensus on the article talk-page before adding any more elsewhere? I think that would be wise.

Since I'm here: please take care not to edit-war over this (or indeed anything else). If your edit has been reverted, your next step is not to make the same edit again, as you did at Frédéric Bazille, but to start a discussion on the talk-page. Thank you for beginning the talk here and now. You give a lot of arguments, so I will try to answer them.

- large numbers of quotes: I limited them consciously till 5 quotes. And selected them over the years of the artist, so they support the life story of the artist in that. I know the m all rather well, so I can select characteristic quotes of them from Wikiquote where I attributed most of them, recent years. you are talking about a bulk of quotes. I don't think 5 quotes are a bulk. And I selected not long ones, as you can find many on Wikiquote, which is appropriate there.
- the 'real source': this sounds not very nice; Wikiquote is a very serious source. When I selected artists-quotes during the last six years from the books and online (like Archive), I noticed that only 20-25% was cited the original source. The rest was all cited by... another book. And then Wikiquote is just the next book, I believe. That is common practice in quotes since 150 years.To give the [detailed] link to Wikiquote for every quote I paced on Wikipedia, is much more useful for the interested reader, because he can find there connected quotes of the artist at once. So the integration of Wikipedia and Wikiquote grows. From the other side I do the same, on Wikiquote I frequently give a related link to Wikipedia. Or to Wikimedia-Commons. So you help the reader with useful and connected content, I believe.
- about the Bazille-quotes I placed back: Why was it removed suddenly, without a talk? Only a short and very general sentence as comment and explination? There the talk could have started already, isn't it? Not very respectful for my work, I believe. To select the 5 quotes of Bazille and to connect them with the content on Wikipedia I spent a few hours work. And than that is removed in a few seconds.. My part of the conflict is that I have not much experience in starting a talk. So I am gratefully that you started it here. Or must I place this in the talk-page of the last Bazille-update? If you can help me in that with an advice, I thank you very much.

I started my project of attributing small collections of artist-quotes on Wikipedia, to supplement the general information about the artist by others with his of her own information as an artist. So an integration grows, together with the images of the visual artists's works. So the reader can combine these three different sources and make an own opinion.

Thanks for your suggestion to remove them. But I don't remove them for some weeks if you don't mind; so other Wikipedia people can see them and judge them, together with this talk. If I remove them now; nobody can judge them anymore. They are invisible. If people judge after a discussion it is not appropriate, I will remove them and go back working exclusively on Wikiquote. Then I have tried at least.

Can you advice me how I can use / upload pictures of artist's works for a Gallery on Wikipedia if I can't find almost anything on WikiCommons?
Which artists work? The artist has to have died 71 years ago for uploading at Commons (in general). At Wikipedia English you can upload images of works that were published before 1923. See my user page for examples. Coldcreation (talk) 12:00, 12 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
For instance Karl Schmidt-Rottluff: 1905-1976..
Since not dead for 71 years, you can't upload to Commons until 2047, when his works will become public domain. You can upload images of his work to WP English, here, if and only if the work in question was published (reproduced) in a magazine, newspaper, catalogue, etc. before 1923. Hallo, Coldcreation -I find many different ways of descriptions in the captions on Wikipedia, that is the problem. Please tell me just what you mean / tell me what I am doing wrong. Do you mean I must use the sequence: artist|title|year|medium???? I made a new Gallery as example. Did I do the new Gallery of the painter Théodore Rousseau in the right way?? Please, give your comment.. ... .And this new Gallery of Willem Roelofs?? It is almost the same, but in front is now given his name first; is that necessary, as the template standard Wikipedia caption style says...? It gives much repetition. I really can't believe you want me to use the model of the given Metzinger image-caption inside a Gallery full of images. Do you? I looked at your many corrections you did last days, and will follow their model. Thanks for that.

Caption punctuation

I did not place them, only to 'The Sick Child' which you removed as major work. Because the Sick Child had an own page on Wikipedia, so it is useful. Can you replace the image of the Sick Child back?! It is a major work of Munch, a remembrance of Munch's young sister who died very early; her death was very impressive for Munch and he made several works of her. Copyright questions

@FotoDutch: could you please provided proof or evidence that the files you recently uploaded are in the public domain in the United States? If not they will be removed from Wikipedia. Note, just because someone says so on another website is not proof. If any of these paintings were published before 1923 you need to show where: full reference with link if possible. Wikiart is not some website where somebody says something. You know better, of course! Wikiart presents and describes more than 250.000 pictures of art, worldwide.
This is their policy on copyright:
WikiArt presents both public domain and copyright protected artworks. The latter are showcased in accordance with fair use principle:
* as historically significant artworks
* as used for informational and educational purposes
* as readily available on the internet
* as low resolution copies unsuitable for commercial use
We respond to notices of alleged copyright infringement and remove copyright protected artworks, or block them for users from countries where infringement is alerted. But mostly we try to get artist's permission to demonstrate his art, and confirm it with a credit line.
We provide information to help copyright holders manage their intellectual property online. If you think somebody is violating your copyrights and want to notify us, please submit the notice by wikipaintings@gmail.com.
Did you ever noticed or experienced nasty things about copyrights from Wikiart? Or did you hear about it? Till now I never heard. So, I believe it is a reliable source to mention. It's really quite simple. You tagged several images as published before 1923. Show where they were published. If you cannot, the file will be deleted. Wikiart is loaded with works they claim are free in the US, and they are in fact not. Since you uploaded the images to Wikipedia, you alone are responsible for providing justification for doing so. You asked me some questions, but even before I could answer, you removed already all the images. Not very nice. So I replaced them, so the discussion can go on.
Meanwhile I sent a mail to Wikiart to ask them information about their use of the mentioned 'Public Domain US' on each image. I am waiting what they will answer. Till now I never heard about copyright-problems for Wikiart. And you neither, otherwise you had told.
Thanks for the suggestion of 'faire-use'. I was thinking about it also already, but still don't know how to handle it yet. If you think this is the right option, why don't you change the permission of the images at once? Than the problem is solved, isn't it? And you have much more experience than I have in this matters! I can imagine you will also appreciate to see more pictures on the pages of artists like Gabriele Münter, Maurice de Vlaminck and many possible other artists. They really deserve a picture-Gallery as illustration of the text about their work and life. Especially in the pictures of De Vlaminck it was very good possible to illustrate his fast swifts in style and color in only a few years. That tells a lot, isn't it? Fair use is likely not a good option for de Vlaminck, since other images are available (the ones I uploaded already). For Münter that might be a viable option, in which case the most notable works could be uploaded at low resolution. Wikiart is loaded with non-free images they state erroneously are free in the U.S. I can give you hundreds of examples. The ones you posted are but a few. Unfortunately, it is likely those images will be removed. If you would like, I can help with some non-free fair use uploads. Let me know what that website provides as evidence for Public Domain US", though I am confident they have no idea if these images were published prior to 1923 (or why they claim of PD-US). Incidentally, if you look through the links I have posted of de Vlaminck images in the article, there may be others published before 1923 that I have not uploaded... Condolences regarding your friend. Until one of de Vlaminck's Fauve paintings are found published in the literature prior to 1923 (or other valid criteria)—such as The River Seine at Chatou, 1906, already in the article—they cannot be uploaded with the PD-US license. Before uploading images in free use, make sure they are indeed free use. Are you referring to uploading at Wikipedia or Commons? Coldcreation (talk) 09:59, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You will see there is now the official draft template on your draft. The instructions for submitting it are are on it. For the translation attrib., please see Help:Translation.
